The compositions of fluvial sands collected in mountainous regions along the volcanic front in Central America and along the Andean front in Venezuela and Colombia correlate with the tectonic setting of their source terrains. The sands derived from the Central American volcanic arc are compositionally distinct from those derived from the Andean terrains, and minor variations in tectonic style can also be discriminated. Subtle differences in tectonic setting and source rock composition are recognizable only when modification by chemical weathering is slight; they are strongest in sands from low-order streams draining mountainous areas with modest alluvial-plain development. Sands that have been exposed to weathering for extended periods during alluvial storage are progressively enriched in chemically stable phases. With increased weathering, sands from continental terrains converge toward a supermature quartz arenite end member, and the imprint left by source rock composition and tectonic setting is obscured. In intraoceanic terrains, a similar but much less pronounced enrichment in stable phases relative to less-stable phases is observed, similarly overprinting the tectonic signal. Although detailed tectonic information is easily lost, sands derived from intraoceanic terrains are distinguishable from those derived from continental terrains even after long exposure to intense chemical-weathering conditions.  相似文献

The Devonian-Carboniferous contact in southern South America, characterized by a sharp unconformity, has been related to the Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous Eo-Hercynian orogeny. The Calingasta-Uspallata basin of western Argentina and the Sauce-Grande basin (Ventana Foldbelt) of eastern Argentina have been selected to characterize this unconformity. The Eo-Hercynian movements were accompanied in western Argentina by igneous activity related to a Late Devonian—Early Carboniferous magmatic arc mainly exposed today along the Andean Cordillera. This magmatic activity is partly reflected also in eastern Argentina (Ventana Foldbelt), where isotopic dates suggest a thermal event also related to the intrusions present to the west in the North Patagonian Massif and Sierras Pampeanas. The scarcity of Lower Carboniferous deposits in the stratigraphic record of southern South America suggests that the Early Carboniferous was a time interval dominated by uplift and erosion followed by widespread subsidence during the Middle and Late Carboniferous. The origin of the Eo-Hercynian orogeny can be linked with the convergence between the Arequipa Massif, and its southern extension, and the South American continent. Its effects are best represented along the Palaeo-Pacific margin, although distant effects are discernible in the cratonic areas of eastern South America. Correspondence to: O. R. Microprobe analysis of plagioclase in deep-sea sands from various tectonic settings gives averages ranging from 19% An for trailing-edge continental margins to 56% An for basins on the ocean side of an island arc. For each setting except island arcs, anomalously high amounts of pure albite are found. These albitic grains may be recycled from pre-existing sedimentary rocks. Potassium-rich plagioclase, thought to be indicative of a volcanic provenance, is less abundant than would be expected from the proportion of volcanic rock fragments. Perhaps such high-K plagioclases are less resistant to weathering than low-K plagioclase.  相似文献

During the Cambrian, two types of continental margins occurred around Gondwana. The eastern margin (Antarctica, Australia and southern South America) was characterized by a narrow continental shelf with a steep slope separating the shallow water environment from a deep-oceanic one accompanied by mafidultramafic volcanics. The western margin was characterized by a wider continental shelf, probably passing gradually to an unknown outer basin. This comprised three main domains: the Asiatic shelf, composed of distinct cratonic blocks, presumably separated from each other by deeper-water/ volcanic intracontinental basins; the European shelf, characterized by the development of shallow intracontinental siliciclastic basins; and the Americanc-African shelf, morphologically and depositionally uniform. The distinction of these two Gondwana continental margins expresses their different geodynamic behaviour during Cambrian extensional tectonics. In fact, the sedimentary/palaeogeographic evolution, suggests the establishment of an active Pacific-like margin in the eastern domain, and the tentative establishment of a divergent Atlantic-like margin, in the westem one.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Weathering simulations carried out using a climatic cabinet have demonstrated that diurnal temperature and humidity variations typical of those occurring in warm desert environments are ineffective in causing static breakage of quartz dune sand and polymineralic regolith sand grains. Wetting and drying combined with temperature variations was also found to be a relatively ineffective weathering process. These results suggest that 'crack tip' processes are insignificant where mineral grains are not subject to static loading. Sodium sulphate weathering was found to cause slight damage to quartz dune sand grains and major damage to first cycle regolith grains. Feldspars and mica in the regolith sands were more susceptible to salt action than quartz. Salt weathering of the regolith sands produced substantial quantities of silt in the size range typically found in natural loess deposits.  相似文献

南美洲铁矿资源丰富、分布广泛、矿床规模大、矿石品位高、类型较齐全。从南美洲大地构造格架分析,分布在克拉通地盾区或其边缘的沉积-变质型铁矿和分布在安第斯海岸造山带的火山成因型铁矿最为重要,沉积-变质型铁矿主要形成于太古宙—元古宙,火山成因型铁矿主要形成于中新生代。综合研究分析,圈出10个铁矿重要成矿区带,主要分布在委内瑞拉的玻利瓦尔州,巴西的阿马帕州、帕拉州、米纳斯吉拉斯州、北里奥格兰德州、巴拉伊巴州、巴伊亚州、南马托格罗索州,玻利维亚的圣克鲁斯州,秘鲁的伊卡—阿雷基帕海岸带和智利的卡拉马—圣地亚哥海岸带等。通过对重要成矿区带内典型矿床的剖析,并采用统计分析方法总结南美洲铁矿成矿时空分布规律,为未来在该区寻找更多的铁矿资源提供参考。  相似文献

利用中国地震台网和ISC台站记录的P波到时数据,采用球坐标系有限差分地震层析成像方法反演了南海东北部及其邻近地区壳幔三维P波速度结构,并分析了不同地质单元的构造差异及其深部特征。结果表明:南海东北部表现出陆架地区的岩石层特性,属于华南大陆向海区的延伸,岩石层厚度较大,现今不存在大规模的地幔热流活动,推测大陆边缘张裂作用仅限于地壳内部而没有延伸进入上地幔,具有非火山型大陆边缘的深部特点。中央海盆附近上地幔P波速度明显降低,与海盆下方地幔热流活动密切相关。不同的速度异常特征表明:华南大陆暨台湾地区属于欧亚大陆的正常地壳或是与菲律宾海板块相互作用产生的增厚型地壳,冲绳海槽则是弧后扩张产生的减薄型地壳。滨海断裂带作为华南大陆高速异常和南海北部高速异常的分界,代表了一定地质时期华南地块和南海地块的拼合边界。断裂附近的上地幔低速异常揭示了闽粤沿海岩浆作用的深层动力机制。吕宋岛弧、马尼拉海沟、东吕宋海槽的速度异常与其所处的特殊构造位置有密切的关系,清晰地反映出岛弧俯冲带的地壳结构差异;台湾南部至吕宋岛弧的上地幔低速异常揭示了两个重要火山链的深部构造特征,北吕宋海脊下方100 km深度的条带状高速异常有可能代表了俯冲下沉的岩石层板片。  相似文献

Sediments cored from the Romanche Deep in the Atlantic Ocean consist of globigerina mud containing foraminifer fragments; red clay with interbedded sand lenses; sands composed of plagioclase, pyroxene, quartz, serpentine, olivine, chlorite, and other minerals; and a "detrital globigerina ooze." Mineralogic and paleontologic examination indicate that the need for a continental source and extended horizontal transportation in suspension streams may be exaggerated. Although the theory that these deep-sea sands are products of continental weathering deposited in the deep after some thousands of kilometers of horizontal transportation and that suspension streams play an important role as the agent of transportation, redeposition, and configuration of the deep-sea sediments, it is possible that the sands in the Romanche Deep were derived, at least in part, from the Middle Atlantic Ridge. Therefore, deep-sea sands can provide valuable information on the composition of the submarine ridge and the mechanism of tectonic movement. --G. E. Denegar.  相似文献

Sand samples from piston cores taken in the Peru-Chile Trench and adjacent areas were examined petrographically in an attempt to characterize sands from the oceanward side of a continent-margin volcanic arc. Framework composition averaged Q18F44L38, close to the average reported for this type of setting, but showed wide variation in the ratio of feldspar to lithic fragments; quartz was uniformly low, less than 30%. Samples rich in lithic grains were from sites that lie off areas of recent volcanism on the adjacent continent. Samples from off southern Central America had compositions more like those found in island-arc settings, averaging Q3F21L76, whereas those from the Straits of Magellan increased in quartz and decreased in lithic fragments toward the Atlantic. Plagioclase was greatly predominant over K-feldspar in all samples, and averaged An28. A considerable portion of the plagioclase was close to end-member albite, suggesting recycling from pre-existing sedimentary rocks. Climate had no obvious effect on the framework proportions or the feldspar composition, but the volume of sediment in the trench increases with increasing rainfall on the continent.  相似文献

Volcanic areas play a key role in the input of elements into the ocean and in the regulation of the geological carbon cycle. The aim of this study is to investigate the budget of silicate weathering in an active volcanic area. We compared the fluxes of the two major weathering regimes occurring at low temperature in soils and at high temperature in the active volcanic arc of Kamchatka, respectively. The volcanic activity, by inducing geothermal circulation and releasing gases to the surface, produces extreme conditions in which intense water-rock interactions occur and may have a strong impact on the weathering budgets. Our results show that the chemical composition of the Kamchatka river water is controlled by surface low-temperature weathering, atmospheric input and, in some limited cases, strongly imprinted by high-temperature water-rock reactions. We have determined the contribution of each source and calculated the rates of CO2 consumption and chemical weathering resulting from low and high-temperature water/rock interactions. The weathering rates (between 7 and 13.7 t/km2/yr for cations only) and atmospheric CO2 consumption rates (∼0.33-0.46 × 106 mol/km2/yr for Kamchatka River) due to rock weathering in soils (low-temperature) are entirely consistent with the previously published global weathering laws relating weathering rates of basalts with runoff and temperature. In the Kamchatka River, CO2 consumption derived from hydrothermal activity represents about 11% of the total HCO3 flux exported by the river. The high-temperature weathering process explains 25% of the total cationic weathering rate in the Kamchatka River. Although in the rivers non-affected by hydrothermal activity, the main weathering agent is carbonic acid (reflected in the abundance of in rivers), in the region most impacted by hydrothermalism, the protons responsible for minerals dissolution are provided not only by carbonic acid, but also by sulphuric and hydrochloric acid. A clear increase of weathering rates in rivers impacted by sulphuric acid can be observed. In the Kamchatka River, 19% of cations are released by hydrothermal acids or the oxidative weathering of sulphur minerals.Our results emphasise the important impact of both low and high-temperature weathering of volcanic rocks on global weathering fluxes to the ocean. Our results also show that besides carbonic acid derived from atmospheric CO2, hydrochloric acid and especially sulphuric acid are important weathering agents. Clearly, sulphuric acid, with hydrothermal activity, are key parameters that cause first-order increases of the chemical weathering rates in volcanic areas. In these areas, accurate determination of weathering budgets in volcanic area will require to better quantify sulphuric acid impact.  相似文献

Hf‐isotope data of >1100 detrital zircon grains from the Palaeozoic, south‐central Andean Gondwana margin record the complete crustal evolution of South America, which was the predominant source. The oldest grains, with crustal residence ages of 3.8–4.0 Ga, are consistent with complete recycling of existing continental crust around 4 Ga. We confirm three major Archaean, Palaeoproterozoic (Transamazonian) and late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic crust‐addition phases as well as six igneous phases during Proterozoic to Palaeozoic time involving mixing of juvenile and crustally reworked material. A late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic, Grenville‐age igneous belt can be postulated along the palaeo‐margin of South America. This belt was the basement for later magmatic arcs and accreted allochthonous microcontinents as recorded by similar crustal residence ages. Crustal reworking likely dominated over juvenile addition during the Palaeozoic era, and Proterozoic and Archaean zircon was mainly crustally reworked from the eroding, thickened Ordovician Famatinian arc.  相似文献

The SE margin of the Yangtze Block, South China is composed of the Mesoproterozoic Lengjiaxi Group and the Neoproterozoic Banxi Group, with Sinian- and post-Sinian-cover. A geochemical study was undertaken on the Mesoproterozoic–Neoproterozoic clastic sediments in order to delineate the characteristics of the sediment source and to constrain the tectonic development and crustal evolution of South China.Our results show that the Mesoproterozoic clastic sediments have a dominant component derived from a metavolcanic-plutonic terrane, with a large of mafic component. There is a minor contribution of mafic rocks and older upper crustal rocks to the provenance. Strong chemical weathering in the source area occurred before transport and deposition. The provenance for the Neoproterozoic clastic sediments was most likely old upper continental crust composed of tonalite–granodiorite-dominated, tonalite–granodiorite–granite source rocks, which had undergone strong weathering and/or recycling. A minor component of older K-rich granitic plutonic rocks and younger volcanogenic bimodal rocks is also indicated.Based on the regional geology, the geochemical data and the inferred provenance, the Mesoproterozoic Group is interpreted as a successive sedimentary sequence, deposited in an extensional/rifting back-arc basin, adjacent to a >1.80 Ga continental margin arc-terrane. The progressive extension/rifting of the back-arc basin was followed by increasing subsidence and regional uplift during continental marginal arc-continent (the Cathaysian Block) collision at 1.0 Ga caused the deposition of the Neoproterozoic Group into back-arc to retro-arc foreland basin. Therefore, the depositional setting of the Proterozoic clastic sediments and associated volcanic rocks within the back-arc basin reflected basin development from an active continental margin (back-arc basin), with extension or rifting of the back-arc basin, to a passive continental margin.  相似文献

Recent evidence indicates that beneath the Caribbean a tongue of sublithosphere mantle is flowing from the Pacific to the Atlantic, dragging the overlying lithosphere eastward: (i) Shear-wave splitting results from beneath the Andean subduction zone and Venezuela suggest mantle flow eastward through the Caribbean. (ii) Volcanic chemistry in Central America indicates a slab source beneath Nicaragua, but a different source in Costa Rica, above the proposed Pacific outflow. (iii) An extinct volcanic arc accreted to the margins of the Caribbean swept eastward through the Caribbean gap between North & South America. The 1982 'continental undertow' model requires shallow-mantle flow through the Caribbean gap from the Pacific to the Atlantic, if continents have deep roots and if shallow-mantle flow beneath oceans is decoupled from convection at deeper levels. The new evidence from the Caribbean is thus compatible with the continental undertow model, and perhaps with other models involving decoupled shallow flow.  相似文献

The sources of volcanic temper sands in prehistoric pottery found on low-lying raised-coral islands of Tonga have long been uncertain. The paucity of noncalcareous sand on most inhabited Tongan islands has led to the suggestion that temper was imported from the active magmatic are to the west, or even that most pottery was imported to Tonga from Fiji. The simple mineralogy of the tempers, which are composed almost exclusively of pyroxene and plagioclase mineral grains, volcanic rock fragments, and opaque ferro-magnesian oxide grains, is compatible with derivation from Tongan volcanics, but island volcanoes of Tonga lack deposits of rounded and well-sorted sands that are similar texturally to the tempers. Discovery of local placer deposits composed of volcanic sand on beaches otherwise composed of calcareous reef detritus within the Ha'apai Group of central Tonga provides a satisfactory local source for temper on the shorelines of several inhabited islands. The beach placer sands were apparently derived from reworking of thick tephra deposits that mantle the islands. Detailed compositional analysis of temper sands in numerous ancient Lapitoid potsherds from all the constituent island groups of Tonga implies that pottery making was once a widespread industry making use of locally available raw materials. Stylistically diagnostic protohistoric Fijian potsherds, found in small numbers on several islands in Tonga, can be distinguished from the older indigenous Lapitoid wares by their anomalous tempers, which contrast sharply with the Tongan volcanic temper sands. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Lake sediments from a closed basin in southern Patagonia (Argentina) provide a continental archive with which to reconstruct climate change and to test the interhemispheric synchroneity of abrupt events. High-resolution sub-bottom seismic profiles of Lago Cardiel indicate substantial lake-level changes since the late Pleistocene, which were identified and dated in a series of long piston cores. These data allow the reconstruction of the regional water balance at 49=" PSFT − BC "202S since the late glacial. The seismic stratigraphy reveals a dry late glacial climate with a desiccation of the basin around 11 220 yr BP (14C). Lake level rapidly increased by 135 m at the Holocene transition. Following the early Holocene highstand at + 55 m, lake level never dropped significantly below modern level. The palaeoclimate changes implied by the Lago Cardiel record are out-of-phase with those implied by records from tropical South America and demonstrate considerable latitudinal asynchroneity in the climate evolution of this continent.  相似文献

The purpose of this contribution is to describe the sequence of physical and chemical processes resulting in the sediment-type named loess, a fine-grained sediment deposit of universal occurrence. Owing to historical causes, loess has been (and still is) implicitly linked to glacial/periglacial environments among most naturalists. However it is known today that most eolian dust is deflated from tropical deserts. Hence, that sequence of processes is more comprehensive than the former narrow cold scenario. Six examples of different “non-classical” cases (from South America and Europe) that fit well to the loess definition are developed: 1) volcanic loess in Ecuador: pyroclastic eruptions/valley wind/mountain praire/silica structuring; 2) tropical loess in northeastern Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay: deflation of river and fan splays/savanna/iron sesquioxide structuring; 3) gypsum loess in northern Spain: destruction of anhydrite/gypsiferous layers in a dry climate/valley wind/Saharian shrub peridesert/gypsum structuring; 4) trade-wind deposits in Venezuela and Brazil: deflation in tidal flats/trade wind into the continent/savanna/iron hydroxide structuring; 5) anticyclonic gray loess in Argentina: continental anticyclone on plains/anti-clockwise winds and whirls/steppe/carbonate structuring. All these non-classical types conform to the accepted loess definitions and they also share the most important field characteristics of loess such as grain size, friability, vertical or sub-vertical slopes in outcrops, subfusion and others. Other cases can probably be recognized when systematically scrutinized.  相似文献

Metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary rocks accreted to the northern South American continental margin are major vestiges of the Caribbean oceanic plate evolution and its interactions with the continent. Selected whole rock geochemistry, Nd–Sr isotopes and detrital zircon geochronology were obtained in metabasic and metasedimentary rocks from the Santa Marta and San Lorenzo Schists in northernmost Colombia. Trace element patterns are characterized by primitive island arc and MORB signatures. Similarly initial 87Sr/86Sr-εNd isotopic relations correlate with oceanic arcs and MORB reservoirs, suggesting that the protoliths were formed within a back-arc setting or at the transition between the inta-oceanic arc and the Caribbean oceanic crust. Trace element trends from associated metasedimentary rocks show that the provenance was controlled by a volcanic arc and a sialic continental domain, whereas detrital U/Pb zircons from the Santa Marta Schists and adjacent southeastern metamorphic units show Late Cretaceous and older Mesozoic, Late Paleozoic and Mesoproterozoic sources. Comparison with continental inland basins suggests that this arc-basin is allocthonous to its current position, and was still active by ca. 82 Ma. The geological features are comparable to other arc remnants found in northeastern Colombia and the Netherland Antilles. The geochemical and U/Pb detrital signatures from the metasedimentary rocks suggest that this tectonic domain was already in proximity to the continental margin, in a configuration similar to the modern Antilles or the Kermadec arc in the Pacific. The older continental detritus were derived from the ongoing Andean uplift feeding the intra-oceanic tectonic environment. Cross-cutting relations with granitoids and metamorphic ages suggest that metamorphism was completed by ca. 65 Ma.  相似文献
