| Abstract: | We examine some of the possible consequences associated with the steep temperature gradients believed to exist in the transition zone. It is shown that the heat flux in the transition zone may be weakly electrostatically unstable and that the thermal electric field associated with the same step temperature gradients will lead to the generation of copious numbers of non-thermal electrons  boiling off into the corona. |
