Abstract: | Abstract The stability properties are described for two general types of zonal mean flows: solid body rotation and a mid-latitude jet. Growth rates are plotted versus zonal wavenumber and mean flow vertical shear in both cases. The structure of the most unstable modes is described and some physical interpretation given. |
