Abstract:In breakwater designs and engineerings nowadays, less consideration is given to the long term deformation of a soft soil foundation. In order to accurately predict the deformation of soft soil foundation under a sloping breakwater, the Plaxis 2D FEM pro- grams are used for this study. The Mohr Coulomb model, where the creep behavious of the soft soil foundation is not taken into consideration, and the numerical model in which soft soil creep can be reflected to discuss its long term effects, are respectively employed to simulate the deformation process of the soft soil foundation under a sloping breakwater respectively in the engineering period and in the post-engineering period. It is learnt from the comparison between the two models that the deformation degree and the time variation of the excess pore pressure estimated by the creep-involved model are more reasonable, while the underestimated deformation results from the Mohr-Conlomb model. Therefore it is necessary and reasonable to take the creep behavious into consid- eration for the designs and engineerings similar to this case.
