The rates of rotational transitions for HCO+, the most abundant ion in interstellar space, induced by collision with helium are obtained for temperatures ranging from 10 to 80 K. The calculations are based on a new potential energy surface for the He–HCO+ interaction and on a scattering matrix whose accuracy was checked by pressure broadening and shift measurements. The rates     decrease for increasing values of j and  Δ j   , with a temperature trend depending on the energy involved in the transitions: if it is small, the rates are almost constant, while an increase with T is found for other cases. Comparison with previous and less accurate results shows an agreement within 50 per cent. Comparison between state-to-state and pressure broadening cross-sections allows us to discuss importance and influence of elastic and inelastic collisions.  相似文献

In a previous paper by the present authors the theory of Anstee and O'Mara for the broadening of spectral lines of neutral atoms by collisions with hydrogen atoms was extended to singly ionized atoms. In this paper we apply the method to the resonance and triplet lines of ionized strontium, the infrared triplet of ionized barium, and the resonance lines of ionized beryllium. Analysis of five lines of ionized strontium, previously regarded as too strong for an abundance analysis, and two lines of neutral strontium results in a solar abundance of strontium of log( N Sr N H)+12=2.92±0.05, which is entirely consistent with the meteoritic value.  相似文献

The [C  ii ]  158-μm  line is an important emission-line diagnostic in photodissociation regions (PDRs), but this emission line can also emerge from ionized gas. This work calculates the contribution of [C  ii ] emission from ionized gas over a wide range of parameter space by considering the simplified case of an H+ region and PDR in pressure equilibrium. Additionally, these calculations also predict the strong correlation observed between [N  ii ]  205-μm  emission and [C  ii ] discussed by previous authors. Overall, the results of these calculations have wide-ranging applications to the interpretation of [C  ii ] emission in astrophysical environments.  相似文献

The theory of Anstee & O'Mara for the broadening of spectral lines owing to collisions by neutral hydrogen atoms is extended to d–f and f–d transitions of neutral atoms. Width cross-sections are tabulated against effective principal quantum numbers for the upper and lower states of the transition, for a relative collision velocity of 104 m s−1. The cross-sections are fitted to a variation with velocity of v −α, and results for the velocity parameter α are similarly tabulated. The data are tested by application to d–f spectral lines in the solar spectrum. The derived abundances are consistent with those for meteorites.  相似文献

A model is constructed of the material in front of the star Cygnus OB2 no. 12 in which dense cores are embedded in diffuse clumps of gas. The model reproduces the measured abundances of C2 and CO, and predicts a column density of 91010 cm2 for HCO+.  相似文献

Molecular R-matrix calculations are performed at a range of energies to give rotational and vibrational excitation and de-excitation cross-sections and, hence, rates for electron collisions with HeH+ up to electron temperatures of 20 000 K. Critical electron densities are also given. The rotational calculations include the Coulomb–Born completion of the cross-sections for high l values. Rates for the transition j  = 0 → 2, which have previously been assumed to be negligible, are found to be up to half those for j  = 0 → 1, raising the prospect of observing the HeH+ j  = 2 → 1 emission line at 74.8 μm.  相似文献

The identity of the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is one of the most fascinating puzzles of modern spectroscopy. Over the last few years the number of known DIBs has grown substantially. In this paper we discuss the two recently discovered near-infrared weak interstellar features which have already been proposed as fingerprints of the buckminsterfullerene We present and discuss measurements of the two related DIBs within a larger sample of reddened targets, observed with different spectrometers, telescopes and site conditions. We provide additional arguments in favour of the interstellar origin of the two bands. We find evidence around the 9577-Å DIB of far-wing structures, which may affect broad-band measurements. We estimate corrections and errors for telluric and stellar blends, and show that the cores of the two DIBs are well correlated with a ratio near unity within 20 per cent. Finally, we discuss their relation to the laboratory spectra of and the search for two expected weaker transitions.  相似文献

We suggest a new way to establish the relation between the electron temperature t 3 within the [O  iii ] zone and the electron temperature t 2 within the [O  ii ] zone in high-metallicity  (12 + log(O/H) > 8.25)  H  ii regions. The   t 2– t 3  diagram is constructed by applying our method to a sample of 372 H  ii regions. We find that the correlation between t 2 and t 3 is tight and can be approximated by a linear expression. The new   t 2– t 3  relation can be used to determine t 2 and accurate abundances in high-metallicity H  ii regions with a measured t 3. It can also be used in conjunction with the ff relation for the determination of t 3 and t 2 and oxygen abundances in high-metallicity H  ii regions, where the [O  iii ]λ4363 auroral line is not detected. The derived   t 2– t 3  relation is independent of photoionization models of H  ii regions.  相似文献

We present ultra-high-resolution (0.35 km s−1 FWHM) observations of the interstellar Ca K line towards seven nearby stars. The spectral resolution was sufficient to resolve the line profiles fully, thereby enabling us to detect hitherto unresolved velocity components, and to obtain accurate measurements of the velocity dispersions ( b values). Absorption components with velocities similar to those expected for the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC) and the closely associated 'G cloud' were identified towards six of the seven stars. However, in most cases the b values deduced for these components were significantly larger than the b  ≈ 2.2 km s−1 (i.e. T k ≈ 7000 K, v t ≈ 1 km s−1) expected for the LIC, and it is argued that this results from the presence of additional, spectrally unresolved, components having similar velocities and physical conditions. For two stars (δ Vel and α Pav) we detect interstellar components with much smaller b values (1.1 ± 0.3 and 0.8 ± 0.1 km s−1, respectively) than are expected for low-density clouds within the Local Bubble. In the case of the narrow α Pav component, we also find an anomalously large Na  i /Ca  ii column density ratio, which is indicative of a relatively high density. Thus it is possible that, in addition to LIC-type clouds, the local interstellar medium contains a population of previously undetected cooler and denser interstellar clouds.  相似文献

HCO+ has been detected for the first time towards the star Cygnus OB2 No. 12 through emission of the 1–0 rotational transition at 89 GHz. The CO( J =2−1) transition has also been observed. The observations are consistent with a model of dense regions embedded in a low-density clump gas. If actually present, the dense component would have an aggregate size L 1300 au, in agreement with estimates of small-scale density fluctuations observed along diffuse lines of sight.  相似文献

Anomalous molecular line profile shapes are the strongest indicators of the presence of the infall of gas that is associated with star formation. Such profiles are seen for well-known tracers, such as HCO+, CS and H2CO. In certain cases, optically thick emission lines with appropriate excitation criteria may possess the asymmetric double-peaked profiles that are characteristic of infall. However, recent interpretations of the HCO+ infall profile observed towards the protostellar infall candidate B335 have revealed a significant discrepancy between the inferred overall column density of the molecule and that which is predicted by standard dark cloud chemical modelling.
This paper presents a model for the source of the HCO+ emission excess. Observations have shown that, in low-mass star-forming regions, the collapse process is invariably accompanied by the presence of collimated outflows; we therefore propose the presence of an interface region around the outflow in which the chemistry is enriched by the action of jets. This hypothesis suggests that the line profiles of HCO+, as well as other molecular species, may require a more complex interpretation than can be provided by simple, chemically quiescent, spherically symmetric infall models.
The enhancement of HCO+ depends primarily on the presence of a shock-generated radiation field in the interface. Plausible estimates of the radiation intensity imply molecular abundances that are consistent with those observed. Further, high-resolution observations of an infall-outflow source show HCO+ emission morphology that is consistent with that predicted by this model.  相似文献

We have carried out a systematic search for the molecular ion CO+ in a sample of eight protoplanetary and planetary nebulae in order to determine the origin of the unexpectedly strong HCO+ emission previously detected in these sources. An understanding of the HCO+ chemistry may provide direct clues for the physical and chemical evolution of planetary nebulae. We find that the integrated intensity of the CO+ line may be correlated with that of HCO+, suggesting that the reaction of CO+ with molecular hydrogen may be an important formation route for HCO+ in these planetary nebulae.  相似文献

In wind-fed X-ray binaries the accreting matter is Compton-cooled and falls freely on to the compact object. The matter has a modest angular momentum l and accretion is quasi-spherical at large distances from the compact object. Initially small non-radial velocities grow in the converging supersonic flow and become substantial in the vicinity of the accretor. The streamlines with l >( GMR ∗)1/2 (where M and R ∗ are the mass and radius of the compact object) intersect outside R ∗ and form a two-dimensional caustic which emits X-rays. The streamlines with low angular momentum, l <( GMR ∗)1/2, run into the accretor. If the accretor is a neutron star, a large X-ray luminosity results. We show that the distribution of accretion rate/luminosity over the star surface is sensitive to the angular momentum distribution of the accreting matter. The apparent luminosity depends on the side from which the star is observed and can change periodically with the orbital phase of the binary. The accretor then appears as a 'Moon-like' X-ray source.  相似文献

We present rate coefficients for rotational transitions induced in collisions between H2 molecules. Rotational levels J  ≤ 8 and kinetic temperatures T  ≤ 1000 K are considered. The interaction potential computed by Schwenke has been used, together with the quantal coupled channels method of calculating the cross-sections. The ab initio R -matrix method is used to calculate effective collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of the sulphur-like ion Cl  ii in the close-coupling approximation. All 10 astrophysically important fine-structure forbidden transitions within the 3s23p4     ,     ,     ground configuration levels are considered. The 12 lowest LS target states are included in the calculation. Effective collision strengths are obtained by averaging the electron collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities. Results are presented for electron temperatures in the range  log  T (K)=3.3  to  log  T (K)=5.5  , appropriate for astrophysical applications. These are the only effective collision strength data that are currently available.  相似文献
