Abstract:ESR ( Electronic Spin Resonance ) has been mainly used to measure the concentration of free radical in coal. The studies suggest that: 1. The concentrations of free radical in coal and asphaltenes show the regular change with increased coal rank, and the evolution degree may be determined for that. 2. There occurs the free radical in soluble and insoluble organic matter from coal, in which there is the free radical in asphaltenes and resins and not the free radical in saturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. In addition, the paper briefly describes the principle and method of ESR and discusses the variable ties of free radical concentration in different ranks of coal.
