| Abstract: | Through research on terranes the characteristics and evolutionary history of the consumed Paleotethys are traced. The N-S extension of the Paleo-Pacific and activities of transform faults in the Mesozoic are deduced from the present distribution of the remnant fragments of the Paleotethys along the East Asia continental margin of the intermediate-high latitudes. Upon these facts a period (Late Triassic-Early Cretaceous) of continental margin activity of transform fault type in East Asia is defined. It was an important period when the tectonic framework of East Asia changed from a N-S extension of oceanic plates into an E-W extension. The East Asia continental margin has been affected by the subduction of modern Pacific plate since the Late Cretaceous. |
