Abstract: | This note serves to introduce a group of papers centered around the theme of massive submarine gravity deposits, megaturbidites, presented in a 1986 AAPG/SEPM Symposium organized by Larry J. Doyle and Robert Bourrouilh. Although megaturbidite may be an unfortunate term, massive gravity deposits are significant as marker beds, time lines, and potential hydrocarbon reservoirs, as well as being manifestations of important geological phenomena. The papers which follow begin to explore the inter-relationships among the four principal variables: time, basin size and shape, tectonic setting, and sediment accumulation in the provenance areas, which govern the formation of these extraordinary units. |
