Abstract:A correction formula is theoretically derived to evaluate the change in partial pressure of carbon dioxide in seawater upon heating. The constraints on the heating process are constant salinity, total alkalinity, and total carbon dioxide concentration. The result is
. This equation fits δPCO2/δt for open ocean seawater compositions to within approximately 9%. The almost constant 4.4%/°C effect is in agreement with that measured by Kanwisher (1960).
