From an analysis of the interstellar extinction we conclude that interstellar grains are of three main kinds: graphite spheres of radii 0.02 m making up 10% of the total grain mass, small dielectric spheres of radius about 0.04 m making up 25% of the mass, and hollow dielectric cylinders containing metallic iron with diameters of 2/3 m making up 45% of the mass. The remaining 20% consists of other metals and metal oxides. The main dielectric component of the grains appears to be comprised of organic material. 相似文献

The extinction curves of bacterial grains on which variable mass fractions of water-ice are condensed are calculated. Because
the ice band at 3.07 μm is stronger by a factor of about thirty than the OH and CH stretching bands in organic materials even
a small mass fraction of ice condensed inside or on the surface of the particles modifies and tends to obscure the characteristic
biological signature at ∼ 3.4 μm.

The interaction of supernova shocks and interstellar clouds is an important astrophysical phenomenon since it can result in
stellar and planetary formation. Our experiments attempt to simulate this mass-loading as it occurs when a shock passes through
interstellar clouds. We drive a strong shock using the Omega laser (∼5kJ)into a foam-filled cylinder with an embedded Al sphere(diameterD=120 μm) simulating an interstellar cloud. The density ratio between Al and foamis∼9. We have previously reported on the interaction
between shock and cloud, the ensuing Kelvin-Helmholtz and Widnall instabilities, and the rapid stripping of all mass from
the cloud. We now present a theory that explains the rapid mass-stripping. The theory combines (1) the integral momentum equations
for a viscous boundary layer, (2) the equations for a potential flow past a sphere, (3) Spalding's law of the wall for turbulent
boundary layers, and (4) the skin friction coefficient for a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. The theory gives as
its final result the mass stripped from a sphere in a turbulent high Reynolds number flow, and it agrees very well with our
experimental observations. 相似文献

The DuneXpress observatory will characterize interstellar and interplanetary dust in-situ, in order to provide crucial information
not achievable with remote sensing astronomical methods. Galactic interstellar dust constitutes the solid phase of matter
from which stars and planetary systems form. Interplanetary dust, from comets and asteroids, represents remnant material from
bodies at different stages of early solar system evolution. Thus, studies of interstellar and interplanetary dust with DuneXpress
in Earth orbit will provide a comparison between the composition of the interstellar medium and primitive planetary objects.
Hence DuneXpress will provide insights into the physical conditions during planetary system formation. This comparison of
interstellar and interplanetary dust addresses directly themes of highest priority in astrophysics and solar system science,
which are described in ESA’s Cosmic Vision. The discoveries of interstellar dust in the outer and inner solar system during
the last decade suggest an innovative approach to the characterization of cosmic dust. DuneXpress establishes the next logical
step beyond NASA’s Stardust mission, with four major advancements in cosmic dust research: (1) analysis of the elemental and
isotopic composition of individual interstellar grains passing through the solar system, (2) determination of the size distribution
of interstellar dust at 1 AU from 10 − 14 to 10 − 9 g, (3) characterization of the interstellar dust flow through the planetary system, (4) establish the interrelation of interplanetary
dust with comets and asteroids. Additionally, in supporting the dust science objectives, DuneXpress will characterize dust
charging in the solar wind and in the Earth’s magnetotail. The science payload consists of two dust telescopes of a total
of 0.1 m2 sensitive area, three dust cameras totaling 0.4 m2 sensitive area, and a nano-dust detector. The dust telescopes measure high-resolution mass spectra of both positive and negative
ions released upon impact of dust particles. The dust cameras employ different detection methods and are optimized for (1)
large area impact detection and trajectory analysis of submicron sized and larger dust grains, (2) the determination of physical
properties, such as flux, mass, speed, and electrical charge. A nano-dust detector searches for nanometer-sized dust particles
in interplanetary space. A plasma monitor supports the dust charge measurements, thereby, providing additional information
on the dust particles. About 1,000 grains are expected to be recorded by this payload every year, with 20% of these grains
providing elemental composition. During the mission submicron to micron-sized interstellar grains are expected to be recorded
in statistically significant numbers. DuneXpress will open a new window to dusty universe that will provide unprecedented
information on cosmic dust and on the objects from which it is derived. 相似文献

We investigate the possibilities for tracing interstellar extinction with the ESA's astrometric space mission GAIA. The analysis
is based on detailed simulations of the GAIA photometry, which are used to derive the distribution of interstellar matter
in a modelled Galaxy. We find that `small' diffuse clouds (diameter D = 4 pc, E
B-V = 0.06) will be easily traced with GAIA up to the distances of ∼ 800 pc. `Large' diffuse interstellar clouds (D = 10 pc, E
B-V = 0.13) will be located up to the distances of ∼ 2.5 kpc. This holds for the reddening tracers of spectral types O – K2 brighter
than V = 17. Inmost cases, due to their low spatial density, the early type stars (O– A2) cannot provide reliable information about
the distribution of interstellar matter. None of the reddening tracers measured by GAIA will provide reliable identification
of the individual interstellar clouds beyond the distances of ∼ 3 kpc. Therefore, we conclude that the information available
from photometric observations will be not sufficient for the detailed reconstruction of the 3-D distribution of Galactic interstellar
matter. It is therefore extremely important to define the new strategies which would allow to combine all the available information,
including the earlier space- and/or ground-based investigations, together with the information which will be provided by GAIA
itself (parallaxes, E
B-V etc.).

We present two new luminous blue variable (LBV) candidate stars discovered in the M33 galaxy. We identified these stars as
massive star candidates at the final stages of evolution, presumably with a notable interstellar extinction. The candidates
were selected from the Massey et al. catalog based on the following criteria: emission in H
α
, V<18./m 5 and 0.m 35 < (B - V) < 1.m 2. The spectra of both stars reveal a broad and strong H
α
emission with extended wings (770 and 1000 kms−1). Based on the spectra we estimated the main parameters of the stars. Object N45901 has a bolometric luminosity log(L/L⊙) = 6.0–6.2 with the value of interstellar extinction A
V
= 2.3 ± 0.1. The temperature of the star’s photosphere is estimated as T⋆ ∼ 13000–15000 K, its probable mass on the Zero
Age Main Sequence is M∼ 60–80 M⊙. The infrared excess in N 45901 corresponds to the emission of warm dust with the temperature Twarm ∼ 1000 K, and amounts
to 0.1%of the bolometric luminosity. A comparison of stellar magnitude estimates from different catalogs points to the probable
variability of the object N45901. Bolometric luminosity of the second object, N125093, is log(L/L⊙) = 6.3 − 6.6, the value of interstellar extinction is A
V
= 2.75 ± 0.15. We estimate its photosphere’s temperature as T⋆∼ 13000–16000K, the initial mass as M ∼ 90–120 M⊙. The infrared excess in N125093 amounts to 5–6% of the bolometric luminosity. Its spectral energy distribution reveals two
thermal components with the temperatures Twarm ∼ 1000K and Tcold ∼ 480 K. The [Ca II] λλ7291, 7323 lines, observed in LBV-like stars Var A and N93351 in M33 are also present in the spectrum of N 125093. These lines
indicate relatively recent gas eruptions and dust activity linked with them. High bolometric luminosity of these stars and
broad H
α emissions allow classifying the studied objects as LBV candidates. 相似文献

During the recent apparition of comet Hale—Bopp (1995 O1) near infrared photometric observations were carried out in the J,
H, K filter bands and also in the 3.0—3.4 μm region at the 1.2 m telescope at Gurushikkar, India. The effective temperature
of the comet was substantially higher than the equilibrium blackbody temperature. A mean superheat value of 1.83 was derived
in the post-perihelion phase which implies that a large fraction of the grain population are made up of small and hot grains
with radii <0.5 μm. High albedo values of ∼0.4 were also derived in the scattering angle range 135° to 160° which could explain
the unusual brightness of comet Hale—Bopp.

Using the CMOR system, a search was conducted through 2.5 years (more than 1.5 million orbits) of archived data for meteoroids
having unbound hyperbolic orbits around the Sun. Making use of the fact that each echo has an individually measured error,
we were able to apply a cut-off for heliocentric speeds both more than two, and three standard deviations above the parabolic
limit as our main selection criterion. CMOR has a minimum detectable particle radius near 100 μm for interstellar meteoroids.
While these sizes are much larger than reported by the radar detections of extrasolar meteoroids by AMOR or Arecibo, the interstellar
meteoroid population at these sizes would be of great astrophysical interest as such particles are more likely to remain unperturbed
by external forces found in the interstellar medium, and thus, more likely to be traceable to their original source regions.
It was found that a lower limit of approximately 0.0008% of the echoes (for the 3σ case) were of possible interstellar origin.
For our effective limiting mass of 1×10−8 kg, this represents a flux of meteoroids arriving at the Earth of 6×10−6 meteoroids/km2/h. For our 2σ results, the lower limit was 0.003%, with a flux of 2×10−5 meteoroids/km2/h. The total number of events was too low to be statistically meaningful in determining any temporal or directional variations. 相似文献

Although it is generally accepted that most, if not all, of the molecular hydrogen in interstellar space is formed through recombination reactions on grains, the exact mechanism by which this is accomplished is far from certain. In the past, great emphasis had been placed on the physical adsorption of H atoms on cold dielectric grains and their subsequent recombination and desorption as H2 molecules. However, a careful re-examination of the problem leads us to believe that a rate coefficient ofk10–17 cm3 s–1—the value usually quoted in the literature—is a very strong overestimate. The same thing can be said for the recombination of H atoms on graphite grains. Since two-body gas phase reactions are not sufficient by themselves to account for the observed abundances of H2, an alternate mechanism must exist. It is suggested that the chemisorption of hydrogen on transition metal grains may be just that formation mechanism. After separating the adsorption rate equations from those of desorption and using experimentally determined parameters, it is shown that transition metal grains can successfully catalyze as much H2 as the theoretical maximum predicted for cold ice grains, even though metal grains are probably less than 10% as abundant (by mass) than dielectrics. 相似文献

Conditions prevalent in dense molecular clouds are shown to favour the polymerization of H2CO molecules and the deposition of formaldehyde co-polymer mantles, with typical radii 10–5 cm, on smaller refractory grains. If a significant fraction of such co-polymer coated grains are expelled with systematic gas flows into the general interstellar medium, these moderately refractory grains may be responsible for the bulk of interstellar extinction and polarization at optical wavelengths. Mie calculations for a mixture consisting of iron, graphite and POM particles are presented as an example where POM grains of radii 0.15 dominate the extinction at optical wavelengths, providing a satisfactory overall fit to a range of extinction data. A size distribution of POM needles with a mean radius 0.15 also provides good agreement with data on interstellar linear as well as circular polarization. Suitably end-capped and stabilized co-polymer-coated grains, with either silicate or graphite cores, may survive at temperatures 450 K under interstellar ambient conditions and be responsible for the 10 emission feature in many sources. Theoretically computed band profiles of the 10 -feature in POM coated grains, in general, provide better agreement with observations than most types of silicate grains considered so far. We also note that an unexplained dip at 10 in the 8–12 feature of the infrared source OH 231.8+4.2 may be a signature of POM grains; likewise, a persistent 3.3 emission feature in many different types of infrared source could be attributed to the CH stretching mode in formaldehyde co-polymer grains. 相似文献

The interaction of X-rays with interstellar dust leads to small angle scattering. X-ray sources behind sufficiently dense
dust columns are therefore surrounded by haloes of faint and diffuse X-ray emission. Since these X-ray sources are also highly
absorbed, X-ray observations offer the unique opportunity to measure both components of interstellar extinction simultaneously.
This method provides an excellent means of determining interstellar gas to dust ratios, a differentiation between interstellar
and circumstellar matter, and, last but not least, a clue to the physical nature of dust itself. In particular we have a plausible
explanation why the supernova- explosion in Cassiopaea 300 years ago, of which we know today the remnant Cas A, has not been
seen. Furthermore, we find that dust grains must be ‘fluffy’ or porous with voids up to 70%.

A random, hydrogen-free, assembly of microscopic sp2 carbon chips, forming a macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic solid, is proposed as a model carrier for the ultraviolet (UV) interstellar extinction band. The validity of this model is based on the calculation of the Bruggeman average dielectric function of a mixture of the known parallel and perpendicular dielectric functions of graphite. The π absorption feature of Rayleigh-sized spheres of this mixture falls near 4.6 μm−1 (2175 Å), but its width is 1.5 μm−1 , somewhat larger than the astronomically observed average, 1 μm−1 . This is confirmed by measurements of the reflectance of an industrial material, polycrystalline graphite. A better fit to the interstellar feature position and width is obtained with a hypothetical material, having the same dielectric functions as natural graphite, except for less extended wings of the π resonance. Physically, this could result from changes in the electronic band structure due to previous thermal histories. In this model, the Frölich feature central wavelength depends only on the π resonance frequency, while its width depends only on the damping constant of the same resonance. This explains the range of observed feature widths at constant feature wavelength. 相似文献

In order for catalytic reactions to occur in interstellar dust clouds, it is necessary for the temperature of the grains to be about an order of magnitude hotter than usually calculated for grains of dielectric materials. However, transition metal (e.g., iron) grains should be fairly abundant, and because they absorb strongly in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the interstellar radiation field, they have equilibrium temperatures 133 K. This was determined by a new method which utilizes Semi-Empirical free electron theory parameters in the infrared, coupled with a reiteration scheme which takes into consideration the change of conductivity of the iron with temperature. 相似文献

The scientific community has expressed strong interest to re-fly Stardust-like missions with improved instrumentation. We
propose a new mission concept, SARIM, that collects interstellar and interplanetary dust particles and returns them to Earth.
SARIM is optimised for the collection and discrimination of interstellar dust grains. Improved active dust collectors on-board
allow us to perform in-situ determination of individual dust impacts and their impact location. This will provide important
constraints for subsequent laboratory analysis.
The SARIM spacecraft will be placed at the L2 libration point of the Sun–Earth system, outside the Earth’s debris belts and
inside the solar-wind charging environment. SARIM is three-axes stabilised and collects interstellar grains between July and
October when the relative encounter speeds with interstellar dust grains are lowest (4 to 20 km/s). During a 3-year dust collection
period several hundred interstellar and several thousand interplanetary grains will be collected by a total sensitive area
of 1 m2. At the end of the collection phase seven collector modules are stored and sealed in a MIRKA-type sample return capsule.
SARIM will return the capsule containing the stardust to Earth to allow for an extraction and investigation of interstellar
samples by latest laboratory technologies. 相似文献

We have investigated the effects of the size, shape, and alignment of small silicate spheroids on the wavelength positions of their absorption bands near 10 m and 20 m. These particles are believed to be a major constituent of interstellar grains and are reported to have been observed in circumstellar dust shells. It is found that the bands for spheroids can be displaced by 1 m towards longer wavelengths from their positions for corresponding spheres; and that a further, though smaller, displacement can be superimposed upon this by their subsequent alignment.Communications from the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, No. 178. 相似文献

We describe 5 to 18 μm broadband images and R ∼ 100 spectra of comet Hale-Bopp taken with SpectroCam-10 on the 5 m Hale telescope
during six runs between 1996 June and 1997 April. Our data show the gradual warming of dust grains as the comet approached
perihelion. In June, the 10 μm silicate emission feature was already stronger than observed in any other comet, and it increased
to about 3 times the continuum level near perihelion. Spectral structure attributed to a crystalline olivine grain component
remained relatively constant, but other features associated with pyroxenes appeared to vary with heliocentric distance.

SARG is a cross dispersed echelle spectrograph in operation since late spring 2000 at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo
(TNG) 3.5 m telescope, La Palma. SARG offers both single object and long slit (up to 26 arcsec) observing modes covering a
spectral range from λ = 0.37 up to1 μm, with resolution ranging from R = 29,000 up to R = 164,000. Cross dispersion is provided by means of a selection of four grisms; interference filters may be used for the
long slit mode (up to 26 arcsec). A dioptric camera images the cross dispersed spectra onto a mosaic of two 2048 × 4096 EEV
CCDs (pixel size: 13.5 μm) allowing complete spectral coverage at all resolving power for λ < 0.8 μm. In order to reach a
high wavelength calibration precision an iodine-absorbing cell is provided. A Distributed Active Temperature Control System
(DATCS) maintains constant the temperature of all spectrograph components at a preset value. Early results show that SARG
works according to original specifications in terms of wavelength coverage, efficiency (measured peak efficiency is about
13%),resolution (maximum resolution R = 164,000 using a 0.3 arcsec slit, R ∼144,000 using an image slicer), and stability (preliminary estimates of radial velocity accuracy is ∼3 m/s using the iodine
cell and ±150 m/s without the iodine cell).

A composite sample of NIR-selected galaxies having extended multicolor coverage has been used to probe the cosmological evolution
of the blue luminosity function and of the stellar mass function. The bright fraction of the sample has spectroscopic redshifts,
and the remaining fraction well-calibrated photometric redshifts. The resulting blue luminosity function shows an increasing
brightening with redshift respect to the local luminosity function. Hierarchical CDM models predictions are in agreement only
at low and intermediate redshifts but fail to reproduce the observed brightening at high redshifts (z ∼ 2–3). This brightening marks the epoch where starburst activity triggered by galaxy interactions could be an important
physical mechanism for the galaxy evolution. At the same time the NIR galaxy sample has been used to trace the evolution of
the cosmological stellar mass density up to ∼3. A clear decrease of the average mass density is apparent with a fraction ∼15%
of the local value at z ∼ 3. UV bright star-forming galaxies are substancial contributors to the evolution of the stellar mass density. Although
these results are globally consistent with Λ–CDM scenarios, they tend to underestimate the mass density produced by more massive
galaxies present at z > 2. 相似文献

We investigate the plausibility of using diffuse interstellar band at862 nm for tracing interstellar extinction with the ESA's
astrometric space mission GAIA. For this purpose we perform numerical tests to simulate the conditions of real observations,
covering a wide range of stellar parameters and different amounts of interstellar extinction. Our simulations indicate that
with the present Radial Velocity Spectrometer setup the uncertainty in color excess of σE(B-V)≤ 0.05 can be achieved only for the interstellar reddening tracers brighter than V ∼ 13. None of the plausible tracers can provide accurate color excesses (σ
E(B-V)
≤ 0.05) at the distances beyond 2 kpc. We therefore conclude that with the currently planned instrumentation onboard GAIA
this method can not be used as a stand-alone approach for probing interstellar extinction on the Galactic distance scales
within the framework of the GAIA mission.

A smooth surface layer of highly disordered olivine, (Mg, Fe)2SiO4, has been produced by exposure of polished, natural olivine to a dose of 5×1016 cm–2 of 1.5 MeV neon ions from a Van de Graaff accelerator. The dielectric functions of the disordered silicate in the wavelength range from 8 to 30 m have been determined from analysis of specular reflectance data, and extinction for Rayleigh particles of such disordered olivine has been calculated. Extinction measurements for amorphous olivine smoke collected on a substrate are also presented. The small particle extinctions of both kinds of structurally disordered olivine are shown to agree well with the main features of the absorption and emission spectra from interstellar grains in the 10 and 20 m region. 相似文献
