Abstract:One hundred and thirty-one water samples were collected from the South Yellow Sea in June 2009. This paper presents the preliminary study on phytoplankton community structure by the Uterm?hl method. A total of 4 phylum and 51 genera including 73 species (exclusive of uncertain species) were found, which were mostly composed of diatom and dinoflagellates, with the major group being diatom. There were 32 diatom genera that include 47 species. The dominant species included Prorocentrum dentatum, Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima, and Paralia sulcata. The phytoplankton cell abundance was ranged 0.089 - 1045.200×103 cell/L, with an average of 15.941×103 cell/L, with dinoflagellates being dominant. Horizontally, the high cell abundance was located at the southern of the survey area, and low in the northwest part. Vertically, the phytoplankton, mainly P. dentatum, were concentrated in the 10-m layer water and decreased with the increase of the water depth. The horizontal distributions of Shannon-Winener index and Pielou evenness index were low in the southern survey area, and were contrarily with phytoplankton cell abundance.
