Abstract:Based on Biot consolidation theory for two-phase porous media, this paper presents a numerical assessment of the performance of a saturated soil slope under rainfall by an effective stress finite element method, in which the soil behavior is described by means of an elastoplastic constitutive model developed within the framework of the Matsuoka-Nakai failure criterion. Firstly, the numerical method and the analysis procedure are briefly outlined. Subsequently, using the proposed method, an engineering case study is illustrated with the simulation of deformations induced by rainfall in a saturated soil slope. Generally, the development of slope deformations is clearly demonstrated by the analytical methods. It is considered to capture the fundamental responses of the problem investigated, and yield results which are useful for engineering practice.
