Abstract:In this paper, based on the results from studies of geochemistry of the China Sea and by reference to pertinent data available, the author has illustrated some geochemical patterns of shelf sediments:(1)The grain-size control of elements. Grain size of sediments plays a distinct role in controlling the content of elements. It can be divided into 3 patterns:(a)the average contents of most elements increase gradually with the decrease of grain size;(b)a small number of elements decreases with the decrease of grain size;(c)individual element first increases at its maximum in silt(medium size)and then decreases in content with decrease of grain size. The variation regularity of eltement content with grain size is called "the law of grain-size control of elements".(2)The zonal distribution of elements along the coast. The continental shelf, in particular the inner shelf, is characterized by zonal variation in elemental content. The regional distribution of most elements is in the form of roughly parallel to the coastline. It may be attributed to(a)the differentiation of grain size, mineral and element with distance from coast;(b)the decrease of terrigenous materials and the strengthening of chemical and biological processes in the direction towards the sea;(c)long-shore current process controlling sediments, minerals and elements.(3)The estuarine enrichment of elements. The estuary is a transitional region between the continent and sea. Because water velocity, pH, salinity and other physico-chemical factors vary strongly, most of elements are enriched in different way there. The isople-ths of element content are in tongue-like distribution extending from the mouth of rivet towards the sea.(4)The correlation of elements. In shelf areas, certain pairs of elements in sediments often exhibit a strong correlation. On the basis of linear correlation between the elements, their relationships may be expressed by linear regression equations.(5)The philo-detrital property of elements. Terrigenous detrital index of many elements in shelf sediments is always considerably more than their authigenic index(Zs > Zz), i.e. the majority of elements are mainly present within the lattices of various terrigenous detrital minerals. This peculiarity can be called "the philo-detrital property".(6)The philo-continental property of elements. Statistical data show that the abundances of indicator elements, obviously different from the continent and the ocean, is relatively close to that of terrestrial rocks and continental crust, but markedly differs from that of oceanic sediments, and the abundance distribution pattern of elements in shelf sediments is similar to that in continental crust. We call this characteristic "the philo-continental property".
