THE RECOMPUTATION OF THE CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF ROCKS IN STUDYING METASOMATIC PROCESSES
Abstract:Computations must be done on chemical analyses of selected representative rock samples collected from zones of increasing or decreasing intensive rock metasomatism as opposed to a random sampling from such zones without regard to such systematic processes require "constant volume" metasomatism and appears to satisfy the following requirements: a) the computations must be in terms of ions; b) for any standard volume, the number of anions and cations making up the minerals of the rock should be counted (as units); c) it must take account of the rock's porosity; d) the calculations themselves should be as simple as possible. A standard volume (such as 10,000Å3) is chosen and a computation made of the number of anions in it for each of the rocks to be compared, later adding the cations according to the results of chemical analysis. Two methods of computation of anions contained in a standard volume equal to 10,000Å3 are proposed: 1) a method of computation based on the quantitative mineral composition of the rock, and 2) a method of computation based on the volumetric weight of the rock.- -Robert M. Hutchinson.
