Cosmic Strings, Varying Gravitational `Constant', and Proton Decay

Abstract:The idea that pieces of cosmic strings born in the very early universe became the celestial bodies we now observe suggests a link between the proton lifetime and the Cavendish constant G. A varying G might cause a quick proton decay in hot matter and/or in degenerate matter. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
