The dynamic through–soil interaction between nearby pile supported structures in a viscoelastic half-space, under incident S and Rayleigh waves, is numerically studied. To this end, a three-dimensional viscoelastic BEM–FEM formulation for the dynamic analysis of piles and pile groups in the frequency domain is used, where soil is modelled by BEM and piles are simulated by one-dimensional finite elements as Bernoulli beams. This formulation has been enhanced to include the presence of linear superstructures founded on pile groups, so that structure–soil–structure interaction (SSSI) can be investigated making use of a direct methodology with an affordable number of degrees of freedom. The influence of SSSI on lateral spectral deformation, vertical and rotational response, and shear forces at pile heads, for several configurations of shear one-storey buildings, is addressed. Maximum response spectra are also presented. SSSI effects on groups of structures with similar dynamic characteristics have been found to be important. The system response can be either amplified or attenuated according to the distance between adjacent buildings, which has been related to dynamic properties of the overall system.

The paper presents a numerical model for the dynamic analysis of pile groups with inclined piles in horizontally layered soil deposits. Piles are modelled with Euler–Bernoulli beams, while the soil is supposed to be constituted by independent infinite viscoelastic horizontal layers. The pile–soil–pile interaction as well as the hysteretic and geometric damping is taken into account by means of two‐dimensional elastodynamic Green's functions. Piles cap is considered by introducing a rigid constraint; the condensation of the problem permits a consistent derivation of both the dynamic impedance matrix of the soil–foundation system and the foundation input motion. These quantities are those used to perform inertial soil–structure interaction analyses in the framework of the substructure approach. Furthermore, the model allows evaluating the kinematic stress resultants in piles resulting from waves propagating in the soil deposit, taking into account the pile–soil–pile interactions. The model validation is carried out by performing accuracy analyses and comparing results in terms of dynamic impedance functions, kinematic response parameters and pile stress resultants, with those furnished by 3D refined finite element models. To this purpose, classical elastodynamic solutions are adopted to define the soil–pile interaction problem. The model results in low computational demands without significant loss of precision, compared with more rigorous approaches or refined finite element models. Dynamic response of single piles to seismic waves is fundamentally different from the free‐field motion because of the interaction between the pile and the surrounding soil. Considering soil–pile interaction, this paper presents a new displacement model for the steady‐state kinematic response of single piles to vertically incident P‐waves on the basis of a continuum model. The governing equations and boundary conditions of the two undetermined functions in the model are obtained to be coupled by using Hamilton's principle. Then, the two unknown functions are decoupled and solved by an iterative algorithm numerically. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of the properties of the soil–pile system on the kinematic response of single piles. It is shown that the effects of the pile–soil modulus ratio, the slenderness ratio of the pile, and the frequency of the incident excitations are very significant. By contrast, the influence of soil damping on the kinematics of the system is slight and can be neglected. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Under the action of Rayleigh waves, pile head is easy to rotate with a concrete pile cap, and pure fixed-head condition is rarely achieved, which is a common phenomenon for it usually occurs on the precast piles with insufficient anchorage. In addition, the propagation characteristics of Rayleigh wave have been changed significantly due to the existence of capillary pressure and the coupling between phases in unsaturated soil, which significantly affects the pile-soil interaction. In order to study the above problems, a coupled vibration model of unsaturated soil–pile system subjected to Rayleigh waves is established on the basis that the pile cap is equivalent to a rigid mass block. Meanwhile, the soil constitution is simplified to linear-elastic and small deformations are assumed to occur during the vibration phase of soil–pile system. Then, the horizontal dynamic response of a homogeneous free-field unsaturated soil caused by propagating Rayleigh waves is obtained by using operator decomposition theory and variable separation method. The dynamic equilibrium equation of a pile is established by using the dynamic Winkler model and the Timoshenko beam theory, and the analytical solutions of the horizontal displacement, rotation angle, bending moment and shear force of pile body are derived according to the boundary conditions of flexible constraint of pile top. Based on the present solutions, the rationality of the proposed model is verified by comparing with the previous research results. Through parametric study, the influence of rotational stiffness and yield bending moment of pile top on the horizontal dynamic characteristics of Rayleigh waves induced pile is investigated in detailed. The analysis results can be utilized for the seismic design of pile foundation under Rayleigh waves.

This paper presents an investigation of the nonlinear behaviour of single piles subjected to varying levels of vertical dynamic load. A good number of tests are performed for the understanding of the dynamic behaviour of single hollow steel piles embedded in layered soil. Experimental results are validated with results obtained from a nonlinear numerical analysis using commercially available Finite Element Method (FEM) based software. The results of numerical analysis and experimental investigations showed that the length of pile has significant influence on resonant frequency and amplitude of the pile foundation. It has also been found that the slippage of pile from the surrounding soil considerably affects the resonance frequency and amplitude of the soil–pile foundation system.

A number of solutions and computer programs are already available to determine the dynamic stiffness of complete pile foundations, assuming linear elastic soil behavior and perfect bonding between the piles and the surrounding soil. These are assumptions that would be generally valid for properly designed machine foundations where very small strains should be expected. A number of approximate formulations have also been developed. Among these the most commonly used one is that proposed by Poulos (1971) [12] for the static case, computing interaction coefficients between the heads of two piles considered by themselves, then forming a matrix of these coefficients to obtain the interaction between the heads of all the piles in the group. Additional approximations have been suggested, particularly for the computation of the interaction coefficients, using closed form expressions. In this paper, approximate expressions that can be used for preliminary estimates, at the very early stages of the design, without the need of computers, are presented. They are intended for pile groups with pile spacing of the order of 3 diameters, typical relations between the modulus of elasticity of the piles and that of the soil between 100 and 1000, and very small amplitude vibrations.

The beneficial or detrimental role of battered piles on the dynamic response of piled foundations has not been yet fully elucidated. In order to shed more light on this aspect, kinematic interaction factors of deep foundations with inclined piles, are provided for single‐battered piles, as well as for 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 groups of piles subjected to vertically incident plane shear S waves. Piles are modelled as linear‐elastic Bernoulli beams, whereas soil is assumed to be a linear, isotropic, homogeneous viscoelastic half‐space. Different pile group configurations, pile‐soil stiffness ratios, and rake angles are considered. The relevance and main trends observed in the influence of the rake angle on the kinematic interaction factors of the analysed foundations are inferred from the presented results. An important dependence of the kinematic interaction factors on the rake angle is observed together with the existence of an inclination angle at which cap rotation and excitation become out of phase in the low‐to‐mid frequency range. The existence of a small batter angle that provides minimum cap rotation is also shown. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a parametric study that looks into the influence of pile rake angle on the kinematic internal forces of deep foundations with inclined piles. Envelopes of maximum kinematic bending moments, shear forces and axial loads are presented along single inclined piles and 2 × 2 symmetrical square pile groups with inclined elements subjected to an earthquake generated by vertically incident shear waves. Inclination angles from 0° to 30° are considered, and three different pile–soil stiffness ratios are studied. These results are obtained through a frequency–domain analysis using a boundary element–finite element code in which the soil is modelled by the boundary element method as a homogeneous, viscoelastic, unbounded region, and the piles are modelled by finite elements as Euler–Bernoulli beams. The rotational kinematic response of the pile foundations is shown to be a key factor on the evolution of the kinematic internal forces along the foundations. A new model named double-shear model based on Pasternak foundation and Timoshenko beam theory is developed to evaluate the effect of a forced harmonic vibration pile to its adjacent pile in multilayered soil medium. The double-shear model takes into account the shear deformation and the rotational inertia of piles as well as the shear deformation of soil. The piles are simulated as Timoshenko beams, which are embedded in a layered Pasternak foundation. The differential equation of transverse vibration for a pile is solved by the initial parameter method. The dynamic interaction factors for the layered soil medium are obtained by the transfer matrix method. The formulation and the implementation have been verified by means of several examples. The individual shear effects of soil and piles on the interaction factors are evaluated through a parametric study. Compared to Winkler model with Euler beam, the present model gives much better results for the dynamic interaction of piles embedded in stiff soil with small slenderness ratios. Finally, the effect of a forced long pile to a short pile embedded in multilayered soil medium is studied in detail.

This paper presents the results of lateral impact load field tests conducted on a near-shore steel pipe pile vibro-driven into soft marine clay. Two series of tests are carried out, the first 1 week and the second 10 weeks after the vibro-driving. The pile is instrumented with an unconventional technique for field tests in marine environment which includes an accelerometer at the pile head, strain gauges and pore pressure transducers along the pile. Instruments are properly protected from marine environment and pile driving installation method. Tests are aimed at investigating the dynamic soil-water-pile interaction and determining the dynamic characteristics of the whole system at very small strain. The obtained results show the complex dynamic behaviour of the vibrating soil-water-pile system in terms of natural frequencies, damping and mode shapes. The variation in the dynamic behaviour in time, due to reconsolidation of soil subsequent to vibro-driving is also discussed. Furthermore, the horizontal dynamic impedance function of the whole system is derived from the experimental data over a wide frequency range and compared with that obtained from a numerical soil–pile interaction model.

When analysing the seismic response of pile groups, a vertically‐incident wavefield is usually employed even though it does not necessarily correspond to the worst case scenario. This work aims to study the influences of both the type of seismic body wave and its angle of incidence on the dynamic response of pile foundations. To this end, the formulation of SV, SH and P obliquely‐incident waves is presented and implemented in a frequency‐domain boundary element‐finite element code for the dynamic analysis of pile foundations and piled structures. Results are presented in terms of bending moments at cap level of single piles and 3 × 3 pile groups, both in frequency and in time domains. It is found that, in general, the vertical incidence is not the most unfavourable situation. In particular, obliquely‐incident SV waves with angles of incidence smaller than the critical one, a situation in which the mechanism of propagation of the waves in the soil changes and surface waves appear, yield bending moments much larger than those obtained for vertically‐incident wavefields. It is also shown that the influence of pile‐to‐pile interaction on the kinematic bending moments becomes significant for non‐vertical incidence, especially for P and SV waves. The paper presents a numerical model for the analysis of the soil–structure kinematic interaction of single piles and pile groups embedded in layered soil deposits during seismic actions. A finite element model is considered for the pile group and the soil is assumed to be a Winkler‐type medium. The pile–soil–pile interaction and the radiation problem are accounted for by means of elastodynamic Green's functions. Condensation of the problem permits a consistent and straightforward derivation of both the impedance functions and the foundation input motion, which are necessary to perform the inertial soil–structure interaction analyses. The model proposed allows calculating the internal forces induced by soil–pile and pile‐to‐pile interactions. Comparisons with data available in literature are made to study the convergence and validate the model. An application to a realistic pile foundation is given to demonstrate the potential of the model to catch the dynamic behaviour of the soil–foundation system and the stress resultants in each pile. A substructuring method has been implemented for the seismic analysis of bridge piers founded on vertical piles and pile groups in multi-layered soil. The method reproduces semi-analytically both the kinematic and inertial soil–structure interaction, in a simple realistic way. Vertical S-wave propagation and the pile-to-pile interplay are treated with sufficient rigor, within the realm of equivalent-linear soil behaviour, while a variety of support conditions of the bridge deck on the pier can be studied with the method. Analyses are performed in both frequency and time domains, with the excitation specified at the surface of the outcropping (‘elastic’) rock. A parameter study explores the role of soil–structure interaction by elucidating, for typical bridge piers founded on soft soil, the key phenomena and parameters associated with the interplay between seismic excitation, soil profile, pile–foundation, and superstructure. Results illustrate the potential errors from ignoring: (i) the radiation damping generated from the oscillating piles, and (ii) the rotational component of motion at the head of the single pile or the pile-group cap. Results are obtained for accelerations of bridge deck and foundation points, as well as for bending moments along the piles. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A numerical analysis of pile driving for tapered piles is presented in this paper. A three-dimensional finite difference analysis for tapered angle and geometry effects has been used on pile driving response of tapered piles. The simulation considers an idealization for pile–soil system in drivability. The vertical pile is assumed to have linear and elastic behavior. It is also assumed that the soil is elasto-plastic material and its failure stage is controlled using the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. At the soil–pile contact surfaces along the pile shaft and pile toe, slip is allowed to occur during the driving procedure using interface elements. Quiet boundaries are used to prevent waves traveling in the lateral and vertical directions for the soil. Cylindrical, fully tapered, and semi-tapered piles were analyzed. The results obtained from numerical analyses were compared with those obtained from available laboratory tests and also other available numerical data, resulting in a satisfactory agreement. The results have shown that among piles of the same length and material volume, with increasing the taper angle from zero (representing a cylindrical pile), the driving stresses decrease and the permanent pile toe settlement (set) increases. These are interesting in pile driving and are on the safe side for driven piles and increasing the driving efficiency. It has also been found that the geometry of the pile can generally influence the pile drivability. Generally speaking, tapered and partially tapered piles offer better drivability performance than cylindrical piles of the same volume and length.

Most offshore platforms are supported on long and large-diameter piles with variable wall-thickness along the length, and soil properties varying with depth. The design and analyses of these piles are made by modelling the soil-pile system with a beam-on-Winkler foundation. Therefore, evaluation of appropriate soil-pile springs for use in such analyses is a matter of concern. Fundamental characteristics of dynamic lateral load-deflection relationships for piles were studied analytically considering the soil-pile-structure interaction under seismic loading conditions. The soil layer was assumed homogeneous, linearly elastic with hysteretic type material damping, and overlying a rigid base. A superstructure with multi-degrees of freedom was supported by a single vertical pile hinged at the rigid base. Parametric studies were carried out to identify the influence of the system parameters on the behaviour of the dynamic lateral load-deflection relationships of piles. The lateral load-deflection relationships vary considerably with depth and are influenced not only by the dynamic properties of soil but also by the structural properties of a pile and loading conditions. These lateral load-deflection relationships can be used to define the soil-pile springs for the seismic response analysis of a soil-pile-structure system, and the results can be extended to problems with soil profiles with layering and non-linearity.

Kinematic pile–soil interaction is investigated analytically through a Beam-on-Dynamic-Winkler-Foundation model. A cylindrical vertical pile in a homogeneous stratum, excited by vertically-propagating harmonic shear waves, is examined in the realm of linear viscoelastic material behaviour. New closed-form solutions for bending, displacements and rotations atop the pile, are derived for different boundary conditions at the head (free, fixed) and tip (free, hinged, fixed). Contrary to classical elastodynamic theory where pile response is governed by six dimensionless ratios, in the realm of the proposed Winkler analysis three dimensionless parameters suffice for describing pile–soil interaction: (1) a mechanical slenderness accounting for geometry and pile–soil stiffness contrast, (2) a dimensionless frequency (which is different from the classical elastodynamic parameter a0=ω d/Vs), and (3) soil material damping. With reference to kinematic pile bending, insight into the physics of the problem is gained through a rigorous superposition scheme involving an infinitely-long pile excited kinematically, and a pile of finite length excited by a concentrated force and a moment at the tip. It is shown that for long piles kinematic response is governed by a single dimensionless frequency parameter, leading to a unique master curve pertaining to all pile lengths and pile–soil stiffness ratios.
