Endogenic events in the form of intrusive activity and regional metamorphism developed asynchronously in various parts in the Svecofennian Orogen of Fennoscandia. The Early and Late Svecofennian stages of regional high-temperature metamorphism and related plutonism are distinguished from isotopic evidence. The composition, structural features, and asynchronous peaks of endogenic activity within the orogen indicate that at least two zones (inner and outer) should be distinguished in the Svecofennides. The lateral heterogeneity of the orogen in present-day coordinates is traced southward from the margin of the Archean craton. The conjugation zone of the Svecofennian Orogen and the Archean Karelian Craton is characterized by transition from negative to positive εNd (1.9 Ga) values as evidence for a decreased contribution of Archean crustal material to the source of Proterozoic granitoids from the north toward the Proterozoic domain in the south. With allowance for lateral compositional and isotopic heterogeneity of the Svecofennian Orogen and asynchronous culmination of endogenic events in different parts of this orogen, a new scheme of tectonic regionalization has been proposed.

The Lachlan Transverse Zone is a major yet subtle west‐northwest‐trending structure that cuts across the Tasmanides of southeastern Australia. It extends from the western part of the Olepoloko Fault in the west, where it marks the boundary between the Delamerian and Thomson Orogens, across the Lachlan Orogen into the Sydney Basin where it is represented by dykes and intrusions. The western part of the Lachlan Transverse Zone is defined by west‐northwest‐trending faults. In the Eastern Belt of the Lachlan Orogen, it is defined as a corridor of west‐northwest‐trending folds and faults that disrupt major folds and faults which constitute the regional grain of the orogen. The Lachlan Transverse Zone was active in the development of the Lachlan Orogen since at least the Middle Ordovician period. It has influenced the partitioning of upper crustal extensional and contractional deformation, the intrusion of igneous bodies as well as the distribution of copper‐gold deposits in the Eastern Belt of the orogen. The Lachlan Transverse Zone appears to be an extension of the Proterozoic Amadeus Transverse Zone, as well as an extension of a west‐northwest‐trending transform segment in the Tasman Line that controlled the Neoproterozoic and Cambrian breakup of cratonic Australia. For these reasons, we suggest that the Lachlan Transverse Zone represents the reactivation of a fundamental crustal weakness in the cratonic lithosphere that propagated into younger Neoproterozoic to Palaeozoic lithosphere of oceanic and continental character.

A 3D model of deep crustal structure of the Archaean Karelia Craton and late Palaeoproterozoic Svecofennian Accretionary Orogen including the boundary zone is presented. The model is based on the combination of data from geological mapping and reflection seismic studies, along profiles 1-EU, 4B, FIRE-1-2a-2 and FIRE-3-3a, and uses results of magnetotelluric soundings in southern Finland and northern Karelia. A seismogeological model of the crust and crust–mantle boundary is compared with a model of subhorizontal velocity-density layering of the crust. The TTG-type crust of the Palaeoarchaean and Mesoarchaean microcontinents within the Karelia Craton and the Belomorian Province are separated by gently dipping greenstone belts, at least some of which are palaeosutures. The structure of the crust was determined mainly by Palaeoproterozoic tectonism in the intra-continental settings modified by a strong collisional compression at the end of the Palaeoproterozoic. New insights into structure, origin and evolution of the Svecofennian Orogen are provided. The accretionary complex is characterized by inclined tectonic layering: the tectonic sheets, ~15 km thick, are composed of volcanic-sedimentary rocks, including electro-conductive graphite-bearing sedimentary rocks, and electro-resistive granitoids, which plunge monotonously and consecutively eastward. Upon reaching the level of the lower crust, the tectonic sheets of the accretionary complex lose their distinct outlines. In the seismic reflection pattern they are replaced by a uniform acoustically translucent medium, where separate sheets can only be traced fragmentarily. The crust–mantle boundary bears a diffuse character: the transition from crust to mantle is recorded by the disappearance of the vaguely drawn boundaries of the tectonic sheets and in the gradual transition of acoustically homogeneous and translucent lower crust into transparent mantle. Under the effect of endogenic heat flow, the accretionary complex underwent high-temperature metamorphism and partial melting. Blurring of the rock contacts, which in the initial state created contrasts of acoustic impedance, was caused by partial melting and mixing of melts. The 3D model is used as a starting point for the evolutionary model of the Svecofennian Accretionary Orogen and for determination of its place in the history of the Palaeoproterozoic Lauro-Russian intracontinental orogeny, which encompassed a predominant part of the territory of Lauroscandia, a palaeocontinent combining North American and East European cratons. The model includes three stages in the evolution of the Lauro-Russian Orogen (~2.5, 2.2–2.1 and 1.95–1.87 Ga). The main feature of the Palaeoproterozoic evolution of the accretionary Svecofennian Orogen and Lauroscandia as a whole lay in the causal link with evolution of a superplume, which initiated plate-tectonic events. The Svecofennian–Pre-Labradorian palaeo-ocean originated in the superplume axial zone; the accretionary orogens were formed along both continental margins due to closure of the palaeo-ocean.

The eastern part of the Tasman Orogenic Zone (or Fold Belt System) comprises the Hodgkinson—Broken River Orogen (or Fold Belt) in the north and the New England Orogen (or Fold Belt) in the centre and south. The two orogens are separated by the northern part of the Thomson Orogen. The Hodgkinson—Broken River Orogen contains Ordovician to Early Carboniferous sequences of volcaniclastic flysch with subordinate shelf carbonate facies sediments. Two provinces are recognized, the Hodgkinson Province in the north and the Broken River Province in the south. Unlike the New England Orogen where no Precambrian is known, rocks of the Hodgkinson—Broken River Orogen were deposited immediately east of and in part on, Precambrian crust. The evolution of the New England Orogen spans the time range Silurian to Triassic. The orogen is orientated at an acute angle to the mainly older Thomson and Lachlan Orogens to the west, but the relationships between all three orogens are obscured by the Permian—Triassic Bowen and Sydney Basins and younger Mesozoic cover. Three provinces are recognized, the Yarrol Province in the north, the Gympie Province in the east and the New England Province in the south. Both the Yarrol and New England Provinces are divisible into two zones, western and eastern, that are now separated by major Alpine-type ultramafic belts. The western zones developed at least in part on early Palaeozoic continental crust. They comprise Late Silurian to Early Permian volcanic-arc deposits (both island-arc and terrestrial Andean types) and volcaniclastic sediments laid down on unstable continental shelves. The eastern zones probably developed on oceanic crust and comprise pelagic sediments, thick flysch sequences and ophiolite suite rocks of Silurian (or older?) to Early Permian age. The Gympie Province comprises Permian to Early Triassic volcanics and shallow marine and minor paralic sediments which are now separated from the Yarrol Province by a discontinuous serpentinite belt.In morphotectonic terms, a Pacific-type continental margin with a three-part arrangement of calcalkaline volcanic arc in the west, unstable volcaniclastic continental shelf in the centre and continental slope and oceanic basin in the east, appears to have existed in the New England Orogen and probably in the Hodgkinson—Broken River Orogen as well, through much of mid- to late Palaeozoic time. However, the easternmost part of the New England Orogen, the Gympie Province, does not fit this pattern since it lies east of deepwater flysch deposits of the Yarrol Province.

The Thomson Orogen forms the northwestern segment of the Tasman Orogenic Zone. It was a tectonically active area with several episodes of deposition, deformation and plutonism from Cambrian to Carboniferous time.Only the northeastern part of the orogen is exposed; the remainder is covered by gently folded Permian and Mesozoic sediments of the Galilee, Cooper and Great Artesian Basins. Information on the concealed Thomson Orogen is available from geophysical surveys and petroleum exploration wells which have penetrated the Permian and Mesozoic cover. The boundaries of the Thomson Orogen with other tectonic units are concealed, but discordant trends suggest that they are abrupt. To the west, the orogen is bordered by Proterozoic structural blocks which form basement west of the northeast-trending Diamantina River Lineament. The most appropriate boundary with the Lachlan and Kanmantoo Orogens to the south is an arcuate line marking a distinct change in the direction of gravity trends. The north-northwest orientation of the northern part of the New England Orogen to the east cuts strongly across the dominant northeast trend of the Thomson Orogen. The Thomson Orogen developed as a tectonic entity in latest Proterozoic or Early Cambrian time when the former northern extension of the Adelaide Orogen * was truncated along the Muloorinna Ridge. Early Palaeozoic deposition was dominated by finegrained, quartz-rich clastic sediments. Cambrian carbonates accumulated in the southwest and a Cambro-Ordovician island arc was active in the north. Along the western margin of the orogen, sediments were probably laid down on downfaulted blocks of deformed Proterozoic rocks, with oceanic crust further to the east.A mid- to Late Ordovician orogeny which affected the whole of the Thomson Orogen marked the climax of its precratonic (orogenic) stage. The northeast structural trend of the orogen (parallel to its western boundary with the Precambrian craton) was imposed at this time and has controlled the orientation of later folding and faulting. Up to three generations of folding have been recognized and fine-grained metasediments exhibit a prominent slaty cleavage. Metamorphism was to the greenschist and amphibolite facies, the highest grade rocks being associated with synorogenic granodiorite batholiths in the north. Following deposition of Late Ordovician marine sediments at the eastern margin, emplacement of post-tectonic Late Silurian or Early Devonian batholiths ended the precratonic history of the Thomson Orogen. The subsequent transitional tectonic regime was characterized by deposition of Devonian to Early Carboniferous shallow marine and continental sediments including widespread red-beds and andesitic volcanics. The maximum marine transgression occurred in the early Middle Devonian. Localized folding affected the easternmost part of the Thomson Orogen at the end of Middle Devonian time and was followed by intrusion of Devono-Carboniferous granitic plutons. However, the terminal orogeny which deformed all Devonian to Early Carboniferous rocks of the orogen was of mid-Carboniferous age. It produced northeast-trending open folds and normal and high-angle reverse faults which are considered to reflect basement structures. The cratonization of the Thomson Orogen was completed with the emplacement of Late Carboniferous granites and the eruption of comagmatic volcanics in the northeast, permian and Mesozoic sediments accumulated in broad, relatively shallow down warps which covered most of the former orogen.

What Happened in the Trans-North China Orogen in the Period 2560-1850 Ma?
The Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO) was a Paleoproterozic continent-continent collisional belt along which the Eastern and Western Blocks amalgamated to form a coherent North China Craton (NCC). Recent geological, structural, geochemical and isotopic data show that the orogen was a continental margin or Japan-type arc along the western margin of the Eastern Block, which was separated from the Western Block by an old ocean, with eastward-directed subduction of the oceanic lithosphere beneath the western margin of the Eastern Block. At 2550-2520 Ma, the deep subduction caused partial melting of the medium-lower crust, producing copious granitoid magma that was intruded into the upper levels of the crust to form granitoid plutons in the low- to medium-grade granite-greeustone terranes. At 2530-2520 Ma, subduction of the oceanic lithosphere caused partial melting of the mantle wedge, which led to underplating of mafic magma in the lower crust and widespread mafic and minor felsic volcanism in the arc, forming part of the greenstone assemblages. Extension driven by widespread mafic to felsic volcanism led to the development of back-arc and/or intra-arc basins in the orogen. At 2520-2475 Ma, the subduction caused further partial melting of the lower crust to form large amounts of tonalitic-trondhjemitic-granodioritic (TTG) magmatism. At this time following further extension of back-arc basins, episodic granitoid magmatism occurred, resulting in the emplacement of 2360 Ma, -2250 Ma 2110-21760 Ma and -2050 Ma granites in the orogen. Contemporary volcano-sedimentary rocks developed in the back-arc or intra-are basins. At 2150-1920 Ma, the orogen underwent several extensional events, possibly due to subduction of an oceanic ridge, leading to emplacement of mafic dykes that were subsequently metamorphosed to amphibolites and medium- to high-pressure mafic granulites. At 1880-1820 Ma, the ocean between the Eastern and Western Blocks was completely consumed by subduction, and the dosing of the ocean led to the continent-arc-continent collision, which caused large-scale thrusting and isoclinal folds and transported some of the rocks into the lower crustal levels or upper mantle to form granulites or eclogites. Peak metamorphism was followed by exhumation/uplift, resulting in widespread development of asymmetric folds and symplectic textures in the rocks.

The integral 3D model of the deep structure of the Early Precambrian crust in the East European Craton is based on interpretation of the 1-EU, 4B, and TATSEIS seismic CDP profiles in Russia and the adjacent territory of Finland (FIRE project). The geological interpretation of seismic images of the crust is carried out in combination with consideration of geological and geophysical data on the structure of the Fennoscandian Shield and the basement of the East European platform. The model displays tectonically delaminated crust with a predominance of low-angle boundaries between the main tectonic units and the complex structure of the crust-mantle interface, allowing correlation of the deep structure of the Archean Kola, Karelian, and Kursk granite-greenstone terrane with the Volgo-Uralia granulite-gneiss terrane, as well as the Paleoproterozoic intracontinental collision orogens (the Lapland-Mid-Russia-South Baltia orogen and the East Voronezh and Ryazan-Saratov orogens) with the Svecofennian accretionary orogen. The lower crustal “layer” at the base of the Paleoproterozoic orogens and Archean cratons was formed in the Early Paleoproterozoic as a result of underplating and intraplating by mantle-plume mafic magmas and granulite-facies metamorphism. The increase in the thickness of this “layer” was related to hummocking of the lower crustal sheets along with reverse and thrust faulting in the upper crust. The middle crust was distinguished by lower rigidity and affected by ductile deformation. The crust of the Svecofennian Orogen is composed of tectonic sheets plunging to the northeast and consisting of island-arc, backarc, and other types of rocks. These sheets are traced in seismic sections to the crust-mantle interface.

Abstract

Multi-scale, multi-method integration of geological constraints, with new interpretations of potential field data and seismic reflection data, has resulted in a comprehensive structural interpretation of the southern Thomson Orogen, eastern Australia. The interpretation reveals ~50 major faults and shear zones, many of which can be traced for several hundred kilometres. The interpretation suggests that the southern Thomson Orogen can be subdivided into several structural domains that can be distinguished by differences in: (i) spatial orientation, (ii) geographic distribution, and (iii) partly the timing of major faults, but also to varying degrees by (iv) the evolution and spatial orientation of other structural elements, such as folds, minor faults and fractures, (v) broader lithological trends, (vi) stratigraphy, and (vii) structural style. The two largest domains are the Western Structural Domain that contains numerous faults and shear zones, and the fold-dominated Eastern Structural Domain, which is more strongly affected by late- to post-Devonian thrusting than the Western Structural Domain. Notwithstanding their differences, the domains can be integrated into a coherent structural model for the southern Thomson Orogen, which suggests that the area represents a set of megafolds or oroclines, which may have formed during the Bindian Orogeny.

The Texas and Coffs Harbour oroclines are defined by a Z-shaped curvature in the southern New England Orogen (eastern Australia), but the geometry and kinematics of faults around these oroclines, as well as their possible role during oroclinal bending, have hitherto not been understood. Using aeromagnetic and open file seismic data, as well as field observations, the pattern, geometry and kinematics of fault systems, have been investigated. Fault traces with a strike-slip component are oriented parallel to the curved magnetic and structural fabrics of the Texas and Coffs Harbour oroclines. Our observations show evidence for sinistral or sinistral-reverse, dextral (or dextral-reverse) and normal kinematics along NW-striking faults. The dominant kinematics along NNE- and NE-striking faults is dextral or dextral-reverse. The timing of faulting is not well constrained, but the ubiquitous recognition of orocline-parallel faults may suggest that a flexural slip mechanism operated during oroclinal bending in the early–middle Permian (ca 299–265 Ma). Our observations indicate that many of the orocline-parallel faults, with strike-slip separation, were reactivated during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, as indicated by the recognition of displaced Triassic granitoids, Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and Cenozoic basalts.

The basement rocks of the poorly understood Thomson Orogen are concealed by mid-Paleozoic to Upper Cretaceous intra-continental basins and direct information about the orogen is gleaned from sparse geological data. Constrained potential field forward modelling has been undertaken to highlight key features and resolve deeply sourced anomalies within the Thomson Orogen. The Thomson Orogen is characterised by long-wavelength and low-amplitude geophysical anomalies when compared with the northern and western Precambrian terranes of the Australian continent. Prominent NE- and NW-trending gravity anomalies reflect the fault architecture of the region. High-intensity Bouguer gravity anomalies correlate with shallow basement rocks. Bouguer gravity anomalies below –300 µm/s2 define the distribution of the Devonian Adavale Basin and associated troughs. The magnetic grid shows smooth textures, punctuated by short-wavelength, high-intensity anomalies that indicate magnetic contribution at different crustal levels. It is interpreted that meta-sedimentary basement rocks of the Thomson Orogen, intersected in several drill holes, are representative of a seismically non-reflective and non-magnetic upper basement. Short-wavelength, high-intensity magnetic source bodies and colocated negative Bouguer gravity responses are interpreted to represent shallow granitic intrusions. Long-wavelength magnetic anomalies are inferred to reflect the topography of a seismically reflective and magnetic lower basement. Potential field forward modelling indicates that the Thomson Orogen might be a single terrane. We interpret that the lower basement consists of attenuated Precambrian and mafic enriched continental crust, which differs from the oceanic crust of the Lachlan Orogen further south.

The Palaeoproterozoic Usagaran Orogen of Tanzania contains the Earth's oldest reported examples of subduction-related eclogite facies rocks. Detailed field mapping of gneisses exposed in the high-grade, eclogite-bearing part of the orogen (the Isimani Suite) indicates a complex deformation and thermal history. Deformation in the Isimani Suite can be broadly subdivided into five events. The first of these (D1), associated with formation of eclogite facies metamorphism, is strongly overprinted by a pervasive deformation (D2) at amphibolite facies conditions, which resulted in the accumulation of high strains throughout all of the exposed Isimani rocks. The geometry of foliations and lineations developed during D2 deformation are variable and have different shear directions that enable five D2 domains to be identified. Analysis of these domains indicates a geometrical and kinematic pattern that is interpreted to have formed by strain and kinematic partitioning during sinistral transpression. U–Pb SHRIMP zircon ages from a post-D2 granite and previously published geochronological data from the Usagaran eclogites indicate this deformation took place between 2000 ± 1 Ma and 1877 ± 7 Ma (at 1σ error). Subsequent greenschist facies deformation, localised as shear zones on boundaries separating D2 domains, have both contractional and extensional geometries that indicate post-1877 Ma reactivation of the Isimani Suite. This reactivation may have taken place during Palaeoproterozoic exhumation of the Usagaran Orogen or may be the result of deformation associated with the Neoproterozoic East African Orogen.U–Th–Pb SHRIMP zircon ages from an Isimani gneiss sample and xenocrysts in a “post-tectonic” granite yield 2.7 Ga ages and are similar to published Nd model ages from both the Tanzanian Craton and gneiss exposed east of the Usagaran belt in the East African Orogen. These age data indicate that the Isimani Suite of the Usagaran Orogen reflects reworking of Archaean continental crust. The extensive distribution of 2.7 Ga crust in both the footwall and hangingwall of the Usagaran Orogen can only be explained by the collision of two continents if the continents fortuitously had the same protolith ages. We propose that a more likely scenario is that the protoliths of the mafic eclogites were erupted in a marginal basin setting as either oceanic crust, or as limited extrusions along the rifted margin of the Tanzanian Craton. The Usagaran Orogen may therefore reflect the mid-Palaeoproterozoic reassembly of a continental ribbon partially or completely rifted off the craton and separated from it by a marginal basin.

The map-view structure of the southern New England Orogen in the eastern Gondwanan margin is characterised by four tight orogenic-scale curvatures: Texas, Coffs-Harbour, Manning and Nambucca oroclines. Here we focus on the geometry of the Manning Orocline and examine whether the inner-arc area of the oroclinal structure is expressed within the accretionary wedge rocks of the Tablelands Complex. Our observations from the Tablelands Complex (Armidale–Walcha area) show that rocks were subjected to penetrative deformation (D1), which resulted in a regional slaty cleavage (S1) and related isoclinal folds. This was followed by subsequent deformation (D2) associated with minor gentle folds. In a larger scale, the steeply dipping S1 structural fabric shows a continuous map-view curvature, thus defining a macroscopic fold structure. We interpret this macroscopic fold as the expression of the Manning Orocline within the accretionary wedge complex. This interpretation is consistent with the contorted spatial distribution of other tectonic elements (serpentinite belt, forearc basin terranes and early Permian granitoids), which independently define the structure of the Manning Orocline. Our new structural data support the existence of the Manning Orocline and the quadruple oroclinal geometry of the whole southern New England Orogen. The origin of these oroclines is attributed to multiple stages of bending, possibly associated with an earlier phase of curvature during slab rollback (in the early Permian), followed by a subsequent (middle-late Permian) episode of contractional deformation that tightened the oroclinal structure.

The Neoproterozoic Adamastor-Brazilide Ocean was generated during the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent, and remnants of its oceanic lithosphere have been found in the Brasiliano-Pan African orogenic system that includes the Araçuaí, West-Congo, Brasília, Ribeira, Kaoko, Dom Feliciano, Damara and Gariep belts. The Araçuaí and the West-Congo belts are counterparts of the same Neoproterozoic orogen. The first belt comprises two thirds of the Araçuaí-West-Congo Orogen. This orogen is rather unique owing to its confined nature within the embayment outlined by the São Francisco and Congo cratons. In spite of this, the presence of ophiolitic remnants, and a calc-alkaline magmatic arc, indicate that the basin/orogen evolution comprise both oceanic spreading and consumption. It is assumed that coeval Paramirim and Sangha aulacogens played a key role by making room for the Araçuaí-West-Congo Basin. Sedimentary successions record all major stages of a basin that evolved from continental rift, when glaciation-related sedimentation was very significant, to passive margin. Rifting started around 1.0–0.9 Ga. The oceanic stage is constrained by an ophiolitic remnant dated at 0.8 Ga. If the cratonic bridge that once linked the São Francisco and Congo palaeocontinental regions did not hinder the opening of an ocean basin, it certainly limited its width. As a consequence, only a narrow oceanic lithosphere was generated, and it was subducted afterwards. This is also suggested by orogenic calc-alkaline granitoids occuping a small area of the orogen. Geochronological data for pre-, syn- and late-collisional granitoids indicate that the orogenic stage lasted from 625 Ma to 570 Ma. A period of magmatic quiescence was followed by intrusion of postcollisional plutons at 535–500 Ma. The features of the Araçuaí-West-Congo Orogen suggest the development of a complete Wilson Cycle in a branch of the Adamastor Ocean, which can be interpreted as a gulf with limited generation of oceanic lithosphere.

Geochemical and Sm‐Nd isotopic data, and 19 ion‐microprobe U‐Pb zircon dates are reported for gneiss and granite from the eastern part of the Albany‐Fraser Orogen. The orogen is dominated by granitic rocks derived from sources containing both Late Archaean and mantle‐derived components. Four major plutonic episodes have been identified at ca 2630 Ma, 1700–1600 Ma, ca 1300 Ma and ca 1160 Ma. Orthogneiss, largely derived from ca 2630 Ma and 1700–1600 Ma granitic precursors, forms a belt along the southeastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton. These rocks, together with gabbro of the Fraser Complex, were intruded by granitic magmas and metamorphosed in the granulite facies at ca 1300 Ma. They were then rapidly uplifted and transported westward along low‐angle thrust faults over the southeastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton. Between ca 1190 and 1130 Ma, granitic magmas were intruded throughout the eastern part of the orogen. These new data are integrated into a review of the geological evolution of the Albany‐Fraser Orogen and adjacent margin of eastern Antarctica, and possibly related rocks in the Musgrave Complex and Gawler Craton.

The Sheep Mountain‐Little Sheep Mountain Anticlines, Bighorn Basin (USA) formed as basement‐cored Laramide structures in the formerly undeformed foreland of the thin‐skinned Sevier orogen. We take advantage of the well‐constrained microstructural network there to reconstruct differential stress magnitudes that prevailed during both Sevier and Laramide layer‐parallel shortening (LPS), before the onset of large‐scale folding. Differential stress magnitudes determined from tectonic stylolites are compared and combined to previous stress estimates from calcite twinning paleopiezometry in the same formations. During stress loading related to LPS, differential stress magnitudes transmitted from the distant Sevier thin‐skinned orogen into the sedimentary cover of the Bighorn basin (11–43 MPa) are higher than the differential stress magnitudes accompanying the early stage of LPS related to the thick‐skinned Laramide deformation (2–19 MPa). This study illustrates that the tectonic style of an orogen affects the transmission of early orogenic stress into the stable continental interior.

The Qinling Orogen, central China, was constructed during the Mesozoic collision between the North China and Yangtze continental plates. The orogen includes four tectonic units, from north to south, the Huaxiong Block (reactivated southern margin of the North China Craton), North Qinling Accretion Belt, South Qinling Fold Belt (or block) and Songpan Fold Belt, evolved from the northernmost Paleo-Tethys Ocean separating the Gondwana and Laurentia supercontinents. Here we employ detrital zircons from the Early Cretaceous alluvial sediments within the Qinling Orogen to trace the tectonic evolution of the orogen. The U–Pb ages of the detrital zircon grains from the Early Cretaceous Donghe Group sediments in the South Qinling Fold Belt cluster around 2600–2300 Ma, 2050–1800 Ma, 1200–700 Ma, 650–400 Ma and 350–200 Ma, corresponding to the global Kenorland, Columbia, Rodinia, Gondwana and Pangaea supercontinent events, respectively. The distributions of ages and εHf(t) values of zircon grains show that the Donghe Group sediments have a complex source comprising components mainly recycled from the North Qinling Accretion Belt and the North China Craton, suggesting that the South Qinling Fold Belt was a part of the united Qinling–North China continental plate, rather than an isolated microcontinent, during the Devonian–Triassic. The youngest age peak of 350–200 Ma reflects the magmatic event related to subduction and termination of the Mian-Lue oceanic plate, followed by the collision between the Yangtze Craton and the united Qinling–North China continent that came into existence at the Triassic–Jurassic transition. The interval of 208–145 Ma between the sedimentation of the Early Cretaceous Donghe Group and the youngest age of detrital zircons was coeval with the post-subduction collision between the Yangtze and the North China continental plates in Jurassic.
