Abstract:The whole growth process of crop was monitored by a standard digital color camera (RGB cam) and a modified near infrared (NIR) digital camera (NIR cam). According to the sensitivity of crop and soil in near infrared and visible light images, the crop coverage (Ccp) information was obtained by image processing algorithm and correlated with the observed crop growth characteristics.The results of the maize observation experiment conducted at the China Academy of Meteorological Sciences showed that the Ccp value calculated from the automatic observation maize image and the artificial observed plant height (NIR R2=0.9276, RGB R2=0.8491), the leaf area index (NIR R2=0.9535, RGB R2=0.8822), the dry matter weight (NIR R2=0.9497, RGB R2=0.7708) had high correlation, indicating that the image obtained by NIR cam was better for reflecting the growth characteristic of corn than that by RGB cam.
