Abstract:The discussion of one of the greatest earthquakes in Chinese history are made possible by the recent publication of a very complete catalogue of Chinese historical earthquakes by the Institute of History,Academia Sinica. This earthquake, which was reported to have caused the loss of more than eight hundred thousand lives, has an epicentral intensity near to 12 degrees. The shock was felt over an area of more than one million square kilometers. The depth of focus is estimated to be 38-45 km from the radius ro of perceptible area and 10. The isoseismal lines are quite eccentric and they indicate a fault striking EEN and dipping to the Wei-ho Valley. Foreshocks, aftershoeks, earthquake sound and optical phenomenon in connection with this earthquake are also discussed briefly. The historical seismicity of the Wei-ho Valley area is also discussed. It appears that the time distribution of earthquake occurrences in this area is not uniform. The seismicity intensifies cyclically in every 6 or 7 hundred years. The 16th century is by far the most active period and from the trend of variation of the intensity, the present seems to be a time of declining activity. The space distribution of seismieity in this area is also not uniform. On the east of 108.8°E, the seismicity is stronger than that on the west. On the south of Chin-ling the seismicity is much weaker than that on its north.
