Definition of low-grade metamorphic zones using illite crystallinity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Abstract Two major problems which exist in the use of illite crystallinity to define low-grade metamorphic zones are the variety of values chosen for the zone boundaries and the persistent use of three different indices of crystallinity. Although measurement techniques, which cause much of the interlaboratory variation, can be standardized, it is shown that there is, nevertheless, significant additional variation which demands calibration on standards. The greatest variations are due to choices of different absolute values of crystallinity to define zone boundaries. The problem of relating measurements between different indices is approached by fitting mathematical relationships to pairs of measurements from the same sample. A power–law relationship is a satisfactory fit to the Kubler–Weaver and Weaver–Weber pairs, while the Kubler–Weber indices are linearly related. These relationships are used to transform definitions of the diagenetic zone, anchizone and epizone from one index to the others, although they apply strictly only to the data set from which they are derived. This results in compatibility between the three zones and shows that previous definitions to the anchizone in different indices have been chosen at incompatible values. The boundaries of Kubler's anchizone (0.42 and 0.25 Δ2θ) are 0.4 and 0.215 Δ2θ in this study, which become 5.1 and 14.6 in the Weaver index and 278 and 149 in the Weber index. An error analysis shows that percentage errors in both Kubler and Weaver indices increase with crystallinity; the Kubler measurements are marginally preferred at all grades.  相似文献

Neoproterozoic evaporites occurring in the western part of the Lesser Himalaya in India, coeval to Pakistan, Iran and Oman evaporites, were investigated in order to understand the degree of metamorphism in them and in associated carbonates. The evaporite-bearing succession occurs in association of phyllite, quartzite and carbonate near the Main boundary Thrust. In order to learn the details about the burial history of these evaporite rocks, the Kübler illite crystallinity index (KI) was measured from the illite peaks of the clay minerals separated from the evaporite rocks and it indicated that this section has reached a maximum temperature up to ~300°C. Microthermometric measurements on fluid inclusions present in the associated dolomite show range of homogenization temperatures (Th), from 220 to 280°C, well within the temperature range of anchizone metamorphism. Additionally, dolomite shows a highly negative δ18O signature (mean, −15.5‰PDB), which is more likely related to diagenetic overprint from deep burial conditions rather than original precipitation from 18O-depleted seawater. The evaporites (sulfates and chloride) probably were transformed many times after their precipitation, but they have retained only the features developed during last one or two phases of alteration and deformation as they are continuously susceptible to minor changes in temperatures and stresses. The final temperature range of 42–78°C in sulfates and chloride gives thermal approximation estimate that is not in concordance with the thermal history of the basin and are likely related to conversion of anhydrite into gypsum and recrystallization of halite during exhumation. Highly negative oxygen isotopic composition, homogenization temperatures and KI values equivalent to a high anchizone metamorphism suggest a burial depth of ~10 km for these terminal Neoproterozoic evaporite-bearing sequences of the Lesser Himalaya.  相似文献

A multiple inter-laboratory calibration with illite Kübler?CFrey?CKisch ??crystallinity?? index and related standards is presented and compared with CIS standards used in the last two decades in very low-grade metamorphic studies. Comparing CIS values with KI standards the CIS values show a higher full width at half-high maximum peak intensity. In all cases due to broadening effects on the Kübler-index, zone-limits, specifically the diagenetic zone/anchizone boundary, a shift is produced in geographical dimensions in a metamorphic map-view. Combining standardised Kübler-index and vitrinite?Cbituminite reflectance measurements a coherent data set for compilation studies can be generated from the data of different research groups. This attempt to establish a unified database of independent measures to determine diagenetic/metamorphic zones with different analytical instrumental methods are indispensable to present metamorphic maps at very low-grade conditions. Given that the Kübler?CFrey?CKisch standards are difficult to preserve for the future and presumably they will be replaced with ongoing time by the CIS standards, a rescue of the laboratory settings from Frey, Kübler and others is done. After having compiled the Kübler-index??vitrinite reflectance zones in the Alps for the ??New Metamorphic Map of the Alps??, the presented calibration and inter-laboratory correlation gives a chance to save the KI values obtained by very different preparation procedures applied. This is an important step for further studies in an area like the Central Alps with a very high data grid. This correlation study will also make it possible that nearly 90?% of Kübler-index data from Switzerland can be compared in future work. Using the same calibration and preparation technique no fundamental problem in data comparison is achieved for the vitrinite/bituminite reflectance data operation. The main problem arises when rock maturity is compared with CIS calibrated Kübler-index values. Kübler-index values obtained by the so-called CIS calibration are not compatible with Kübler?CFrey?CKisch (árkai, Aprahamian, Brime, Ferreiro M?hlmann, H. Krumm, Leoni, Petschick) calibrated Kübler-Indices. Applying both standardisation approaches for field studies, partially different results are obtained.  相似文献

Abstract Fairly strong (r= 0.75–0.85) positive linear correlations were found between crystallinity indices (peak widths) measured on the first two basal reflections of chlorite and those of illite–muscovite in <2-μm fractions of a representative shale–slate–phyllite series from Palaeozoic and Mesozoic formations of northeast Hungary. The metamorphic grade ranges from late or deep diagenesis through anchizone to epizone conditions. Chlorite crystallinity values measured on air-dried and ethylene-glycol-solvated samples suggest that the effects of expandable interlayers are negligable, especially in the higher grade (~temperature) part of the series. However, the greater scattering of crystallinity values for the chlorite 001 reflection compared to those of the 002 reflection may be related to the effects of minor amounts of interlayered and/or discrete smectite and/or vermiculite. With increasing metamorphic grade and advancing equilibrium recrystallization, the chlorite compositions in different samples become more homogenous. No correlation exists between crystallinity and changes in chlorite composition as estimated from the intensity ratios of basal reflections. Hence an increase of domain size and a decrease of lattice distortion with increasing grade (~temperature) may be decisive factors affecting chlorite crystallinity. Chlorite crystallinity can be applied as a reliable regional, statistical technique complementary with, or instead of, the illite crystallinity method. The illite and chlorite crystallinity scales used here are related to Kübler's epi-, anchi- and diagenetic zones and correlated with coal rank, conodont colour alteration and mineral facies data. As the effects of the detrital white mica can be observed even in the <2-μm fractions of anchizonal metapelites, the anchizone boundaries determined solely on the base of ‘fixed’illite crystallinity values may vary with amounts of detrital and newly formed muscovite–illite. Hence a complex approach utilizing more than one method for determination of grade is preferred for petrogenetic purposes, even if relationships between crystallinity scales, coal rank and mineral facies also vary strongly in different tectonic settings and lithologies.  相似文献

Conodont colour alteration index (CAI) data in Upper Ordovician rocks from several areas of the Variscan domain in the Iberian Peninsula indicate conditions ranging from diagenesis to low-grade metamorphism. In most of the areas, where studies using other indicators, such as illite crystallinity (IC) or where vitrinite reflectance are lacking, the CAI method has permitted a preliminary estimation of the metamorphic grade. In the Almadén syncline (Central-Iberian Zone), where IC studies are available, the thermal conditions inferred from CAI data agree with those obtained by the IC method. In the Puertollano–Almuradiel syncline, the thermal interval obtained primarily from fluid inclusions (270–370°C) overlaps considerably with that obtained from CAI data (180–340°C). In general, cleavage in rocks is present in anchizonal or epizonal conditions, whereas in diagenetic conditions with CAI 2.5, cleavage is scarce. The conodont texture changes with increasing metamorphism, and apatite recrystallisation appears in general with CAI 5. Variation of CAI values within a single sample and/or within short stratigraphic distances observed at several localities is due to hydrothermal activity.  相似文献

Low-temperature metamorphic petrology occupies the P?CT field between sedimentary and metamorphic petrology. Two important pillars of low-temperature metamorphism are coal petrology and clay mineralogy. When low temperature petrology was established bridging a hiatus between the two classical geological disciplines of sedimentary geology and metamorphic petrology, geologists faced a need for the usage of different terminology tenets. Martin Frey and Bernard Kübler were two pioneers in low-grade metamorphic petrology. They focused their research on clarifying the relationships of clay mineralogy and organic petrology to metamorphic pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions. The ultimate aim of M. Frey and B. Kübler was to establish a correlation between clay indices and organic parameters for different geodynamic setting and therefore for various pressure?Ctemperature (P?CT) conditions occurring in low grade metamorphic terranes. For this purpose, a special attention was addressed to the correlation between the Kübler-Index (KI) and vitrinite reflectance (VR). All these efforts are dedicated to estimate the P?CT conditions and thus to gain insight into the geodynamic evolution of low-grade metamorphic terranes. B. Kübler and M. Frey honored here concentrated their studies to the Helvetic Central Alps area. The very low-grade Helvetic domain is therefore of basic interest of this paper. Ensuing the extensive compilation of data from the Helvetic domain, a reinterpretation of Kübler and Frey??s research is presented in the light of last decade??s scientific progress. A comprehensive dataset available enables to discriminate many factors influencing the Kübler-Index and organic-matter reflectance alongside to time, temperature and pressure. The correlation is restricted to the KI and organic matter reflectance (mostly VR) because most of the studies used both methods. Organic matter reflectance (OMR) includes data from vitrinite reflectance and bituminite reflectance measurements. Geodynamics has important control on the KI/VR (OMR) correlation. Tectonic units having a similar geodynamic evolution are featured by the comparable KI/OMR trends, related to the particular paleo-geothermal conditions. Obviously the KI/OMR correlations provide a mean to characterise geothermal gradients and metamorphic very-low-grade pressure?Ctemperature conditions. In terranes where high deformations rates are reported, exceeding the high anchizone conditions, strain promotes the kinetic effects of temperature and pressure on the KI versus OMR ratio.  相似文献

 The palaeotemperature distribution in the transition from diagenesis to metamorphism in the western nappes of the Cantabrian Zone (Somiedo, La Sobia and Aramo Units) are analysed by conodont colour alteration index (CAI) and illite crystallinity (IC). Structural and stratigraphic control in distribution of CAI and IC values is observed. Both CAI and IC value distributions show that anchizonal conditions are reached in the lower part of the Somiedo Unit. A disruption of the thermal trend by basal thrusts is evidenced by CAI and IC values. There is an apparent discrepancy between the IC and CAI values in Carboniferous rocks of the Aramo Unit; the IC has mainly anchizonal values, whereas the CAI has diagenetic values. Discrepant IC values are explained as a feature inherited from the source area. In the Carboniferous rocks of the La Sobia Unit, both IC and CAI indicate diagenetic conditions. The anchimetamorphism predated completion of emplacement of the major nappes; it probably developed previously and/or during the early stages of motion of the units. Temperature probably decreased when the metamorphosed zones of the sheets rose along ramps and were intensely eroded. In the context of the Iberian Variscan belt, influence of tectonic factors on the metamorphism is greater in the internal parts, where the strain and cleavage are always present, than in the external parts (Cantabrian Zone), where brittle deformation and rock translation are dominant, with an increasing role of the burial on the metamorphism. X-ray diffraction methods for estimating the metamorphic grade of diagenetic, anchizone and epizone in metapelites are reviewed and applied to samples from a 7000?m+ borehole in western China and surface samples from the surrounding Zoigê area. Kübler’s illite crystallinity (IC) measurements provide more consistent results than calculated values of percentage of illite in the I/S mixed layers and percentage of I/S mixed layers. Down-borehole IC values display a typical burial metamorphic relationship between stratigraphic level and IC. A method for preparing very low grade metamorphic maps is described, and isograds plotted on a regional geological map at selected values of IC, delineating a high temperature diagenetic zone, an anchizone, and an epizone. The map shows that IC values are controlled by stratigraphic level in the north of the study area (i.e. burial metamorphism), and proximity to an igneous intrusive body in the south (i.e. contact metamorphism).  相似文献

The pre-monsoon convective atmosphere over Kolkata (22.52°N, 88.37°E) during STORM field phase 2006–2008 is investigated using 12 UTC radiosonde data and thermodynamic indices. In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess the skill of various indices and parameters and to propose suitable threshold values in forecasting the occurrence of thunderstorm activity at Kolkata. The thermodynamic indices and parameters used in the present study are lifted index (LI), K index (KI), severe weather threat index (SWEAT), total totals index (TTI), convective available potential energy (CAPE), deep convection index (DCI), humidity index (HI), Boyden index (BI), dew point temperature at 850 hpa (DEW), relative humidity at 700 hpa (RH), and bulk Richardson number (BRN). Validation of the suggested threshold values of indices was conducted on the days of thunderstorm activity. It was found that one index alone cannot predict the occurrence of thunderstorm over Kolkata region. The present study suggests that the indices with highest skill for thunderstorm prediction are KI, DCI, SWEAT, DEW, HI, RH, LI, TTI, while the prediction efficiency is poor for CAPE, BRN, and BI. Observed values of these indices also reveal that scattered, multi-cellular thunderstorms are possible over Kolkata during pre-monsoon months.  相似文献

Instrumental settings for determination of illite/muscovite 'crystallinity'(half-height width of the 10-Å X-ray diffraction peak) and the limits of the anchimetamorphic zone adopted by various authors fall into several groups.
The variation in the limiting peak widths between the authors that have adopted Kubler's Neuchâtel boundary values of 0.42° and 0.25°Δ2θ can be interpreted in terms of variation in the instrumental settings. The choice of time constants higher than those given by the formula causes peak broadening; this effect is particularly marked at high scan rates. The peak broadening is by constant increments that are virtually independent of the absolute peak width.
The differences between the Kubler (Neuchâtel)-derived limiting values and some other scales are appreciably greater than can be accounted for by these differences in instrumental settings: many of these scales are not equivalent. In particular, the limits adopted by Dunoyer de Segonzac (1969) and subsequent workers at Strasbourg are too broad; their anchizone represents a range of grades of metamorphism lower than that of Kubler, widely overlapping the latter's 'diagenetic'zone. Those adopted by some other, mainly French, authors are too narrow.
The limits of the anchizone should be calibrated by inter-laboratory standards, and the instrumental settings should be specified in full.  相似文献

Late Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks in the Narragansett basin were metamorphosed (lower anchizone to sillimanite grade) during late Paleozoic regional metamorphism at ca. 275–280 Ma. Twenty-five variably sized concentrates of detrital muscovite were prepared from samples collected within contrasting low-grade areas (diagenesis — lower greenschist facies). Microprobe analyses suggest that the constituent detrital grains are not chemically internally zoned; however, some grains within several concentrates display very narrow (<25 m), compositionally distinct, low-grade, epitaxial peripheral overgrowths. Detrital muscovite concentrates from the lower anchizone are characterized by internally concordant 40Ar/39Ar age spectra which define plateau ages of ca. 350–360 Ma. These are interpreted to date post-Devonian (Acadian) cooling within proximal source areas. Concentrates from lower grade sectors of the middle anchizone display slightly discordant spectra in which apparent ages systematically increase from ca. 250–275 Ma to define intermediate- and high-temperature plateaus of ca. 360–400 Ma. Detrital muscovite within samples from higher grade sectors of the middle anchizone and the upper anchizone are characterized by systematic low age discordance throughout both low-and intermediate-temperature increments. High-temperature ages only range up to ca. 330 Ma. Six size fractions of detrital muscovite from a sample collected within the lower greenschist facies have similarly discordant spectra, in which, apparent ages increase slightly throughout the analyses from ca. 250 Ma to 275 Ma. The detrital muscovite results are interpreted to reflect variable affects of late Paleozoic regional metamorphism. However, it is uncertain to what extent the systematic low age spectra discordance reflects intracrystalline gradients in the concentration of 40Ar and/or experimental evolution of gas from relatively non-retentive epitaxial overgrowths. However, low age discordance occurs regardless of the extent of epitaxial overgrowth. Intermediate-temperature increments evolved during 40Ar/39Ar whole-rock analyses of five slate/phyllite samples are characterized by internally consistent apparent K/Ca ratios. These are attributed to gas evolved from constituent, very fine-grained white mica. Samples from lower grade portions of the middle anchizone are characterized by intermediate-temperature apparent ages which systematically increase from ca. 275–300 Ma to ca. 360–375 Ma before evolution of a high-temperature contribution from detrital plagioclase feldspar. This age variation may reflect partial late Paleozoic rejuvenation of very fine-grained detrital material with a source age similar to that for the detrital muscovites. Slate/phyllite samples from upper sectors of the middle anchizone and from the upper anchizone were completely rejuvenated during late Paleozoic metamorphism and record intermediate-and high-temperature plateau ages of ca. 270–290 Ma. These data document that metamorphic conditions of the lower to middle biotite zone (ca. 325–350 °C) are required to completely rejuvenate intracrystalline argon systems of detrital muscovite. Therefore, the 40Ar/39Ar dating method may be useful in determination of detrital muscovite provenance and in resolution of the metamorphic evolution of low-grade terranes.  相似文献

The low-temperature thermal history of Paleozoic and Precambrian shales and slates was studied in detail along a NW–SE transect between Ufa and Beloretzk in the western fold-and-thrust belt of the southern Urals, Russia. The aim of the investigations was to compare four thermal parameters, namely illite and chlorite crystallinity, vitrinite reflectance, and Conodont color alteration index (CAI), in order to quantify the finite (i.e. maximum) thermal grade. The transect extends from Devonian to Permian sedimentary units of the pre-Uralian foredeep, crossing Precambrian siliciclastic and carbonate units of the Bashkirian megaanticlinorium into the Paleozoic units of the Ural-Tau antiform. In general, the four methods indicate similar metamorphic grades of the samples. The finite thermal grade ranges from lower diagenesis (Ro=0.9%, CIS-FWHMill001ad=0.770 Δ°2Θ, CIS-FWHMchl002ad=0.447 Δ°2Θ, CAI=1.5) in the pre-Uralian foredeep to epizone (CIS-FWHMill001ad=0.243 Δ°2Θ, CIS-FWHMchl002ad=0.252 Δ°2Θ, CAI=6) in the eastern part of the Bashkirian mega-anticlinorium and the Zilair synclinorium. All parameters show a sudden change in value at thrust boundaries and an increase in metamorphic grade with stratigraphic age within structural units. In comparison, the westernmost Precambrian units of the Ala-Tau-anticlinorium are characterized by thermal grades of lower diagenesis. Magmatic dikes cause a wide variation of the thermal grade in the western part of the Bashkirian megaanticlinorium. Also in areas with an intensive cleavage development (Zilair synclinorium) the finite thermal grade shows a stronger relationship towards the deformation than the stratigraphic position.  相似文献

This study uses clay mineral assemblages, illite ??crystallinity?? (IC), chlorite ??crystallinity?? (CC), illite polytypes, the b cell-dimension of K-white mica, mineral geothermo-geobarometers and homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions to investigate the transition from diagenesis to metamorphism in a 7?km thick Triassic flysch sequence in the well Hongcan 1, eastern Tibetan plateau. The 7,012.8?m deep borehole penetrated flysch of Upper to the Middle Triassic age and represents a unique chance to characterize low temperature metamorphic processes in an unusually thick sedimentary sequence developed on thickened continental crust. Mineral assemblage analysis reveals a burial metamorphic pattern with kaolinite and chlorite/smectite mix-layer phases present in the upper 1,500?m, and illite/smectite mixed-layer phases extending to a depth of 3,000?m. The metamorphic index mineral, graphite, was detected in sedimentary rock below 5,000?m using Raman spectroscopy. There exists a good correlation between IC and CC within the prograde burial sequence; with CC anchizonal boundaries of 0.242 and 0.314°2?? (upper and lower boundaries, respectively) corresponding to Kübler??s IC limits at 0.25 and 0.42°2??. Illite polytypism also shows an increase in the 2M 1 polytype with increasing depth, with ca. 60?% 2M 1 abundance compared to the 1M type at the surface, to 100?% 2M 1 at the bottom of the borehole. Fluid inclusion analysis show HHC-rich bearing fluids correspond to the diagenetic zone, CH4-rich bearing fluids appear at transitional zone from diagenetic to low anchizone and H2O-rich bearing fluids mark the high anchizone to epizone. Based on chlorite chemical geothermometer, calcite?Cdolomite geothermo-barometers as well as homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions, a paleotemperature range of 118?C348?°C is estimated for the well with a pressure facies of low to intermediate type.  相似文献

A different approach to investigate the origin of fluids, temperature conditions, age of hydrothermal activity of mineralization in the Biga Peninsula, (Koru, Tesbihdere and Kumarlar) employed mineralogical (illite Kübler Index, b cell dimension, polytype) and geochemical (major, trace/REE, O–H stable isotope and Rb/Sr dating) methods. The Kübler Index (KI) values of illites indicate different temperature conditions, such as low temperature (high-grade diagenesis) for Koru deposit, and high temperature (anchizone) for the Tesbihdere and Kumarlar deposits. The textural, mineralogical and geochemical data from illites show that these have potential for estimating the age of hydrothermal activity and fluid characteristics. Both mineralogical (high grade diagenetic to anchizonal KI, 1M polytype, low d060 values) and geochemical (similar major and trace element composition to host-rocks, low octahedral Mg + Fe contents, oxygen and hydrogen isotope composition) data are compatible with commonly known hydrothermal illites. Stable isotope data of illites are well matched to similar data from fluid inclusions, which indicate mainly magmatic fluids. The Rb/Sr age (22.4 ± 2.3 Ma: latest Oligocene and lowest Miocene) of the illites coincides with plutonic intrusions that are the main instigators of hydrothermal activities related to the extensional tectonic regime in the Biga Peninsula. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) is one of the most widely known index method for identification of rock abrasivity. It is a simple and fast testing method providing reliable information on rock abrasiveness. In this study, the relationships between the CAI and some rock properties such as uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), point load strength, Brazilian tensile strength and Schmidt rebound hardness, and equivalent quartz content (EQC) are examined. The relationships between the CAI and drill bit lifetime is also investigated and the type of drill bit wear observed is mentioned. Additionally, the CAI is modeled using simple and multiple linear regression analysis based on the rock properties. Drill bit lifetime is also modeled based on the CAI. The results show that the CAI increases with the increase of the UCS, point load strength, Brazilian tensile strength, L-type and N-type Schmidt rebound hardness, and the EQC. It is concluded that the higher and the lower bit lifetime are obtained for marl and andesitic-basaltic formation, respectively. Moreover, flushing holes, inserted button, button removal, and failures of button on the bits are determined as the type of drill bit wear. The modeling results show that the models based on the UCS and the EQC give the better forecasting performances for the CAI.  相似文献
