Disk-resolved reflectance spectra of the surface of Mercury (longitudes 240-300°), obtained in the visual (vis) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, are presented and analyzed. The observations were made at the 2.6-m Nordic Optical Telescope with the ALFOSC low-resolution spectrograph on 20 and 22 June 1999 in the wavelength range 520-970 nm with a footprint size of 700 km on the mid-disk of Mercury. A method which enables more accurate correction for telluric line absorptions and atmospheric extinction than that applied on previously published vis-NIR spectra of Mercury is introduced. The resulting reflectance spectra are remarkably linear, lack significant absorption features, and have optical slopes comparable to remotely sensed lunar pure anorthosites. The relation between spectral slope and photometric geometry found by Warell (2002, Icarus 156, 313-317) is confirmed and is explained as caused by strongly backscattering particles with embedded submicroscopic metallic iron in a mature regolith. With the theoretical maturation model of Hapke (2001, J. Geophys. Res. 106 (E5), 10039-10073) an abundance of 0.05-0.3 wt% submicroscopic metallic iron in the regolith for silicate grain sizes in the range 10-80 μm is determined, implying a ferrous iron content in mafic minerals intrinsically lower than that of the lunar highlands. A binary crustal composition model with anorthite linearly mixed with pyroxene provides better spectral fits than a pure anorthitic composition. Comparison with mature lunar pure anorthosite spectra yields a confident upper limit to the FeO content of 3 wt% under the assumption that the surfaces are similarly matured, but this figure probably represents a considerable overestimate. The average mercurian regolith does not seem to be substantially more weathered than the most mature lunar highland soils in terms of abundance of submicroscopic metallic iron, indicating that a steady-state maturation level has been reached. However, the strong relation between optical spectral slope and photometric geometry may imply that the majority of regolith particles are more fine-grained than their lunar counterparts and that the regolith is admixed with complex agglutinate weathering products which are more abundant and more transparent than those of the lunar highlands. This is consistent with more energetic impacts and a higher rate of impact melt production in an iron-poor regolith. An observed relation between the spectral slope and latitude provides evidence that the Ostwald ripening process may be operating at equatorial latitudes on Mercury.  相似文献

Abstract— Based on recent progress in simulating space weathering on asteroids using pulse‐laser irradiation onto olivine and orthopyroxene samples, detailed analyses of two of the A and R type asteroid reflectance spectra have been performed using reflectance spectra of laser‐treated samples. The visible‐near‐infrared spectrum of olivine is more altered than that of pyroxene at the same pulse‐laser energy, suggesting that olivine weathers more rapidly than orthopyroxene in space. The same trend can be detected from reflectance spectra of the asteroids, where the more olivine an asteroid has, the redder its 1 μm band continuum can become. Comparison of the 1 μm band continuum slope and the 2/1 μm band area ratio between the asteroids and olivine and pyroxene samples (including the laser‐treated ones) suggests that asteroids may be limited in the degree of space weathering they can exhibit, possibly due to the short life of their surface regolith. Their pyroxenes may also have a limited chemical composition range. Fitting the visible continuum shape and other parts of the spectra (especially the 2μm part) has been impossible with any combination of common rock‐forming minerals such as silicates and metallic irons. However, this study shows, for the first time, excellent fits of reflectance spectra of an A asteroid (Aeternitas) and an R asteroid (Dembowska), including their visible spectral curves, band depths and shapes, and overall continuum shapes. Our results provide estimates that Aeternitas consists of 2% fresh olivine, 93% space‐weathered olivine, 1% space‐weathered orthopyroxene, and 4% chromite, and that Dembowska consists of 1% fresh olivine, 55% space‐weathered olivine, and 44% space‐weathered orthopyroxene. These results suggest that space weathering effects maybe important to the interpretation of asteroid reflectance spectra, even those with deep silicate absorption bands. Modified Gaussian model deconvolutions of the laser‐irradiated olivine samples show that their identity as olivine remained. The most recent submicroscopic mineralogical analyses have revealed that the laser‐irradiated olivine samples contain nanophase iron particles similar to those in space‐weathered lunar samples.  相似文献

Lunar meteorites provide important new samples of the Moon remote from regions visited by the Apollo and Luna sample return missions. Petrologic and geochemical analysis of these meteorites, combined with orbital remote sensing measurements, have enabled additional discoveries about the composition and age of the lunar surface on a global scale. However, the interpretation of these samples is limited by the fact that we do not know the source region of any individual lunar meteorite. Here, we investigate the link between meteorite and source region on the Moon using the Lunar Prospector gamma ray spectrometer remote sensing data set for the elements Fe, Ti, and Th. The approach has been validated using Apollo and Luna bulk regolith samples, and we have applied it to 48 meteorites excluding paired stones. Our approach is able broadly to differentiate the best compositional matches as potential regions of origin for the various classes of lunar meteorites. Basaltic and intermediate Fe regolith breccia meteorites are found to have the best constrained potential launch sites, with some impact breccias and pristine mare basalts also having reasonably well‐defined potential source regions. Launch areas for highland feldspathic meteorites are much less well constrained and the addition of another element, such as Mg, will probably be required to identify potential source regions for these.  相似文献

Abstract– Space weathering products, such as agglutinates and nanophase iron‐bearing rims are easily preserved through lithification in lunar regolith breccias, thus such products, if produced, should be preserved in asteroidal regolith breccias as well. A study of representative regolith breccia meteorites, Fayetteville (H4) and Kapoeta (howardite), was undertaken to search for physical evidence of space weathering on asteroids. Amorphous or npFe0‐bearing rims cannot be positively identified in Fayetteville, although possible glass rims were found. Extensive friction melt was discovered in the meteorite that is difficult to differentiate from weathered materials. Several melt products, including spherules and agglutinates, as well as one irradiated rim and one possible npFe0‐bearing rim were identified in Kapoeta. The existence of these products suggests that lunar‐like space weathering processes are, or have been, active on asteroids.  相似文献

Abstract— We have analyzed a suite of lunar regolith breccias in order to assess how well space weathering products can be preserved through the lithification process and therefore whether or not it is appropriate to search for space weathering products in asteroidal regolith breccia meteorites. It was found that space weathering products, vapor/sputter deposited nanophase‐iron‐bearing rims in particular, are easily identified in even heavily shocked/compacted lunar regolith breccias. Such rims, if created on asteroids, should thus be preserved in asteroidal regolith breccia meteorites. Two additional rim types, glass rims and vesicular rims, identified in regolith breccias, are also described. These rims are common in lunar regolith breccias but rare to absent in lunar soils, which suggests that they are created in the breccia‐forming process itself. While not “space weathering products” in the strictest sense, these additional rims give us insight into the regolith breccia formation process. The presence or absence of glass and/or vesicular rims in asteroidal regolith breccias will likewise tell us about environmental conditions on the surface of the asteroid body on which the breccia was created.  相似文献

Abstract— We obtained color images of near‐Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa by the Hayabusa multiband imaging camera to characterize the regional color properties. Images were obtained for the whole disk from the gate position (GP) and home position (HP) at a spatial resolution of 0.8–3.7 m/pixel. Whole‐disk spectra are adjusted to the telescopic data obtained by the University of Hawai'i's 88‐inch telescope using the Eight Color Asteroid Survey (ECAS) system. The disk‐resolved measurements show large variations in the three visible channels. We present a map of an index related to the degree of space weathering, which has been newly developed based on laboratory measurements. We find large variations in the degree of space weathering on Itokawa. Fresh materials are observed in regions of steep slopes and craters, whereas mature materials are ubiquitously distributed. This result suggests that pristine ordinary chondrite‐like materials have been exposed through weathered layers by excavation. By also examining close‐up images obtained during touchdown rehearsal, we find that most rocks in Itokawa's rough terrains are weathered. Instead of a regolith blanket, the surface of this small asteroid is covered with weathered rocks and gravels.  相似文献

The surfaces of airless bodies, such as the Moon and asteroids, are subject to space weathering, which alters the mineralogy of the upper tens of nanometers of grain surfaces. Atom probe tomography (APT) has the appropriate 3‐D spatial resolution and analytical sensitivity to investigate such features at the nanometer scale. Here, we demonstrate that APT can be successfully used to characterize the composition and texture of space weathering products in ilmenite from Apollo 17 sample 71501 at near‐atomic resolution. Two of the studied nanotips sampled the top surface of the space‐weathered grain, while another nanotip sampled the ilmenite at about 50 nm below the surface. These nanotips contain small nanophase Fe particles (~3 to 10 nm diameter), with these particles becoming less frequent with depth. One of the nanotips contains a sequence of space weathering products, compositional zoning, and a void space (~15 nm in diameter) which we interpret as a vesicle generated by solar wind irradiation. No noble gases were detected in this vesicle, although there is evidence for 4He elsewhere in the nanotip. This lunar soil grain exhibits the same space weathering features that have been well documented in transmission electron microscope studies of lunar and Itokawa asteroidal regolith grains.  相似文献

Submicroscopic iron particles larger than about 50 nm, infused throughout mineral grains or glasses, are abundant in planetary materials altered by their environment such as shocked meteorites and lunar agglutinate glasses. Such particles darken their host material but do not redden their spectra but to date there has been no theoretical treatment of their optical effects. Using Mie theory, we modify the Hapke (2001) radiative transfer model of the effects of space weathering to include these effects. Comparison with laboratory measurements shows that the new treatment reproduces the relationship between submicroscopic iron size, abundance and reflectance. We apply this new model to near-IR spectra of Mercury recently obtained by the MESSENGER spacecraft and find that submicroscopic iron is much more abundant on Mercury than in lunar soils, with typical total submicroscopic iron abundances near 3.5 wt.% compared to about 0.5 wt.% for lunar soils We also find that the ratio of iron particles that darken but do not redden to the abundance of very small iron particles that impart the red slope to space weathered material is much larger than lunar (6 vs. 2). Both the total submicroscopic iron abundance and ratio of particle size fractions are consistent with the higher production of melt and vapor in micrometeorite impact on Mercury relative to the Moon (Cintala, 1992) that enables more accumulation of space weathering products before sequestration by regolith overturn. The radiative transfer model cannot directly constrain the abundance of opaque minerals on Mercury because of ambiguities between the darkening effects of opaques and submicroscopic iron particles larger than 50 nm, but assuming the opaques are the ultimate source of the submicroscopic iron, our results place a lower limit of 4-20 wt.% on opaque abundance on Mercury depending on the composition of the opaque phase and whether titanium metal also contributes to the space weathering effect.  相似文献

The lunar soil maturity is the most important parameter of the Moon's surface material. The degree of regolith processing should be taken into account in remote determinations of the chemical and mineralogical surface compositions. However, the possibilities for directly determining the lunar regolith maturity are limited to laboratory studies of the fine fraction and microparticles of samples returned to Earth. In these conditions, the urgency of developing methods for remotely determining the lunar soil maturity increases sharply. The suggested method of using spectropolarimetric data to quantitatively estimate the maturity of the surface material has an advantage that the derived maturity index is determined only by structural parameters of the reflecting layer and is completely free from the effects of chemical and mineralogical surface rock compositions. The reference catalog of spectropolarimetric indices contains values for 92 objects on the Moon's visible hemisphere and includes a wide range of structures with various degrees of maturity of the surface material. We obtained correlations with other maturity indices determined by laboratory and remote sensing techniques and the time scale that represents the correspondence between the spectropolarimetric maturity index and the soil exposure age.  相似文献

Abstract— The fine fraction of lunar soils (<45 μm) dominates the optical properties of the bulk soil. Definite trends can be seen in optical properties of size separates with decreasing particle size: diminished spectral contrast and a steeper continuum slope. These trends are related to space weathering processes and their affects on different size fractions. The finest fraction (defined here as the <10 μm fraction) appears to be enriched in weathering products relative to the larger size fractions, as would be expected for surface correlated processes. This <10 μm fraction tends to exhibit very little spectral contrast, often with no distinguishable ferrous iron absorption bands. Additionally, the finest fractions of highland soils are observed to have very different spectral properties than the equivalent fraction of mare soils when compared with larger size fractions. The spectra of the finest fraction of feldspathic soils flatten at longer wavelengths, whereas those of the finest fraction of basaltic soils continue to increase in a steep, almost linear fashion. This compositional distinction is due to differences in the total amount of nanophase iron that accumulates in space weathering products. Such ground‐truth information derived from the <10 μm fraction of lunar soils provides valuable insight into optical properties to be expected in other space weathering environments such as the asteroids and Mercury.  相似文献

Disk-integrated and disk-resolved measurements of Mercury’s surface obtained by both the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) and the Mercury Atmospheric and Surface Composition Spectrometer (MASCS) onboard the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft were analyzed and compared with previous ground-based observations of Mercury at 11 wavelengths. The spectra show no definitive absorption features and display a red spectral slope (increasing reflectance with increasing wavelength) typical of space-weathered rocky surfaces. The MDIS spectra show evidence of phase reddening, which is not observed in the MASCS spectra. The MDIS spectra are commensurate with ground-based observations to within 10%, whereas the MASCS spectra display greater discrepancies with ground-based observations at near-infrared wavelengths. The derived photometric calibrations provide corrections within 10% for observations taken at phase angles less than ∼100°. The derived photometric properties are indicative of a more compact regolith than that of the lunar surface or of average S-type asteroids. The photometric roughness of the surface is also much smoother than the Moon’s. The calculated geometric albedo (reflectance at zero phase) is higher than lunar values. The lower reflectance of immature units on Mercury compared with immature units on the Moon, in conjunction with the higher geometric albedo, is indicative of more complicated grain structures within Mercury’s regolith.  相似文献

Abstract— The meteorite Northwest Africa 773 (NWA 773) is a lunar sample with implications for the evolution of mafic magmas on the moon. A combination of key parameters including whole‐rock oxygen isotopic composition, Fe/Mn ratios in mafic silicates, noble gas concentrations, a KREEP‐like rare earth element pattern, and the presence of regolith agglutinate fragments indicate a lunar origin for NWA 773. Partial maskelynitization of feldspar and occasional twinning of pyroxene are attributed to shock deformation. Terrestrial weathering has caused fracturing and precipitation of Carich carbonates and sulfates in the fractures, but lunar minerals appear fresh and unoxidized. The meteorite is composed of two distinct lithologies: a two‐pyroxene olivine gabbro with cumulate texture, and a polymict, fragmental regolith breccia. The olivine gabbro is dominated by cumulate olivine with pigeonite, augite, and interstitial plagioclase feldspar. The breccia consists of several types of clasts but is dominated by clasts from the gabbro and more FeO‐rich derivatives. Variations in clast mineral assemblage and pyroxene Mg/(Mg + Fe) and Ti/(Ti + Cr) record an igneous Fe‐enrichment trend that culminated in crystallization of fayalite + silica + hedenbergite‐bearing symplectites. The Fe‐enrichment trend and cumulate textures observed in NWA 773 are similar to features of terrestrial ponded lava flows and shallow‐level mafic intrusives, indicating that NWA 773 may be from a layered mafic intrusion or a thick, differentiated lava flow. NWA 773 and several other mafic lunar meteorites have LREE‐enriched patters distinct from Apollo and Luna mare basalts, which tend to be LREE‐depleted. This is somewhat surprising in light of remote sensing data that indicates that the Apollo and Luna missions sampled a portion of the moon that was enriched in incompatible heatproducing elements.  相似文献

Spectra of asteroid 4 Vesta obtained in October 1990 with the International Ultraviolet Explorer are reanalyzed and reinterpreted. A large portion of the eastern hemisphere (based on the prime meridian definition of Thomas et al., 1997a) is darker at UV wavelengths than much of the western hemisphere. The UV lightcurve is in contrast with the visible lightcurve, which shows that the eastern hemisphere is brighter than the western. These IUE spectra of Vesta thus may be evidence for the “spectral reversal,” first seen on the Moon by Apollo 17, where the visibly brighter lunar highlands are darker than the maria at far-UV wavelengths. This effect was linked to space weathering when it was noted (Wagner et al., 1987) that the spectral reversal appears in the laboratory spectra of lunar soils but not powdered lunar rocks. We investigate Vesta’s UV lightcurve and spectral reversal, and its possible connection with space weathering. The addition to grain coatings of small amounts of submicroscopic iron (SMFe) through vapor deposition causes drastic spectral changes at UV-visible wavelengths (Hapke, 2001), while the longer wavelength spectrum remains largely unaffected. Other laboratory results (e.g., Hiroi and Pieters, 1998) indicate that the UV-visible wavelength range is affected by simulated weathering processes in a manner similar to what is seen on Vesta. It is likely that Vesta has experienced relatively minor amounts of space weathering, as indicated by the spectral reversal, along with the subtle visible-near infrared weathering effects (e.g., Binzel et al., 1997).  相似文献

The volume FeO and TiO_2 abundances(FTAs) of lunar regolith can be more important for understanding the geological evolution of the Moon compared to the optical and gamma-ray results. In this paper, the volume FTAs are retrieved with microwave sounder(CELMS) data from the Chang'E-2 satellite using the back propagation neural network(BPNN) method. Firstly, a three-layered BPNN network with five-dimensional input is constructed by taking nonlinearity into account. Then, the brightness temperature(TB) and surface slope are set as the inputs and the volume FTAs are set as the outputs of the BPNN network.Thereafter, the BPNN network is trained with the corresponding parameters collected from Apollo, Luna, and Surveyor missions. Finally, the volume FTAs are retrieved with the trained BPNN network using the four-channel TBderived from the CELMS data and the surface slope estimated from Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter(LOLA) data. The rationality of the retrieved FTAs is verified by comparing with the Clementine UV-VIS results and Lunar Prospector(LP) GRS results. The retrieved volume FTAs enable us to re-evaluate the geological features of the lunar surface. Several important results are as follows. Firstly, very-low-Ti(<1.5 wt.%) basalts are the most spatially abundant, and the surfaces with TiO_2> 5 wt.% constitute less than 10% of the maria. Also, two linear relationships occur between the FeO abundance(FA) and the TiO_2 abundance before and after the threshold, 16 wt.% for FA. Secondly, a new perspective on mare volcanism is derived with the volume FTAs in several important mare basins, although this conclusion should be verified with more sources of data. Thirdly, FTAs in the lunar regolith change with depth to the uppermost surface, and the change is complex over the lunar surface. Finally, the distribution of volume FTAs hints that the highlands crust is probably homogeneous, at least in terms of the microwave thermophysical parameters.  相似文献

The lunar rock and mineral characterization consortium (LRMCC) has conducted coordinated mineralogy/petrography/spectroscopy analyses of a suite of pristine lunar basalts. Four basalt slabs (two low‐Ti, two high‐Ti) and paired thin sections were analyzed. Thin sections were analyzed for mineralogy/petrography, while the slabs were used to prepare particulate separates of major mineral phases and bulk samples. Mineral separates and particulate bulk samples were crushed to controlled grain sizes and their reflectance spectra measured in the NASA RELAB at Brown University. The resulting data set provides an essential foundation for spectral mixing models, offers valuable endmember constraints for space weathering analyses, and represents critical new ground truth results for lunar science and exploration efforts.  相似文献

Remote observations of the lunar radiowave emission are reexamined in the light of physical property data accumulated through the Apollo program. It is found that thermal and electrical properties determined for a number of different landing sites yield theoretical results in good agreement with remote observations for millimeter and short centimeter wavelengths. Theoretical models incorporating reflecting layers of rock and physical property data from the Apollo program are compared to the longer wavelength (5–500 cm) observational data to estimate a disk average steady state heat flow and a mean depth of the lunar regolith. It is found that a high heat flow, comparable to the heat flows measured at the Apollo 15 and 17 sites, is required to fit the available 5–20 cm wavelength remote data, and that a lunar surface layer relatively free of large boulders within the upper 10–30 m best fits the observations of a decreasing brightness temperature with wavelength for wavelengths greater than ~ 50 cm.  相似文献

Measurements of the disk-integrated reflectance spectrum of Mercury and the Moon have been obtained by the MESSENGER spacecraft. A comparison of spectra from the two bodies, spanning the wavelength range 220-1450 nm, shows that the absolute reflectance of Mercury is lower than that of the nearside waxing Moon at the same phase angle with a spectral slope that is less steep at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. We interpret these results and the lack of an absorption feature at a wavelength near 1000 nm as evidence for a Mercury surface composition that is low in ferrous iron within silicates but is higher in the globally averaged abundance of spectrally neutral opaque minerals than the Moon. Similar conclusions have been reached by recent investigations based on observations from both MESSENGER and Mariner 10. There is weak evidence for a phase-reddening effect in Mercury that is slightly larger in magnitude than for the lunar nearside. An apparent absorption in the middle-ultraviolet wavelength range of the Mercury spectrum detected from the first MESSENGER flyby of Mercury is found to persist in subsequent observations from the second flyby. The current model of space weathering on the Moon, which also presumably applies to Mercury, does not provide an explanation for the presence of this ultraviolet absorption.  相似文献

Abstract— Using new techniques to examine the products of space weathering of lunar soils, we demonstrate that nanophase reduced iron (npFe0) is produced on the surface of grains by a combination of vapor deposition and irradiation effects. The optical properties of soils (both measured and modeled) are shown to be highly dependent on the cumulative amount of npFe0, which varies with different starting materials and the energetics of different parts of the solar system. The measured properties of intermediate albedo asteroids, the abundant S‐type asteroids in particular, are shown to directly mimic the effects predicted for small amounts of npFe0 on grains of an ordinary chondrite regolith. This measurement and characterization of space weathering products seems to remove a final obstacle hindering a link between the abundant ordinary chondrite meteorites and common asteroids.  相似文献

Mineral mapping of the lunar surface is critical to understanding the Moon’s geological diversity and history, yet the global lunar abundance of minerals has not been mapped using hyperspectral data. The Interference Imaging Spectrometer (IIM) of Chang’E-1 mission obtained hyperspectral data of the global lunar surface within the wavelength of 480–960 nm in which major minerals can be discriminated by faint differences in 32 contiguous hyperspectral bands. The effect of space weathering produces multiple endmembers of lunar minerals by obscuring the pure spectra of minerals in different levels. In this study, the distributions of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and olivine on the global lunar surface were mapped with IIM hyperspectral data based on the modified Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) method considering the space weathering effect. The distribution of lunar space weathering levels was retrieved as a byproduct of mineral mapping. The mineral mapping results were compared with recent mapping results. Although the wavelength of IIM is limited, it shows that our results are basically consistent with the recent research at both global and local scales. The distribution of space weathering levels is also consistent with the map of optical maturity parameter (OMAT) in most parts of the global lunar surface, especially in the highlands. This study demonstrates that the modified MESMA method is an effective approach to quantitative mapping of the lunar minerals and space weathering levels using hyperspectral data. In the future, more minerals can be mapped with higher accuracy if hyperspectral data with a wider spectral range are used based on the method proposed in this study.  相似文献
