We present the status of an ongoing study for a high‐resolution near‐infrared echelle spectrograph for the 10.4‐m GTC (Gran Telescopio de Canarias) which will soon start operating at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma. The main science driver of this instrument, which we have baptized NAHUAL, is to carry out a high precision radial velocity survey of exoplanets around ultracool dwarfs. NAHUAL is being especially designed to achieve the highest possible accuracy for radial velocity measurements. The goal is to reach an accuracy of a few m/s. It is thus required that the instrument is cross‐dispersed and that it covers simultaneously a wide wavelength range. Absorption cells will be placed in front of the slit which will allow a simultaneous self‐reference similar to an iodine‐cell in the optical regime. It is planned to place the instrument at one of the Nasmyth platform of the GTC behind the Adaptive Optics system. Our current design reaches a maximum spectral resolution of λ/Δλ = 50000 with a slit width of 0.175 arcsec, and gives nearly complete spectral coverage from 900 to 2400 nm. This paper describes the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) under construction at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of the Australian National University (ANU) for the ANU 2.3 m telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory. WiFeS is a powerful integral field, double-beam, concentric, image-slicing spectrograph designed to deliver excellent throughput, wavelength stability, spectrophotometric performance and superb image quality along with wide spectral coverage throughout the 320–950 nm wavelength region. It provides a 25×38 arcsec field with 0.5 arcsec sampling along each of twenty five 38×1 arcsec slitlets. The output format is optimized to match the 4096×4096 pixel CCD detectors in each of two cameras individually optimized for the blue and the red ends of the spectrum, respectively. A process of “interleaved nod-and-shuffle” will be applied to permit quantum noise-limited sky subtraction. Using VPH gratings, spectral resolutions of 3000 and 7000 are provided. The full spectral range is covered in a single exposure at R=3000, and in two exposures in the R=7000 mode. The use of transmissive coated optics, VPH gratings and optimized mirror coatings ensures a throughput (including telescope atmosphere and detector) >30% over a wide spectral range. The concentric image-slicer design ensures an excellent and uniform image quality across the full field. To maximize scientific return, the whole instrument is configured for remote observing, pipeline data reduction, and the accumulation of calibration image libraries.  相似文献

We describe technical aspects of an astrometric and photometric survey of the North Celestial Cap (NCC), from the Pole (δ=90°) to δ=80°, in support of the TAUVEX mission. This region, at galactic latitudes from ∼17° to ∼37°, has poor coverage in modern CCD-based surveys. The observations are performed with the Wise Observatory one-meter reflector and with a new mosaic CCD camera (LAIWO) that images in the Johnson–Cousins R and I bands a one-square-degree field with sub-arcsec pixels. The images are treated using IRAF and SExtractor to produce a final catalogue of sources. The astrometry, based on the USNO-A2.0 catalogue, is good to ∼1 arcsec and the photometry is good to ∼0.1 mag for point sources brighter than R=20.0 or I=19.1 mag. The limiting magnitudes of the survey, defined at photometric errors smaller than 0.15 mag, are 20.6 mag (R) and 19.6 (I). We separate stars from non-stellar objects based on the object shapes in the R and I bands, attempting to reproduce the SDSS star/galaxy dichotomy. The completeness test indicates that the catalogue is complete to the limiting magnitudes.  相似文献

We describe the future night‐time spectrograph for the GREGOR solar telescope and present its science core projects. The spectrograph provides a 3‐pixel resolution of up to R = 87 000 in 45 échelle orders covering the wavelength range 390‐900 nm with three grating settings. An iodine cell can be used for high‐precision radial velocity work in the 500‐630 nm range. The operation of the spectrograph and the telescope will be fully automated without the presence of humans during night‐time and will be based on the successful STELLA control system. Future upgrades include a second optical camera for even higher spectral resolution, a Stokes‐V polarimeter and a link to the laser‐frequency comb at the Vacuum Tower Telescope. The night‐time core projects are a study of the angular‐momentum evolution of “The Sun in Time” and a continuation of our long‐term Doppler imaging of active stars (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The solar observational facilities at ARIES (erstwhile U.P. State Observatory, UPSO), Nainital, began in the sixties with the acquisition of two moderate sized (25 cm, f/66 off-axis Skew Cassegrain and 15 cm, f/15 refractor) telescopes. Both these systems receive sunlight through a 45 cm and 25 cm coelostat respectively. The backend instruments to these systems comprised of a single pass grating spectrograph for spectroscopic study of the Sun and a Bernhard-Halle filter, coupled with a Robot recorder camera for solar patrolling in respectively. With the advancement in solar observing techniques with high temporal and spatial resolution in and other wavelengths, it became inevitable to acquire sophisticated instrumentation for data acquisition. In view of that, the above facilities were upgraded, owing to which the conventional photographic techniques were replaced by the CCD camera systems attached with two 15 cm, f/15 Coude refractor telescopes. These CCD systems include the Peltier cooled CCD camera and photometrics PXL high speed modular CCD camera which provide high temporal and spatial resolution of ∼ 25 ms and ∼ 1.3 arcsec respectively.  相似文献

A 4-km synthesis radio telescope has recently been commissioned at Ootacamund, India for operation at 327 MHz. It consists of the Ooty Radio Telescope (530 m × 30 m) and 7 small antennas which are distributed over an area of about 4 km × 2 km. It has a coverage of about ± 40‡ in declination δ. The beam-width is about 40 arcsec × 90 arcsec at δ = 0‡ and about 40 arcsec × 50 arcsec at δ = 40‡. The sensitivity attained for a 5:1 signal-to-noise ratio is about 15 m Jy after a 10-hour integration. The observational programmes undertaken and some of the results obtained recently are summarized. The radio halo around the edge-on spiral NGC 4631 is found to have a larger scale-height at 327 MHz than is known at higher frequencies. Mapping of interesting radio galaxies at 327 MHz is being carried out; preliminary results for 0511-305 (∼2 Mpc) and 1333-337 (∼750 kpc) are summarized. The very-steep-spectrum radio source in the Abell cluster A85 is found to be resolved; since it has no obvious optical counterpart, it is conceivable that it is a remnant of past activity of a galaxy that has drifted away in about 109 years.  相似文献

The Spectral Irradiance Monitor (SIM) is a dual Fèry prism spectrometer that employs 5 detectors per spectrometer channel to cover the wavelength range from 200 to 2700 nm. This instrument is used to monitor solar spectral variability throughout this wavelength region. Two identical, mirror-image, channels are used for redundancy and in-flight measurement of prism degradation. The primary detector for this instrument is an electrical substitution radiometer (ESR) designed to measure power levels ∼1000 times smaller than other radiometers used to measure TSI. The four complementary focal plane photodiodes are used in a fast-scan mode to acquire the solar spectrum, and the ESR calibrates their radiant sensitivity. Wavelength control is achieved by using a closed loop servo system that employs a linear charge coupled device (CCD) in the focal plane. This achieves 0.67 arcsec control of the prism rotation angle; this is equivalent to a wavelength positioning error of δλ/λ = 150 parts per million (ppm). This paper will describe the scientific measurement requirements used for instrument design and implementation, instrument performance, and the in-flight instrument operation modes.  相似文献

Irshell, a mid-infrared echelle spectrograph developed through a collaboration between the University of Texas, the University of California Space Sciences Laboratory, and Hughes Aircraft, has been in regular use for astronomical observations for about five years. It is optimized for high spectral resolution (R10,000) observations of narrow spectral regions (/1/300) and compact sources (a few arcsec), and is sensitive in the 5–25 m region. A wide variety of astronomical objects have been studied. Observing techniques have been developed to achieve maximum sensitivity in those observations for which Irshell is best suited and to allow observations of wide spectral regions and extended objects. We discuss the observing techniques and show some of the data obtained.  相似文献

The source IRAS 03134 + 5958 identified by Iyengar & Verma (1984) on the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) prints with a nonstellar optical object with [P – R]≃ 5.3 ± 1.5 is near the edge of Lynds dark cloud No. 1384 and is either embedded in or behind the cloud. The galactic latitude of this source (b II = 2‡.3), its positionvis-a-vis the Lynds dark cloud, its nonstellar appearance, high [P – R] colour and its far-infrared spectrum, all suggest the possibility of its being a Herbig-Haro (HH) object. To test this possibility we undertook measurements of its proper motion and variability (two of the characteristic properties of HH objects). These yield μa = (3.6 ± 2.3) arcsec/century and μδ= (−1.2 ± 2.0) arcsec/century for its proper motion. The source reveals large variation in brightness between 1950 and 1954. Optical line studies of the source are required to confirm its classification as an HH object.  相似文献

High resolution (λ/δλ ∼ 20,000) spectra of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) in the 2–5 μm region were obtained during UT 2–5 March 1997 using CSHELL at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea. The heliocentric and geocentric distances of the comet were ∼1.1 AU and ∼1.5 AU,respectively. We detected emission lines of the gas-phase molecules H2O, 4, C2H6, C2H2, HCN, and CO and derived absolute production rates and relative abundances for all species. We also used the 2-dimensional nature of the CSHELL data to investigate the spatial distribution of the molecules and find evidence that CO was derived at least partly from an extended source in the coma. The High Efficiency and Resolution Canterbury University Large échelle Spectrograph (HERCULES) a fibre-fed échelle spectrograph that was designed and built at the University of Canterbury and has been in operation at Mt. John University Observatory since April 2001.HERCULES receives light from the f/13.5 Cassegrain focus of the 1 m McLellan telescope. Resolving powers of R = 41 000, 70 000 and 82 000 are available. An R2 200 × 400 mm échelle grating provides dispersion and cross-dispersion uses a large BK7 prism in double pass. The wavelength coverage is designed to be 380–880 nm in a single exposure. The maximum detective quantum efficiency of the fibre, spectrograph and detector system is about 18% in 2 arc second seeing. High wavelength stability (to better than 10 ms-1 in radial velocity) is achieved by installing the whole instrument in a large vacuum tank at 2–4 torr and by there being no moving parts. The tank is in a thermally isolated and insulated environment. The paper describes the design philosophy of HERCULES and its performance during the first year of operation. Because of the limitations both from the slit width and the slit length of the spectrograph used in high resolution work, the efficiency of a telescope, with an aperture between D0 = 9m and D0 = 55m, will be no better than that of a telescope with aperture D0. D0 can be identified as the maximum aperture of a ground-based telescope.  相似文献

It is shown (1) that the coefficients Ai of the limb darkening functions I(μ)/Icenter = P5 (μ) = ∑Ai μi (i = 0... 5; μ = cos ϑ), which had been published by Neckel and Labs (Solar Phys. 153, 91, 1994), can well be approximated by analytical functions of wavelength λ, and (2) that at first sight purely formal extrapolation of the functions P5(μ) to the very limb (μ = 0.0) is not meaningless: in combination with absolute intensities for the disk center these functions yield ‘limb intensities’ which all correspond to almost the same ‘limb temperature’, Tlimb≈4746 K. Together these results lead to ‘reference functions’ which can quickly yield rather reliable values of the Sun's continuum intensities, for any values of μ and λ.  相似文献

The optical identification programme is presented for a complete sample of 867 radio sources that were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) within 4.22 deg2 to S 1.4 GHz ≥ 0.135 mJy (5 σ). The area covered by the VLA survey is part of the regions of the sky that have been surveyed in the mid and far Infrared over the wavelength range 6.7–175 μmwith ISO as part of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). Optical identifications are made using the Automatic Plate-measuring Machine (APM) optical catalogue in E (∼ R) and O (∼ B) bands with approximate limiting magnitudes of ∼ 20.0 and 21.5 mag, respectively. For 220 out of the 867 radio sources, likely identifications are proposed with an a posteriori identification percentage of 25%. The sample of identification has a reliability of 96% and a completeness of 80%. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The CCD echelle spectra of the chromospherically active binary HR 5553 are obtained using the 2.16 m telescope with Coudé echelle spectrograph of Beijing Observatory in April 1996. The features of Ca II H & K, Hα, He I D3 and Ca II IRT2 (λ 8542 AA) & IRT3 (λ 8662 AA) are presented. The absolute fluxes of these lines which provide the useful information to study the chromospheric activity of HR 5553 are given. The fundamental parameters of the cool dwarf component of HR 5553 are determined using the analysis of the observed spectra with a resolution of R ≃ 60000 and signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 100 ∼ 300. A detailed spectroscopic analysis has yielded the following fundamental parameters: Effective temperature: Teff = 4881 K Surface gravity: log(g) = 3.65 Logarithmic iron abundance: [Fe/H] = –0.30 as well as that of other 12 metal elements (relative to the Sun) are listed in the Table II and Table III. Microturbulence: ζ = 1.20 km s-1. Magnetic field measurements of the cool dwarf component of HR 5553 have been made using the Stenflo-Lindegren statistical analysis and the profile-addition technique. The magnetic field strength and filling factor are obtained. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary We report 1.2, 1.6, 2.2 and 3.6 μm slit scan observations of the young low-luminosity stars Elias 22 (also known as GSS 31) in the Rho Ophiuchus dark cloud and Glass I in the Chamaeleon dark cloud. We discovered an infrared companion to Elias 22 at a projected separation of 2.0 arcsec (320 AU) and an optical/infrared companion to Glass I at a projected separation of 2.9 arcsec (410 AU). The companion of Elias 22 is a very cool optically almost invisible object (∼1000 K) less luminous than the primary, while the companion to Glass I is an optically visible late-type star with an infrared excess so large that it is actually bolometrically brighter than the primary. In both cases the infrared excess is likely to be due to hot circumstellar dust grains heated by a central young star (much more obscured in the case of Elias 22 than in the case of Glass I). We outline a new method to determine the mass ratio of such systems assuming that both components lie on an isochrone in the H-R diagram. If the companions are in a bound orbit, the estimated specific angular momentum exceeds or is of the order of 1021 cm2 s−1, only one order of magnitude larger than that of the Sun-Jupiter system. Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

The results of morphological and spectral study of the galaxies Kaz 5, Kaz 92, and Kaz 390 are presented. The observations were made on the 2.6-m telescope at the Byurakan Observatory with the VAGR microlenses spectrograph. Isophotes of the images of the galaxies are constructed in the , [NII] λλ6584 , 6548, and [SII] λλ6731, 6717 emission lines and in the continuum. The masses of Kaz 5 and Kaz 92 are determined to be 8.6 × 108 M and 6.1 × 109 M , respectively. The mass of the gaseous component in the centers of regions I and IV of Kaz 390, which encompass a 1 pixel area, are also determined. The morphological structure of the central region of Kaz 5 in the observed spectral range, λλ6400–6800?, differs completely from the structure of the same part of the galaxy observed with the 6-m and 2.5-m telescopes. It is shown that these differences in the structure in images of Kaz 5 are mostly explained by the comparatively low resolution of the telescope in combination with the VAGR spectrograph. Absorbing matter also contributes to this effect. It is also shown that a “deficit” of nitrogen has been observed in the region of Kaz 390 studied here (a circle of diameter 40″). A way to fully exploit the large collecting area of modern 8–10m class telescopes is high resolution spectroscopy. Many astrophysical problems from planetary science to cosmology benefit from spectroscopic observations at the highest resolution currently achievable and would benefit from even higher resolutions. Indeed in the era of 8–10m class telescopes no longer the telescope collecting area but the size of the beam – which is related to the maximum size in which reflection gratings are manufactured – is what mainly limits the resolution. A resolution‐slit product Rφ ≃ 40,000 is the maximum currently provided by a beam of 20 cm illuminating the largest grating mosaics. We present a conceptual design for a spectrograph with Rφ ≃ 80,000, i.e. twice as large as that of existing instruments. Examples of the possible exploitation of such a high Rφ value, including spectropolarimetry and very high resolution (R ∼ 300,000), are discussed in detail. The new concept is illustrated through the specific case of a high resolution spectropolarimeter for the Large Binocular Telescope.  相似文献

Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) was observed with camiras, the Saclay mid-infrared camera, mounted on the Nordic Optical Telescope (Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma), from April 14th to April 25th, 1997. This observing run was part of the European campaign devoted to Hale-Bopp observations from the Canary Islands (PI R. West). camiras spectro-imaging capabilities, achieved with a Circular Variable Filter (of spectral resolution R ≈ 50), were used to obtain spectra of the comet in the N atmospheric window (8–13 μm) over a large field of view (52″ × 78″), at a spatial resolution of ∼1 arcsec. Data were also collected at shorter wavelengths (in the L and M bands). The silicate dust feature around 10 μm is clearly apparent in the data. The shape of the feature varies continuously according to the position in the field. A dust model developed at Saclay in the framework of β-Pictoris dust disk studies was used to interpret the observations. The presence of both olivine and pyroxene with a high degree of crystallinity is needed to account for the observations. A change in the size distribution of the grains allows to reproduce the spatial change of the silicate feature according to the position in the field. The vertical stability character of the families of short and long period solutions around the triangular equilibrium points of the restricted three-body problem is examined. For three values of the mass parameter less than equal to the critical value of Routh (μ R ) i.e. for μ = 0.000953875 (Sun-Jupiter), μ = 0.01215 (Earth-Moon) and μ = μ R = 0.038521, it is found that all such solutions are vertically stable. For μ > (μ R ) vertical stability is studied for a number of ‘limiting’ orbits extended to μ = 0.45. The last limiting orbit computed by Deprit for μ = 0.044 is continued to a family of periodic orbits into which the well known families of long and short period solutions merge. The stability characteristics of this family are also studied.  相似文献
