The Pliocene-Pleistocene subaerial volcanic activity of the island of Sardinia developed from about five million years ago to the Pleistocene. Volcanism was mainly fissural, related to rifting of the Sardinian crustal block and connected to intraplate tensional tectonics involving at the same time the area of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Areally the most abundant rocks are basic, ranging in serial character from alkaline to subalkaline types. In some areas intermediate and salic lavas also occur; trachytic and phonolitic rocks are mainly associated with basalts of alkaline affinity, whereas rhyolites and dacites are mainly related to subalkalic basalts. K/Ar data show that lavas of different serial character (from alkalic to subalkalic) are produced on the island within the same time range, from about four to two million years; it is to be noted, however, that the early products (about 5 million years) are mildly alkalic in character whereas most of the youngest products (0.6–0.14 million years) are strongly alkalic.  相似文献

On the coastal plain in the southwestern part of the Yemen Arab Republic, near Al Mukha, stands a volcanic centre known as Jabal an Nar that had been considered an active volcano. However, our geochronological and petrographical data show that this centre has an Upper Miocene age (about 10 m.y.) and consists of basalts and andesitic basalts (tholeiitic) different in composition from the products of the Aden Volcanic Series. The magmatic activity at 10 m.y. represents the first volcanic phase after the emplacement of the Trap Series.  相似文献

Six new analyses of young basaltic rocks from the Bayuda field show the predominant rock types to be strongly undersaturated basanites and nepheline trachybasalts. Both types are believed to represent magmas of deep-seated origin. Similar rocks are widely distributed in north-east Africa but mildly alkaline to tholeiitic basalts were erupted along the eastern margin of the continent in early and late Cainozoic times, whereas along the Tripoli-Tibesti zone to the west mildly alkaline basalts were probably confined to the early Tertiary. The Tripoli-Tibesti zone was one of uplift and strongly tensional tectonics in the late Mesozoic and early Cainozoic, and at this time may have been a line of potential lithospheric rifting, but a period of quiescence followed and resurgence of activity in the late Cainozoic produced weaker tensional structures and more strongly alkaline basic magmas. The region between these two main zones of activity was characterized throughout by intermittent alkaline volcanicity and weak tectonism. Neverthless, fracture zones which apparently controlled the volcanicity are beginning to be recognized in this area. It is argued that African volcanic activity is related to linear, rather than circumscribed, areas of mantle activity. Possible connections with epeirogenic movements within the Alpine orogenic belt appear to have been neglected in the debate on the causes of African igneous activity.  相似文献

1) Petrochemical studies of volcanic rocks shows that alkaline rocks of continents and oceans are different genetically in spite of their mineralogical and chemical similarity. 2) Oceanic rocks develop according to the following type: tholeiitic basalt — olivine basalt — alkaline rocks. 3) Continental alkaline rocks are derivatives of initially alkaline basalts and are connected by gradual transitions with calc-alkaline rocks of island arcs. 4) The source of all volcanic rocks is the upper mantle. Therefore the existence of two main types of rocks — oceanic and continental — reflects basic heterogeneities in composition and structure of the upper mantle.  相似文献

The paper summarizes the geochemical and petrogenetic aspects of an investigation of late Tertiary to Recent volcanic rocks in the Amboseli area of southern Kenya. A study of chemical variations in the Amboseli and Kilimanjaro lavas distinguishes a mildly alkaline series (alkali olivine basalts, trachybasalts/trachyandesites, trachytes, rhomb porphyries and phonolites) from a strongly alkaline series embracing subordinate nephelinitic, phonolitic and tephritic lavas. The two series probably evolved independently from a source in the mantle. A comparison of Kilimanjaro with other East African volcanoes shows that the focus of strongly alkaline volcanicity moved from eastern Uganda and western Kenya to northern Tanzania at the end of Miocene times. The Pliocene to Recent centres near the Kenya-Tanzania border show evidence of decreasing alkalinity from a western zone of nephelinite-phonolite volcanoes to an eastern region in which central volcanoes are characterized by the association of strongly and mildly alkaline suites.  相似文献

Study of Tertiary volcanic rocks from Mt. Tamborine in S. E. Queensland, Australia, suggests that some basalts from the large Tweed vent are intermediate in character between true tholeiites and well documented alkaline basalts of the Australian Tertiary province. Geochemical evidence and comparison with synthetic systems suggests that the transitional lavas are derived by continuous fractional crystallization during the ascent of a parent magma produced by substantial partial melting of the upper mantle at moderate depths and pressures. Alkaline basalts that underlie the transitional basalts are the result of relatively rapid, intermittent extrusion of magma generated by a smaller degree of partial melting of the upper mantle. This interpretation resolves the difficulties posed by an apparent inversion of the usual stratigraphic relationship of tholeiites capped by alkali basalts, and is in accord with recent seismic studies of the continental margin of eastern Australia.  相似文献

K/Ar and fission track age measurements were performed on lava samples of Monte Amiata volcano (Central Italy) which is formed by a sequence of lava flows and lava domes ranging in composition from trachybasalts to high-SiO2 quartzlatites. The ages obtained, except for the oldest volcanic products, range from 290,000 to 180,000 years. Excess40Ar was found in some mineral separates, especially biotite, causing apparent rather old ages. The correct ages were calculated by means of K/Ar isochrons, and were found to be very similar to the ages calculated on sanidine separates. The volcanic activity that built up the outcropping Monte Amiata units seems to have lasted a relatively short time.  相似文献

Geology and volcanology of the Edd-Bahar Assoli area (Ethiopia)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The paper presents geological and petrological data on one of the alkaline ranges developed along the borders of the Afar depression (Ethiopia). These alkaline ranges occur in a position transversal to the dominant NNW trend of the spreading zones of northern and central Afar which are characterized by magmas of tholeiitic affinity. The Edd-Bahar Assoli volcanic range consists of broad fields of basic lavas and numerous spatter cones outcropping in the area extending between 13°25′ and 13°75′ lat. N and 41°38′ and 42°15′ long. E. The mineralogical assemblage and the chemical data point to an alkaline nature for this range consisting mainly of alkali olivine basalts and basalts tending to hawaiites, the most evolved terms being largely subordinate. Petrologic differences between the Assab, Edd-Bahar Assoli and Erta Ale ranges are shown. The Edd-Bahar Assoli alkaline volcanism would be related to tectonic patterns trending both from NNW-SSE to N-S and from NE-SW to E-W. The supposed similarity with the transverse structure of the equatorial Atlantic ocean would thus not completely be ascertained in this zone. In Afar, the coexistence of an axial volcanism of tholeiitic affinity with an alkaline volcanism at the margin can better be explained by models based upon the upper mantle temperature distribution in a zone under oceanization.  相似文献

New geochemical and 40Ar/39Ar age data are presented from the Neogene volcanic units of the Karaburun Peninsula, the westernmost part of Western Anatolia. The volcanic rocks in the region are associated with Neogene lacustrine deposition and are characterized by (1) olivine-bearing basaltic-andesites to shoshonites (Karaburun volcanics), high-K calc-alkaline andesites, dacites and latites (Yaylaköy, Arma?anda? and Kocada? volcanics) of ~ 16–18 Ma, and (2) mildly-alkaline basalts (Ovac?k basalt) and rhyolites (Urla volcanics) of ~ 11–12 Ma. The first group of rocks is enriched in LILE and LREE with respect to the HREE and HFSE on N-MORB-normalised REE and multi-element spider diagrams. They are comparable geochemically with volcanic rocks in the surrounding regions such as Chios Island and other localities in Western Anatolia. The Ovac?k basalt is geochemically similar to the first stage early–middle Miocene volcanic rocks but differs from NW Anatolian late Miocene alkali basalts.  相似文献

A series of comagmatic volcanic materials originated by subaerial eruptions that happened during the Neogene in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) are studied in this work. The sequence consists of flows (basalts, basanites, tephrites) underlying volcanic agglomerate sheets. The whole unit, which reaches a maximum thickness greater than 700 m, is cut by a number of phonolite plugs. Flows, agglomerate sheets and plugs are genetically related, forming a differentiation series whose evolution has been rather complex: crystal fractionation, amphibole resorption, changes in oxygen pressure and gaseous transfer have played a role in the genesis of these volcanics. From an evolutionary point of view, the Roque Nublo Formation can be described as an alkaline series with two different undersaturated zones (tephritic flows and phonolitic domes) separated by a maximum of saturation (the agglomerate matrix is chemically a trachyte). In this respect, the Roque Nublo Formation is similar to the alkaline Cantal series, although in Gran Canaria the relations between trachytes and phonolites seem to be better defined. As for the agglomerates, their uncommon characteristics (heterogeneous and very poorly sorted boulders predominating over a vitroclastic welded matrix) lead one to think that they were produced by an unusual kind of cruption; certainly not by the « nuée ardente » types which have been repeatedly postulated before. The author’s suggestion is that these agglomerates (« Roque Nublo type ») were formed in ignimbritic-style eruptions of higy-viscosity magmas contained in very high-pressure chambers.  相似文献

40Ar/39Ar age data on alkalic and tholeiitic basalts from Diakakuji and Kinmei Seamounts in the vicinity of the Hawaiian-Emperor bend indicate that these volcanoes are about 41 and 39 m.y. old, respectively. Combined with previously published age data on Yuryaku and Ko¯ko Seamounts, the new data indicate that the best age for the bend is 42.0 ± 1.4 m.y.Petrochemical data indicate that the volcanic rocks recovered from bend seamounts are indistinguishable from Hawaiian volcanic rocks, strengthening the hypothesis that the Hawaiian-Emperor bend is part of the Hawaiian volcanic chain.40Ar/39Ar total fusion ages on altered whole-rock basalt samples are consistent with feldspar ages and with40Ar/39Ar incremental heating data and appear to reflect the crystallization ages of the samples even though conventional K-Ar ages are significantly younger. The cause of this effect is not known but it may be due to low-temperature loss of39Ar from nonretentive montmorillonite clays that have also lost40Ar.  相似文献

Tertiary volcanic rocks of Carriacou occupy two-thirds of the island. The volcanics include volcaniclastics, lava flows and dome lavas and range in composition from basalts to andesites. Carriacou basalts fall into two petrographic types (a) clinopyroxene-plagioclase-phyric basalts and (b) olivine microphyric basalts; the latter having higher MgO and lower Al2O3 than the clinopyroxene basalts. Both types are unusually rich in mafic minerals compared with Lesser Antilles basalts in general, although similar types have been reported from the nearby island of Grenada. The potash to silica ratios are relatively high and confirm the similarity between Carriacou and Grenada basalts and the differences between these basalts and basalts from other islands of the Lesser Antilles. The basaltic andesites and andesites from Carriacou correspond closely in mineralogical and chemical composition with typical andesites found elsewhere in the Lesser Antilles. The geochemistry of the volcanics shows that the olivine microphyric basalts display tholeiitic affinities whereas the clinopyroxeneplagioclase-phyric basalt, basaltic andesites and andesites are calcalkaline. The compositional gradation in both the geochemistry and mineralogy of these volcanics suggests that fractional crystallization played an important role in the derivation of the various magma.  相似文献

We describe the mode of occurrence and geochemical characteristics of basalts, in the Khangai–Khentei belt in Mongolia, overlain by Middle Paleozoic radiolarian chert in an extensive accretionary complex. These basalts are greatly enriched in K, Ti, Fe, P, Rb, Ba, Th, and Nb in comparison to the composition of the mid‐ocean ridge basalts, indicative of within‐plate alkaline type. Ti/Y vs Nb/Y and MnO/TiO2/P2O5 ratios of the basalts also suggest within‐plate affinities. Considering the geochemical characteristics as well as the conformable relationship with the overlying radiolarian chert, the alkaline basalts were clearly not continental but formed a pelagic oceanic island. The mode of occurrence and geochemistry of the basalts show that the alkaline basaltic volcanic activity had taken place to form an oceanic island in the Paleozoic pelagic region sufficiently far from continents to allow radiolarian ooze accumulation.  相似文献

True rhyolites are found in two contrasting occurrences in Central America: in recent obsidian domes in the basalt-rhyolite association of southeastern Guatemala, and in late Tertiary ignimbrites in Honduras and adjacent parts of Nicaragua. Both are on the inner side of the main volcanic axis in a region that is visibly underlain by older metamorphic and plutonic rocks. They have not been found in southern Central America where the basement series consists only of older volcanic rocks, eugeosynclinal sediments, and peridotite. Rhyolite obsidian has erupted alternately with basalts in the Obrajuelo Complex of southeastern Guatemala. Cumulate rocks and moderate compositional variations in the basalts provide evidence of limited crystal fractionation, but abundant venocrysts and partially fused xenoliths indicate that partial melting of the plutonic and metamorphic basement may also have been important. Extremely siliceous rhyolite ignimbrites with a volume of several thousands of cubic kilometers closely resemble the rhyolite obsidians in their major element compositions, but in contrast to the totally glassy obsidians they contain abundant phenocrysts of quartz and alkali feldspar. A few ignimbrites contain inclusions of partially melted basement rocks. The basalts with which they are associated have a limited compositional range. Melting experiments performed on rocks of the basement series, together with chemical, isotopic, and volumetric relations, indicate that the ignimbrites are products of partial fusion of the basement series, while obsidians of the Obrajuelo Complex have differentiated from more basic magmas by a process other than crystal fractionation.  相似文献

Anjouan is an extinct and substantially denuded volcanic island, belonging to the Comores Archipelago, a chain of volcanic islands in the northern Mozambique Channel. Volcanism was probably controlled by a complex regional stress pattern, closely implicated with the recent geotectonic evolution of East Africa and the western Indian Ocean. On Anjouan a lengthy period of shield construction was succeeded by fissure-controlled eruptions forming three extended peninsulas to the north, south and west. A ‘rejuvenescent’ phase of activity erupted lavas on to an erosional surface formed during a period of quiescence following build-up of the main volcanic edifice. Lavas of the shield-building stage comprise ankaramites, oceanites and olivine basalts, with minor development of hawaiites and trachytes. The fissure controlled eruptions are also mainly basaltic although generally more alkaline, while rejuvenescent lavas comprise basanites and a significant proportion of derivatives following a trend towards phonolite. Coarse-grained xenoliths are found in lavas of the latter two phases, while a gabbroic intrusion (the ‘Tatinga Intrusion’) is exposed in the centrally-situated Cirque de Bambao in the vicinity of N’Tingui (1595 m). The main chemical trends and petrographic characteristics of the Anjouan lavas are related to the eruptive sequence.  相似文献

K–Ar ages of young basalts (<500 ka) are often higher than the actual eruption age, due to low potassium contents and the frequent presence of excess Ar in olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts. Geological studies in the San Francisco and Uinkaret volcanic fields in Arizona have documented the presence of excess 40Ar and have concluded that K–Ar ages of young basalts in these fields tend to be inaccurate. This new study in the San Francisco volcanic field presents 3Hec and 21Nec ages yielded by olivine and pyroxene collected from three Pleistocene basalt flows – the South Sheba (∼190 ka), SP (∼70 ka), and Doney Mountain (∼67 ka) lava flows, – and from one Holocene basalt, the Bonito Lava Flow (∼1.4 ka) at Sunset Crater. These data indicate that, in two of three cases, 40Ar/39Ar and K–Ar ages of the young basalts agree well with cosmic-ray surface exposure ages of the same lava flow, thus suggesting that excess 40Ar is not always a problem in young basalt flows in the San Francisco volcanic field. The exposure age of the Bonito lava flow agrees within uncertainty with dendrochronological and archeological age determinations. K–Ar and cosmogenic 3He and 21Ne ages from the SP flow are in agreement and much older than the OSL age (5.5–6 ka) reported for this lava flow. Furthermore, if the non-cosmogenic ages are assumed to be accurate, the subsequent calculated production rates at South Sheba and SP flow sample sites agree well with values in the literature.  相似文献

Volcanoes of the McMurdo Volcanic Group occur in four volcanic provinces: Balleny, Hallett, Melbourne and Erebus. The Balleny and Hallet provinces are distributed along the Balleny Fracture Zone and Hallett Fracture respectively. Stratovolcanoes within the Melbourne province may be associated with north to northwest-trending grabens and faults in northern Victoria Land. The Erebus volcanic province is located at the intersection of the Rennick Fault and northeast trending faults along the central Transantarctic Mountains. Within the Erebus province, volcanic centres around Mt. Erebus and Mt. Discovery possess radial symmetry which may be related to radial fractures at approximately 120° to each other.  相似文献

The Trap Series outcropping in the southeastern margin of the Main Ethiopian Rift has a total thickness of not less than 500–600 m. In this series, mainly composed of flood lavas and rare scoriaceous beds, basaltic rocks — which on a serial viewpoint are transitional basalts — are the best represented. Alkali-olivine basalts (with modal and normative nepheline) are interbedded within the lower and middle members of the series, while in the upper members andesine basalts and dark phonolitic tephrites are present. Among the transitional basalts, rocks of alkaline and of tholeiitic affinity are present as shown by petrographic and chemical analyses. On the basis of petrochemical and geovolcanological data, it is probable that these rocks and the phonolitic-tephrites originated from different primary magmas.  相似文献

The volcanic centre of Monte Seda Oro, N. W. Sardinia, representative of a Cenozoic calc-alkaline andesitic suite of rocks is composed of a variety of rocks ranging from high alumina basalts to dacites. The minerals of basaltic, andesitic and dacitic rocks show only limited variation in chemical composition. The geochemical data suggest that the various rock-types are related by a crystal-liquid fractionation. Least-squate numerical calculations, using major element data, support the derivation of andesites with SiO3 content ranging from 53.8 to 59.0% from basalts having about 48.7% of SiO2 by low pressure crystal fractionation of the phenocryst phases present in these rocks. However, the origin of dacites cannot be readily explained by this mechanism.  相似文献
