Abstract:Based on recent hydrographic observation, satellite remote sensing, and historical hydrographic data, oceanic frontal phenomena in the southern Taiwan Strait are analyzed in general. Results indicate that, in both summer and winter seasons, the southern Taiwan Strait is an area where different water bodies meet and oceanic fronts develop. The monsoon climate causes significant seasonal difference of frontal natures. In summer, the major water bodies that influence the area are the Hanjiang River plume, the upwellings around Taiwan shoal, and the waters from the South China Sea and the Kuroshio. Their interaction forms a complicated three dimensional frontal structure in the southern Taiwan Strait, including fronts of estuary plumes, upwellings, Kuroshio, and those caused by shelf break topography. The Hanjiang River runoff and the upwellings around Taiwan shoal play important roles in frontal genesis. In winter, the major water bodies that influence the area are the ZMCW (the Coastal Water of Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces) and the water from the South China Sea. They interact in the Strait and form a deformed coastal front that cuts through the southern Taiwan Strait. Grossly divided by the central line of the Strait, the western part of the Strait is dominated by the cold ZMCW, and the eastern side by the warm haline water from the south. The frontal zone basically lines up with isobaths forming three legs. In deep winter, this front could move southward to the shelf break and becomes a shelf/slope front when northeasterly blows.
