Authors:Edward A McBean  Frank A Rovers
Institution:Edward McBean received his undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia and his graduate degrees from M.I. T., all in civil engineering. He is a professor in the Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources Department at the University of California, Davis (Davis, CA 95616), and a technical advisor to Conestoga-Rovers and Associates Ltd.;Frank Rovers received his B.A. Sc. and M.A. Sc. in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo. He is the president of Conestoga-Rovers and Associates Ltd., (Waterloo, Ontario N2V 1C2). He has been extensively involved in remediation of many hazardous waste sites.
Abstract:Several alternative probability distributions for estimating the probability of exceedance of contaminant concentrations are examined for their appropriateness for developing inputs to risk assessments. The rationale is provided for using the log Pearson Type III distribution, a three-parameter model, for estimation of the exceedance probabilities.
