Abstract: | The photographic archive of the 22 April 1884 Colchester earthquake, the most damaging British earthquake in the last 400 years, is wellknown. Evidence has come to light that at least two of these photographs are partly or wholly faked. This shows that not even the camera can necessarily be relied upon to accurately portray the extent of damage from historical earthquakes. |
