Adopting the method of forced oscillation, attenuation was studied in Fontainebleau sandstone (porosity 10%, permeability 10 mD) at seismic frequencies (1–100 Hz). Confining pressures of 5, 10, and 15 MPa were chosen to simulate reservoir conditions. First, the strain effect on attenuation was investigated in the dry sample for 11 different strains across the range 1 × 10?6–8 × 10?6, at the confining pressure of 5 MPa. The comparison showed that a strain of at least 5 × 10?6 is necessary to obtain a good signal to noise ratio. These results also indicate that nonlinear effects are absent for strains up to 8 × 10?6. For all the confining pressures, attenuation in the dry rock was low, while partial (90%) and full (100%) saturation with water yielded a higher magnitude and frequency dependence of attenuation. The observed high and frequency dependent attenuation was interpreted as being caused by squirt flow.  相似文献

Pressure-induced temperature (PIT) variations are systematically observed in the atmosphere of underground cavities. Such PIT variations are due to the compressibility of the air, damped by heat exchange with the rock surface. It is important to characterize such processes for numerous applications, such as the preservation of painted caves or the assessment of the long-term stability of underground laboratories and underground waste repositories. In this paper we thoroughly study the spatiotemporal dependence of the PIT response versus frequency using vertical and horizontal profiles of temperature installed in an abandoned underground quarry located in Vincennes, near Paris. The PIT response varies from about 20 × 10?3°C hPa?1 at a frequency of 2 × 10?4 Hz to 2–3 × 10?3°C hPa?1 at a frequency of one cycle per day. An analytical expression based on a simple heat exchange model accounts for the observed features of the PIT response and allows for correcting the measured time series, having standard deviations of about 10?2°C, to residual variations with a standard deviation of about 2 × 10?3°C. However, a frequency-dependent attenuation of the response, corresponding to a reduction in amplitude with a factor varying from 2 to 3, is observed near the walls. This effect is not included in the simple analytical expression, but it can be accounted for by a one-dimensional differential equation, solved numerically, where temperature variations in the atmosphere are damped by an effective radiative coupling with the rock surface, complemented by a diffusive coupling near the walls. The TIP response is observed to remain stable over several years, but a large transient enhancement of about a factor of two is observed near the roof at one location from July to October 2005. In a cavity located below the Paris Observatory, an additional contribution is identified in the PIT response function versus frequency for frequencies smaller than 2 × 10?5 Hz. This contribution can be described using a modified analytical expression that includes the effect of heat diffusion into the surrounding rock. Using this expression, in this case also, the temperature time series can then be corrected, giving a residual standard deviation smaller than 1.6 × 10?3°C. Transient temporal variations of the PIT response are observed in all sites, with possible nonlinear components in the PIT. Such effects are not properly understood at this stage, and limit the reduction of time series to standard deviations of the order of 2 × 10?3°C, and consequently limit the search for new transient or seasonal temperature signals, for example due to the presence of tiny heat sources in the cavity or to geodynamical effects.  相似文献

In arid environments, thermal oscillations are an important source of rock weathering. Measurements of temperature have been made on the surface of rocks in a desert environment at a sampling interval of 0·375 s, with simultaneous measurements of wind speed, air temperature, and incoming shortwave radiation. Over timescales of hours, the temperature of the rock surface was determined primarily by shortwave radiation and air temperature, while rapid temperature variations, high dT/dt, at intervals of seconds or less, were determined by wind speed. The maximum values of temperature change and time spent above 2°C min?1 increased at high measurement rates and were much higher than previously reported. The maximum recorded value of dT/dt was 137°C min?1 and the average percentage time spent above 2°C min?1 was ~70 ± 13%. Maximum values of dT/dt did not correlate with the maximum values of time spent above 2°C min?1. Simultaneous measurements of two thermocouples 5·5 cm apart on a single rock surface had similar temperature and dT/dt values, but were not correlated at sampling intervals of less than 10 s. It is suggested that this is resulting from rapid fluctuations due to small spatial and timescale wind effects that are averaged out when data is taken at longer sampling intervals, ~10 s or greater. The effect of the amplitude of ultrasonic waves propagating through a sample is not often taken into account in laboratory experiments. However, ultrasonic waves can produce relatively large strain inside the sample, and thus change the properties of the sample. To investigate the effect of strain amplitude on the P-wave velocity, a series of ultrasonic wave propagation experiments were carried out on three different media. All measurements were performed at 1 MHz central frequency and at the strain levels inside propagating waves of  ∼3.0 × 10−6 to 6.0 × 10−5 without applying confining pressure to the sample. Strains in the waves were measured by a laser Doppler interferometer upon wave arrival on a free surface of the sample. The ultrasonic velocities were measured by a pair of P-wave transducers located at the same measuring point as the laser beam of the LDI. The effect of strain on P-wave velocity varied for different material. The P-wave velocity was calculated using both a first arrival and a first maximum peak at different applied voltage. The P-wave velocity remained unchanged for a pure elastic medium (aluminium); however, the velocity increased continuously with the increasing of the strain for polymethylmethacrylate and Gosford sandstone. For Gosford sandstone, velocity increases up to 0.8% with strain increase from 7.0 × 10−6 to 2.0 × 10−5. This effect of velocity increase with the strain induced by an ultrasonic wave can be explained by the in-elasticity of both the polymethylmethacrylate and Gosford sandstone samples.  相似文献

Boreholes present a potential hazard to mining in rock salt mines. The only rock salt mine in England was almost lost when they mined into an unknown borehole open to an aquifer. Rock salt is a good transmitter of VHF radar waves, so a good method of detecting boreholes is by using radar probing. This paper investigates theoretically the detection of a borehole in advance of mining using two different radar systems, Bravo II and Charlie II. Bravo II has a peak power of 20 kW at 230 MHz and Charlie II has 3 W at 440 MHz. The borehole detectability depends critically on the radar wave attenuation in salt, which is characterized by its loss tangent, tan δ. The backscattering cross section σ of the borehole is also important. These parameters are related in the radar signal-to-noise equation which determines the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for a given range in salt to the borehole. Theoretically, in salt with a tan δ of 10-3, Charlie II can detect (S/N= 3 dB) a 12.7 cm borehole 225 m in advance of mining while Bravo II, using only 100 W, can detect the same borehole 680 m ahead. These values are with the antenna E field parallel to the axis of the borehole. Theory shows this antenna orientation to be optimum for maximum detection probability. For salt with a tan δ of 2 × 10-5, the smallest value measured for salt, Bravo II can detect the borehole up to 15.3 km using maximum power of 20 kW.  相似文献

The KLY-4S Kappabridge and KLF-4A Magnetic Susceptibility Meter enable automated measurement of susceptibility variation with field in the ranges of 2–450 A/m and 5–300 A/m (in effective values), respectively. Unfortunately, the measurement accuracy decreases with decreasing field and it is not easy to decide whether the susceptibility variation at the lowest fields is natural phenomenon or results from measuring errors. To overcome this problem, the accuracies of both the above instruments were investigated experimentally using artificial specimens (mixture of pure magnetite and plaster of Paris) with variable susceptibilities ranging from 1 × 10−5 to 5 × 10−2. The complete curve of the field variation of susceptibility of each specimen was measured 10 times and the relative error was calculated for each field. In the KLY-4S Kappabridge, in specimens with susceptibilities higher than 100 × 10−6, the relative errors are lower than 3% in all fields and lower than 1% in the fields stronger than 10 A/m. In the KLF-4A Magnetic Susceptibility Meter, in relatively strongly magnetic specimens with susceptibilities 5 × 10−4 to 5 × 10−2, the relative error is less than 1.5% in the entire field range. While the former instrument is convenient for investigating almost all rock types, the latter instrument is convenient for measuring moderately and strongly magnetic specimens. To facilitate work with field variation of susceptibility curves, showing variable accuracies with field, the programme FieldVar was written. One of its options is plotting the measured data with corresponding field-variable error bars. In this way, a tool is offered for interpreting such susceptibility changes that are sound and reasonable from the point of view of measuring accuracy.  相似文献

Upper Cretaceous volcanic rocks were collected at 24 sites along the Pontides, N-NE Turkey, for rock magnetic and geochemical studies. Rock magnetic and petrographic methods showed that the lavas are characterized predominantly by titanomagnetites with a mixture of pseudo-single and multi-domain grains, whereas in tephrite single domain titanohematite was dominant. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and the geochemical properties on different volcanic rock types provide important knowledge about the magnetic stability of the rocks. The magnetic properties are interpreted in terms of the composition, concentration, magma generation. Tephrite and phonotephrites with the highest intensities (5200 mA/m) and high magnetic susceptibility values (2585 × 10−5), largest grain sizes and Fe/Ti values, showing minor or no alteration are the most magnetic stable samples in contrast to dacites with the lowest intensity-magnetic susceptibility (520 mA/m − 573 × 10−5) and high alteration degree. The basanite samples show very low NRM (48–165 mA/m) but very high magnetic susceptibility (2906–3100 × 10−5) values suggesting the alteration of Fe-Ti minerals. It is shown that the magnetic properties of the basic to acidic rocks show a systematic variation with magma differentiation and could be related to fractional crystallization. Major and trace elements revealed that the lavas are compatible with complex magma evolution, with mineral phases of olivine+magnetite+clinopyroxene in basic series, amphibole+ +clinopyroxene in intermediate rocks and plagioclase+clinopyroxene+biotite in acidic series.  相似文献

The electrical impedance of a sintered forsterite sample containing 1 mol percent SiO2 in excess has been studied as a function of frequency (1–105 Hz) and temperature (400–900°C). The electrical properties are strongly frequency-dependent, requiring both conduction and displacement current for their interpretation. The electrical conductivity is thermally activated with a mean activation energy of 1.15 eV. It is interpreted as being ionic and caused by migration of magnesium ions via a vacancy mechanism. Dielectric data deduced from impedance measurements vary as ωn?1 (0 < n < 1) at constant temperature. The value of n is different below and above a critical frequency ωc, which is thermally activated and interpreted as the jump frequency of the migrating species.  相似文献

There are mainly 3 kinds of existing states of oil generating from source rocks, that is, dispersive liquid hydrocarbon inside of source rock, dispersive liquid hydrocarbon outside of source rock and concentrated liquid hydrocarbon outside of source rock. Because of the differences in thermal history and medium conditions around, and the interaction of organic and inorganic matter, the liquid hydrocarbon with 3 kinds of existing state has different cracking conditions. The gas generation dynamics experiments of crude oil matching different mediums indicate that the distribution of activation energy of methane changes a lot according to medium difference. The carbonate has a main influence on oil cracking conditions and can largely reduce its activation energy, which reflects the lower cracking temperature of crude oil. The mudstone takes a second place and the sandstone is the smallest. The catalytic cracking function to the oil of the carbonate, of the mudstone and of the sandstone changes weaken in turn. The corresponding R o values of main gas generation period in different mediums are as follows: 1.5%–3.8% with pure crude oil, 1.2%–3.2% with dispersive crude oil in carbonate, 1.3%~3.4% with dispersive crude oil in mudstone and 1.4%–3.6% with dispersive crude oil in sandstone. The influence of pressure to crude oil cracking is relatively complicated. In the low heating speed condition, pressure restrains the oil cracking and gas generation, but in the high heating speed condition, pressure has an indistinctive influence to the oil cracking and gas generation. Pressure also makes a different effort in different evolvement stage. Taking the middle and lower Cambrian source rocks in the Tarim Basin as an example, primary oil generating quantity is 2232.24×108t, residual oil and oil cracking gas quantity is 806.21×108t and 106.95×1012m3 respectively.  相似文献

Frequency dependent electrical properties of minerals and partial-melts   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The resistance to current flow of minerals and partial-melts is a frequency dependent electrical property. Measurements of the frequency dependent electrical impedance of single crystal olivine, polycrystalline olivine, dunites, metapelites, and partial-melts, between 10–4 and 105 Hz, when plotted in the complex impedance plane, reveal arcs that correspond to different conduction mechanisms in the material being studied. In polycrystalline materials, two impedance arcs related to material properties (as opposed to electrode properties or electrode-sample interactions) are observed. Each impedance arc is activated over a distinct range of frequency, that is, the mechanisms occur in series. Based on experiments comparing single and polycrystalline impedance spectra, experiments on samples with different electrode configurations, and on samples of varying dimension, the mechanisms responsible for these impedance arcs are interpreted as grain interior conduction ( gi ), grain boundary conduction (in polycrystalline materials; gb ), and sample-electrode interface effects, from highest to lowest frequency, respectively. Impedance spectra of natural dunitic rocks reveal analogous behavior, that is, gb and gi add in series. The grain boundaries do not enhance the conductivity of any of the materials studied (a direct result of the observed series electrical behavior) and, under certain conditions, limit the total conductivity of the grain interior-grain boundary system. By examining the frequency dependence of the electrical properties of partial-melts, it is possible to gain information about microstructure and the distribution of the melt phase and to determine the conditions under which the presence of melt enhances the total conductivity. Impedance spectra of olivine-basalt partial-melts indicate that at least two conduction mechanisms occur in series over the frequency range 10–4-105 Hz, similar to the observed electrical response of melt-absent polycrystalline materials. In a sample containing isolated melt pockets the intermediate frequency grain boundary impedance arc is modified by the presence of melt indicating series conduction behavior. In a sample with an interconnected melt phase the high frequency grain interior impedance arc is modified by the melt phase, indicating the initiation of parallel conduction behavior. Because field EM response versus frequency curves are used to derive conductivity versus depth profiles, it is important to perform laboratory experiments to understand the frequency-dependent electrical behavior of Earth materials. Activation energies determined from studies that measure conductivity at a single frequency may be erroneous because of the shift of the dominant conduction mechanism with frequency as temperature is varied.  相似文献

Abstract

The baseflow characteristics of some of the numerous small basins in southeastern Nigeria have been analysed to estimate the developable groundwater in the basins. It is shown that from 5.62 × 104 to 1.59 × 106 m3 of groundwater can be developed per square kilometre of basin per annum. The relationship between the baseflow characteristics and other attributes of the basins, such as geology and stream density, were studied statistically, leading to the development of empirical equations for predicting the hydrological features of the several ungauged streams in the region. It is shown, for example, that the basin geology (represented as the percentage of sands), the drainage density, the basin area, the baseflow depletion rate and the total groundwater stored in the basin, Qtp, are related by the equation:

Qtp = ?1.85 × 109?7.96 × 108 dd+4.18 × 107 gf?2.01 × 106 df+6.25 × 105 wa

where dd is drainage density; gf geological factor; df depletion factor; and wa basin area.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity of Tibetan eclogite was investigated at pressures of 1.5–3.5 GPa and temperatures of 500–803 K using impedance spectroscopy within a frequency range of 10-1–106 Hz. The electrical conductivity of eclogite increases with increasing temperature(which can be approximated by the Arrhenius equation), and is weakly affected by pressure. At each tested pressure, the electrical conductivity is weakly temperature dependent below ~650 K and more strongly temperature dependent above ~650 K. The calculated activation energies and volumes are 44±1 kJ/mol and-0.6±0.1 cm3/mol for low temperatures and 97±3 kJ/mol and-1.2±0.2 cm3/mol for high temperatures, respectively. When applied to the depth range of 45–100 km in Tibet, the laboratory data give conductivities on the order of 10-1.5–10-4.5 S/m, within the range of geophysical conductivity profiles.  相似文献

The hydraulic properties of aquitards are not easily obtained because monitoring wells are usually installed in aquifers for groundwater resources management. Earthquake‐induced crust stress (strain) triggers groundwater level variations over a short period of time in a large area. These groundwater anomalies can be used to investigate aquifer systems. This study uses a poroelastic model to fit the postseismic variations of groundwater level triggered by the Chi‐Chi earthquake to evaluate the hydraulic properties of aquitards in the Jhoushuei River alluvial fan (JRAF), Taiwan. Six of the adopted eight wells with depths of 70 to 130 m showed good agreement with the recovery theory. The mean hydraulic conductivities (K) of the aquifers for the eight wells are 1.62 × 10?4 to 9.06 × 10?4 m/s, and the thicknesses are 18.8 to 46.1 m. The thicknesses of the aquitards are 11.3 to 42.0 m. Under the isotropic assumption for K, the estimated values of K for the aquitards are 3.0 × 10?8 to 2.1 × 10?6 m/s, corresponding to a silty medium. The results match the values obtained for the geological material of the drilling core and those reported in previous studies. The estimated values were combined with those given in previous studies to determine the distribution of K in the first two aquitards in the JRAF. The distribution patterns of the aquitards reflect the sedimentary environments and fit the geological material. The proposed technique can be used to evaluate the K value of aquitards using inverse methods. The inversion results can be used in hydrogeological analyses, contaminant modeling, and subsidence evaluation.  相似文献

This paper presents a new modelling approach to quantify the hydraulic diffusivity of low-permeability unconsolidated porous media under confined saturated-flow conditions in the laboratory. The derived analytical solution for the transient variation of the hydraulic head after flow interruption was applied to experimental data obtained from continuous measurements of the water pressure at two locations in the soil column. Three soil samples made of a mixture of natural bentonite (at different mass fractions) and medium sand were studied during a series of stepwise constant flow rates of water. The numerical results well fit the experimentally measured decrease of the dimensionless hydraulic head. The study shows that the increase of the mass fraction of bentonite in the soil sample from 10 to 30% is accompanied by a strong decrease of the hydraulic diffusivity from 2.4 × 10−2 to 1.1 × 10−3 m2 s−1, which is clearly due to the decrease of the hydraulic conductivity of the soil sample. The specific storages obtained for each of the three samples are in the same order of magnitude and seem to decrease with the increase of mass fraction of bentonite. However, they clearly reflect the predominant portion of the compressibility of the porous medium compared with that of water. Compared with reported literature values for clayey soils, the specific storage values in this study are slightly higher, varying within the range of 2 × 10−3 to 8.1 × 10−3 m−1.. The experimental results also give insight into the limitations of the modelling approach. In the case of low-permeability soils (K < 2 × 10−6 ms−1) and steady-flow conditions with low Reynolds numbers, for example, Re < 0.003, it is recommended to choose a time duration for flow interruption between subsequent flow rate steps of longer than 5 s. For high-permeability porous media, to increase the precision of the quantified hydraulic diffusivity, it might be useful to select a measuring frequency significantly higher than 1 Hz.  相似文献

Changes in ice-marginal morphology near Leverett glacier, a small outlet glacier at the western margin of the Greenland ice sheet, are determined from a photogrammetrical analysis. To be able to compare two datasets from subsequent years with measurements at different coordinates, kriging was used for interpolation. In this study the kriging standard error is used to evaluate the relative accuracy of the resulting maps. Aerial photographs of 1943, 1968 and 1985 were compared. In the period 1943–1968 an area of 0.2 × 106 m2 was deglaciated. Approximately 1.1 × 10 m3 of material is deposited in this area. The southern part of the deglaciated area is characterized by ice-cored moraines, while moraines without ice core were formed in the north. Differences in depositional products reflect differences in meltwater activity and probably ice-marginal thermal regime. During deglaciation a small proglacial sandur decreased in altitude by 3.2 ± 0.1 m. From the early 1970s Leverett glacier advanced over a previously deglaciated area. During this advance, small ice-marginal accumulations were incorporated and eroded by the advancing glacier. Erosion products were for a substantial part stored in the proglacial sandur. About 1.2 ×105 m2 of the northern part of an ice-cored moraine complex decreased in altitude by −3.6 ± 0.1 m from 1943 to 1968 and over 2.7 × 104 m2 by −2.7 ± 0.1 m during 1968–1985. The spatial patterns of altitude change were analysed in relation to topomorphological parameters as exposition and slope angle and areas occupied by lakes. The estimated energy used to melt the subsurface ice of the ice-cored moraine is 1.4–2.2 W m2 (1943–1968) and 1.0–1.6 W m2 (1968–1985). These values are 30–50 times larger than the geothermal heat flux. For the expected average debris concentration of the ice core (< 10 per cent by volume) the deviation of the surface energy balance forced by climate change will be small and encompass an insignificant part of the total estimated energy used for melting.  相似文献

A whole rock U-Th-Pb study was carried out on eight granites from a suite previously dated at 177 ± 4my(λ = 1.39 × 10?11yr?1) by Rb-Sr methods. A U-Pb isochron was not obtained owing to recent leaching of U in the outcrop. Seven samples gave a Th-Pb isochron with age 184 ± 16my(λ = 4.99 × 10?11yr?1), (20/8Pb204Pb)0 = 39.2 ± 0.2 and MSWD 0.8. The eighth sample fell off the line and was rejected on geological grounds. Dissolving 5 g aliquots of the powdered rock markedly improved the reproducibility of U analyses but analysis of the variances suggests that inhomogeneities still might exist between duplicate dissolutions. Th-Pb geochronology needs further development to bring it to the level of precision of the Rb-Sr method.  相似文献

Malachite green (MG), a traditional agent used in aquaculture although is not approved; its low cost and high efficacy make illicit use likely. We developed a small‐scale, simple, and sensitive dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction procedure for the assay of trace amounts of MG in aquatic environment of Trout fish. Fiber optic‐linear array detection spectrophotometry with charge‐coupled device detector benefiting from a microcell was used for this purpose. The method is based on enhancement effect of an anionic surfactant on the extraction of MG in to very fine multidroplets of microextraction solvent which made assisted by disperser solvent. Under the optimum conditions, the enrichment factor 77.5 was obtained from a 5‐mL water sample. The calibration graph was linear up to 5 × 10?7 mol L?1 with detection limit of 1 × 10?8 mol L?1. The relative standard deviation for seven replicate measurements of 4 × 10?7 and 5 × 10?8 mol L?1 of MG were 3.3 and 4.5%, respectively.  相似文献

The simultaneous transfer of pore fluid and vapour was studied in the unsaturated shallow subsurface of a Plio-Pleistocene marine mudstone badland slope in southwestern Taiwan during the dry season using field monitoring data and numerical simulations. Data from field monitoring show mass-basis water contents of ~0.05 to ~0.10 that decrease towards the unsaturated ground surface and were invariant during the middle part of the dry season, except for daily fluctuations. In addition, the observed daily fluctuations in water content correlate with fluctuations in bedrock temperature, especially at depths of 2.5–5.0 cm. Periodic increases in water content occurred most notably during the day, when the bedrock temperature showed the greatest increase. Water contents then decreased to the previous state as bedrock temperature decreased during the night. Calculated vapour fluxes within the mudstone during the day increased up to 6 × 10−6–1 × 10−5 kg m−2 s−1, deriving a 0.01–0.02 increase in mass-basis water content at 2.5 cm depth for a 12-h period. This agrees with field monitoring data, suggesting that increases in water content occurred due to vapour intrusions into the bedrock. Pore water electrical conductivity (EC) showed periodic variations due to vapour intrusion, and gradually increased between the ground surface and depths of 2.5–5.0 cm. In contrast, pore water EC gradually decreased between 15 and 40 cm depth. Calculated water fluxes at depths of 2.5–40.0 cm varied from −4 × 10−6 to −2 × 10−9 kg m−2 s−1. These fluxes generated an increase in solute concentrations at the ground surface, with negative values of water flux indicating an upwards movement of water towards the surface. We show that the increase in solute content due to solute transfer from depth is highly dependent on variations in water flux with depth. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
