Abstract:The formation of sedimentary and strata-bound mineral deposits depends on many factors. Determination of a metallogenetic epoch of mineral deposits is attributed to analysis of geologic backround for mineral deposits in a certain metallogenetic epoch. The distribution of sedimentary mineral deposits in the Variscan-Indosinian metallogenetic epoch shows a time and space regularity in South China. The sedimentary mineral deposits possess a metallogenetic sequence, from older younger. Fe→P→Mn→Al→coal →gypsuim-salt. Most of the sedimentary mineral deposits is distributed in the areas with stable crust, and most of strata-bound mineral deposits is distributed in the areas with mobile crust. The metallogenetic-geologic backgrounds for mineral deposits of various types and va- rious mineral deposits of the same type are different. The preconditions for formation of oolitic hematite deposits are the ore-forming material from source region paleogeographic conditions. The preconditions for formation of baaxite deposits are weathering dxiration and composition of the source rocks and paleoclimate. The favorable metallogenetic-geologic background for the stratabound mineral deposits is tensional faulting of the crust in a relatively stable stage. Formation of the stratabound mineraldeposits is closely related not only with sedimentary-diagenetic-epigenetic revolution ofthe sedimentary basin, but also with tectonic and magmatic activities. The "ore-forming materials of most strata-bound mineral deposits were not derived from land area, but from the deep crust or upper mantle. They have been carried firstly by volcanic extrusion and secondly by seapage of seawater and rain continuously extracting the metalls under the suitable conditions, and hence formed the metal-bearing hydrothermal solutions, which were extruded on the sea bottom through faults and cracks.
