CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW-MARINENESS FORAMINIFERAL FAUNAS lN MODERN AND QUATERNARY DEPOSITS AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL IMPLICATION

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic investigation of modern foraminiferal faunas of low-marineness environments along China coast and an extensive collection of literatures published in China and abroad, and is intended mainly to illustrate the following three problems: (1) Whether or not the non-marine foraminifera exist? (2) What is the feature of low-marineness foraminifera? (3) Whether or not all of the Quaternary fossil foraminifera found in China inland were related to sea water? The conclusion is: 1) the low-marineness foraminifera are remarked by: poverty of genera and species, predominance of euryhaline forms, low fauna diversity, abnormality of test and coexistence of non-marine forms. Mono- or oligo- species faunas occur not only in coastal low-marineness environments (marshes, oligohaline lagoons and upper estuaries), but also in inland salt lakes and marshes where have no relation with sea in time and space; 2) the lowmarineness and non-marine foraminiferal faunas are so common in the nature of low fauna diversity, high abnormality and coexistence of non-marine organism that it is very difficult to differentiate them from each other. As there is no modern non-marineness foraminifera found in China up to now, it is impossible to compare the nature of foraminiferal test and water composition. However, this comparison probably is a hopeful approach to the recognition of these two faunas; 3) some of the mono- and oligo-species faunas found in Quaternary can be judged related to sea water, but others may be no influence of sea water. Their abundant occurrence in Quaternary is believed due to the climate in that time, and to the low altitude and near coastal line; 4) the occurrence of fossil foraminifera is not certain to be the evidence of sea transgression, because it would be existed only if there is a proper water chemical condition. Conversely, the lack of fossil foraminifera is not certain to be an evidence of no sea transgression, because foraminifera could be dissolved by low pH water after they deposited; 5) nonmarine foraminiferal faunas have been found almost in Cenozoic deposits, but Nonion has been reported from the Cretaceous in Sichuan Province, China. From the geological evolutionary point of view, like other organisms such as diatom and ostracods, foraminifera might have originated from the sea and then expanded toward the land; 6) the geological interpretation of lowmarineness foraminiferal faunas is a world-wide problem and its resolution requires worldwide concerned efforts.
