Abstract:The banded iron formation (BIF)-type iron ore deposits are one of the most important iron deposits in China, with a proven resources accounting for 55.2 percent of the total iron reserves. Iron deposits of such kind are distributed mainly in the North China Block, with minor in the Yangtze Block. BIF-type iron deposits in the North China Block are mainly concentrated in Anshan-Benxi, Mihuai-Eastern Hebei and Wutai-Luliang metallogenic intensive areas, with a total proven reserves accounting for 41.5 percent of the China's total proven reserves. The BIF type iron deposits occur in any epoch from Paleoarchean to Neoproterozoic, mainly in Paleoarchean, Mesoarchean, Neoarchean, Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic, and Neoarchean- Paleoproterozoic. The BIF type iron deposits can be divided into Algoma type and Lake Superior type, with the Algoma type being key one. But most BIF type deposits are poor in iron, and iron-rich deposits are fewer. Iron-rich orebodies are commonly hosted in banded iron formation, but (volcanic) sedimentary- hydrothermal reworking rich iron deposits are an important type. The formation of BIF is closely related to submarine hydrothermal exhalative sedimentation (SEDEX). The resources of the BIF-type iron ores is great in China.
