| Abstract: | Projections of Chinese oil production have vacillated between overoptimism and inordinate pessimism during the past 20 years.In the mid-1970s,China was hailed as a potential oil giant,with prospects of producing 329 million tons by 1985.By the early 1980s,then oil output was stagnant,many analysts predicted that there would no growth in production till the mid-1980s,and that the country might have to start importing oil some time in the 1980s.But after stagnating for five years during 1979-83,Chinese oil output started to grow again in 1984,maintaining a fairly high growth rate in the ensuing years.This article analyses the factors that led to the stagnation in output during 1979-83 and the causes leading to the resumption of growth starting from 1984.A glimpse into the future of Chinese oil production in the 1990s is also taken. |
