We examined patterns of co-existence for three species of scincid lizards (Sphenops sepsoides, Scincus scincus, and Chalcides ocellatus) in the simple sand dune habitat of North Sinai, Egypt. We first examined the morphological differences among the three species and compared their niche use and escape tactics in the context of their morphologies. Our results suggests that natural selection has favored two different phenotypes, Scincus scincus's long limbs with toe fringes and Sphenops sepspoides's extremely reduced limbs for sand locomotion. These two sand specialists, Sphenops sepsoides and Scincus scincus, shared microhabitats such as soft substrate and occurred further away from vegetation but showed strong separation in the surface temperatures at which they were active. The generalist species, C. ocellatus which lacked toe fringes and had relatively short limbs that were not reduced enough for fossorial movement, was found closer to vegetation and on harder substrates where such traits may be beneficial. Escape tactics may further strengthen habitat partitioning between desert generalists and sand specialists as C. ocellatus sprint to vegetation to escape predators whereas both sand specialists dive into the sand. Our results suggest that traditional ideas about predation risk may not apply to sand diving lizards as they may be able to venture far from vegetation refuges without increased vulnerability to predation.  相似文献

Many studies illustrate that bioturbating animal species individually affect aquatic sediments through diverse mechanistic abilities, whereas assessments of joint effects of such species on sediments are relatively rare. Such joint effects have implications for real systems, in which different bioturbators coexist, but are difficult to predict for two reasons. First, they can be additive (being the sum of the individual effects of each species) or they can be positive or negative interactive (being greater or smaller than the sum of the individual effects). Second, if interactive, they can depend on biotic interactions that affect the bioturbating activities of the species and/or they can depend on physical interactions among bioturbator-induced sediment modifications. Using experimental streams, we assessed such joint effects on gravel–sand sediments for flow and sediment conditions preferred by barbel (Barbus barbus) but also used by gudgeon (Gobio gobio) and, in a second experiment, for flow and sediment conditions preferred by both male crayfish (Orconectes limosus) and gudgeon. These species have different mechanistic abilities to affect gravel and/or sand in stream beds. In each experiment, we measured (i) the transport of gravel and sand at baseflow (during 12 experimental days); (ii) four sediment surface characteristics (after 12 d); and (iii) the critical shear stress (τc) causing incipient gravel and sand motion during experimental floods (after 12 d). Gudgeon contributed differently to the joint effects in the two experiments, which related to its individual weight, prevailing baseflow shear stress, sediment particle weight, and sediment mixture (availability of surface sand). Overall, the species pairs had predominantly negative interactive joint effects on the sediment variables assessed by us. Both a literature survey and observations during the experiments provided no evidence for direct biotic interactions between barbel and gudgeon or crayfish and gudgeon, so one would reasonably associate their negative interactive effects on the sediments with physical interactions among bioturbator-induced sediment surface modifications. Individually, each species reduced the percentage of sand in the surface layer and the surface algal cover to relatively low values so that the species pairs could not accomplish much greater joint effects on these variables, explaining their negative interactive effects on them. As algal cover particularly affected the τc for gravel and sand, the negative interactive effects of the animals on this surface variable chained toward the τc for the sediments, on which the species pairs also had negative interactive effects. Such chained negative interactive effects on sediment variables are seemingly a general pattern of joint bioturbator effects on aquatic sediments, i.e., the many so far described single-species effects should be smaller than their sum if the species coexists in nature.  相似文献

To understand the dynamics of small populations in arid environments, particularly in small insular ecosystems, it is crucial to understand the interactions between species inhabiting these environments. Here we investigate the interactions between lizards and scorpions in a small arid insular ecosystem in the Mediterranean. Experimental observations suggest that scorpions are regarded as prey by lizards. However, the response of lizards was sex-dependent, with males being more likely to attack scorpions than females. This can be associated with the larger body and head size, and bite forces in males, presumably making scorpions a profitable prey. Predation on lizards by scorpions has been also documented, suggesting a classic case of cross predation.  相似文献

The flux profile of a blowing sand cloud: a wind tunnel investigation   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
The flux profile of a blowing sand cloud, or the variation of blown sand flux with height, is the reflection of blown sand particles that move in different trajectories, and also the basis for checking drifting sand. Here we report the wind tunnel results of systematic tests of the flux profiles of different sized sands at different free-stream wind velocities. The results reveal that within the 60-cm near-surface layer, the decay of blown sand flux with height can be expressed by an exponential function: qh=aexp(−h/b), where, qh is the blown sand transport rate at height h, a and b are parameters that vary with wind velocity and sand size. The significance of coefficient a and b in the function is defined: a represents the transport rate in true creep and b implies the relative decay rate with height of the blown sand transport rate. The true creep fraction, the ratio of the sand transported on the surface (h=0) to the total transport varies widely, decreasing with both sand size and wind speed. The flux profiles are converted to straight lines by plotting sand transport rate, qh, on a log-scale. The slope of the straight lines that represents the relative decay rate with height of sand transport rate decreases with an increase in free-stream wind velocity and sand grain size, implying that relatively more of the blown sand is transported to greater heights as grain size and wind speed increase. The average saltating height represented by the height where 50% of the cumulative flux percentage occurs increases with both wind speed and grain size, implying that saltation becomes more intense as grain size and/or wind velocity increase.  相似文献

采用线路踏查法和空间代替时间的方法,调查统计鄱阳湖滨多宝沙山沙地植物组成、优势类群以及风沙化过程中植物组成、多样性、生态习性和生活型的变化特点。结果表明:(1)鄱阳湖滨多宝沙山沙地植物有129种,隶属于58科104属,其中被子植物为研究区沙生植物的重要组成部分;生活型谱以高位芽植物居首位,其次为一年生植物,具有明显的亚热带荒漠属性;优势类群主要为蔷薇科(Rosaceae)、蝶形花科(Papilionaceae)、菊科(Compositae)和禾本科(Gramineae)植物。(2)土地风沙化过程中,植物组成变化较大,固定沙丘上以特有种占优势,流动沙丘上主要是共有种,半流动沙丘上以共有种和稀有种组成;植物丰富度、多样性指数逐渐降低;旱生植物比例增多,中生植物减少,湿生植物仅在固定沙丘阶段出现;一年生植物的减少,地下芽植物的增加,变化幅度较大的为半流动沙丘至流动沙丘阶段。  相似文献

通过对古尔班通古特沙漠中9个样地73份生物土壤结皮蓝藻的研究,分析该沙漠生物结皮中蓝藻的区系组成、生态分布特点和蓝藻在生物结皮中的作用机制。研究表明,该沙漠中有蓝藻门植物6科25属77种,其中以丝状种类占优势;蓝藻在不同地貌部位分布略有差异,在丘间低地种类最为丰富;不同种类的蓝藻对地貌部位的选择性不同,大部分对地貌部位具有选择性;蓝藻种类和数量在结皮层较多,在结皮下层明显减少。生物结皮的显微观察揭示了丝状蓝藻和胞外多糖形成错综复杂的网状结构,起着捆绑、黏结沙粒和固定沙粒的作用。  相似文献

闽江河口湿地共有鸟类118种,其中有冬 候鸟72种,夏候鸟12种,留鸟19种、旅鸟15种。 属于国家重点保护的珍稀鸟类14种,福建省重点 保护的鸟类21种,并有中日或中澳协定保护的鸟 类104种。共有维管束植物109科294属408种(含 亚种、变种)。有红树林、沙生植被、浅水植被、 沼泽植被4种植被类型和18个群系、22个群丛。有 大型底栖无脊椎动物61种,隶属于4门30科50属, 其中,节肢动物甲壳纲的种类最多,有13科23属 31种,其次为软体动物,有14科24属27种,有 浮游生物176种,其中浮游藻类97种,隶属于5门 45属;浮游动物有79种,隶属于6门62属。根据 闽江河口天然湿地类型,生物多样性的丰度、多 度、生态功能,将其分为3个层次进行保护和开发 利用:即重点保护类;保护性开发类;适度开发 类。  相似文献

Nitraria sphaerocarpa Maxim., a typical desert plant which often appears in nebkha form, is widely distributed along the periphery of oasis in arid regions of Northwest China, and plays an important role in desertification control around oases. In this paper, the characteristics and distribution patterns of N. sphaerocarpa nebkhas were investigated in a Gobi environment outside an oasis. Results shows that about 200 N. sphaerocarpa nebkhas per hectare was recorded and total sand sediments was 25 m3/ha. Nebkhas vary in size, and the mean height (H) and horizontal composition (L) were 15 cm and 80 cm, respectively. There exists a significant linear relationship between H and L, suggesting that the investigated nebkhas are mostly in the growth stage. The numbers, height and sand deposit of nebkhas decreased with increasing distance away from the oasis. Grain-size analysis indicates that the mean grain size of sediments at the crests of nebkhas increased with increasing nebkha height. Organic C and total N concentrations were related to the mean grain size. It was concluded that N. sphaerocarpa shrubs are efficient horizontal sand traps for wind-driven sediments. A better understanding of the development of nebkha can provide information for the design of biological sand control measures around oases in arid regions.  相似文献

Sand and gravel materials are often used in Ethiopia's construction sector. However, the impacts of sand mining on the water body's habitat and biodiversity are not yet considered in the country. In this paper, we study how sand mining activities at Lake Tana and its inflowing rivers affect the environment and spawning grounds of the endemic Labeobarbus species. We measured physico‐chemical parameters in‐situ and developed structured questionnaires to collect primary data on the fishery and sand mining. We found significant differences in conductivity, total dissolved solids and temperature among sampling sites (P < 0.05). Majority (>90 per cent) of the respondents confirmed the drastic physical changes in the rivers and a severe decline in fish production. The study revealed that the ecology of the mined rivers was seriously affected by sand mining, which interfered with migratory routes of fishes and resulted in loss of their spawning grounds. The unregulated sand mining also conflicted with the interests of the fisheries management and environment. Thus, urgent policy intervention is needed to protect the ever‐declining Labeobarbus species of Lake Tana and the environment.  相似文献

We measured the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) in the interstitial gas surrounding the sand-swimming Namib moleEremitalpa granti namibensis. At a sand temperature of 26 °C, which produced a nearly maximal rate of oxygen consumption, thePO2near the noses of the animals averaged only 0·9 kPa (6·7 Torr) below the level in the free atmosphere. High oxygen availability was a result of the notably low metabolic rate in the 20 g mammals and the dry, porous and metabolically inactive nature of dune sand. A mathematical model indicated that normal mammals weighing 200 g or more could comfortably exist completely encased in dune sand. We concluded that the moles' small size and low metabolic rate are not adaptations to hypoxia or hypercapnia underground but are probably related to low food availability and the energetic cost of foraging in their desert environment.  相似文献

Detailed wind tunnel tests were carried out to establish the mean downwind velocity and transport rate of different-sized loose dry sand at different free-stream wind velocities and heights, as well as to investigate the vertical variation in the concentration of blowing sand in a cloud. Particle dynamic analyzer (PDA) technology was used to measure the vertical variation in mean downwind velocity of a sand cloud in a wind tunnel. The results reveal that within the near-surface layer, the decay of blown sand flux with height can be expressed using an exponential function. In general, the mean downwind velocity increases with height and free-stream wind velocity, but decreases with grain size. The vertical variation in mean downwind velocity can be expressed by a power function. The concentration profile of sand within the saltation layer, calculated according to its flux profile and mean downwind profile, can be expressed using the exponential function: cz=ae−bz, where cz is the blown sand concentration at height z, and a and bare parameters changing regularly with wind velocity and sand size. The concentration profiles are converted to rays of straight lines by plotting logarithmic concentration values against height. The slope of the straight lines, representing the relative decay rate of concentration with height, decreases with an increase in free-stream wind velocity and grain size, implying that more blown sand is transported to greater heights as grain size and wind speed increase.  相似文献

Size frequency distributions of sediment particles in a wind tunnel containing a bed of non-uniform sand are investigated by re-interpreting existing experimental data using particle-size analysis. Each particle sample is classified into one of eight groups according to its size grading. The analysis reveals that the modal shape of the particle-size frequency distributions of the saltating sand at different elevations or longitudinal distances is similar to that of the mixed sand in the bed once the boundary layer is fully developed. The standard deviation of the grain-size frequency distribution increases with increasing elevation above the bed then stays constant, whereas its skewness decreases. The mean grain size decays exponentially with elevation. The aeolian sand mass flux is determined for each size grading at different vertical and horizontal measurement locations. The vertical profile of aeolian horizontal mass flux depends on the size grading. The distribution of the sand transport rate according to the mean grain size in each grading fits the normal distribution. A parameter wi is defined to reflect the likelihood of saltation for sand particles of the i-th size grading, and the mean sand size corresponding to the maximum value of wi is found to be 0.2 mm. In addition, wind velocity strongly influences the magnitudes of the particle-size distribution and the sand mass flux distribution in both vertical and longitudinal directions.  相似文献

The architectural parameters of Reaumuria soongorica root system in different habitats of Gansu Province, China were analyzed to examine its ecological adaptability to arid environments. Results show that: (1) Topological indices of R. Soongorica root sys- tem are small in all habitats, and root branching pattem tends to be dichotomous. Also, the indices gradually increase in the Min- qin windblown sand region and the Zhangye Gobi region in Hexi Corridor, which indicates that drought tends to produce her- ringbone-like root branching pattems. (2) Fractal dimension values ofR. Soongorica root system are small and not obvious in the Minqin windblown sand region and the Zhangye Gobi region in Hexi Corridor, with values of 1.1778 and 1.1169, respectively. Fractal dimension values are relatively large in Jiuzhoutai semi-arid hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau, which indicates that the R. Soongorica root system has better fractal characteristics in this region than in the other regions. (3) Total branching ra- tios of the R. Soongorica root system in arid regions of Hexi Corridor are smaller than that in the Jiuzhoutai semi-arid hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau. This shows that root branching ability in the semi-arid region is stronger, and it decreases to some degree with increased drought. (4) The root connection lengths of R. soongorica root system are long in all habitats, but there are significant length differences between the different habitats. The root connection length at the Minqin windblown sand region is the longest. It is concluded that R. soongoriea adapts to arid environments by decreasing root branching, decreasing root overlap and increasing root connection length, which makes its root branching pattern tend to be herringbone-like to reduce com- petition in root internal environment for nutrients and to enhance root absorption rate of nutrients, and ensure effective nutrition space. Thus the roots can absorb enough water and nutrients in resource-poor settings to ensure normal physiological requirements.  相似文献

We illustrate and discuss resting spore morphology found in populations ofAcanthoceras andUrosolenia, two widely distributed freshwater genera. 1995年首次在西藏日喀则进行固沙植物的引种试验,大多数中国内地固沙植物不适应该地的流动沙丘,沙面高温和生长季短是主要制约因素。沙木蓼和籽蒿表现最好;油蒿种子不能成熟,因此不能做后续植物;乡土植物砂生槐在播种当年出苗率低、生长缓慢,只能用做后期植物。在西藏日喀则,有效的植物固沙程序是:在保护措施(草方格沙障、砾石层)下,在流动沙丘上播种外来种沙木蓼、籽蒿和油蒿或移栽籽蒿,同时播种乡土植物砂生槐。在沙木蓼和籽蒿种群衰退、油蒿种群未衰退但不能靠天然下种自行更新时,砂生槐开始发挥固沙作用,并最终凭其适沙特性和长寿命接替先锋固沙植物有效地固定沙丘。选择乡土固沙植物应将重点放在蒿属和锦鸡儿属上。  相似文献

The dry and cold Tibetan Plateau is, by its nature, sensitive to desertification, and now human impacts and overexploitation makes things worse. One of the most important things involved in combating desertification is to stabilize mobile sandy land and facilitate revegetation. A study was conducted on shifting sand dunes of Tibetan Plateau to investigate the relationships among sand control, vegetation restoration and diversity dynamics of seed plant species. It was found that a positive correlation lay between sand stabilizing shrubs (Caragana korshinskii and Artemisia ordosica) and Leymus secalinus, a species of dominant and perennial grass in well-restored vegetation, but a negative correlation occurred between those shrubs and Agriophyllum arenarium indicator of shifting dunes. Secondly, sand stabilization facilitated revegetation, and total cover and cover of L. secalinus rose continuously from the beginning of restoration, but diversity indices showed a complex tendency. Based on these results, it was reasoned that on alpine shifting dunes of desertified regions, continual sand drifting caused by gales was the limiting factor for plant to survival. If sand barriers were established, sand drifting would be effectively controlled, then many native plant species could colonize shifting dunes gradually, so the process of revegetation was facilitated.  相似文献

在国家林业局磴口荒漠生态站长期监测的基础上,利用多种积沙仪,对乌兰布和沙漠东北缘流动沙丘、油蒿半固定沙丘、白刺半固定沙丘、油蒿固定沙丘、白刺固定沙丘5种典型下垫面近地面(0~100 cm)的风沙流输沙量进行了实地观测和对比分析。结果表明:(1) 输沙率(q)随高度(h)增加呈幂函数(q=ah-b,R2≥0.8409)规律衰减,随风速(v)增大呈幂函数(q=avb,R2≥0.9256)规律增加,42.8%~70.7%的输沙量分布在10 cm高度内,67.6%~90.0%的输沙量分布于30 cm高度内。当地表植被盖度达到40%以上时,输沙率下降至无植被覆盖地表输沙率的6.6%以下,可有效阻止地表风蚀。(2) 沙物质主要由粒径为50~250 μm的细沙和极细沙构成,各高度层风蚀物粒度组成服从单峰态分布,峰值在100~250 μm。随高度增加,风蚀物粒径范围趋于变窄,粒径趋于更细。(3) 起沙风多出现在WSW和NW方向,占全年起沙风的53.19%。风沙流中跃移输沙、蠕移输沙的空间分布在理论上应与风向频率分布基本一致,差异性主要由各方位风的强度和持续时间等因素导致。研究结果可为该区域防沙工程设计提供理论参考。  相似文献

豫东、豫北平原土层深厚,地势开阔平坦,便于灌溉,是我国粮棉的重要产区。然而沙荒地广布,春旱风大,流沙常埋没农田,打伤禾苗,阻碍交通,威胁村镇。风沙长期危害着部分地区农业生产的稳定和发展。解放前兰考县有6个村庄被沙埋没,民权县有18个村庄被埋没,有28个村庄被风沙所逼累次南迁;商丘县小韩庄在20年内南迁三次,高大沙丘紧紧围住村庄,肥美的土地,被沙埋三分之二。以上实例足以说明解放前沙区群众饱受风沙之苦。解放后已基本改变了沙区面貌,农业生产逐步提高。但由于沙荒性质尚未彻底改变,加之不断受旱灾的影响,流沙活动对农业生产仍然危害很大。  相似文献
