We used the nitrogen isotope ratio of algae, suspended particles and nitrate in the water column to track spatial variations in the marine nitrogen cycle in the Mediterranean Sea. Surface PON (5–74 m) was more depleted in 15N in the eastern basin (−0.3±0.5‰) than in the western basin (+2.4±1.4‰), suggesting that nitrogen supplied by biological N2 fixation may be an important source of new nitrogen in the eastern basin, where preformed nitrate from the Atlantic Ocean could have been depleted during its transit eastward. The δ15N of nitrate in the deep Mediterranean (∼3‰ in the western-most Mediterranean and decreasing toward the east) is significantly lower than nitrate at similar depths from the North Atlantic (4.8–5‰), also suggesting an important role for N2 fixation. The eastward decrease in the δ15N of surface PON is greater than the eastward decrease in the δ15N of the subsurface nitrate, implying that the amount of N2 fixation in the eastern Mediterranean is great enough to cause a major divergence in the δ15N of phytoplankton biomass from the δ15N of the nitrate upwelled from below. Variations in productivity associated with frontal processes, including shoaling of the nitracline, did not lead to detectable variations in the δ15N of PON. This indicates that no differential fertilization or productivity gradient occurred in the Almerian/Oran area. Our results are consistent with a lack of gradient in chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and nitrate concentration in the Alboran Sea. 15N enrichment in particles below 500 m depth was detected in the Alboran Sea with respect to surface PON, reaching an average value of +7.4±0.7‰. The δ15N in sinking particles caught at 100 m depth (4.9–5.6‰) was intermediate between suspended surface and suspended deep particles. We found a consistent difference in the isotopic composition of nitrogen in PON compared with that of chlorophyll (Δδ15N[PON-chlorin]=+6.4±1.4‰) in the surface, similar to the offset reported earlier in cultures for cellular N and chl-a. This indicates that δ15N of phytoplankton biomass was retained in surface PON, and that alteration of the isotopic signal of PON at depth was due to heterotrophic activity.  相似文献

The stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) of the muscle, ctenidia and viscera of the Sydney rock oyster, Saccostrea glomerata, showed the dilution and assimilation of tertiary treated sewage along an estuarine gradient. The enriched 15N values of oyster ctenidia and viscera from within 50 m of the sewage outfall indicated the use of 15N-enriched tertiary treated sewage effluent (16 ± 2.3‰) as a nutrient source. The effect of sewage nitrogen on oyster δ15N was localised, with oysters 5 km upstream and downstream of the outfall not significantly enriched. Viscera δ15N was most sensitive to sewage nutrients and δ13C significantly defined an ocean-to-estuarine gradient. High variance in isotope ratios of viscera compromised its use as an indicator of anthropogenic nutrients, and this also reduced the utility of whole-body stable isotope ratios. Ctenidia was the most useful indicator tissue of sewage discharge at the scale of this study, being consistently and significantly enriched in δ15N close to the sewage outfall and δ13C clearly defined an estuarine gradient with less internal variability than viscera. Muscle δ15N was least sensitive to sewage effluent and showed the least variability, making it more suited to investigations of anthropogenic nutrient enrichment over larger spatio-temporal scales.  相似文献

An 8-year record of N fluxes and δ15N of sinking particles from the deep southern Bay of Bengal, northern Indian Ocean, is presented. Fluxes and δ15N vary between ∼0.1 and 3 mg m−2 day−1 and ∼2‰ and 8‰, respectively. The seasonal variation is determined mainly by oceanographic processes coupled to the Indian monsoon system. The annual pattern of δ15N is characterized by minima during spring intermonsoon (∼March–May), when nutrient inputs to the euphotic zone should be low because of stratification, and lighter nitrate/particulate matter is expected to be advected from the central Bay. Highest δ15N are associated with peak fluxes during southwest monsoon (∼June–September), when the southern Bay comes under the influence of the SW monsoon current, which appears to advect particulate matter with distinctly higher δ15N. The impact of this process, however, varies interannually under the influence of factors such as ENSO and the Indian Dipole Mode. Weakened advection leads to relatively low N fluxes and reduced δ15N. The data highlight the necessity of multi-annual studies to comprehend the natural variability of a system.  相似文献

We analyzed the stable nitrogen isotope composition of an extensive set of samples of particulate matter (PM) and seawater nitrate collected during October/November 1997 along the Mexican coastline from 24° to 11.5°N. At the northern and southern end of our study area, the δ15N of PM ranged between 5 and 7‰ in the upper 200 m of the water column with higher values at intermediate depths. These data are very similar to those reported from other parts of the open ocean. In the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), we found significantly higher δ15N values for suspended particles. Furthermore, the δ15N of nitrate (NO3) was elevated within the OMZ and we found a strong relationship between the oxygen concentration, nitrate deficit and the 15N content of the nitrate. The core of the OMZ between 22°N, 105°W and 15°N, 110°W coincided with higher nitrate deficits and δ15N values relative to the stations near the boundaries. The δ15N of nitrate was highest, with values up to 18.7‰, where oxygen concentrations were below 1–2 μmol/l. This pattern is consistent with an overall nitrogen isotopic enrichment factor of 22.5‰ for denitrification in the core of the OMZ using the Rayleigh equation (closed-system approach). Results from a diffusion model (open-system approach), however, gave a fractionation factor of 30±7.5‰, implying that the Rayleigh formula only gives a lower estimate of the fractionation factor ε. The vertical flux of particles collected in short-term deployments (ca. 35 h) of a drifting sediment trap was not significantly correlated with the water column nitrate deficit. The isotopic signature of the nitrate within the gradient is very similar to the δ15N value of sedimenting particles, suggesting that there might be a strong link between the production and sedimentation of particles. Upward flux of nitrate across the thermocline can account for less than half of the particle flux leaving the mixed layer. Mixing and transport of nitrate across the lower boundary of the OMZ can lead to significant enrichment in the 15N content of deep waters, and our isotopic data imply that at least 14% of the nitrate in the waters below the OMZ originates from this source.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the changes in the elemental and stable isotope composition of Zostera noltii leaves during the early phases of decay. The litter biomass, the C, N and S elemental contents, the C:N ratios and the δ13C, δ15N and δ34S values were monitored in a litterbag experiment for 60 days at Ria Formosa lagoon, southern Portugal in two different field conditions, permanently submerged in a salt marsh pond and at high intertidal. The elemental and stable isotope composition of both attached leaves and leaf wrack of Z. noltii was also determined. The overall decay rate of Z. noltii leaf material throughout the whole experimental period was k = 0.016 ± 0.001 d−1. Even though the biomass loss of the Z. noltii leaves after 30 days was about 25% higher within the pond than at the high intertidal, at the end of the experiment there were no significant differences between sites. The decay of the C and N content was of the same magnitude and thus the C:N molar ratio did not vary significantly in the experiment. The elemental content of the leaf wrack was in the range of the element content of leaf litter after 30–60 days of incubation. Contrary to other vascular plants rich in lignin, which degrades slowly, and thus forces the decrease of the δ13C values during decay, the δ13C values of Z. noltii leaves did not vary significantly over time or between incubation sites. The δ15N values of leaves did not increase as has been reported for vascular plants with high C:N ratio. This suggests that during the early phase of the Z. noltii decomposition the community of decomposers relied mostly on the endogenous nitrogen of the plants, not needing to immobilize exogenous N. Stable isotope studies to assess the contribution of this species to the food web can rely on the natural δ13C and δ15N abundances of living tissues without any correction to account for decomposition. The analysis of the δ34S values of Z. noltii detritus was not useful probably due to the contamination of the samples with pyrite, which has a depleted δ34S signal.  相似文献

Atmospheric dry deposition of nitrogen (N) and dinitrogen (N2) fixation rates were assessed in 2004 at the time-series DYFAMED station (northwestern Mediterranean, 43°25′N, 7°52′E). The atmospheric input was monitored over the whole year. Dinitrogen fixation was measured during different seasonal trophic states (from mesotrophy to oligotrophy) sampled during nine cruises. The bioavailability of atmospherically deposited nutrients was estimated by apparent solubility after 96 h. The solubility of dry atmospheric N deposition was highly variable (from ∼18% to more than 96% of total N). New N supplied to surface waters by the dry atmospheric deposition was mainly nitrate (NO3) (∼57% of total N, compared to ∼6% released as ammonium (NH4+)). The mean bioavailable dry flux of total N was estimated to be ∼112 μmol m−2 d−1 over the whole year. The NO3 contribution (70 μmol NO3 m−2 d−1) was much higher than the NH4+ contribution (1.2 μmol NH4+ m−2 d−1). The N:P ratios in the bioavailable fraction of atmospheric inputs (122.5–1340) were always much higher than the Redfield N:P ratio (16). Insoluble N in atmospheric dry deposition (referred to as “organic” and believed to be strongly related to anthropogenic emissions) was ∼40 μmol m−2 d−1. N2 fixation rates ranged from 2 to 7.5 nmol L−1 d−1. The highest values were found in August, during the oligotrophic period (7.5 nmol L−1 at 10 m depth), and in April, during the productive period (4 nmol L−1 d−1 at 10 m depth). Daily integrated values of N2 fixation ranged from 22 to 100 μmol N m−2 d−1, with a maximum of 245 μmol N m−2 d−1 in August. No relationship was found between the availability of phosphorus or iron and the observed temporal variability of N2 fixation rates. The atmospheric dry deposition and N2 fixation represented 0.5–6% and 1–20% of the total biological nitrogen demand, respectively. Their contribution to new production was more significant: 1–28% and 2–55% for atmospheric dry deposition and N2 fixation, respectively. The dry atmospheric input was particularly significant in conditions of water column stratification (16–28% of new production), while N2 fixation reached its highest values in June (46% of new production) and in August (55%).  相似文献

Previous work has shown that methane anomalies frequently occur within the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The plumes appear confined within the high, steep walls of the valley, and it is not known whether methane may escape to the open ocean outside. In order to investigate this question, the concentration and 13C/12C ratio of methane together with CCl3F concentration were measured in the northeastern Atlantic including the rift valley near 50°N. This segment contained methane plumes centered several 100 m above the valley floor with δ13C values mostly between –15‰ and –10‰. A limited number of helium isotope measurements showed that δ3He increased to 17% at the bottom of the valley, which suggests the helium and methane sources may be spatially separated. In the eastern Atlantic away from the ridge (48°N, 20°W), the methane concentration decreased monotonically from the surface to the bottom, but the methane δ13C exhibited a mid-water maximum of about –25‰. The bottom water methane contained a significantly lower δ13C of about –36‰. Thus, it appears that isotopically heavy methane escapes from the MAR into North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) that contacts the ridge crest while circulating to the east. The formation of NADW supplies isotopically light methane that dilutes the input of heavy carbon from the ridge. We employed a time-dependent box model to calculate the extent of isotope dilution and thereby the flux of MAR methane into the NADW circulation. The degree of methane oxidation, which affects the 13C/12C of methane through kinetic isotope fractionation, was estimated by comparing methane and CFC-11 model results with observations. The model calculations indicate a MAR methane source of about 0.06×10−9 mol L−1 yr−1 to waters at the depth of the ridge crest. Assuming this extends to a 500 m thick layer over half of the entire Atlantic, the amount of methane escaping from the MAR to the open ocean is estimated to be about 1×109 mol yr−1. The total production of methane within the rift valley is likely much greater than the flux from the valley to the outside because of local oxidation. This implies that serpentinization of ultramafic rocks supports much of methane production in the rift valley because the amount expected from basalt degassing in association with mantle helium (<0.6×109 mol CH4 yr−1) is less than even the net amount escaping from the valley. The model results also indicate the methane specific oxidation rate is about 0.05 yr−1 in open waters of the northern Atlantic.  相似文献

By transforming fixed nitrogen (N) into nitrogen gas, the biochemical processes that support denitrification provide a function critical to maintaining the integrity of ecosystems subjected to increased loading of N from anthropogenic sources. The Louisiana coastal region receives high nitrate (NO3?) concentrations (> 100 µM) from the Mississippi–Ohio–Missouri River Basin and is also an area undergoing high rates of wetland loss. Ongoing and anticipated changes in the Louisiana coastal region promise to alter biogeochemical cycles including the net rate of denitrification by ecosystems. Projecting what these changes could mean for coastal water quality and natural resources requires an understanding of the magnitude and patterns of variation in denitrification rates and their connection to estuarine water quality at large temporal and spatial scales under current conditions. We compile and review denitrification rates reported in 32 studies conducted in a variety of habitats across coastal Louisiana during the period 1981– 2008. The acetylene inhibition and 15N flux were the preferred techniques (95%); most of the studies used sediment slurries rather than intact sediment cores. There are no estimates of denitrification rates using the N2/Ar ratio and isotope pairing techniques, which address some of the problems and limitations of the acetylene inhibition and 15N flux techniques. These studies have shown that sediments from estuaries, lakes, marshes, forested wetlands, and the coastal shelf region are capable of high potential denitrification rates when exposed to high NO3? concentrations (> 100 µM). Maximum potential denitrification rates in experimental and natural settings can reach values > 2500 µmol m2 h? 1. The lack of contemporary studies to understand the interactions among critical nitrogen transformations (e.g., organic matter mineralization, immobilization, aquatic plant assimilation, nitrification, nitrogen fixation, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (annamox) limits our understanding of nitrogen cycling in coastal Louisiana, particularly the role of respiratory and chemolithoautotrophic denitrification in areas undergoing wetland restoration.  相似文献

Deep-seafloor communities, especially those from the ice-covered Arctic, are subject to severe food limitation as the amount of particulate organic matter (POM) from the surface is attenuated with increasing depth. Here, we use naturally occurring stable isotope tracers (δ15N) to broaden our rudimentary knowledge of food web structure and the response of benthic organisms to decreasing food supplies along the bathymetric transect (~1300–5600 m water depth) of the deep-sea observatory HAUSGARTEN. Encompassing five trophic levels, the HAUSGARTEN food web is among the longest indicating continuous recycling of organic material typical of food-limited deep-sea ecosystems. The δ15N signatures ranged from 3.0‰ for Foraminifera to 21.4‰ (±0.4) for starfish (Poraniomorpha tumida). The majority of organisms occupied the second and third trophic level. Demersal fish fed at the third trophic level, consistent with results from stomach contents analysis. There were significant differences in the δ15N signatures of different functional groups with highest δ15N values in predators/scavengers (13.2±0.2‰) followed by suspension feeders (11.2±0.2‰) and deposit feeders (10.2±0.3‰). Depth (=increasing food limitation) affected functional groups in different ways. While the isotopic signatures of predators/scavengers did not change, those of suspension feeders increased with depth, and the reverse was found for deposit feeders. In contrast to the results of other studies, the δ15N signatures in POM samples obtained below 800 m did not vary significantly with depth indicating that changes in δ15N values are unlikely to be responsible for the depth-related δ15N signature changes observed for benthic consumers. However, the δ15N signatures of sediments decreased with increasing depth, which also explains the decrease found for deposit feeders. Suspension feeders may rely increasingly on particles trickling down the HAUSGARTEN slope and carrying higher δ15N signatures than the decreasing POM supplies, which elevates the δ15N value of their tissues. Our results imply that a depth-stratified approach should be taken to avoid a misinterpretation of data obtained at different depths.  相似文献

We observed the origin, behavior, and flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the subterranean estuary of a volcanic island, Jeju, Korea. The sampling of surface seawater and coastal groundwater was conducted in Hwasun Bay, Jeju, in three sampling campaigns (October 2010, January 2011, and June 2011). We observed conservative mixing of these components in this subterranean environment for a salinity range from 0 to 32. The fresh groundwater was characterized by relatively high DON, DIN, and CDOM, while the marine groundwater showed relatively high DOC. The DON and DIN fluxes through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the groundwater of Hwasun Bay were estimated to be 1.3 × 105 and 2.9 × 105 mol d 1, respectively. In the seawater of Hwasun Bay, the groundwater-origin DON was almost conservative while about 91% of the groundwater-origin DIN was removed perhaps due to biological production. The DON flux from the entire Jeju was estimated to be 7.9 × 108 mol yr 1, which is comparable to some of the world's large rivers. Thus, our study highlights that DON flux through SGD is potentially important for delivery of organic nitrogen to further offshore while DIN is readily utilized by marine plankton in near-shore waters under N-limited conditions.  相似文献

Understanding the role of the oceans in the Earth's changing climate requires comprehension of the relevant metabolic pathways which produce climatically important trace gases. The global ocean represents one of the largest natural sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) that is produced by selected archaea and/or bacteria during nitrogen (N) metabolism. In this study, the role of nitrite (NO2) in the production of N2O in the upper water column of the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre was investigated, focusing primarily on the lower euphotic zone where NO2 concentrations at the primary NO2 maximum reached 195 nmol L−1. Free-drifting sediment trap arrays were deployed to measure N cycle processes in sinking particulate material and the addition of selected N substrates to unpreserved sediment traps provided an experimental framework to test hypotheses regarding N2O production pathways and controls. Sinking particles collected using NO2-amended, unpreserved sediment traps exhibited significant production of N2O at depths between 100 and 200 m. Subsequent stable isotope tracer measurements conducted on sediment trap material amended with 15NO2 yielded elevated δ15N values of N2O, supporting N2O production via a NO2 metabolism pathway. Experiments on seawater collected from 150 m showed N2O production via NO2 metabolism also occurs in the water-column and indicated that the concentration of NO2 relative to NH4+ availability may be an important control. These findings provide evidence for the production of N2O via nitrifer-denitrification in the lower euphotic zone of the open ocean, whereby NO2 is reduced to N2O by ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms.  相似文献

Sea-ice and water samples were collected at 14 stations on the shelves and slope regions of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas during the spring 2002 expedition as part of the Shelf–Basin Interaction Studies. Algal pigment content, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, and primary productivity were estimated for both habitats based on ice cores, brine collection and water samples from 5-m depth. The pigment content (0.2–304.3 mg pigments m−2) and primary productivity (0.1–23.0 mg C m−3 h−1) of the sea-ice algae significantly exceeded water-column parameters (0.2 and 1.0 mg pigments m−3; <0.1–0.4 mg C m−3 h−1), making sea ice the habitat with the highest food availability for herbivores in early spring in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Stable isotope signatures for ice and water samples did not differ significantly for δ15N, but for δ13C (ice: −25.1‰ to −14.2‰; water: −26.1‰ to −22.4‰). The analysis of nutrient concentrations and the pulse-amplitude-modulated fluorescence signal of ice algae and phytoplankton indicate that nutrients were the prime limiting factor for sea-ice algal productivity. The estimated spring primary production of about 1–2 g C m−2 of sea-ice algae on the shelves requires the use of substantial nutrient reservoirs from the water column.  相似文献

Surface sediments (10 cm) of the subtropical Pearl River estuary and adjacent shelf, Southern China were collected. Fatty acids and compound-specific carbon isotopic analyses were determined to infer their sources and biogeochemical cycle of this lipid in the subtropical Pearl River estuary and adjacent northern South China Sea (SCS). The total concentrations of fatty acids ranged from ∼1.28 to ∼42.25 μg g−1 dry weight. The levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were low (0.2–4.8% of total fatty acids), suggesting that fatty acids derived from algae were effectively recycled during the whole settling and depositing process. Bacterial fatty acids were significantly high and terrigenous fatty acids were low in the sediments. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the data also indicates that a clear separation of the biogeochemical sources can be seen. The δ13C values of bacterial fatty acids, i.e., i/aiC15 (−22.9‰ to −29.4‰) suggest that bacteria within the sediments mainly utilize a labile pool of organic matter derived from algae for their growth in the subtropical Pearl River estuary system.  相似文献

Determinations of the activity of the respiratory electron transport system (ETS), during the FRAM III expedition permit us to estimate oxygen utilization rates (RO2) from the surface to 2000 m under the polar pack ice in the Nansen Basin just north of Svalbard (83°N, 7°E) during April 1981. We found RO2 at in situ temperatures ranging from 20 pM O2 min−1 just below the ice to 0.2 pM O2 min−1 at 2000 m. These rates are low compared to most other ocean regions, but they could decrease particulate organic carbon and nitrogen by 76% and 74%, respectively, over a period of ∼6 months. The RO2 calculations based on measurements made at 0 °C yielded a power function of RO2 vs. depth (Z) of RO2=67Z−0.5534. When this RO2 profile was superimposed on a more recent oxygen utilization rate profile made using the 3He–3H–AOU method (OUR), in the same vicinity of the Nansen Basin during 1987 (OUR=52Z–0.4058, [Zheng, Y., Schlosser, P., Swift, J.W., Jones, E.P., 1997. Oxygen utilization rates in the Nansen Basin, Arctic Ocean: implications for new production. Deep Sea Research I 44, 1923–1943]), the agreement of the two profiles was close. On one hand, this was to be expected because RO2 is the biological basis of OUR, on the other hand, it was a surprise because the methodologies are so different. Nitrate mineralization obtained from ETS activities also compared favorably with calculations based on the data of Zheng et al. [1997. Oxygen utilization rates in the Nansen Basin, Arctic Ocean: implications for new production. Deep Sea Research I 44, 1923–1943]. Chlorophyll ranged from 6 ng L−1 at 5 m to 0.06 ng L−1 at 2000 m. Particulate organic carbon (POC) decreased from 0.93 μM C just below the ice to less than 0.4 μM C at 500 m. Particulate organic nitrogen (PON) was not detectable below 70 m, however in the upper 70 m it ranged from 0.16 to 0.04 μM N. The C/N mass ratio over these depths ranged from 5.8 to 11.3. Annual carbon productivity as calculated to balance the total water column respiration was 27 g C m−2 y−1. The integrated respiration rate between 50 and 4000 m suggests that exported production and carbon flux from the 50 m level was 24 g C m−2 y−1. These are minimal estimates for the southern Nansen Basin because they are based on measurements made at the end of the Arctic winter.  相似文献

Measurements of dissolved gases (O2, N2O), nutrients (NO3, NO2, PO43−), and oceanographic variables were performed off northern Chile (∼21°S) between March 2000 and July 2004, in order to characterize the existing oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) and identify processes involved in N2O cycling. Both N2O and NO3 displayed sharp, shallow peaks with concentrations of up to 124 nM (1370% saturation) and 26 μM, respectively, in association with a strong oxycline that impinges on the euphotic zone. NO2 accumulation below the oxycline's base reached up to 9 μM. The vertical distribution of physical and chemical parameters and the existing relationships between apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), apparent N2O production (ΔN2O), and NO3 revealed three main layers within the upper OMZ. The first layer, or the upper part of the oxycline, is located between the base of the mixed layer and the mid-point of the oxycline (around σt=25.5 kg m−3). There the O2 declines from ∼250 to ∼50 μM, and strong (but opposing) O2 and NO3 gradients and their associated AOU–ΔN2O and AOU–NO3 relationships indicate that nitrification produces N2O and NO3 in the presence of light. The second layer, or lower part of the oxycline, represents the upper OMZ boundary and is located between the middle and the base of the oxycline (25.9<σt<26.1 kg m−3). In this layer NO3 reduction begins at O2 levels ranging from ∼50 to ∼11 μM and accumulation of 41–68% of the ΔN2O pool occurs. The accumulation of N2O (but not of NO2 or NH4+) and the observed AOU–ΔN2O and AOU–NO3 relationships (which are opposite to those of the overlying first layer) suggest that a coupling between nitrification and NO3 reduction is involved in N2O cycling in this second layer. The third layer is the OMZ core, where the O2 concentration remains constant (O2<11 μM). It coincides with σt>26.2 kg m−3, which is typical of Equatorial Subsurface Water (ESSW). In this layer, N2O and NO3 continue to decrease, but a large NO2 accumulation is observed. Considering all the data, a biogeochemical model for the upper OMZ off northern of Chile is proposed, in which nitrification and denitrification differentially mediate N2O cycling in each layer.  相似文献

The giant diatom Ethmodiscus was examined along an east–west transect at 28–30°N during 2002 and 2003 to determine if abundance, chemical composition or physiological status of this largest of diatoms varied on the scale of 100's–1000's of km in North Pacific gyre. Abundance ranged from <0.1–>2.0 cells m−3 and supported the notion of an abundance mosaic reported previously. However, there was only minimal support for the relationship between abundance and nutrient concentration at 125 m reported previously. Cellular chlorophyll varied little along the transect (7.3–10.9 ng chl cell−1) except at the westernmost station. Cellular N and P quotas co-varied 3–4.5 fold (mean=50.8±3.7 and 3.7±0.8 nmol N and P cell−1) and yielded N:P ratios that closely clustered around the Redfield ratio (average=14.6±1.1). Only low levels of chlorophyll-normalized alkaline phosphatase (APase) activity were observed (0.4–2.5 nmol P μg chl−1 h−1) with APase activity lower than that in either the bulk water, or co-occurring Trichodesmium spp. and Pyrocystis noctiluca. The active fluorescence parameter Fv:Fm, a property sensitive to Fe stress, was uniformly high at all stations (average=0.73±0.04 for 2003, and 0.69±0.05 for 2002), indicating sufficient Fe for optimum photosynthetic competence. These results contrasted sharply with results from Rhizosolenia mats reported along the same transect where there was a significant decline westward in Fv:Fm. Both ferredoxin (Fd) and flavodoxin accumulated in cells of Ethmodiscus, resulting in Fd Index values of<0.6. Iron cell quotas ranged from 0.7–5.1 pmol Fe cell−1. When normalized to cytoplasmic volume, the Fe μm−3 was comparable to that of Escherichia coli. We note that the disproportionate contribution of the vacuole (with its high organic content) to total volume typical of large diatoms is a potentially significant source of error in Fe:C ratios and suggest that Fe should be normalized to cytoplasmic volume whenever possible to permit valid intercomparisons between studies. The composition, Fv:Fm data and Fe:C ratio suggest a relatively uniform population experiencing little N, P or Fe stress. The uncoupling of the Fd Index from these measures is consistent with previous findings showing that the expression of flavodoxin can be characterized as an early stress response and that its accumulation is not necessarily correlated with physiological deficit. Ethmodiscus appears to be well adapted to some of the most oligotrophic waters in the ocean. Because it is an important sedimentary marker, the biology of living Ethmodiscus provides insights into the source of extensive Ethmodiscus oozes. Mass sedimentation after frontal accumulation has been suggested as a source for these oozes. Our data contain no evidence that the flux is linked directly to Fe, N or P stress.  相似文献

Sediments were sampled and oxygen profiles of the water column were determined in the Indian Ocean off west and south Indonesia in order to obtain information on the production, transformation, and accumulation of organic matter (OM). The stable carbon isotope composition (δ13Corg) in combination with C/N ratios depicts the almost exclusively marine origin of sedimentary organic matter in the entire study area. Maximum concentrations of organic carbon (Corg) and nitrogen (N) of 3.0% and 0.31%, respectively, were observed in the northern Mentawai Basin and in the Savu and Lombok basins. Minimum δ15N values of 3.7‰ were measured in the northern Mentawai Basin, whereas they varied around 5.4‰ at stations outside this region. Minimum bottom water oxygen concentrations of 1.1 mL L?1, corresponding to an oxygen saturation of 16.1%, indicate reduced ventilation of bottom water in the northern Mentawai Basin. This low bottom water oxygen reduces organic matter decomposition, which is demonstrated by the almost unaltered isotopic composition of nitrogen during early diagenesis. Maximum Corg accumulation rates (CARs) were measured in the Lombok (10.4 g C m?2 yr?1) and northern Mentawai basins (5.2 g C m?2 yr?1). Upwelling-induced high productivity is responsible for the high CAR off East Java, Lombok, and Savu Basins, while a better OM preservation caused by reduced ventilation contributes to the high CAR observed in the northern Mentawai Basin. The interplay between primary production, remineralisation, and organic carbon burial determines the regional heterogeneity. CAR in the Indian Ocean upwelling region off Indonesia is lower than in the Peru and Chile upwellings, but in the same order of magnitude as in the Arabian Sea, the Benguela, and Gulf of California upwellings, and corresponds to 0.1–7.1% of the global ocean carbon burial. This demonstrates the relevance of the Indian Ocean margin off Indonesia for the global OM burial.  相似文献

Phytoplankton community structure is expected to shift to larger cells (e.g., diatoms) with monsoonal forcing in the Arabian Sea, but recent studies suggest that small primary producers remain active and important, even in areas strongly influenced by coastal upwelling. To better understand the role of smaller phytoplankton in such systems, we investigated growth and grazing rates of picophytoplankton populations and their contributions to phytoplankton community biomass and primary productivity during the 1995 Southwest Monsoon (August–September). Environmental conditions at six study stations varied broadly from open-ocean oligotrophic to coastal eutrophic, with mixed-layer nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 11.5 μM NO3 and 0.16 to 1.5 μg Chl a. Picophytoplankton comprised up to 92% of phytoplankton carbon at the oceanic stations, 35% in the diatom-dominated coastal zone, and 26% in a declining Phaeocystis bloom. Concurrent in situ dilution and 14C-uptake experiments gave comparable ranges of community growth rates (0.53–1.05 d−1 and 0.44–1.17 d−1, to the 1% light level), but uncertainties in C:Chl a confounded agreement at individual stations. Microzooplankton grazing utilized 81% of community phytoplankton growth at the oligotrophic stations and 54% at high-nutrient coastal stations. Prochlorococcus (PRO) was present at two oligotrophic stations, where its maximum growth approached 1.4 d−1 (two doublings per day) and depth-integrated growth varied from 0.2 to 0.8 d−1. Synechococcus (SYN) growth ranged from 0.5 to 1.1 d−1 at offshore stations and 0.6 to 0.7 d−1 at coastal sites. Except for the most oligotrophic stations, growth rates of picoeukaryotic algae (PEUK) exceeded PRO and SYN, reaching 1.3 d−1 offshore and decreasing to 0.8 d−1 at the most coastal station. Microzooplankton grazing impact averaged 90, 70, and 86% of growth for PRO, SYN, and PEUK, respectively. Picoplankton as a group accounted for 64% of estimated gross carbon production for all stations, and 50% at high-nutrient, upwelling stations. Prokaryotes (PRO and SYN) contributed disproportionately to production relative to biomass at the most oligotrophic station, while PEUK were more important at the coastal stations. Even during intense monsoonal forcing in the Arabian Sea, picoeukaryotic algae appear to account for a large portion of primary production in the coastal upwelling regions, supporting an active community of protistan grazers and a high rate of carbon cycling in these areas.  相似文献

Authigenic carbonates were collected from methane seeps at Hydrate Hole at 3113 m water depth and Diapir Field at 2417 m water depth on the northern Congo deep-sea fan during RV Meteor cruise M56. The carbonate samples analyzed here are nodules, mainly composed of aragonite and high-Mg calcite. Abundant putative microbial carbonate rods and associated pyrite framboids were recognized within the carbonate matrix. The δ13C values of the Hydrate Hole carbonates range from ?62.5‰ to ?46.3‰ PDB, while the δ13C values of the Diapir Field carbonate are somewhat higher, ranging from ?40.7‰ to ?30.7‰ PDB, indicating that methane is the predominant carbon source at both locations. Relative enrichment of 18O (δ18O values as high as 5.2‰ PDB) are probably related to localized destabilization of gas hydrate. The total content of rare earth elements (REE) of 5% HNO3-treated solutions derived from carbonate samples varies from 1.6 ppm to 42.5 ppm. The shale-normalized REE patterns all display positive Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* > 1.3), revealing that the carbonates precipitated under anoxic conditions. A sample from Hydrate Hole shows a concentric lamination, corresponding to fluctuations in δ13C values as well as trace elements contents. These fluctuations are presumed to reflect changes of seepage flux.  相似文献

Diagenetic analysis based on field and petrographic observations, isotope and microthermometric data was used to reconstruct the fluid flow history of the Cretaceous shallow water limestones from the Panormide platform exposed in north-central Sicily. Analysis focused on diagenetic products in cavities and dissolution enlarged fractures of the karstified limestones that occur just below a regional unconformity. The fluid flow history could be broken down into five stages that were linked to the kinematic and burial history of the region. (1) Petrography (zoned cathodoluminescence and speleothem textures) and stable isotopes (6.5 < δ18OV-PDB < ?3.5‰ and 0 < δ13CV-PDB < ?14‰) indicate that the earliest calcite phase was associated with karstification during emergence of the platform. Limestone dissolution at this stage is important with regard to possible reservoir creation in the Panormide palaeogeographic domain. (2) Fine-grained micrite sedimentation, dated as latest Cretaceous by nannopalaeontology and its 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio (0.7078), marks replacement by marine fluids during subsequent submergence of the karstified platform. (3) The following calcite cement was still precipitated by marine-derived fluids (?7.0 < δ18OV-PDB < ?5.0‰ and ?3.0 < δ13CV-PDB < 0.5‰/Tm = ?2 to ?5 °C), but at increasingly higher temperatures (Th = 60–120 °C). This has been interpreted as precipitation during Oligocene foredeep burial. (4) Hot (Th = 130–180 °C), low saline (Tm < ?2.5 °C) fluids with increasingly higher calculated δ18OSMOW signatures (+6 to +14‰) subsequently invaded the karst system. These fluids most likely migrated during fold and thrust belt development. The low salinity and relatively high δ18OSMOW signatures of the fluids are interpreted to be the result of clay dewatering reactions. The presence of bitumen and associated fluorite with hydrocarbon inclusions at this stage in the paragenesis constrains the timing of oil migration in the region. (5) Finally, high saline fluids with elevated 87Sr/86Sr (0.7095–0.7105) signatures invaded the karst system. This last fluid flow event was possibly coeval with localized dolomitization and calcite cementation along high-angle faults of Pliocene age, as suggested by identical radiogenic signatures of these diagenetic products.  相似文献
