Abstract:Permian reefs in South China contain the most extensive and various calcisponges known. Three sponges, included sphinctozoans, inozoans and sclerosponges (tabulozoans),appear as frame-builders and binding organisms in Middle to Late Permian reefs. The calcisponges found in Middle Permian reefs (Maokou Formation with Neoschwagerina and Yabeina zones) in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces,South China, have a strong resemblance to those in Djebel Tebaga reefs in Tunisia,North Africa. Some of genera uch as Tebagathalamia,Amblysiphonella,Colospongia and Cystothalamia are quite common in reefs of both places. The Tunisian reefs were formed in the early stage of Late Permian, relatively later than the reefs in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces,South China, but the calcisponge faunas show a similarity in features and a continuity in their evolution. Reef-builing sponges represented by an association of Amblysiphonella-Polycystocoelia, composed of forty-five species of 23 genera belonging to Sphinctozoa,Inozoa and Tabulozoa, are found in Late Permian reefs (Changxing Formation with Palaeofusulina zone) in Lichuan, Hubei province,as well as in other regions,South China. The association,at present,is one of the most important reef-building sponge faunas and is also one of the upper most Permian faunas in the world. The sphinctozoa appeared as frame-building organisms are cylindrical form and crowded together. In quiet water, they have thinuer walls and rare filling structures in chambers, but in turbulent water, they have thicker walls and dense and varied filling structures in the chambers. The calcisponges in reefs as binding organisms are usually bodies of glomerate chambers,or flat and tabular bodies with numerous chambers. They are always short and small in form. This shows a strong adaptability of calcisponges lived in a higher energy water environment. The binding organisms play an important role in developing reefs. They are so abundant that can be almost found in all typical reefs in different places of China. Some ecological evidence suggests that most of frame-building calcisponges can not build up a reef without existance of the binding calcareous algae.
