Cr-Saturation Arrays in Concentrate Garnet Compositions from Kimberlite and their Use in Mantle Barometry 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The spinelgarnet transition in Cr/Al-enriched peridotiticbulk compositions is known from experimental investigationsto occur at 2070 kbar, within the pressure range sampledby kimberlites. We show that the Cr2O3CaO compositionsof concentrate garnets from kimberlite have maximum Cr/Ca arrayscharacterized by Cr2O3/CaO 0·960·81, andinterpret the arrays as primary evidence of chromitegarnetcoexistence in Cr-rich harzburgitic or lherzolitic bulk compositionsderived from depth within the lithosphere. Under Cr-saturatedconditions on a known geotherm, each Cr/Ca array implicitlydelineates an isobar inside a garnet Cr2O3CaO diagram. This simplification invites a graphical approach to calibratean empirical Cr/Ca-in-pyrope barometer. Carbonaceous chromitegarnetharzburgite xenoliths from the Roberts Victor kimberlite tightlybracket a graphitediamond constraint (GDC) located atCr2O3 = 0·94CaO + 5·0 (wt %), representing a pivotalcalibration corresponding to 43 kbar on a 38 mW/m2 conductivegeotherm. Additional calibration points are established at 14,17·4 and 59·1 kbar by judiciously projecting garnetcompositions from simple-system experiments onto the same geotherm. The garnet Cr/Ca barometer is then simply formulated as follows(in wt %):
- if Cr2O3 0·94CaO + 5, then P38 (kbar) = 26·9+ 3·22Cr2O3 3·03CaO, or
- if Cr2O3 <0·94CaO + 5, then P38 (kbar) = 9·2+ 36[(Cr2O3+ 1·6)/(CaO + 7·02)].

Clay minerals in 32 samples collected from the upper 6 meters of drill core LF 82/1-3 in Lake Frome, Australia have been examined
using X-ray powder diffraction techniques. The results show that the clay mineral species are predominated by illite, kaolinite
and a small amount of montmorillonite. Minor chlorite and vermiculite can also be identified in some of the samples. In terms
of clay mineral species, crystallinity and other characteristics, the upper 6-m core can be divided into 3 sections, the boundaries
of which are marked at depths of about 125–150 cm and 415–455 cm with ages of 14 and 19 thousand years B.P., respectively.
The middle section at a burial depth of 150–415 cm may have been deposited under moist conditions while the other two under
relatively dry conditions. Additionally, some slight climatic fluctuations seem possible in different stages. 相似文献

Fluid-saturated subsolidus experiments from 2·0 to 6·5GPa, and from 680 to 800°C have been performed on threemodel peridotites in the system Na2OCaOFeOMgOAl2O3SiO2H2O(NCFMASH). Amphibole and chlorite coexist up to 2·4 GPa,700°C. Chlorite persists to 4·2 GPa at 680°C.Starting from 4·8 GPa, 680°C a 10 Å phase structurereplaces chlorite in all compositions. The 10 Å phasestructure contains significant Al2O3 (up to 10·53 wt%) deviating from the MgOSiO2H2O 10 Å phase(MSH 10 Å phase). A mixed layered structure (chloriteMSH10 Å phase) is proposed to account for aluminium observed. In the Tinaquillo lherzolite amphibole breakdown occurs viathe reaction
Thermal stabilityof chlorite (chlorite + orthopyroxene = forsterite + garnet+ H2O) is shifted towards lower temperatures, compared withthe system MASH. Furthermore, the chlorite thermal breakdownis also related to the degenerate reaction
Chlorite and the Al-10 Å phase structurecontribute significantly to the water budget in subduction zonesin the depth range relevant for arc magmatism, whereas amphibole-relatedfluid release is restricted to the forearc region. Chloriteand Al-10 Å phase breakdowns might explain the occurrenceof a double seismic zone by dehydration embrittlement. Metamorphic Evolution of Neoproterozoic Manganese Formations and their Country Rocks at Otjosondu, Namibia 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Manganiferous chemical sediments of Neoproterozoic age in Namibiawere subjected to high-Tlow-P metamorphism during theDamara Orogeny and display unique phase assemblages. The manganeseformations are embedded in iron formations and siliciclasticcountry rocks. This sequence is petrographically subdividedinto restricted lithotypes which bear specific mineral assemblagesand compositions depending on their protolith type. In puremanganese ores the critical assemblage braunite + haematite+ jacobsite + rhodonite is frequently developed, whereas interlayeredimpure silicate ores bear various proportions of spessartine,Mn3+-bearing andraditecalderite and andradite garnets, rhodonite, manganoan aegirineaugite, aegirine, BaKNa-feldspars,barite and rare kinoshitalite. Petrological constraints derivedfrom country rock lithologies indicate peak metamorphic conditionsof 660700C at estimated pressures of 3545 kbar.Numerous Ba-rich pegmatitic veins restricted to the ore horizonstestify to the production of partial melts from siliciclasticstrata within the manganese formations. They are correlatedwith peak pressure conditions between 5 and 6 kbar, accompanyingthe main deformation event and pre-dating the thermal peak.An early H2O-rich generation of fluid inclusions is interpretedas a manifestation of prograde dehydration reactions in theore horizons. This caused hydraulic fracturing of the ores and, subsequently, triggered the formation of partial melts whichintruded the fracture planes in situ. Peak metamorphism thenoccurred under strainfree conditions allowing equilibrium recrystallizationof all minerals to develop. Phase relationships of manganeseoxides and silicates modelled in the system MnFeSiOreveal variable chemical compositions of braunites, jacobsitesand haematites depending on their paragenesis. They indicatevery restricted oxygen reservoirs within specific strata ofthe manganese ores and eliminate a prominent mass exchange evenon a small scale. This is supported by 18O analyses of silicateassemblages which further exclude mass transfer between manganeseores and country rocks, and indicate preservation of the exchangeequilibria during cooling. The uplift path of the sequence canbe constrained using different decrepitation patterns of H2Ofluid inclusions and a syn-to late-metamorphic CO2-rich fluidinclusion population, which indicate high geothermal gradientsof 70C/km and more. The PTD evolution of thishigh-Tlow-P metamorphic belt conforms with the palaeotectonicsetting of the study area at the southernmost part of the CongoCraton, representing the continental buttress colliding withthe Kalahari Craton during the Pan-African orogeny. Melting Experiments on a Sanidine Phlogopite Lamproite at 4-7 GPa and their Bearing on the Sources of Lamproitic Magmas 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Suprasolidus phase relations at pressures from 4 to 7 GPa andtemperatures from 1000 to 1700C have been determined experimentallyfor a sanidine phlogopite lamproite from North Table Mountain,Leucite Hills, Wyoming. The lamproite is silica rich and hasbeen postulated to be representative of the magmas which wereparental to the Leucite Hills volcanic field. Near-liquidusphases above 5 GPa are pyrope-rich garnet and jadeite-rich pyroxene.Below 5 GPa, jadeite-poor pyroxene is the only near-liquidusphase. Near-solidus assemblages consist of clinopyroxene, titanianpotassium richterite and titanian phlogopite with either potassiumtitanian silicate above 5 GPa or potassium feldspar below 5GPa. The potassium titanian silicate is a newly recognized high-pressurephase ranging in composition from K4Ti2Si7O20 to K4TiSi8O20.It coexists with coesite at pressures above 6 GPa at 11001400C.A previously unrecognized K-Ba-phosphate is a common near-solidusphase. The phase relationships are interpreted to suggest thatlamproites cannot be derived by the partial melting of simplelherzolitic sources. However, it is proposed that sanidine phlogopitelamproites an derived by high degrees of partial melting ofancient metasomatic veins within a harzburgiticlherzoliticlithospheric substrate mantle. The veins are considered to consistof phlogopite, KTi-richterite, KBa-phosphate andKTi-silicates. KEY WORDS: lamproilte; experimental petrology; upper mantle

Decoupling of the Sm-Nd and Re-Os Isotopic Systems in Sulphide-Saturated Magmas in the Halls Creek Orogen, Western Australia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have observed apparent decoupling of the ReOs andSmNd isotopic systems in sulphide-saturated magmas thatsuggests that bulk two-component or assimilationfractionalcrystallization (AFC) mixing modelling, based on ReOsisotopic data, is inappropriate for chalcophile isotopic systemsin turbulent sulphide-saturated magmas. This behaviour is observedin three Palaeoproterozic layered maficultramafic intrusionsin the Halls Creek Orogen of Western Australia. All intrusionsclearly have a basaltic parental magma based on primitive olivineand spinel compositions. The intrusions are light rare earthelement enriched and define a narrow range of initial Nd-isotopicsignatures ( 相似文献

Episodic Silicic Volcanism in Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula: Chronology of Magmatism Associated with the Break-up of Gondwana 总被引:10,自引:2,他引:8
New SHRIMP UPb zircon, RbSr whole-rock, and 40Ar39Ardata are presented for the Jurassic silicic volcanic rocks andrelated granitoids of Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula.UPb is the only reliable method for dating crystallizationin these rocks; RbSr is prone to hydrothermal resettingand ArAr is additionally affected by initial excess 40Ar.Volcanism spanned more than 30 My, but three episodes are definedon the basis of peak activity: V1 (188178 Ma), V2 (172162Ma) and V3 (157153 Ma). The first essentially coincideswith the KarooFerrar mafic magmatism of South Africa,Antarctica and Tasmania. The silicic products of V1 are lower-crustalmelts that have incorporated upper-crustal material. The geochemistryof V2 and V3 ignimbrites is more characteristic of destructiveplate margins, but the presence of inherited zircon still pointsto a crustal source. The pattern of volcanism corresponds inspace and in time to migration away from the Karoo mantle plumetowards the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwana during riftingand break-up. The heat required to initiate bulk crustal fusionmay have been supplied by the spreading plume-head, but thinningof the crust during continental dispersion would also have facilitatedanatexis. P-T Evolution of a Variscan Lower-Crustal Segment: a Study of Granulites from the Schwarzwald, Germany 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Pressuretemperaturetime (PTt) pathsof orogenic granulites provide important information on thethermal and chemical structure of the lower continental crustthrough time, and constraints on tectonic processes. We presentthe first detailed petrological investigation of granulitesfrom the Variscan Schwarzwald. Pelitic granulites from the CentralSchwarzwald Gneiss Complex (CSGC) are characterized by the peakassemblage garnet + rutile + kyanite + antiperthite ±quartz. Felsic to intermediate granulites from the SouthernSchwarzwald Gneiss Complex (SSGC) exhibit different peak assemblageswith clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, ternary feldspar, garnet, quartz and sillimanite, and manifold retrograde reaction textures.Peak PT conditions were calculated by two-feldspar thermometry, garnetorthopyroxene thermometry and various geobarometers.Minimum estimates for peak conditions are 9501010°Cand 1·41·8 GPa for the granulites of theCSGC, which followed a clockwisePT path. The retrogradepath is characterized by initial isothermal decompression, associatedwith partial melting, followed by isobaric cooling. Peak conditionsfor the SSGC are 1015°C and 1·5 GPa (minimum temperature, maximum pressure). No prograde relics are preserved, and isothermaldecompression was less pronounced than in the CSGC. Other VariscanHPHT granulites from Central Europe show similar lithologies, equilibration temperatures and ages (340335 Ma). Theheat for widespread high-temperature metamorphism in the Variscanlower crust could have been supplied by repeated intrusion ofsubduction-related basic magmas. Rapid, near-isothermal decompressionof the granulites may have been facilitated by considerablevolumes of partial melt and by orogenic extension. Petrology of Whiteschists and Associated Rocks at Mautia Hill (Tanzania): Fluid Infiltration during High-Grade Metamorphism? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Talckyanite schists (whiteschists), magnesiohornblendekyanitetalcquartzschists and enstatitesapphirinechlorite schistsoccur at Mautia Hill in the East African Orogen of Tanzania. They are associated with metapelites and garnetclinopyroxenequartzmetabasites. Geobarometry (GASP/GADS equilibria) applied tothe latter two rock types indicates a peak pressure of P = 1011kbar. These results are confirmed by the high fO2 assemblagehollanditekyanitequartz and late-stage manganianandalusite that contains up to 19·5 mol. % Mn2SiO5. Maximumtemperatures of T = 720°C are inferred from late-stage yoderite+ quartz. A clockwise PT evolution is constrained byprograde kyanite inclusions in metapelitic garnet and late-stagereaction rims of cordierite between green yoderite and talcthat reflect conditions at least 34 kbar below the peakpressure. Oxidizing conditions are recorded throughout the metamorphichistory of the whiteschists and chlorite schists, as indicatedby the presence of haematite coexisting with pseudobrookiteand/or rutile. Increasing water activity near peak pressuresis thought to have led to the breakdown of the high-pressureassemblages (TlcKyHem and Mg-HblKyHem)and the subsequent formation of certain uncommon minerals, e.g.yellow sapphirine, Mnandalusite, green and purple yoderite, piemontite and boron-free kornerupine. The proposed increasein water activity is attributed to fluid infiltration resultingfrom the devolatilization of underlying sediments during metamorphism. Prograde and Retrograde Evolution in High-temperature Corundum Granulites (FMAS and KFMASH Systems) from In Ouzzal Terrane (NW Hoggar, Algeria) 总被引:5,自引:5,他引:5
The mineralogy and phase relationships of corundum-bearing granulitesfrom In Ouzzal (Hoggar, Algeria) are analysed within the contextof the present knowledge of In Ouzzal metamorphism, as independentlydeduced from quartz-bearing rocks: a clockwise evolution characterizedby peak temperatures ranging from 850°C to more than 1100°Cat about 10 kbar, followed by decompression and cooling to about5 kbar and 750°C. The corundum-bearing rocks have been dividedinto three types (AB, C and D) according to their mineralogy.Type AB is characterized by the occurrence of sapphirinesillimaniteorthopyroxenephlogopitewith or without garnet, Type C by the occurrence of spinelsapphirinegarnet, and Type D by the occurrence of garnetspinelsillimanite.Thermodynamic data for sapphirine have been adjusted from thecurrent THERMOCALC dataset to fit in with available experimentaldata and current theoretical phase diagrams. MAS, KMASH, FMASand KFMASH petrogenetic grids that connect quartz-present andcorundum-present grids are presented. Pseudosections derivedfrom these grids account well for the observed textures. Thethree types of rock agree with the decompression path experiencedby the quartz-bearing rocks. The occurrence of sapphirine correspondsto peak and decompression conditions, and trends of sapphirineand orthopyroxene compositions are consistent with this evolution. U-Pb Age, Setting and Tectonic Significance of the Anorthosite-Mangerite-Charnockite-Granite Suite, Lofoten-Vesteralen, Norway 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mangerites, charnockites, anorthosites, gabbros and granitesoccur within a high-grade metamorphic complex in the LofotenVesterålenislands of northern Norway. UPb dating of zircon, titaniteand monazite indicates a three-stage magmatic history beginningat 18701860 Ma with the emplacement of the Lødingenand Hopen plutons, followed by a dominant stage at 18001790Ma that formed the bulk of the suite, and concluded by the emplacementof pegmatites, local rehydration and retrogression between 1790and 1770 Ma. On the scale of the Baltic Shield the 18701860Ma episode corresponds to contraction, amalgamation of arcs, and regional deformation. By contrast, the episode at 18001790Ma was characterized by major shifts in plate convergence, byintraplate deformation, and by a diversity of magmatic associationsincluding suites derived from the subcontinental mantle andwidespread granitoid rocks extracted from the continental crust. The diversity of concurrent magmatic events across the Svecofennianorogen, and the temporal coincidence with collisional eventsin coeval orogenic belts, suggests that the genesis of the suiteof magmatic rocks may have been related to tectonically drivenmechanisms of magma generation. Processes in High-Mg, High-T Magmas: Evidence from Olivine, Chromite and Glass in Palaeogene Picrites from West Greenland 总被引:15,自引:1,他引:14
Uncontaminated volcanic rocks from the 60 Ma Vaigat Formation,West Greenland, contain 6·530 wt % MgO, averaging15·5 wt % MgO. Olivine (mg-number 77·493·3)forms diverse assemblages of zoned phenocrysts and xenocrystsshowing evidence for equilibrium and fractional crystallization, oxidation, partial to complete re-equilibration, as well asmagma mixing. The olivine crystals contain glass inclusionsand have high contents of Ca and Cr, indicating that all olivineswith up to mg-number 93·0 crystallized from melts. Associatedchromites (mg-number 45·477·2) are essentiallyunzoned and in equilibrium with the olivines. Matrix glassesfrom pillow breccias have 6·78·8 wt % MgOand quenched close to 1200°C with oxidation states one log-unitabove the NNO (nickelnickel oxide) buffer. The AntampombatoAmbatovy complex is the largest intrusionin the centraleastern part of the Cretaceous flood basaltprovince of Madagascar, with an exposed surface area of about80 km2. It has an 40Ar/39Ar incremental heating age of 89·9± 0·4 Ma and a UPb age of 90 ± 2Ma. The outcropping plutonic rocks range from dunite and wehrlite, through clinopyroxenite and gabbro, to sodic syenite. A dykeswarm cross-cutting some of the above lithologies (and the nearbyPrecambrian basement rocks) is formed of picritic basalts, alkalito transitional basalts, benmoreites and rhyolites; some ofthe latter are peralkaline. A few basaltic dykes have cumulateolivine textures, with up to 26 wt % MgO and 1200 ppm Ni, whereasothers have characteristics more akin to those of primitiveliquids (9 wt % MgO; Mg-number 0·61; 500 ppm Cr; 200ppm Ni). These basalts have relatively high TiO2 (2·2wt %) and total iron (14 wt % as Fe2O3), and moderate contentsof Nb (1011 ppm) and Zr (c. 100 ppm). Initial (at 90Ma) Sr- and Nd-isotope ratios of the clinopyroxenites and basaltdykes are 0·70300·7037 and 0·512900·51283,respectively. Syenites and peralkaline rhyolites have Sr- andNd-isotope ratios of 0·70370·7039 and 0·512710·51274,respectively. The data suggest derivation of the parental magmasfrom a time-integrated depleted mantle source, combined withsmall amounts of crustal contamination in the petrogenesis ofthe more evolved magmas. The isotopic compositions of the maficultramaficrocks are most similar to those of the mid-ocean ridge basalt(MORB)-like igneous rocks of eastern Madagascar, and suggestthe existence of an isotopically depleted componentin the source of the entire Madagascar province, even thoughthe Antampombato basalts are chemically unlike the lavas anddykes with the same depleted isotopic signature found in westernMadagascar. If this depleted component is plume-related, thissuggests that the plume has a broadly MORB-source mantle composition. The existence of isotopically more enriched magma types in theMadagascan province has several possible petrogenetic explanations, one of which could be the interaction of plume-related meltswith the deep lithospheric mantle beneath the island. Garnet Lherzolites from the Kaapvaal Craton (South Africa): Trace Element Evidence for a Metasomatic History 总被引:12,自引:9,他引:12
Kimberlites from the Kaapvaal craton have sampled numerous mantlegarnet lherzolites in addition to garnet harzburgites. Traceelement characteristics of constituent clinopyroxenes allowtwo groups of garnet lherzolites to be distinguished. Traceelement compositions of all clinopyroxenes are characterizedby enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREE) and largeion lithophile elements and by a relative depletion in Ti, Nb,Ta, and to a lesser extent Zr and Hf. However, the LREE enrichmentand the depletion in Nb and Zr (Hf) are less in the Type 1 clinopyroxenesthan in the Type 2 clinopyroxenes. Our study suggests that thetwo melts responsible for the metasomatic imprints observedin the two garnet lherzolite groups are highly alkaline maficsilicate melts. Type 1 clinopyroxenes that have trace elementsimilarities to those of PIC (PhlogopiteIlmeniteClinopyroxene)rocks appear to have crystallized from, or been completely equilibratedwith, the same melt related to Group I kimberlite magma. TheType 2 clinopyroxenes have trace element similarities to thoseof MARID (Mica AmphiboleRutileIlmeniteDiopside)rocks and are therefore probably linked to melt related to GroupII kimberlite magma. Analyses from the literature, as well as new in-houseanalyses, all pertaining to core compositions of first-generation,garnet lherzolite minerals, have been selected for thermobarometriccalculations. The PT data obtained for the three knowngarnet lherzolite occurrences in the Central Alps are tightlyconstrained, consistent with one another, and summarized asfollows: Alpe Arami, 3·2 GPa and 840°C; Monte Duria,3·0 GPa and 830°C; Cima di Gagnone, 3·0 GPaand 740°C. These values are consistent with experimentaldata on pargasite stability and composition in peridotitic systems. Our PT estimates, along with microstructural and fieldgeological observations, indicate that the garnet lherzoliteparageneses form part of the prograde, Alpine, high-pressuremetamorphic sequence of the AdulaCima Lunga unit. Spinel granulites, with or without sapphirine, occur as lensesin garnetiferous quartzofeldspathic gneisses (leptynites) nearGokavaram in the Eastern Ghats Belt, India. Spinel granulitesare mineralogically heterogeneous and six mineral associationsoccur in closely spaced domains. These are (I) spinelquartzcordierite,(II) spinelquartzcordieritegarnetorthopyroxenesillimanite,(III) spinelcordieriteorthopyroxenesillimanite,(IV) spinelquartzsapphirinesillimanitegarnet,(V) spinelquartz-sapphirinegarnet and (IV) rhombohedral(FeTi) oxidecordieriteorthopyroxenesillimanite.Common to all the associations are a porphyroblastic garnet(containing an internal schistosify defined by biotite, sillimaniteand quartz), perthite and plagioclase. Spinel contains variableamounts of exsolved magnetite and is distinctly Zn rich in thesapphirine-absent associations. XMg in the coexisting phasesdecreases in the order cordieritebiotitesapphirineorthopyroxenespinelgarnet(FeTi)oxides. Textural criteria and compositional characteristicsof the phases document several retrograde mineral reactionswhich occurred subsequent to prograde dehydration melting reactionsinvolving biotite, sillimanite, quartz, plagioclase and spinel. The following retrograde mineral reactions are deduced: (1)spinel + quartz cordierite, (2) spinel + quartz garnet + sillimanite,(3) garnet + quartz cordierite + orthopyroxene, (4) garnet+ quartz + sillimanite cordierite, (5) spinel + cordierite orthopyroxene + sillimanite, (6) spinel + sillimanite + quartz sapphirine, (7) spinel + sapphirine + quartz garnet + sillimanite, and (8) spinel + quartz sapphirine + garnet. A partial petrogeneticgrid for the system FeOMgOAl2O3SiO2K2OH2Oat high fo2, has been constructed and the effects of ZnO andFe2O3 on this grid have been explored Combining available experimentaland natural occurrence data, the high fo2 invariant points inthe partial grid have been located in PT space. Geothermobarometricdata and consideration of the deduced mineral reactions in thepetrogenetic grid show that the spinel granulites evolved throughan anticlockwise PT trajectory reaching peak metamorphicconditions >9 kbar and 950C, followed by near-isobaric cooling(dT/dP = 150C/kbar). This was superimposed by an event of near-isothermaldecompression (dT/dP = 15C/kbar). The studied spinel granulites, therefore, preserve relic prograde mineral associations andreaction textures despite being metamorphosed at very high temperatures, and bear evidence of polymetamorphism. Mantle-derived xenoliths are principallyspinel-bearing lherzolites (Fo89·890·6CpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·070·45:0·701·70:0·010·94OpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·160·19:1·621·75:0·010·10)but also include amphibole ± spinel-bearing lherzolite(Fo88·789·1 CpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·090·21:0·610·91:0·730·93OpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·090·31:0·701·54:0·030·91),spinel-bearing harzburgite (Fo90·590·7CpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·08:0·910·93:0·740·84OpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·160·18:1·731·79:0·000·02),wehrlite, pyroxenite (CpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·080·10:0·840·90:0·800·85OpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·160·33:1·511·73:0·020·03)and rare garnet pyroxenite (GtFe:Mg:Ca 0·830·95:1·601·70:0·450·48CpxFe:Mg:Ca 0·140·21:0·690·77:0·780·86Opx Fe:Mg:Ca 0·310·42:1·431·56:0·020·03)and amphiboleapatite composites. Xenolith textures aregenerally weakly to moderately foliated, a few are mosaic-porphyroblasticand rare samples are veined or highly strained. MVP xenolithsappear to have equilibrated under similar pressuretemperature(PT) conditions to other southeastern Australian xenolithsequivalent to the South Eastern Australia (SEA) palaeogeotherm.PT estimates for the MVP suite of xenoliths reveal aheterogeneous lower crust and upper mantle that is thickly underplatedto c. 1·8 GPa or c. 50 km depth. MVP xenolith PTdata are compared with those used to derive the SEA palaeogeotherm, which is shown to be in need of revision using more modern geothermometersand geobarometers and new xenolith coexisting mineral data.
