Models of the cometary coma in which abundances are calculated for various heliocentric distances

Abstract:One-dimensional radial models of the chemistry in cometary comae have been constructed for heliocentric distances ranging from 2 to 0.125 AU. The coma's opacity to solar radiation is included and photolytic reaction rates are calculated. A parent volatile mixture similar to that found in interstellar molecular clouds is assumed. Profiles through the coma of number density and column density are presented for H2O, OH, O, CN, C2, C3, CH, and NH2. Whole-coma abundances are presented for NH2, CH, C2, C3, CN, OH, CO+, H2O+, CH+, N2+, and CO2+.
