Abstract: | Natural, mixed phytoplankton communities are more sensitive to PCBs than pure or mixed laboratory cultures. Further, nannoplankton is generally omitted from consideration although this fraction contributes the bulk of production by the phytoplankton community. This study is the first attempt to evaluate the differential sensitivity to PCB by an estuarine phytoplankton community. Contrary to expectation, the greatest sensitivity to PCB is found in net-plankton not in nannoplankton. The susceptibility of phytoplankton to PCBs is highly variable within a community and this may have important implications for selective plankton feeders. |
