Phonon spectra of 2∶1 mullite in infrared and Raman experiments

Abstract:Single crystal Raman and infrared phonon spectra of mullite were measured. The number of modes, their frequencies and line profiles are analysed. The local structural changes associated with the formation of oxygen vacancies contribute to the appearence of modes in both the Raman and infrared spectra of mullite. The number of modes is increased compared with the degrees of freedom predicted by group theory for the mullite structure without oxygen vacancies.
