Age and correlation of the "Shimaoshan Group" of Fujian |

| Abstract: | The Shimaoshan Group, proposed by The Regional Geological Survey Team of Fujian, consists mainly of purplish-red sedimentary and volcanic rucks (conglomerates, tuffaceous gritstone, andesite and rhyolite), and is generally considered to be late Early Cretaceous. Recently a large amount of ostra-codes, conchostracans and charophytes, respectively belonging to the Mongolocypris Assemblage, Ne-mestheria Fauna and Atopochara-Obtusochara Assemblage, were obtained from the lower part of this group in the type area. They generally indicate an early Late Cretaceous age. Based on some new discoveries, the "Shimaoshan Group" should be divided into the early Late Cretaceous Shimaoshan Group and the late Early Cretaceous Baiyashan Group. The Baiyashan Group may be correlated with the Ji-shan Formation and the Xiaochi Formation. The Shimaoshan Group may be correlated with the Hekou Formation and the Shaxian Formation. |
