High temperature drop-solution calorimetry in molten 2 PbO · B2O3 at 1044 K for coesite and stishovite polymorphs of silica was carried out to determine the enthalpy of the coesite-stishovite transition. These experiments were performed on high-purity, single-phase samples of coesite and stishovite. Our new value for the enthalpy of the coesitestishovite transition (ΔH 298 0 ) is 29.85 ± 0.78 kJ/mol, which is about 35% lower than previously reported by Akaogi and Navrotsky (1984) and Holm et al. (1967), but which compares well with new measurements by Akaogi et al. (1994b). Using these new data, we have calculated the equilibrium phase boundary between coesite and stishovite and obtained a slope, dP/dT=0.0031 (2) GPa/K. This calculated slope is in good agreement with that determined [0.0026 (2) GPa/K] from the in-situ X-ray diffraction study of Zhang et al. (1996).  相似文献

Mg-Fe partitioning experiments between (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 spinel and (Mg,Fe)O magnesiowüstite were carried out at pressures of 17–21.3 GPa at temperatures of 1400 and 1600 °C, using a multi-anvil apparatus, in order to determine interaction parameters of spinel and magnesiowüstite solid solutions and also to constrain the equilibrium boundaries of the postspinel transition in the Fe-rich side in the system Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4. The obtained values of the interaction parameters were 3.4 ± 1.5 and 13.9 ± 1.4 kJ mol−1, respectively, for spinel and magnesiowüstite solid solutions at 19 GPa and 1600 °C. The partitioning data in the system Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4 at 1400 and 1600 °C showed that the transition boundary between spinel and the mixture of magnesiowüstite and stishovite has a negative dP/dT slope. Using the above interaction parameters and available thermodynamic data of the Mg2SiO4 and Fe2SiO4 end members, the transition boundaries of spinel to the mixture of magnesiowüstite and stishovite were calculated. Within the uncertainties of the data used, the calculated boundaries are in good agreement with the boundaries at 1400 and 1600 °C experimentally determined in this study. The dissociation boundary of Fe2SiO4 spinel to wüstite and stishovite, calculated from the thermodynamic data, has a negative slope of −1.5 ± 0.6 MPa K−1. The long prism/needle‐shaped polycrystalline quartz aggregates and square/parallelogram‐shaped singlephase quartz inclusions in omphacite and garnet of ultrahigh pressure eclogite were first discovered from the Jiangalesayi area, South Altyn UHP belt. Based on their morphology, these quartz inclusions are quartz paramorphs after stishovite. The minimum peak pressure of the eclogite is estimated to be >8–9 GPa at 800– 1000 °C based on the stability field of stishovite. This new evidence, together with previous stishovite exsolution microstructure in the gneiss from the same region, suggests an ultra‐deep subduction and exhumation of the South Altyn continental rocks to/from mantle depths in stishovite stability field. Evidence of ultra‐deep subduction of continental materials might be more common and diverse than previous thought. Exhumation of subducted continental rocks from≥300 km has been considered impossible because they are denser than mantle at these depths. How did the stishovite bearing continental rocks of the South Altyn exhumated? As we all know, the densities of stishovite (4.3 g/cm3) are much higher than coesite (2.9 g/cm3), and stishovite transforms into coesite with temperature increases. Density calculations were performed for subducted continental rocks along phase transition of stishovite to coesite, using the third‐order Birch‐Murnaghan equation of state based on mineral fractions obtained from experiments and Perple_X. The results show that the density of Siliceous rocks decrease remarkably, lower than the surrounding mantle in coesite stability field, whereas the density of Oligosiliceous and Silicon unsaturated rocks is higher than surrounding mantle. Thus, we propose that the thermal induced transformation could provide an initial driven force for the exhumation of ultra‐deep subducted silica‐enriched felsic continental rocks. Temperature increase could be derived from an increased geothermal gradient from convective mantle or mantle plume. Mafic to ultra‐mafic rocks and silica‐deficient rocks may be captured by the upwelling subducted continental rocks and exhumated together.  相似文献

In order to constrain the high-pressure behavior of kyanite, multi-anvil experiments have been carried out from 15 to 25 GPa, and 1,350 to 2,500°C. Both forward and reversal approaches to phase equilibria were adopted in these experiments. We find that kyanite breaks down to stishovite + corundum at pressures above ∼15 GPa, and stishovite + corundum should be the stable phase assemblage at the pressure–temperature conditions of the transition zone and the uppermost part of the lower mantle of the Earth, in agreement with previous multi-anvil experimental studies and ab initio calculation results, but in disagreement with some of the diamond-anvil cell experimental studies in the literature. The Al2O3 solubility in nominally dry stishovite has been tightly bracketed by forward and reversal experiments; it is slightly but consistently reduced by pressure increase. Its response to temperature increase, however, is more complicated: increases at low temperatures, maximizes at around 2,000°C, and perhaps decreases at higher temperatures. Consequently, the Al2O3 solubility in dry stishovite at conditions of high temperature–high pressure is very limited.  相似文献

The reaction glaucophane + 2 diopside + 2 quartz = tremolite + 2 albite is proposed to model the transition from the blueschist to greenschist facies. This reaction was investigated experimentally over the range of 1.0–2.1 GPa and 500–800°C using synthetic phases in the chemical system Na2O–CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O. Reversals of this reaction were possible at 500 and 550°C and growth of the low-pressure assemblage at 600°C; however, at temperatures of 600°C and higher and at pressures above 1.6 GPa omphacite nucleation (at the expense of diopside and albite) became quite strong and prevented attaining clear reversals of this reaction. Compositional changes in the amphiboles were determined by both electron microprobe analyses and correlations between unit-cell dimensions and composition. Glaucophane and particularly tremolite showed clear signs of compositional re-equilibration and merged to a single amphibole of winchite composition by about 754°C. These data were used to model the miscibility gap between glaucophane and tremolite using either the asymmetric multicomponent formulism parameters of W TR,GL of 68 kJ with αTR of 1.0 and αGL of 0.75 or a simple two-site asymmetric thermodynamic mixing expression with Margules parameters W NaCa of 13.4 kJ and W CaNa of 19.3 kJ. Combination of these thermodynamic models of the miscibility gap with extant thermodynamic data for the other phases yields a calculated location of the above reaction, involving pure diopside and albite, that is in good agreement with the observed experimental reversals and amphibole compositions over the range of 0.94–1.93 GPa and 400–754°C. The calculated effect of jadeite solid solution into diopside is to reduce the dP/dT slope from 0.0028 to 0.0021 GPa/°C and decrease the pressure by 0.28 GPa at 754°C. The dP/dT slope of this reaction boundary lies close to a linear geotherm of 13°C/km and is consistent with the slopes of other solid–solid reactions that have been used to model the blueschist-to-greenschist facies transition.

Phase relations in the system KAlSi3O8-NaAlSi 3O8 have been examined at pressures of 5–23 GPa and temperatures of 700–1200° C. KAlSi3O8 sanidine first dissociates into a mixture of wadeite-type K2Si4O9, kyanite and coesite at 6–7 GPa, which further recombines into KAlSi3O8 hollandite at 9–10 GPa. In contrast, NaAlSi3O8 hollandite is not stable at 800–1200° C near 23 GPa, where the mixture of jadeite plus stishovite directly changes into the assemblage of calcium ferrite-type NaAlSiO4 plus stishovite. Phase relations in the system KAlSi3O8-NaAlSi3O8 at 1000° C show that NaAlSi3O8 component gradually dissolves into hollandite with increasing pressure. The maximum solubility of NaAlSi3O8 in hollandite at 1000° C was about 40 mol% at 22.5 GPa, above which it decreases with pressure. Unit cell volume of the hollandite solid solution decreases with increasing NaAlSi3O8 component. The hollandite solid solution in this system may be an important candidate as a host mineral of K and Na in the uppermost lower mantle  相似文献

The microtextures of stishovite and coesite in shocked non-porous lithic clasts from suevite of the Ries impact structure were studied in transmitted light and under the scanning electron microscope. Both high-pressure silica phases were identified in situ by laser-Raman spectroscopy. They formed from silica melt as well as by solid-state transformation. In weakly shocked rocks (stage I), fine-grained stishovite (≤1.8 μm) occurs in thin pseudotachylite veins of quartz-rich rocks, where it obviously nucleated from high-pressure frictional melts. Generally no stishovite was found in planar deformation features (PDFs) within grains of rock-forming quartz. The single exception is a highly shocked quartz grain, trapped between a pseudotachylite vein and a large ilmenite grain, in which stishovite occurs within two sets of lamellae. It is assumed that in this case the small stishovite grains formed by the interplay of conductive heating and shock reverberation. In strongly shocked rocks (stages Ib–III, above ∼30 GPa), grains of former quartz typically contain abundant and variably sized stishovite (<6 μm) embedded within a dense amorphous silica phase in the interstices between PDFs. The formation of transparent diaplectic glass in adjacent domains results from the breakdown of stishovite and the transformation of the dense amorphous phase and PDFs to diaplectic glass in the solid state. Coesite formed during unloading occurs in two textural varieties. Granular micrometre-sized coesite occurs embedded in silica melt glass along former fractures and grain boundaries. These former high-pressure melt pockets are surrounded by diaplectic glass or by domains consisting of microcrystalline coesite and earlier formed stishovite. The latter is mostly replaced by amorphous silica.  相似文献

The prograde metamorphic history of the Sulu ultrahigh‐pressure metamorphic terrane has been revealed using Raman‐based barometry of the SiO2 phases and other mineral inclusions in garnet porphyroblasts of a coesite eclogite from Yangzhuang, Junan region, eastern China. Garnet porphyroblasts have inner and outer segments with the boundary being marked by discontinuous changes in the grossular content. In the inner segment, the SiO2 phase inclusions are α‐quartz with no coesite or relict features such as radial cracks. The residual pressures retained by the quartz inclusions systematically increase from the crystal centre to the margin of the inner segment. The metamorphic conditions estimated by calculation from the residual pressure and conventional thermodynamic calculation range from 500 to 630 °C and 1.3 to 2.3 GPa for the stage of the inner segment. Coesite and its pseudomorph occur as inclusions in the outer segment of the garnet and matrix omphacite. This occurrence of coesite is consistent with the pressure and temperature conditions of 660–725 °C and 3.1 GPa estimated by conventional geothermobarometry. Our results suggest that the quartz inclusions in the inner segment were trapped by garnet under α‐quartz‐stable conditions and survived phase transition to coesite at the peak metamorphic stage. The SiO2 phases and other inclusions in the garnet have retained evidence of the pre‐eclogite prograde stage even during exhumation stage. The combined Raman spectroscopic and petrological approaches used here offers a powerful means for obtaining more robust constraints prograde stages involving garnet growth where different SiO2 phases are present as inclusions.  相似文献

In situ X-ray observations of the phase transition from ilmenite to perovskite structure in MnGeO3 were carried out in a Kawai-type high-pressure apparatus interfaced with synchrotron radiation. The phase boundary between the ilmenite and perovskite structures in the temperature range of 700–1,400°C was determined to be P (GPa) = 16.5(±0.6) − 0.0034(±0.0006)T (°C) based on Anderson’s gold pressure scale. The Clapeyron slope, dP/dT, determined in this study is consistent with that for the transition boundary between the ilmenite and the perovskite structure in MgSiO3.  相似文献

Pressure-induced phase transformation of orthoenstatite to clinoenstatite has been studied at 7–10 GPa using a multi-anvil high pressure device with low stress (< 10MPa) conditions. At 1000 °C clinoenstatite was stabilized at pressures above 7.5 GPa. The obtained phase boundary is consistent with natural observations and previous experimental studies performed under quasi-hydrostatic condition, suggesting that clinoenstatite is a stable high pressure phase. Large differences in dP/dT slope between this result and those of earlier studies performed with piston cylinder and belt apparatus may be attributed to large differential stress in the high pressure cells of latter studies. The present study suggests that clinoenstatite can be stabilized by either hydrostatic pressure or differential stress and that the latter tends to shift the transformation boundary defined under hydrostatic condition to lower pressure.  相似文献

Pressure–temperature conditions of tourmaline breakdown in a metapelite were determined by high-pressure experiments at 700–900°C and 4–6 GPa. These experiments produced an eclogite–facies assemblage of garnet, clinopyroxene, phengite, coesite, kyanite and rare rutile. The modal proportions of tourmaline clearly decreased between 4.5 and 5 GPa at 700°C, between 4 and 4.5 GPa at 800°C, and between 800 and 850°C at 4 GPa, with tourmaline that survived the higher temperature conditions appearing corroded and thus metastable. Decreases in the modal abundance of tourmaline are accompanied by decreasing modal abundance of coesite, and increasing that of clinopyroxene, garnet and kyanite; the boron content of phengite increases significantly. These changes suggest that, with increasing pressure and temperature, tourmaline reacts with coesite to produce clinopyroxene, garnet, kyanite, and boron-bearing phengite and fluid. Our results suggest that: (1) tourmaline breakdown occurs at lower pressures and temperatures in SiO2-saturated systems than in SiO2-undersaturated systems. (2) In even cold subduction zones, subducting sediments should release boron-rich fluids by tourmaline breakdown before reaching depths of 150 km, and (3) even after tourmaline breakdown, a significant amount of boron partitioned into phengite could be stored in deeply subducted sediments.  相似文献

Stishovite, a high-pressure SiO2 polymorph in which each Si is coordinated by six O atoms, transforms to an amorphous phase when undergoing heat treatment below the glass transition temperature at ambient pressure. We have applied 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS NMR) to study this amorphization process. We found that the amorphous phase generated after heating stishovite for up to 3 days at around 600 ° C consisted exclusively of four-coordinate Si, similar to glasses quenched from melts at ambient pressure. Furthermore, our data suggest that there are subtle structural differences between the amorphous phase transformed from stishovite at 600 ° C and glasses quenched from melts at ambient pressure: the amorphous phase from stishovite had a smaller mean Si-O-Si angle initially, and it gradually relaxed toward the latter with increasing heating time. There was no detectable change in the stishovite structure even after about 80% of it had been converted to the amorphous phase. The mechanism of the amorphization of stishovite is discussed in light of these results.  相似文献

A series of experiments was conducted on the decomposition of natural and chemically mixed chlorites to examine the stable hydrous phases in the MgO–FeO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (MFASH) system under 5–12 GPa and 700–1100 °C. The upper pressure and temperature limits of the stability region of chlorite are consistent with those observed in previous studies. The hydrous aluminum bearing pyroxene (phase HAPY) and Mg-sursassite (Sur) were observed just above the temperature stability region of chlorite (Chl); clinohumite (cHm) was observed coexisting with phase HAPY at 6 GPa and 800 °C and coexisting with the 23-Å phase at 7 GPa and 800 °C, which may suggest the transportation of water through Chl → (HAPY → cHm) → 23-Å phase along a relatively warm slab. The 23-Å phase has a wider stability region in the pure MASH system (up to 12 GPa and 1100 °C) than it does in the MFASH system (7–10 GPa, up to 1000 °C). The stability of the 23-Å phase beyond the chlorite breakdown pressure indicates that it may play an important role in transporting water into the deep Earth and even into the mantle transition zone.  相似文献

In the North‐East Greenland Caledonides, P–T conditions and textures are consistent with partial melting of ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) eclogite during exhumation. The eclogite contains a peak assemblage of garnet, omphacite, kyanite, coesite, rutile, and clinozoisite; in addition, phengite is inferred to have been present at peak conditions. An isochemical phase equilibrium diagram, along with garnet isopleths, constrains peak P–T conditions to be subsolidus at 3.4 GPa and 940°C. Zr‐in‐rutile thermometry on inclusions in garnet yields values of ~820°C at 3.4 GPa. In the eclogite, plagioclase may exhibit cuspate textures against surrounding omphacite and has low dihedral angles in plagioclase–clinopyroxene–garnet aggregates, features that are consistent with former melt–solid–solid boundaries and crystallized melt pockets. Graphic intergrowths of plagioclase and amphibole are present in the matrix. Small euhedral neoblasts of garnet against plagioclase are interpreted as formed from a peritectic reaction during partial melting. Polymineralic inclusions of albite+K‐feldspar and clinopyroxene+quartz±kyanite±plagioclase in large anhedral garnet display plagioclase cusps pointing into the host, which are interpreted as crystallized melt pockets. These textures, along with the mineral composition, suggest partial melting of the eclogite by reactions involving phengite and, to a large extent, an epidote‐group mineral. Calculated and experimentally determined phase relations from the literature reveal that partial melting occurred on the exhumation path, at pressures below the coesite to quartz transition. A calculated P–T phase diagram for a former melt‐bearing domain shows that the formation of the peritectic garnet rim occurred at 1.4 GPa and 900°C, with an assemblage of clinopyroxene, amphibole, and plagioclase equilibrated at 1.3 GPa and 720°C. Isochemical phase equilibrium modelling of a symplectite of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and amphibole after omphacite, combined with the mineral composition, yields a P–T range at 1.0–1. 6 GPa, 680–1,000°C. The assemblage of amphibole and plagioclase is estimated to reach equilibrium at 717–732°C, calculated by amphibole–plagioclase thermometry for the former melt‐bearing domain and symplectite respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that partial melt formed in the UHP eclogite through breakdown of an epidote‐group mineral with minor involvement of phengite during exhumation from peak pressure; melt was subsequently crystallized on the cooling path.  相似文献

In situ X-ray diffraction experiments at high pressure were carried out up to 8.9 GPa and 1100 °C to study phase transformations of iron and two iron-silicon alloys Fe0.91Si0.09 and Fe0.83Si0.17. For iron, the transformation from the bcc phase to the fcc phase was observed at pressures 3.8–8.2 GPa and temperatures that are consistent with previous in situ X-ray diffraction studies. Reversal of the transformation of iron was found to be sensitive to temperature; hysteresis of the transformation increased from 25 °C at 3.8 GPa to 100 °C at 7.0 GPa, primarily because the bcc-fcc phase boundary has a negative Clayperon slope. In the binary system Fe-Si, the observations of the present study indicate that the ferrite (bcc phase)-stabilizing behavior of silicon persists at high pressures and that the maximum solubility of silicon in the fcc phase increases with increasing pressure: (1) the transformation from the bcc phase to the fcc phase was observed in Fe0.91Si0.09 at 6.0, 7.4 and 8.9 GPa and the temperatures measured at the onset of the transformations were 300 °C higher than those in iron at similar pressures, (2) the transformation rate in Fe0.91Si0.09 was extremely sluggish compared to that of iron, and (3) the bcc-fcc phase transformation was not observed in Fe0.91Si0.09 at 4.7 GPa up to 1000 °C and in Fe0.83Si0.17 at 8.2 GPa and 1100 °C. High Mg-Al spinel-sapphirine granulites, orthopyroxene-bearing quartzofeldspathic granulites, two pyroxene-bearing mafic granulites and metapelitic gneisses are exposed around Paderu, Eastern Ghats Belt. Geothermobarometry in orthopyroxene-bearing quartzofeldspathic granulites and mafic granulites indicate near isobaric cooling through 90°C from ca. 720°C to 630°C, at 8.0 kbar. However, signatures of ultrahigh temperature metamorphism are recorded from the mineralogy and reaction textures in the high Mg-Al granulites. Mineral reactions deduced in this work, when combined with others described by Lalet al (1987) from the same area and plotted in an appropriate petrogenetic grid in the system FMASO indicate an ACW path comprising a high dT/dP prograde arm reaching Pmax − Tmax = 9.5 kbar, ∼ 1000°C, followed by near-isobaric cooling down to 9 kbar, 900°C and subsequent decompressive reworking.  相似文献

The transition between rutile and α-PbO2 structured TiO2 (TiO2II) has been investigated at 700–1,200 °C and 4.2–9.6 GPa. Hydrothermal phase equilibrium experiments were performed in the multi-anvil apparatus to bracket the phase boundary at 700, 1,000, and 1,200 °C. The equilibrium phase boundary is described by the equation: P (GPa)=1.29+0.0065 T ( °C). In addition, growth of TiO2II was observed in experiments at 500 and 600 °C, although growth of rutile was too slow to bracket unambiguously the equilibrium boundary at these temperatures. Water was not detected in either rutile or TiO2II, and dry synthesis experiments at 1,200 °C were consistent with the phase boundary determined in the fluid-bearing experiments, suggesting that the equilibrium is unaffected by the presence of water. Our bracket of the phase boundary at 700 °C is consistent with the reversed, dry experiments of Akaogi et al. (1992) and the reversals of Olsen et al. (1999). The new data suggest that the phase boundary is linear, in agreement with Akaogi et al. (1992), but in striking contrast to the phase diagram inferred by Olsen et al. (1999). The natural occurrence of TiO2II requires formation pressures considerably higher than the graphite–diamond phase boundary.  相似文献

The structural and petrographic studies of the metamorphic rocks of the Schirmacher region, East Antarctica, indicate polyphase metamorphism, dominantly of an early granulite and later amphibolite facies metamorphism. In order to understand the metamorphic evolution of the region, the temperature and pressure of metamorphism has been estimated for felsic gneisses and charnockites using conventional models of geothermometry and geobarometry. The studies showed that, the early granulite facies metamorphism and charnockitization took place around 827±29°C at 7.3±0.3 kbar, while the later amphibolite facies metamorphism and granitization took place around 654±27°C at 5.4±0.4 kbar. The pressure and temperature recorded in these rocks suggest that metamorphism was initiated at 20 to 27 km depth, with a geothermal gradient of around 32°C/km. The P-T conditions reflect isobaric cooling path, with a gentle dP/dT slope (∼10±1 bar/°C). The isobaric cooling path owes its origin to the underplating of crust by mantle derived magmas.  相似文献
