MAGIA is a mission approved by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) for Phase A study. Using a single large-diameter laser retroreflector, a large laser retroreflector array and an atomic clock onboard MAGIA we propose to perform several fundamental physics and absolute positioning metrology experiments: VESPUCCI, an improved test of the gravitational redshift in the Earth?CMoon system predicted by General Relativity; MoonLIGHT-P, a precursor test of a second generation Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) payload for precision gravity and lunar science measurements under development for NASA, ASI and robotic missions of the proposed International Lunar Network (ILN); Selenocenter (the center of mass of the Moon), the determination of the position of the Moon center of mass with respect to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame/System (ITRF/ITRS); this will be compared to the one from Apollo and Lunokhod retroreflectors on the surface; MapRef, the absolute referencing of MAGIA??s lunar altimetry, gravity and geochemical maps with respect to the ITRF/ITRS. The absolute positioning of MAGIA will be achieved thanks to: (1) the laboratory characterization of the retroreflector performance at INFN-LNF; (2) the precision tracking by the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), which gives two fundamental contributions to the ITRF/ITRS, i.e. the metrological definition of the geocenter (the Earth center of mass) and of the scale of length; (3) the radio science and accelerometer payloads; (4) support by the ASI Space Geodesy Center in Matera, Italy. Future ILN geodetic nodes equipped with MoonLIGHT and the Apollo/Lunokhod retroreflectors will become the first realization of the International Moon Reference Frame (IMRF), the lunar analog of the ITRF.

Age of geological units, surface mineralogical composition, volcanism, tectonics and cratering are major keys for unravelling the geodynamic and geological history of a planet. Thanks to the extensive exploration of the 1960s and 1970s and the compositional mapping of the 1990s missions (Galileo, Clementine and Luna Prospector), the Moon has a unique geological dataset among the extraterrestrial Solar System bodies. The recent and on-going missions, along with the future plans for lunar exploration, will together acquire an extraordinary amount of data. This should provide a solid basis to meet broad objectives like the constraints on the heterogeneity of Lunar composition and the presence of water deposits, the understanding of volcanic and tectonic evolution as well as more specific issues such as the genetic classification of volcanic domes, origin of the dark-halos craters, lava flow emplacement mechanisms, and the kinematics and deformational styles of tectonic structures. The Italian small mission MAGIA (Missione Altimetrica Gravimetrica geochImica lunAre) will be equipped with an integrated context camera and imaging spectrometer, a high resolution camera and a radar altimeter. The spatial and spectral resolution of these instruments will provide data products complementing past and ongoing Lunar mission data, particularly for the polar regions where a full resolution coverage is planned. A general review of some still unanswered questions on lunar surface composition, cold traps, volcanism, tectonics and cratering records is presented here in order to illustrate the potential contribution of MAGIA to these subjects.

GETEMME (Gravity, Einstein??s Theory, and Exploration of the Martian Moons?? Environment), a mission which is being proposed in ESA??s Cosmic Vision program, shall be launched for Mars on a Soyuz Fregat in 2020. The spacecraft will initially rendezvous with Phobos and Deimos in order to carry out a comprehensive mapping and characterization of the two satellites and to deploy passive Laser retro-reflectors on their surfaces. In the second stage of the mission, the spacecraft will be transferred into a lower 1500-km Mars orbit, to carry out routine Laser range measurements to the reflectors on Phobos and Deimos. Also, asynchronous two-way Laser ranging measurements between the spacecraft and stations of the ILRS (International Laser Ranging Service) on Earth are foreseen. An onboard accelerometer will ensure a high accuracy for the spacecraft orbit determination. The inversion of all range and accelerometer data will allow us to determine or improve dramatically on a host of dynamic parameters of the Martian satellite system. From the complex motion and rotation of Phobos and Deimos we will obtain clues on internal structures and the origins of the satellites. Also, crucial data on the time-varying gravity field of Mars related to climate variation and internal structure will be obtained. Ranging measurements will also be essential to improve on several parameters in fundamental physics, such as the Post-Newtonian parameter ?? as well as time-rate changes of the gravitational constant and the Lense-Thirring effect. Measurements by GETEMME will firmly embed Mars and its satellites into the Solar System reference frame.

Luni-solar perturbations of an Earth satellite
Luni-solar perturbations of the orbit of an artificial Earth satellite are given by modifying the analytical theory of an artificial lunar satellite derived by the author in recent papers. Expressions for the first-order changes, both secular and periodic, in the elements of the geocentric Keplerian orbit of the earth satellite are given, the moon's geocentric orbit, including solar perturbations in it, being found by using Brown's lunar theory. The effects of Sun and Moon on the satellite orbit are described to a high order of accuracy so that the theory may be used for distant earth satellites.

We have estimated a preliminary error budget for the Italian Spring Accelerometer (ISA) that will be allocated onboard the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) of the European Space Agency (ESA) space mission to Mercury named BepiColombo. The role of the accelerometer is to remove from the list of unknowns the non-gravitational accelerations that perturb the gravitational trajectory followed by the MPO in the strong radiation environment that characterises the orbit of Mercury around the Sun. Such a role is of fundamental importance in the context of the very ambitious goals of the Radio Science Experiments (RSE) of the BepiColombo mission. We have subdivided the errors on the accelerometer measurements into two main families: (i) the pseudo-sinusoidal errors and (ii) the random errors. The former are characterised by a periodic behaviour with the frequency of the satellite mean anomaly and its higher order harmonic components, i.e., they are deterministic errors. The latter are characterised by an unknown frequency distribution and we assumed for them a noise-like spectrum, i.e., they are stochastic errors. Among the pseudo-sinusoidal errors, the main contribution is due to the effects of the gravity gradients and the inertial forces, while among the random-like errors the main disturbing effect is due to the MPO centre-of-mass displacements produced by the onboard High Gain Antenna (HGA) movements and by the fuel consumption and sloshing. Very subtle to be considered are also the random errors produced by the MPO attitude corrections necessary to guarantee the nadir pointing of the spacecraft. We have therefore formulated the ISA error budget and the requirements for the satellite in order to guarantee an orbit reconstruction for the MPO spacecraft with an along-track accuracy of about 1 m over the orbital period of the satellite around Mercury in such a way to satisfy the RSE requirements.

The Mission MAGIA (Missione Altimetrica Geofisica GeochImica lunAre) was proposed in the framework of the ??Bando per Piccole Missioni?? of ASI (Italian Space Agency) in 2007. The mission was selected for a phase A study by ASI on February 7th 2008. The tight budget allocation, combined with quite ambitious scientific objectives, set challenging requirements for the satellite design. The paper gives a fast overview of the payloads complement and of the mission-constrained design drivers, including cost minimization, risk reduction, and AIT flexibility. The spacecraft architecture is then outlined, along with an overview of the key subsystems and trade-offs. Some details are given of a Moon gravitometric experiment based on a mother?Cdaughter satellite configuration with the daughter being a subsatellite released from the MAGIA satellite and intended to circle the Moon at a very low altitude. Budgets are appended at the end of the paper showing the key study results.

In the present study an investigation of the collision orbits of natural satellites of the Moon (considered to be of finite dimensions) is developed, and the tendency of natural satellites of the Moon to collide on the visible or the far side of the Moon is studied. The collision course of the satellite is studied up to its impact on the lunar surface for perturbations of its initial orbit arbitrarily induced, for example, by the explosion of a meteorite. Several initial conditions regarding the position of the satellite to collide with the Moon on its near (visible) or far (invisible) side is examined in connection to the initial conditions and the direction of the motion of the satellite. The distribution of the lunar craters-originating impact of lunar satellites or celestial bodies which followed a course around the Moon and lost their stability - is examined. First, we consider the planar motion of the natural satellite and its collision on the Moon's surface without the presence of the Earth and Sun. The initial velocities of the satellite are determined in such a way so its impact on the lunar surface takes place on the visible side of the Moon. Then, we continue imparting these velocities to the satellite, but now in the presence of the Earth and Sun; and study the forementioned impacts of the satellites but now in the Earth-Moon-Satellite system influenced also by the Sun. The initial distances of the satellite are taken as the distances which have been used to compute periodic orbits in the planar restricted three-body problem (cf. Gousidou-Koutita, 1980) and its direction takes different angles with the x-axis (Earth-Moon axis). Finally, we summarise the tendency of the satellite's impact on the visible or invisible side of the Moon.

The D-CIXS X-ray spectrometer on ESA's SMART-1 mission will provide the first global coverage of the lunar surface in X-rays, providing absolute measurements of elemental abundances. The instrument will be able to detect elemental Fe, Mg, Al and Si under normal solar conditions and several other elements during solar flare events. These data will allow for advances in several areas of lunar science, including an improved estimate of the bulk composition of the Moon, detailed observations of the lateral and vertical nature of the crust, chemical observations of the maria, investigations into the lunar regolith, and mapping of potential lunar resources. In combination with information to be obtained by the other instruments on SMART-1 and the data already provided by the Clementine and Lunar Prospector missions, this information will allow for a more detailed look at some of the fundamental questions that remain regarding the origin and evolution of the Moon.

NASA and ESA have outlined visions for solar system exploration that will include a series of lunar robotic precursor missions to prepare for, and support a human return to the Moon, and future human exploration of Mars and other destinations, including possibly asteroids. One of the guiding principles for exploration is to pursue compelling scientific questions about the origin and evolution of life. The search for life on objects such as Mars will require careful operations, and that all systems be sufficiently cleaned and sterilized prior to launch to ensure that the scientific integrity of extraterrestrial samples is not jeopardized by terrestrial organic contamination. Under the Committee on Space Research’s (COSPAR’s) current planetary protection policy for the Moon, no sterilization procedures are required for outbound lunar spacecraft, nor is there a different planetary protection category for human missions, although preliminary COSPAR policy guidelines for human missions to Mars have been developed. Future in situ investigations of a variety of locations on the Moon by highly sensitive instruments designed to search for biologically derived organic compounds would help assess the contamination of the Moon by lunar spacecraft. These studies could also provide valuable “ground truth” data for Mars sample return missions and help define planetary protection requirements for future Mars bound spacecraft carrying life detection experiments. In addition, studies of the impact of terrestrial contamination of the lunar surface by the Apollo astronauts could provide valuable data to help refine future Mars surface exploration plans for a human mission to Mars.

The design of spacecraft trajectories is a crucial part of a space mission design. Often the mission goal is tightly related to the spacecraft trajectory. A geostationary orbit is indeed mandatory for a stationary equatorial position. Visiting a solar system planet implies that a proper trajectory is used to bring the spacecraft from Earth to the vicinity of the planet. The first planetary missions were based on conventional trajectories obtained with chemical engine rockets. The manoeuvres could be considered 'impulsive' and clear limitations to the possible missions were set by the energy required to reach certain orbits. The gravity-assist trajectories opened a new way of wandering through the solar system, by exploiting the gravitational field of some planets. The advent of other propulsion techniques, as electric or ion propulsion and solar sail, opened a new dimension to the planetary trajectory, while at the same time posing new challenges. These 'low thrust' propulsion techniques cannot be considered 'impulsive' anymore and require for their study mathematical techniques which are substantially different from before. The optimisation of such trajectories is also a new field of flight dynamics, which involves complex treatments especially in multi-revolution cases as in a lunar transfer trajectory. One advantage of these trajectories is that they allow to explore regions of space where different bodies gravitationally compete with each other. We can exploit therefore these gravitational perturbations to save fuel or reduce time of flight. The SMART-1 spacecraft, first European mission to the Moon, will test for the first time all these techniques. The paper is a summary report on various activities conducted by the project team in these areas.

In view of the limitation of ground-based Tracking Telemetry and Command (TT&C) system in covering the geostationary satellite in space and time, the method of determining the orbit of the geostationary satellite by the LEO (Low Earth Orbit) multi-satellites network with small orbit inclination was proposed. According to the space environment and optical viewing conditions, the simulation data were screened to simulate the real observation scene. The precise orbit determination (POD) of geostationary satellite was calculated by using the optical angle measurement data and the numerical method. By comparing with the reference orbit, under the condition of platform’s orbit accuracy of 5 m, measurement accuracy of 5-arcsecond, and 12 hours of observation, the POD accuracy of geostationary satellite by two LEO satellites can reach the order of kilometers, while the POD accuracy by four LEO satellites can reach the order of 100 meters. Therefore, the POD accuracy has been greatly improved with the increase of the number of LEO satellites.

With the prospect of humans returning to Moon by the end of the next decade, considerable attention is being paid to technologies required to transport astronauts to the lunar surface and then to be able to carry out surface science. Recent and ongoing initiatives have focused on scientific questions to be asked. In contrast, few studies have addressed how these scientific priorities will be achieved. In this contribution, we provide some of the lessons learned from the exploration of the Haughton impact structure, an ideal lunar analogue site in the Canadian Arctic. Essentially, by studying how geologists carry out field science, we can provide guidelines for lunar surface operations. Our goal in this contribution is to inform the engineers and managers involved in mission planning, rather than the field geology community. Our results show that the exploration of the Haughton impact structure can be broken down into 3 distinct phases: (1) reconnaissance; (2) systematic regional-scale mapping and sampling; and (3) detailed local-scale mapping and sampling. This break down is similar to the classic scientific method practiced by field geologists of regional exploratory mapping followed by directed mapping at a local scale, except that we distinguish between two different phases of exploratory mapping. Our data show that the number of stops versus the number of samples collected versus the amount of data collected varied depending on the mission phase, as does the total distance covered per EVA. Thus, operational scenarios could take these differences into account, depending on the goals and duration of the mission. Important lessons learned include the need for flexibility in mission planning in order to account for serendipitous discoveries, the highlighting of key “science supersites” that may require return visits, the need for a rugged but simple human-operated rover, laboratory space in the habitat, and adequate room for returned samples, both in the habitat and in the return vehicle. The proposed set of recommendations ideally should be tried and tested in future analogue missions at terrestrial impact sites prior to planetary missions.
