Abstract:Vitamin D(VD)is a steroid hormone with anti-rickets effect,and vitamin D3(VD3)is mainly found in animals.As an essential substance for life activities,VD plays an extensive and important physiological role.The process of VD metabolism and the metabolic enzymes are evolutionally conserved,and also affected by various factors.Due to the significant differences between fish species and terrestrial vertebrates in living environments,the anabolism and physiological functions of VD in fish display some differences from those in terrestrial higher animals.In this review,we summarized the main origin and requirements of VD3 in fish,and concluded the recent advances in vitamin D receptor(VDR),the regulations of metabolic process of VD3 and its physiological functions in animals.Moreover,we compared the difference between fish and terrestrial higher vertebrates in VD origin,metabolism and VDR.At the end,the future research of VD in aquatic animals is prospected.
