The latitudinal and seasonal variation of the direct solar radiation incident at the top of the atmosphere of Uranus and Neptune has been recalculated by use of updated values for the period of axial rotation and the oblateness. Values for the solar radiation are given in Watt per square meter instead of the unit used in earlier papers (calories per square centimeter per planetary day). The solar radiation averaged over a season and a year as a function of planetocentric latitude has also been reviewed. In addition, attention is made to the ratio of the solar radiation incident on an oblate planet to that incident on a spherical planet.  相似文献

We extend a Jovian convective-cooling model to Uranus and Neptune. The model assumes that efficient interior convection prevails, so that escape of interior heat is governed by the radiative properties of the atmosphere. A comparison of the thermal evolution of Uranus and Neptune indicates that the larger amount of solar radiation absorbed in Uranus' atmosphere tends to differentially suppress the escape of interior heat. The model is shown to be consistent with recent infrared observations of the thermal balance of Uranus and Neptune, and with the presumed age of these planets.  相似文献

Models of the interior of Uranus (Podolak, 1976) suggest that the abundances of such substances as CH4 are greatly enhanced with respect to solar abundances of heavy elements. Such enhancement leads to a new type of model atmosphere for Uranus, which agrees with observation if the internal energy flux is small (?10%) compared with the absorbed solar energy. An important feature of the models is the presence of a cloud of CH4 droplets whose top is at a temperature of ?90°K and a pressure of ?4atm. Above the cloud, the atmosphere is stable because of the rapid decrease of the thermal flux with depth. Being saturated, most of the observable gaseous CH4 is near the cloud; the CH4 abundance above the cloud, of the order of 5 km-am, is a very sensitive function of the cloud-top temperature.  相似文献

Models of convection in Jupiter's interior are studied to test the hypothesis that internal heat balances the absorbed sunlight at each latitude. Such a balance requires that the ratio of total emitted heat to absorbed sunlight be above a critical value 4/π ≈ 1.27. The necessary horizontal heat transport then takes place in the interior instead of in the atmosphere. Regions of stable stratification can arise in the interior owing to the effects of solar heating and rotation. In such regions, upward heat transfer takes place on sloping surfaces, as in the Earth's atmosphere, provided there are horizontal temperature gradients. Potential temperature gradients are found to be small, and the time constant for the pattern to reach equilibrium is found to be short compared to the age of the solar system. It is suggested that Jupiter and Saturn owe their axisymmetric appearance to internal heat flow, which eliminates differential heating in the atmosphere that would otherwise drive meridional motions.  相似文献

New broadband observations in several passbands between 30 and 500 μm of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus are presented. The best agreement between the data and various thermal models of Mars, Jupiter, and Uranus is obtained with a slightly cooler absolute temperature scale than that previously adopted by Armstrong et al. (1972). The effective temperature of Uranus is 58 ± 2°K, which is in agreement with its solar equilibrium temperature. The existence of an internal energy source of Saturn has been reconfirmed and must lie within the range of 0.9 to 3.2 times the absorbed solar flux. A depression exists in the spectra of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus between 80 and 300 μm, which may be a result of NH3 opacity.  相似文献

The meridional energy balance of Jupiter is calculated from high spatial resolution observations by the Voyager 1 infrared spectrometer and radiometer. On a hemispheric scale Jupiter radiates thermal energy to space approximately uniform with latitude while solar energy absorption varies approximately as the solar angle. This implies internal adjustment to the solar energy with a larger contribution poleward of ±45° than in the equatorial zone. The internal flux is modulated by the major visible features of the zone and belt system but, unlike the hemispheric scale where increased internal flux is correlated with decreased solar absorption, on smaller scales the inverse occurs. The energy balance is very likely to be controlled by dynamics, but the relative influence of the upper atmosphere and the interior is not yet clear. Models have been proposed that would explain the pole-to-equator variation in the thermal emission and it is suggested that the smaller scale variations may be the result of forced convective circulation.  相似文献

Calculations of the daily solar radiation incident at the top of Pluto's atmosphere and its variability with latitude and season and of the latitudinal variation of the mean annual daily insolation are presented. The large eccentricity of Pluto produces significant north-south seasonal asymmetries in the daily insolation. As for Uranus, having a similarly large obliquity, the equator receives less annual average energy than the poles.  相似文献

In the planet X model periodic comet showers are associated with passages of the planet's perihelion and aphelion points through a primordial disk of comets believed to lie beyond the orbit of Neptune. A strong feature of this model is that the required orbital elements and mass of planet X are consistent with independently predicted values based on the residuals in the motions of Uranus and Neptune. Here we present a more extensive analysis of the model taking into account the fact that only those comets scattered directly into the zones of influence of Saturn and Jupiter can contribute to a shower whose duration is consistent with observation (≲ 15 myr). These requirements impose a minimum planetary inclination of ≈25°, which in turn restricts the semimajor axis to be ≲100 AU. A fraction of the comets scattered directly into the zones of influence of Uranus and Neptune will evolve on time scales of ∼108 years into the steady state flux of short-period comets. We find that the absolute numbers of shower and steady state are comparable and compatible with the known terrestrial cratering rate, assuming the existence of long-lived extinct comet cores. Canonical planet X model parameters, deduced in part from the scattering dynamics analysis, are: semimajor axis ≈80 AU, eccentricity ≈0.3, inclination ≈45°, and mass ≈5m. An analysis is given which suggests that planet X, in its present orbit, can create the requisite density gradient of comets near perihelion and aphelion during the lifetime of the Solar System. The required inclination of planet X's orbit (≳25°) may explain the failure of previous surveys to discover the planet as its present latitude is not likely to be near the ecliptic. It it exists, the best immediate hope of finding planet X is the ongoing IRAS search in the 100-μm band and the full sky optical survey by Shoemaker and Shoemaker. Independent of the question of periodic comet showers, the existence of planet X and the comet disk can readily explain the origin of the steady state flux of short-period comets over a wide range of parameters.  相似文献

Long-term photometric measurements of Uranus and Neptune through 2005 show variations in brightness. For Uranus, much of the variation can be interpreted as seasonal, i.e., caused by viewing angle changes of an oblate planet. The photometry suggests that if seasonal variations on Uranus are north-south symmetric, then the northern pole should begin to brighten in 2006. However, seasonal “aspect” changes cannot explain all the variation; the Uranus observations require intrinsic atmospheric change. Furthermore, Uranus observations spanning many scale heights in the atmosphere may show similar change. For Neptune, variations in sub-solar latitude may explain the general shape of the long-term light curve, but significant deviations occur that have no explanation at present. Observations are needed over a longer temporal baseline than currently exists to fully characterize both atmospheres.  相似文献

We have measured the 3.33 mm wavelength disk brightness temperatures of Ganymede (136 ± 21°K), Callisto (95 ± 17°K), Ceres (137 ± 25°K), Uranus (125 ± 9°K), and Neptune (126 ± 9°K). Our observations of Ganymede are consistent with the radiation from a blackbody in solar equilibrium, whereas Callisto's microwave spectrum indicates a surface similar to that of the Moon. The disk temperature for Ceres agrees with that expected from a rapidly rotating blackbody. The millimeter temperatures of Uranus and Neptune greatly exceed solar equilibrium values, implying atmospheres with large temperature gradients.  相似文献

Calculations of the daily solar radiation incident at the top of the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, with and without the effect of the oblateness, are presented in a series of figures illustrating the seasonal and latitudinal variation of the ratio of both insolations. It is shown that for parts of the summer, the daily insolation of an oblate planet is increased, the zone of enhanced solar radiation being strongly dependent upon the obliquity, whereas the rate of increase is fixed by both the flattening and the obliquity. In winter, the oblateness effect results in a more extensive polar region, the daily solar radiation of an oblate planet always being reduced when compared to a spherical planet. In addition, we also numerically studied the mean daily solar radiation. As previously stated by A.W. Brinkman and J. McGregor (1979, Icarus, 38, 479–482), it is found that in summer the horizon plane is tilted toward the Sun for latitudes less than the subsolar point, but is titled away from the Sun beyond this latitude. It follows that the mean summer daily insolation is increased between the equator and the subsolar point, but decreased poleward of the above-mentioned limit. In winter, however, the horizon plane is always tilted away from the Sun, causing the mean winter daily insolation to be reduced. The partial gain of the mean summertime insolation being much smaller than the loss during winter season evidently yields a mean annual daily insolation which is decreased at all latitudes.  相似文献

The difference between the interior structures of Uranus and Neptune is presented, based on models which fit the observed mass, radius, and gravitational moments for the assumed rotation periods of these planets. If Uranus and Neptune are assumed to be as similar in internal structure as they are in mass and radius, the rotation period for Neptune must be shorter than that for Uranus. It is suggested that the true rotation period is given by Neptune's oblateness, while the photometric period corresponds to the motion of Rossby waves in the upper atmosphere.  相似文献

A series of time-dependent radiative/convective models are presented for the atmosphere of Uranus. The effects of atmospheric dynamics have been omitted from the models. The inclination of the pole of rotation to the pole of the orbit, approximately 90°, produces large seasonal changes in the insolation. Because of the relatively small flow of heat from the interior, these seasonal changes cause the effective temperature, which is about 60°K, to vary through the 84-year orbital period by ~5°K at the poles, ~4°K at ±60° latitude, ~2°K at ±30° latitude, and ~0.5°K at the equator. For a particular latitude, the minimum effective temperature and the maximum convective flow of heat from the interior occur near the end of the period when the sun remains below the horizon during the Uranian day. If the methane mixing ratio is not limited by its saturated vapor pressure (SVP) in the convective region, the maximum convective flow would be a few times the orbital average convective flow and persist for an interval of several years. On the other hand, if the methane mixing ratio is limited by its SVP in the convective regions, the maximum convective flow could be orders of magnitude greater than the orbital average and could persist for less than an hour. If the orbital mean internal heat flow is negligible, the difference in effective temperatures between 30 and 60° latitude would be in the range 2 to 4°K. If the internal heat is taken to be about the maximum allowable and is assumed to be redistributed in the interior in a manner to compensate for the minimum in insolation at low latitudes, the corresponding temperature difference would be in the range 12 to 2°K. In either case, the existing theory of atmospheric dynamics for the outer planets indicates that such large temperature differences will drive large-scale motions which would in turn reduce these temperature differences.  相似文献

Thermal models of planetary atmospheres can be calculated from assumptions of the energy budget of the atmosphere and from the knowledge of the effective temperature of the studied planet. On the other hand, the retrieval of the thermal atmospheric profiles from infrared measurements by means of the numerical inversion of the radiative transfer equation presents the advantages of not requiring such assumptions. The extent of the atmospheric range which can then be sounded is examined and the vertical resolution of the inferred profiles is discussed. Comparisons of thermal models and retrieved thermal profiles are made for the four giant planets. The retrieved profiles lead to brightness temperature spectra which fit all the available infrared measurements fairly well for Jupiter and Saturn but only part of them for Uranus and Neptune. The values of the planetary effective temperatures calculated from the retrieved profiles show that Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune have strong internal heating sources while Uranus probably has a very small or null one.  相似文献

The recent measurements of the vertical distribution and optical properties of haze aerosols as well as of the absorption coefficients for methane at long paths and cold temperatures by the Huygens entry probe of Titan permit the computation of the solar heating rate on Titan with greater certainty than heretofore. We use the haze model derived from the Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) instrument on the Huygens probe [Tomasko, M.G., Doose, L., Engel, S., Dafoe, L.E., West, R., Lemmon, M., Karkoschka, E., See, C., 2008a. A model of Titan's aerosols based on measurements made inside the atmosphere. Planet. Space Sci., this issue, doi:10.1016/j.pss.2007.11.019] to evaluate the variation in solar heating rate with altitude and solar zenith angle in Titan's atmosphere. We find the disk-averaged solar energy deposition profile to be in remarkably good agreement with earlier estimates using very different aerosol distributions and optical properties. We also evaluated the radiative cooling rate using measurements of the thermal emission spectrum by the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) around the latitude of the Huygens site. The thermal flux was calculated as a function of altitude using temperature, gas, and haze profiles derived from Huygens and Cassini/CIRS data. We find that the cooling rate profile is in good agreement with the solar heating profile averaged over the planet if the haze structure is assumed the same at all latitudes. We also computed the solar energy deposition profile at the 10°S latitude of the probe-landing site averaged over one Titan day. We find that some 80% of the sunlight that strikes the top of the atmosphere at this latitude is absorbed in all, with 60% of the incident solar energy absorbed below 150 km, 40% below 80 km, and 11% at the surface at the time of the Huygens landing near the beginning of summer in the southern hemisphere. We compare the radiative cooling rate with the solar heating rate near the Huygens landing site averaging over all longitudes. At this location, we find that the solar heating rate exceeds the radiative cooling rate by a maximum of 0.5 K/Titan day near 120 km altitude and decreases strongly above and below this altitude. Since there is no evidence that the temperature structure at this latitude is changing, the general circulation must redistribute this heat to higher latitudes.  相似文献

We present 20-μm photometry of Uranus and Neptune which confirms the presence of a temperature inversion in the lower stratospheres in both planets. We find the brightness temperature difference between 17.8 and 19.6 μm to be 0.8 ± 0.5°K for Uranus and 1.8 ± 0.6°K for Neptune. These results indicate that the temperature inversions on both planets are weaker than previously thought. Comparison to model atmospheres by J. Appleby [Ph.D. thesis, SUNY at Stony Brook 1980] indicates that the temperature inversions can be understood as arising from heating by the absorption of sunlight by CH4 and aerosols. However, the stratospheric CH4 mixing ratio on Neptune must be higher than that at the temperature minimum.  相似文献

Using current concepts for the origin of the Jovian planets and current constraints on their interior structure, we argue that the presence of large amounts of “ice” (H2O, CH4, and NH3) in Uranus and Neptune indicates temperatures low enough to condense these species at the time Uranus and Neptune formed. Yet such low temperatures imply orders-of-magnetude fractionation effects for deuterium into the “ice” component if isotopic equilibration can occur. Our models thus imply that Uranus and Neptune should have a D/H ratio at least four times primordial, contrary to observation for Uranus. We find that the Jovian and Saturnian D/H should be close to primordial regardless of formation scenario. The Uranus anomaly could indicate that there was a strong initial radial gradient in D/H in the primordial solar nebula, or that Uranus is so inactive that no significant mixing of its interior has occurred over the age of the solar system. Observation of Neptune's atmospheric D/H may help to resolve the problem.  相似文献

We have examined a wide range of physical, chemical, and thermal models of the atmosphere of Uranus. In that model, which we believe maximizes favorable conditions for the support of life [Weidenschilling and Lewis, Icarus20, 465–476 (1973)], we find the probability of growth of a contaminant terrestrial microorganisms to be nil. If, as is likely, conditions are even more extreme on Neptune, the probability of contamination of both of the outer planets Uranus and Neptune is nil. The Wiedenschilling and Lewis model guarantees the presence of water droplets through the temperature range 0 to 100°C; other published models add water liquid at higher temperatures or fail to provide liquid water at all within this temperature range. In this model the heavy elements (C, N, O, etc.) are enhanced in Uranus by a factor sufficient to form a deep massive cloud layer of aqueous ammonia solution droplets. We can estimate the probability of growth with respect to the following factors: the presence of stable liquid water, convection of parcels of atmosphere to lethally hot depths, solar energy sources reaching the water layer, organic molecular production by solar ultraviolet light, ammonia concentration at the water cloud level, ionic species distribution, and concentrations at the water cloud level. The evaluation of these factors suggests that most terrestrial life as we know it would be excluded on the basis of any one of them. We know of no organism that would be adapted to all the stringent Uranus conditions simultaneously. The discovery of even a single species of Earth organism that can survive or grow under allowable outer planetary conditions would establish new principles in biology.Titan, the methane-rich moon of Saturn, may be more hospitable for terrestrial organisms than any of the other objects of the outer solar system. Even there we see formidable barriers to the growth of an Earth organism in Titan's atmosphere. We recognize that revision of our views concerning Titan must occur as more is learned about this satellite. We advocate the abandonment, in principle, of the probabilistic approach to the estimation of growth of terrestrial organisms on spacecraft, planets, and satellites in the solar system. We do not support an approach which estimates probabilities of qualitatively unknown phenomena. We recommend a strategy which involves identification and intensive study of those organisms most likely to thrive under known conditions for each of the planets respectively. (Unknown environmental conditions may be allowed to vary optimally.) Some explicit areas for Earth-based experimentation are indicated.  相似文献

Absolutely calibrated spectra of Uranus, Neptune, and the solar analog stars 16 Cyg A and B between 2100 and 3350 Å are reported. The geometric albedos of both planets are close to the curve expected for a semi-infinite Rayleigh-Raman scattering atmosphere between 2100 and 2800 Å. Longward of 2800 Å the albedos fall below the Rayleigh-Raman values and connect smoothly to the ground-based photometry of J.S. Neff, D.C. Humm, J.T. Bergstralh, A.L. Cochran, W.D. Cochran, E.S. Barker, and R.G. Tull (1984, Icarus60, 221–235).Neptune is about 5.5% brighter than Uranus and shows slightly stronger Raman scattering signatures in the MgII lines at 2800 Å in accordance with the results of Neff et al. for the CaII H and K lines. This means that the stratospheric haze on Neptune is thinner than on Uranus. The fact that the Neptunian geometric albedo between 2100 and 2800 Å is so close to the ideal semi-infinite Rayleigh-Raman scattering atmosphere could be exploited for future absolute calibrations of other Solar System objects in this wavelength region.  相似文献
