Astrophysical fluids under the influence of magnetic fields are often subjected to single- or two-fluid approximations. In the case of weakly ionized plasmas, however, this can be inappropriate due to distinct responses from the multiple constituent species to both collisional and non-collisional forces. As a result, in dense molecular clouds and protostellar accretion discs, for instance, the conductivity of the plasma may be highly anisotropic leading to phenomena such as Hall and ambipolar diffusion strongly influencing the dynamics.
Diffusive processes are known to restrict the stability of conventional numerical schemes which are not implicit in nature. Furthermore, recent work establishes that a large Hall term can impose an additional severe stability limit on standard explicit schemes. Following a previous paper, which presented the one-dimensional case, we describe a fully three-dimensional method which relaxes the normal restrictions on explicit schemes for multifluid processes. This is achieved by applying the little-known Super TimeStepping technique to the symmetric (ambipolar) component of the evolution operator for the magnetic field in the local plasma rest frame, and the new Hall Diffusion Scheme to the skew-symmetric (Hall) component.  相似文献

There are several astrophysical situations where one needs to study the dynamics of magnetic flux in partially ionized turbulent plasmas. In a partially ionized plasma, the magnetic induction is subjected to the ambipolar diffusion and the Hall effect in addition to the usual resistive dissipation. In this paper, we initiate the study of the kinematic dynamo in a partially ionized turbulent plasma. The Hall effect arises from the treatment of the electrons and the ions as two separate fluids and the ambipolar diffusion due to the inclusion of neutrals as the third fluid. It is shown that these non-ideal effects modify the so-called α effect and the turbulent diffusion coefficient β in a rather substantial way. The Hall effect may enhance or quench the dynamo action altogether. The ambipolar diffusion brings in an α which depends on the mean magnetic field. The new correlations embodying the coupling of the charged fluids and the neutral fluid appear in a decisive manner. The turbulence is necessarily magnetohydrodynamic with new spatial and time-scales. The nature of the new correlations is demonstrated by taking the Alfvénic turbulence as an example.  相似文献

We study role of the Hall diffusion in the magnetic star-disc interaction. In a simplified steady state configuration, the total torque is calculated in terms of the fastness parameter and a new term because of the Hall diffusion. We show the total torque reduces as the Hall term becomes more significant. Also, the critical fastness parameter (at which the total torque is zero) reduces because of the Hall diffusion.  相似文献

In recent years it has become evident that large differences can exist between model results of grain-surface chemistry obtained from a rate equation approach and from a Monte Carlo technique. This dichotomy has led to the development of a modified rate equation method, in which a key element is the artificial slowing down of the diffusion rate of surface hydrogen atoms. Recent laboratory research into the surface diffusion rate of atomic hydrogen suggests that atomic hydrogen moves more slowly on grains than heretofore assumed. This research appears to lessen the need for modifications to the rate equation method. Based on the new laboratory work, we have developed appropriate models of gas-phase and grain-surface chemistry in quiescent dense cloud cores to examine the chemical effects of slowing down the rate at which atomic H can scan over dust surfaces. Furthermore, we have investigated the effect of slowing down the rate at which all species can move over grain surfaces.  相似文献

We present a linear analysis of the vertical structure and growth of the magnetorotational instability in stratified, weakly ionized accretion discs, such as protostellar and quiescent dwarf novae systems. The method includes the effects of the magnetic coupling, the conductivity regime of the fluid and the strength of the magnetic field, which is initially vertical. The conductivity is treated as a tensor and is assumed to be constant with height.
We obtained solutions for the structure and growth rate of global unstable modes for different conductivity regimes, strengths of the initial magnetic field and coupling between ionized and neutral components of the fluid. The envelopes of short-wavelength perturbations are determined by the action of competing local growth rates at different heights, driven by the vertical stratification of the disc. Ambipolar diffusion perturbations peak consistently higher above the midplane than modes including Hall conductivity. For weak coupling, perturbations including the Hall effect grow faster and act over a more extended cross-section of the disc than those obtained using the ambipolar diffusion approximation.
Finally, we derived an approximate criterion for when Hall diffusion determines the growth of the magnetorotational instability. This is satisfied over a wide range of radii in protostellar discs, reducing the extent of the magnetic 'dead zone'. Even if the magnetic coupling is weak, significant accretion may occur close to the midplane, rather than in the surface regions of weakly ionized discs.  相似文献

The breakdown of flux-freezing in molecular clouds and protostellar discs is usually approximated by ambipolar diffusion at low densities or by resistive diffusion at high densities. Here an intermediate regime is discussed in which the Hall term in the conductivity tensor is significant, and the vector evolution of the magnetic field, and therefore the evolution of the system under consideration is dramatically altered. Calculations of charged particle abundances in dense gas in molecular clouds and protostellar discs demonstrate that Hall diffusion is important over a surprisingly broad range of conditions.  相似文献

We have suggested in a previous article that the coarse-grained evolution of a collisionless stellar system could be viewed as a diffusion process in velocity space compensated by an appropriate friction. Using a quasi-linear theory, we calculate the diffusion coefficient associated with this evolution. This provides a new self-consistent relaxation equation for f , the locally averaged distribution function. This equation bears some resemblance to the conventional Fokker–Planck equation of collisional systems but the friction term is non-linear in f (accounting for degeneracy effects) and the relaxation time is much smaller (in agreement with the concept of 'violent relaxation'). Under the condition that the diffusion current vanishes identically at equilibrium, we recover Lynden-Bell's distribution function; but if we allow stars to escape from the system at a constant rate, we can derive a truncated model which coincides with Lynden-Bell's solution in the core but provides a depletion of high-energy stars in the halo. This distribution function has a finite mass and is the generalization of the Michie–King model to the case of (possibly degenerate) collisionless stellar systems.  相似文献

MHD in protostellar discs is modified by the Hall current when the ambipolar diffusion approximation breaks down. Here I examine the Balbus–Hawley (magnetorotational) instability of a weak, vertical magnetic field within a weakly ionized disc. Vertical stratification is neglected, and a linear analysis is undertaken for the case in which the wavevector of the perturbation is parallel to the magnetic field.
The growth rate depends on whether the initial magnetic field is parallel or antiparallel to the angular momentum of the disc. The parallel case is less (more) unstable than the antiparallel case if the Hall current is dominated by negative (positive) species. The less-unstable orientation is stable for χ ≲0.5, where χ is the ratio of a generalized neutral–ion collision frequency to the Keplerian frequency. The other orientation has a formal growth rate of the order of the Keplerian angular frequency even in the limit χ →0! In this limit the wavelength of the fastest-growing mode tends to infinity, so the minimum level of ionization for instability is determined by the requirement that a wavelength fit within a disc scaleheight. In the ambipolar diffusion case, this requires χ > v A c s; in the Hall case this imposes a potentially much weaker limit,      相似文献

We consider the evolution of magnetic fields under the influence of Hall drift and Ohmic decay. The governing equation is solved numerically, in a spherical shell with   r i / r o = 0.75  . Starting with simple free-decay modes as initial conditions, we then consider the subsequent evolution. The Hall effect induces so-called helicoidal oscillations, in which energy is redistributed among the different modes. We find that the amplitude of these oscillations can be quite substantial, with some of the higher harmonics becoming comparable with the original field. Nevertheless, this transfer of energy to the higher harmonics is not sufficient to accelerate significantly the decay of the original field, at least not at the   R B = O (100)  parameter values accessible to us, where this Hall parameter   R B   measures the ratio of the Ohmic time-scale to the Hall time-scale. We do find clear evidence though of increasingly fine structures developing for increasingly large   R B   , suggesting that perhaps this Hall-induced cascade to ever-shorter length-scales is eventually sufficiently vigorous to enhance the decay of the original field. Finally, the implications for the evolution of neutron star magnetic fields are discussed.  相似文献

Using two- and three-dimensional hydromagnetic simulations for a range of different flows, including laminar and turbulent ones, it is shown that solutions expressing the field in terms of Euler potentials (EP) are in general incorrect if the EP are evolved with an artificial diffusion term. In three dimensions, standard methods using the magnetic vector potential are found to permit dynamo action when the EP give decaying solutions. With an imposed field, the EP method yields excessive power at small scales. This effect is more exaggerated in the dynamic case, suggesting an unrealistically reduced feedback from the Lorentz force. The EP approach agrees with standard methods only at early times when magnetic diffusivity did not have time to act. It is demonstrated that the usage of EP with even a small artificial magnetic diffusivity does not converge to a proper solution of hydromagnetic turbulence. The source of this disagreement is not connected with magnetic helicity or the three-dimensionality of the magnetic field, but is simply due to the fact that the non-linear representation of the magnetic field in terms of EP that depend on the same coordinates is incompatible with the linear diffusion operator in the induction equation.  相似文献

We revisit the problem of clump formation due to thermal instabilities in a weakly ionized plasma with the help of a linear perturbation analysis, as discussed by Nejad-Asghar & Ghanbari. In the absence of a magnetic field and ambipolar diffusion the characteristic equation reduces to the thermal instability described by Field. We derive the critical wavelengths, which separate the spatial ranges of stability and instability. Contrary to the original analysis of Nejad-Asghar & Ghanbari, perturbations with a wavelength larger than the critical wavelength destabilize the cloud. Moreover, the instability regime of isentropic perturbations is drastically reduced. Isobaric modes with real values of the critical wavelength appear only if the density dependence of the cooling rate is more pronounced than the temperature dependence. Isentropic modes arise only if the power of the density in the cooling rate is smaller than 1/2, which is not fulfilled for CO cooling. We find that ambipolar diffusion is not a dominating heating process in molecular gas.  相似文献

We introduce a new code for computing time-dependent continuum radiative transfer and non-equilibrium ionization states in static density fields with periodic boundaries. Our code solves the moments of the radiative transfer equation, closed by an Eddington tensor computed using a long characteristics (LC) method. We show that traditional short characteristics and the optically thin approximation are inappropriate for computing Eddington factors for the problem of cosmological re-ionization. We evolve the non-equilibrium ionization field via an efficient and accurate (errors <1 per cent) technique that switches between fully implicit or explicit finite differencing depending on whether the local time-scales are long or short compared to the time-step. We tailor our code for the problem of cosmological re-ionization. In tests, the code conserves photons, accurately treats cosmological effects and reproduces analytic Strömgren sphere solutions. Its chief weakness is that the computation time for the LC calculation scales relatively poorly compared to other techniques  ( t LC∝ N ∼1.5cells)  ; however, we mitigate this by only recomputing the Eddington tensor when the radiation field changes substantially. Our technique makes almost no physical approximations, so it provides a way to benchmark faster but more approximate techniques. It can readily be extended to evolve multiple frequencies, though we do not do so here. Finally, we note that our method is generally applicable to any problem involving the transfer of continuum radiation through a periodic volume.  相似文献

We present the long‐term multi‐colour photometry of MM Her which is one of the first members of the RS CVn‐type of eclipsing binary systems. We took advantage of its photometry‐spanning 33 years to evaluate its long‐term variation, which is caused by the evolution of the activity structures located on the surface of the cooler component. In this study we found that the long‐term variation in the brightness, colour, and amplitude of seasonal light curves over the years could be represented by two periods: one of which is of around 22.5 years, and is similar to all in this regard, but the other is a period value of about 9.5 years for the brightness variation, and of about 7.5 years for the variation in colour and amplitude. The analysis of the spot minimum phases gives a migration period of approximately 7.8 years. We also presented a new light curve analysis solution, and improved its light elements in this study. SHASTA(Shaarp and smooth Transport Algorithm)是求解二维磁流体动力学问题的单一网格程序.

We study analytically a gravitational lens due to a deformed star, which is modelled by using a monopole and a quadrupole moment. Positions of the images are discussed for a source on the principal axis. We present explicit expressions for the lens equation for this gravitational lens as a single real 10th-order algebraic equation. Furthermore, we compute an expression for the caustics as a discriminant for the polynomial. Another simple parametric representation of the caustics is also presented in a more tractable form. A simple expression for the critical curves is obtained to clarify a topological feature of the critical curves; the curves are simply connected if and only if the distortion is sufficiently large.  相似文献

The Fokker-Planck equation which describes the motion of charged particles in a random electromagnetic field is derived from the Liouville equation by a new method. The size of the perturbing magnetic field, for the Fokker-Planck equation to be valid, is calculated in a regime appropriate for cosmic-ray diffusion.  相似文献

Using the standard equation for the slowdown of a neutron star, we derive a formula for the braking index via integration rather than the conventional differentiation. The new formula negates the need to measure the second time derivative of the rotation frequency, ν¨ . We show that the method gives similar braking indices for PSR B1509−58 and the Crab pulsar to those already in the literature. We point out that our method is useful for obtaining the braking indices of moderate-aged pulsars without the need for long, phase-connected timing solutions. We applied the method to 20 pulsars and discuss the implications of the results. We find that virtually all the derived braking indices are dominated by the effects of (unseen) glitches, the recovery from which corrupts the value of ν˙ . However, any real, large, positive braking index has implications for magnetic field decay and offers support to recent models of pulsar evolution.  相似文献

It is the subject of this article to determine diffusion coefficients of charged test particles perpendicular to a mean magnetic field analytically by starting directly from the Newton–Lorentz equation. We employ the so-called standard quasi-linear theory to test the well-known field line random walk limit. It is demonstrated in this article that there is an additional gyroresonant contribution which describes the scattering of the particle away from a single field line. For certain situations, this additional contribution is small and can be neglected. For other cases, we obtain new results such as a rigidity-dependent quasi-linear perpendicular mean free path. The results of this article are relevant for particles in the solar wind which move scatter free or nearly scatter free in the direction parallel to the magnetic field of the Sun.  相似文献

In this paper we describe a new approach for measuring the mean longitudinal magnetic field and net linear polarization of Ap and Bp stars. As was demonstrated by Wade et al., least-squares deconvolution (LSD; Donati et al.) provides a powerful technique for detecting weak Stokes V , Q and U Zeeman signatures in stellar spectral lines. These signatures have the potential to apply strong new constraints to models of stellar magnetic field structure. Here we point out two important uses of LSD Stokes profiles. First, they can provide very precise determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field. In particular, this method allows one frequently to obtain 1 σ error bars better than 50 G, and smaller than 20 G in some cases. This method is applicable to both broad- and sharp-lined stars, with both weak and strong magnetic fields, and effectively redefines the quality standard of longitudinal field determinations. Secondly, LSD profiles can in some cases provide a measure of the net linear polarization, a quantity analogous to the broad-band linear polarization recently used to derive detailed magnetic field models for a few stars (e.g. Leroy et al.). In this paper we report new high-precision measurements of the longitudinal fields of 14 magnetic Ap/Bp stars, as well as net linear polarization measurements for four of these stars, derived from LSD profiles.  相似文献
