We present a new catalogue of variable stars compiled from the data taken for the University of New South Wales Extrasolar Planet Search. From 2004 October to 2007 May, 25 target fields were each observed for one to four months, resulting in ∼87 000 high-precision light curves with 1600–4400 data points. We have extracted a total of 850 variable light curves, 659 of which do not have a counterpart in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, the New Suspected Variables catalogue or the All Sky Automated Survey southern variable star catalogue. The catalogue is detailed here, and includes 142 Algol-type eclipsing binaries, 23 β Lyrae-type eclipsing binaries, 218 contact eclipsing binaries, 53 RR Lyrae stars, 26 Cepheid stars, 13 rotationally variable active stars, 153 uncategorized pulsating stars with periods <10 d, including δ Scuti stars, and 222 long period variables with variability on time-scales of >10 d. As a general application of variable stars discovered by extrasolar planet transit search projects, we discuss several astrophysical problems which could benefit from carefully selected samples of bright variables. These include (i) the quest for contact binaries with the smallest mass ratio, which could be used to test theories of binary mergers; (ii) detached eclipsing binaries with pre-main-sequence components, which are important test objects for calibrating stellar evolutionary models and (iii) RR Lyrae-type pulsating stars exhibiting the Blazhko effect, which is one of the last great mysteries of pulsating star research.  相似文献

Asteroseismology of pre-main-sequence δ Scuti stars has the potential not only to provide unprecedented constraints on models of these stars, but also to allow for the possibility of detecting evolutionary period changes, thus providing a direct measure of the pre-main-sequence evolutionary time-scale. In the last two years, the published number of such stars known has doubled from four to eight. Searches are now being conducted amongst the Herbig Ae stars, which are considered to be excellent candidates. We announce the discovery of δ Scuti pulsation in one Herbig Ae star, HD 142666, which lies within Marconi & Palla's theoretically predicted instability strip for pre-main-sequence stars, making this the ninth known pre-main-sequence δ Scuti star. We also demonstrate a lack of δ Scuti pulsation in another such star, HD 142527.  相似文献

We undertook a time-series photometric multisite campaign for the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 99563 and also acquired mean light observations over four seasons. The pulsations of the star, which show flatter light maxima than minima, can be described with a frequency quintuplet centred on 1557.653 μHz and some first harmonics of it. The amplitude of the pulsation is modulated with the rotation period of the star that we determine with 2.91179 ± 0.00007 d from the analysis of the stellar pulsation spectrum and of the mean light data. We break up the distorted oscillation mode into its pure spherical harmonic components and find it is dominated by the ℓ= 1 pulsation, and also has a notable ℓ= 3 contribution, with weak ℓ= 0 and 2 components. The geometrical configuration of the star allows us to see both pulsation poles for about the same amount of time; HD 99563 is only the fourth roAp star for which both pulsation poles are seen and only the third where the distortion of the pulsation modes has been modelled. We point out that HD 99563 is very similar to the well-studied roAp star HR 3831. Finally, we note that the visual companion of HD 99563 is located in the δ Scuti instability strip and may thus show pulsation. We show that if the companion was physical, the roAp star would be a 2.03-M, object, seen at a rotational inclination of 44°, which then predicts a magnetic obliquity     .  相似文献

Considering a sample of 20 eclipsing binary systems with δ Scuti type primaries, we discovered that there is a possible relation among the pulsation periods of the primaries and the orbital periods of the systems. According to this empirical relation, the longer the orbital period of a binary, the longer the pulsation period of its pulsating primary. Among the sample, the masses of the secondaries and the separations between the components are known for eight systems for which a  log  P puls  versus log  F (the gravitational pull exerted per gram of the matter on the surface of the primaries by the secondaries) diagram also verifies such an interrelation between the periods. So, as the gravitational force applied by the secondary component onto the pulsating primary increases, its pulsation period decreases. The detailed physics underlying this empirical relation between the periods needs further confirmation, especially theoretically. However, one must also consider the fact that the present sample does not contain a sufficiently large sample of longer period  ( P > 5 d)  binaries.  相似文献

Noisy distance estimates associated with photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts lead to a biased estimate of the luminosity distribution, and produce a correlated misestimate of the sizes. We consider a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 for which both spectroscopic and photometric information is available, and apply the generalization of the V max method to correct for these biases. We show that our technique recovers the true redshift, magnitude and size distributions, as well as the true size–luminosity relation. We find that using only 10 per cent of the spectroscopic information randomly spaced in our catalogue is sufficient for the reconstructions to be accurate within  ∼3 per cent  , when the photometric redshift error is  δ z ≃ 0.038  . We then address the problem of extending our method to deep redshift catalogues, where only photometric information is available. In addition to the specific applications outlined here, our technique impacts a broader range of studies, when at least one distance-dependent quantity is involved. It is particularly relevant for the next generation of surveys, some of which will only have photometric information.  相似文献

We present photometric analysis of 8 short-period eclipsing binaries discovered and observed at Astronomical Observatory at Kolonica Saddle between 2007 and 2010 with different instruments. We determined their orbital periods and performed photometric analysis of their light curves. We found that 3 systems are detached binaries, 4 systems are over-contact binaries of W UMa type and one system is semi-detached with the secondary component filling its Roche lobe. Light curves of 2 systems exhibit asymmetries, explained by spot(s) on the surface of the components.  相似文献

Using our non-local time-dependent theory of convection, the linear non-adiabatic oscillations of 10 evolutionary model series with masses of  1–3 M  are calculated. The results show that there is a red giant instability strip in the lower temperature side of the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram which goes along the sequences of the red giant branch and the asymptotic giant branch. For red giants of lower luminosities, pulsation instability is found at high order overtones; the lower order modes from the fundamental to the second overtone are stable. Towards higher luminosity and lower effective temperature, instability moves to lower order modes, and the amplitude growth rate of oscillations also grows. At the high luminosity end of the strip, the fundamental and the first overtone become unstable, while all the modes above the fourth order become stable. The excitation mechanisms have been studied in detail. It is found that turbulent pressure plays a key role for excitation of red variables. The frozen convection approximation is unavailable for the low temperature stars with extended convective envelopes. In any case, this approximation can explain neither the red edge of the Cepheid instability strip, nor the blue edge of the pulsating red giant instability strip. An analytic expression of a pulsation constant as a function of stellar mass, luminosity and effective temperature is presented from this work.  相似文献

We present a comparison between the published optical, infrared (IR) and CO spectroscopic redshifts of 15 (sub)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts as derived from long-wavelength (radio–mm–far-IR) photometric data. The redshift accuracy measured for 12 submillimetre (submm) galaxies with at least one robustly determined colour in the radio–mm–far-IR regime is  δ z ≈ 0.30 (rms)  . Despite the wide range of spectral energy distributions in the local galaxies that are used in an unbiased manner as templates, this analysis demonstrates that photometric redshifts can be efficiently derived for submm galaxies with a precision of  δ z < 0.5  using only the rest-frame far-IR to radio wavelength data.  相似文献

Time-series photometry of the Hipparcos variable stars HD 199434 and 21190 is reported. Both stars are pulsators of the δ Scuti type. Reclassifications of the MK types of the stars, based on new spectrograms, are given. HD 21190 is found to be F2III SrEuSi:, making it the most evolved Ap star known. Its Strömgren photometric indices support the peculiar spectral type. It is also one of the most evolved δ Scuti stars known. Its combined Ap– δ Scuti nature makes it an important test of models of pulsation in peculiar stars recently developed by Turcotte et al., although it is more extreme than any model they examined. Physical parameters of both stars are estimated from Strömgren and H β photometry, and Hipparcos absolute magnitudes. We attempt mode identifications based on amplitude ratios and phase differences from our photometry. The dominant pulsation of HD 21190 may be an overtone radial mode. The model fits for HD 199434 are even less satisfactory, but favour an ℓ=2 mode. Given the good quality and wavelength coverage of our data, the poor results from the application of the photometric theory of mode identification may call into question the use of that technique.  相似文献

Recent wide field photometric surveys, which target a specific field for long durations, are ideal for studying both long- and short-period stellar variability. Here, we report on 75 variable stars detected during the observations of a field in Pegasus using the Wide Angle Search for Planets Prototype (WASP0) instrument, 73 of which are new discoveries. The variables detected include 16 δ Scuti stars, 34 eclipsing binaries, 3 BY Draconis stars and 4 RR Lyraes. We estimate that the fraction of stars in the field brighter than   V ∼ 13.5  exhibiting variable behaviour with an amplitude greater than 0.6 per cent rms is ∼0.4 per cent. These results are compared with other wide field stellar variability surveys, and implications for detecting transits due to extra-solar planets are discussed.  相似文献

Photoelectric light curves of the double-lined binaries XY Cet and V380 Cyg, known to be detached systems, have been reanalyzed by means of Wood's program in order to obtain homogeneous photometric elements. Masses, radii and luminosities are given.We find that the basic elements of both components of the metallic-line binary XY Cet are consistent with current views of the metallicity phenomenon. The early-type system V380 Cyg turns out to be composed of an evolved (giant) primary and a Main Sequence companion.  相似文献

DG Leo is a spectroscopic triple system composed of three stars of late-A spectral type, one of which was suggested to be a δ Scuti star. Seven nights of observations at high spectral and high time-resolution at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence with the ELODIE spectrograph were used to obtain the component spectra by applying a Fourier transform spectral disentangling technique. Comparing these with synthetic spectra, the stellar fundamental parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, projected rotation velocity and chemical composition) are derived. The inner binary consists of two Am components, at least one of which is not yet rotating synchronously at the orbital period though the orbit is a circular one. The distant third component is confirmed to be a δ Scuti star with normal chemical composition.  相似文献

We analyse 147 h of single-site CCD time series photometry of the multiperiodic low-amplitude δ Scuti star XX Pyx with the aim of investigating variability at low frequencies. Part of the data were obtained in the context of the 1998 multisite campaign on XX Pyx, the results of which were described by Handler et al. We find that periodic low-frequency variations are present in the XX Pyx light curves, and we detect two frequencies at f A=0.8695 cycle d−1 and f B=1.7352 cycle d−1 , respectively, with amplitudes of 4.5 and 5.4 mmag. The low-frequency variability is intrinsic to XX Pyx, and cannot be attributed to instrumental or atmospheric effects. The near 2:1 ratio of the frequencies leads us to suggest that XX Pyx is a δ Scuti star in a binary system, with a possible binary period of 27.6 h. This is strongly supported by the detection of radial velocity variations from the re-analysis of echelle spectra obtained by Handler et al. However, in the absence of a spectroscopic period, alternative explanations of the photometric variability involving pulsation are also possible; the variations occur close to possible combination frequencies of the short-period ( δ Scuti) variations, but high Q values of 0.57 and 0.28 d suggest that the variations are not a result of normal (p-)modes. They could possibly be due to g-modes excited to observable amplitudes as a result of resonance effects. Surface features (spots) are unlikely to be the cause of the variations.
We searched for combination frequencies (  f i − f j ) , f being the normal δ Scuti frequencies detected by Handler et al., but failed to detect any.  相似文献

We present intermediate-resolution spectroscopic data for a set of dwarf and giant galaxies in the Coma cluster, with  −20.6 < MR < −15.7.  The photometric and kinematic properties of the brighter galaxies can be cast in terms of parameters which present little scatter with respect to a set of scaling relations known as the fundamental plane. To determine the form of these fundamental scaling relations at lower luminosities, we have measured velocity dispersions for a sample comprising 69 galaxies on the border of the dwarf and giant regime. Combining these data with our photometric survey, we find a tight correlation of luminosity and velocity dispersion,   L ∝σ2.0  , substantially flatter than the Faber–Jackson relation characterizing giant elliptical galaxies. In addition, the variation of mass-to-light ( M / L ) ratio with velocity dispersion is quite weak in our dwarf sample:   M / L ∝σ0.2.  Our overall results are consistent with theoretical models invoking large-scale mass removal and subsequent structural readjustment, e.g. as a result of galactic winds.  相似文献

The S Scuti star catalogue is used to derive the observational locations of such stars on the HR diagram. The theoretical and observational instability strips are compared to check the theoretical red edge obtained by considering nonlocal time-dependent convection theory. The observational instability strip almost overlaps with the theoretical one, but the observed blue and red envelopes are hotter than the theoretical edges. The distribution of S Scuti stars in the pulsation strip is not uniform.  相似文献

70 new γ Doradus candidates were identified from Hipparcos photometry, which represents more than a doubling of the presently known number. Selecting the objects with good evidence for multiperiodicity, it is found that these stars, together with bona fide members of the class, occupy a well-defined region in a colour–magnitude diagram. This domain corresponds to a range of 7200–7700 K on the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) and 6900–7500 K one magnitude above it, which partly overlaps with the instability strip of δ Scuti stars.
For the first time, γ Doradus stars can be discussed as a group. They can be found over a significant fraction of the main sequence lifetimes for objects in the relevant temperature range. An upper limit on the surface metallicity of γ Doradus stars is apparent, which may guide the search for their pulsation driving mechanism. The importance of possible objects exhibiting both γ Doradus and δ Scuti-type pulsations is discussed.  相似文献

AU Pegasi is a pulsating star in a spectroscopic binary system with an orbital period of 53.26 days. Between 1960 and 1990 an extremely rapid period increase was observed in the value of the pulsation period, but in the last 15 years the observation show that the period set in 2.411 days. Fourier analysis of photometric data obtained during the ASAS project and those taken at the Piszkéstető Mountain Station of the Konkoly Observatory during 1994–2005 indicate that AU Pegasi is pulsating in two modes simultaneously, and the ratio of the frequencies of the two modes is 0.706, a value common for double‐mode classical Cepheids. A careful analysis of other photometric observations obtained during the era of the strong period increase also revealed existence of a second mode. We describe the construction of MegaZ-LRG, a photometric redshift catalogue of over one million luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range  0.4 < z < 0.7  with limiting magnitude   i < 20  . The catalogue is selected from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and Quasar (2SLAQ) spectroscopic redshift catalogue of 13 000 intermediate-redshift LRGs provides a photometric redshift training set, allowing use of ann z, a neural network-based photometric-redshift estimator. The rms photometric redshift accuracy obtained for an evaluation set selected from the 2SLAQ sample is  σ z = 0.049  averaged over all galaxies, and  σ z = 0.040  for a brighter subsample  ( i < 19.0)  . The catalogue is expected to contain ∼5 per cent stellar contamination. The ann z code is used to compute a refined star/galaxy probability based on a range of photometric parameters; this allows the contamination fraction to be reduced to 2 per cent with negligible loss of genuine galaxies. We present a new catalogue, the Imperial IRAS -FSC Redshift Catalogue (IIFSCz), of 60 303 galaxies selected at 60 μm from the IRAS Faint Source Catalogue (FSC). The IIFSCz consists of accurate position, optical, near-infrared and/or radio identifications, spectroscopic redshift (if available) or photometric redshift (if possible), predicted far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre (submm) fluxes ranging from 12 to 1380 μm based upon the best-fitting infrared template. About 55 per cent of the galaxies in the IIFSCz have spectroscopic redshifts, and a further 20 per cent have photometric redshifts obtained through either the training set or the template-fitting method. For S(60) > 0.36 Jy, the 90 per cent completeness limit of the FSC, 90 per cent of the sources have either spectroscopic or photometric redshifts. Scientific applications of the IIFSCz include validation of current and forthcoming infrared and submm/mm surveys such as AKARI , Planck and Herschel , follow-up studies of rare source populations, large-scale structure and galaxy bias, local multiwavelength luminosity functions and source counts. Only a fraction of the theoretically predicted non-radial pulsation modes have so far been observed in δ Scuti stars. Nevertheless, the large number of frequencies detected in recent photometric studies of selected δ Scuti stars allow us to look for regularities in the frequency spacing of modes. Mode identifications are used to interpret these results.
Statistical analyses of several δ Scuti stars (FG Vir, 44 Tau, BL Cam and others) show that the photometrically observed frequencies are not distributed at random, but that the excited non-radial modes cluster around the frequencies of the radial modes over many radial orders.
The observed regularities can be partly explained by modes trapped in the stellar envelope. This mode selection mechanism was proposed by Dziembowski & Królikowska and shown to be efficient for  ℓ= 1  modes. New pulsation model calculations confirm the observed regularities.
We present the s – f diagram, which compares the average separation of the radial frequencies ( s ) with the frequency of the lowest frequency unstable radial mode ( f ). This provides an estimate for the  log  g   value of the observed star, if we assume that the centres of the observed frequency clusters correspond to the radial mode frequencies. This assumption is confirmed by examples of well-studied δ Scuti variables in which radial modes were definitely identified.  相似文献
