Abstract:The thermal Kaiser effect suggests that rock can record the information of the highest temperature that it has experienced in the geologic history. Using self-developed thermo-acoustic emission instruments, the highest rock paleotemperature was measured in this study. Tests on artificial heated sandstone and limestone samples verify the existence of thermal Kaiser effect for sedimentary rocks and the accuracy of the experiment results. And the highest temperatures of sandstone and mudstone samples with different buried depths in the Tarim basin and a sample in Western Sichuan were carefully measured. The results illustrate good thermal Kaiser effect and the rock thermo-acoustic emission signals vary with temperature. Temperatures measured by thermo-acoustic emission are largely consistent with the highest temperatures samples experienced, suggesting the thermo-acoustic emission can be applied to paleogeotemperature measurement. Therefore, thermo-acoustic emission technique can be considered as a new method in thermal history reconstruction of sedimentary basins.
