The changing structure of Chinese transnational urban network:The changing structure of Chinese transnational urban network:An analysis through air passenger flow
Abstract:The spatial evolution of the interaction between Chinese cities and foreign cities is accompanied by rapid urbanization and globalization since the start of the opening and reform era in 1978. A more complicated Chinese urban network still remains under-examined in empirical studies. Air connec-tion offers a notable aspect to reveal the changing connections between Chi-nese cities and foreign cities since air transportation is a basic carrier for urban interaction. This article focuses on the changing structure of Chinese transnational urban network and proposed a new analytic framework based on the concept of 2-mode social network. There are some significant findings. First, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are the three central cities of Chinese transnational urban network. Besides the central cities, western cities have achieved fast growth rate during the past decade. Second, Chinese cities are closely connected to the cities from surrounding areas such as Seoul and have relatively weak transcontinental connections.
Keywords:air passenger flow  transnational urban network  2-mode social network  network centrality
