The well known Clovis and Plainview archaeological sites of New Mexico and Texas have yielded new data on regional late Quaternary geologic, paleoclimatic, and pedologic histories. Eolian sedimentation at the Clovis site from about 10,000 to less than 8500 yr B.P. was followed by the formation of a cumulic soil between 8500 and 5000 yr B.P. Episodic eolian and slope wash deposition then culminated in massive eolian sedimentation about 5000 yr B.P. after which a Haplustalf formed then was subsequently buried by part of a dune system within the last 1000 yr. At the Plainview site, a basal stream gravel contains Plainview cultural material (ca. 10,000 yr B.P.), which is followed by a localized early Holocene lacustrine deposit, two eolian deposits (the younger dating to about 5000 yr B.P.), and a marsh deposit which slowly accreted as an Argiustoll formed in the younger eolian unit. The data indicate that on the Southern High Plains (1) between 12,000 and 8500 yr B.P. sedimentation varied from site to site, (2) there was a regional climate change toward warming and drying in the early Holocene, (3) two episodes of severe drought apparently occurred in the middle Holocene (6500 to 4500 yr B.P.), (4) between 4500 yr B.P. and the present an essentially modern climate existed, but with several shifts toward aridity within the last 1000 yr, (5) argillic horizons have developed in late Holocene soils, (6) clay illuviation can occur in calcareous soils, and (7) long-distance correlation of Holocene stratigraphy in the region is possible, particularly with the aid of soil morphology.  相似文献

Eleven well-drained soils formed in till parent materials of varying ages in northeastern Pennsylvania were studied to determine changes in the soils with time. Four profiles (three Lackawanna and one Bath) were formed in Woodfordian till (15,000 yr B.P.), and two (Leck Kill) were formed in Altonian till (>28,000, <75,000 yr B.P.). The remaining five (Allenwood) were formed in pre-Wisconsinan till (>75,000 yr B.P.). In these soils, the extractable iron oxide, extractable aluminum oxide, and kaolinite contents increase with age, as do the total clay and fine/total clay ratio. With increasing age, the maximum accumulation of these constituents is found deeper in the profile. The extractable silicon oxide distribution is constant with depth, but it decreases in overall amount with time. Gibbsite is found only in small amounts in the A horizon of Altonian soils, but occurs throughout the profile of pre-Wisconsinan soils, although only in small amounts. In general, differences were found in these soils which separated them into three groups representing varying degrees of soil development. A regression equation was derived to predict the age of soils formed from the Altonian till based on a “clay accumulation index” value for soils of known Woodfordian and Holocene ages. The equation log Y = 1.80 + 0.992(logX) best fit the data, with an r2 value of 0.913. Using this equation, a mean age of 41,000 yr was calculated for the Altonian soils. This date was used to derive a second equation to predict ages for pre-Wisconsinan soils. The equation with the highest r2 value (0.934) was log Y = 1.81 + 0.998(logX). Dates for soils developed in the White Deer till and the Laurelton till of the pre-Wisconsinan stage were calculated to be 86,000 and 91,000 yr B.P., respectively. These dates fall within ages estimated for the Sangamon Interglaciation and thus would appear to be too young for pre-Sangamonian materials. The probable reason for the “too-young age” is that the C-horizon material of the pre-Wisconsinan soils was weathered and did not provide an accurate estimate of clay accumulation for the prediction equation.  相似文献

Systematic variations in soil characteristics related to degree of soil profile development in part of the Middle Gangetic Plain suggest a soil chronoassociation similar to the soil chronosequences observed on some river terrace formed by tectonic uplift. This chronoassociation has five members QG1 to QG5, the youngest being QG1 (< 500 yr BP). Variations in degree of horizon differentiation, profile thickness, clay accumulation, plasma separation, argillan thickness, weathering stage and day mineralogy have been used to determine the degree of soil development.
Pedogenic processes active in these soils are decalcification, translocation of clay, sesquioxide and organic matter, plasma separation and weathering of minerals. The amount and variability of clay minerals are significantly related to the type and duration of pedogenesis in different parts of the area. The oldest soils with pedogenic calcite (10 000 yr BP) developed during a dry period. Since 8000 yr BP climatic conditions of higher rainfall and better drainage have prevailed in the area.
Neotectonic movements have tilted the Gandak megafan block and have caused shifting of the Gandak river to the east about 105 km from its original course, leaving behind numerous channels, ponds, lakes and other features of impeded drainage.  相似文献

Alluvial fans are one of the most important landforms in geomorphological and paloenvironmental studies. The objective of this study was the application of clay mineral assemblages and micromorphological properties of the studied paleosols in the geomorphic surfaces of an alluvial fan in the eastern Isfahan as proxies for paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic changes. Micromorphology, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy approaches were used to study the representative pedons. The results indicated that the illuviation process in the calcareous soils of the arid regions of the eastern Isfahan was probably in response to Quaternary moist conditions. There was no significant difference between clay coating properties of the studied relict and buried paleosols. Clay mineralogical study suggested that kaolinite and illite were inherited from the parent materials, while smectite and palygorskite were formed in the soil environment. Paleoargillic horizon was characterized by smectite and calcic (especially the calcrete) horizons were dominated by palygorskite. Palygorskite was accumulated by both neoformation and illuviation processes. High clay content, high intensity of smectite peak, and activity of the illuviation process in paleoargillic horizon demonstrated the seasonality of climate (rainfall) even in the moist periods of Quaternary in Central Iran. Clay mineralogical assemblages suggested a trend of increasing environmental aridity in the study area. This study, therefore, highlighted the role of clay mineralogical investigations in arid lands’ geomorphological and paleoenvironmental researches.  相似文献

Drinking water treatment residuals (alum) are waste products of water purification that have potential for environmental remediation as a soil amendment and a potential plant growth medium. In this study, the influence of added Drinking water treatment residuals on the extractability and availability of phosphorus to plants; determination of the agronomic rate of alum to different agricultural soils and evaluation of the alum as ameliorating material for soil conditions and plant growth were investigated. In all studied soils, increasing drinking water treatment residuals rate up to 30 g/kg significantly increased dry matter yield. Application of 10, 20 and 30 g/kg alum significantly increased plant P concentrations in the plant materials (shoots and roots) taken from clay, sandy and calcareous soils. Further increase in alum application rate has resulted in negative significant impact on plants P concentration, especially in clay and calcareous soils, but in sandy soils the increase in phosphorusconcentration extended to 40 g/kg alum rate. Application of alum at rates up to 30 g/kg significantly increased available phosphorus concentrations of the three studied soils. However, application of alum at a rate of 40 g/kg to clay and calcareous soils significantly decreased available phosphorus concentrations. Combined analyses of all soils and alum rates studied clearly indicated significant relationship between available phosphorus concentration and phosphorus uptake (r = 0.87, P < 0.001). Based on our experiment results, the rate of 30 g/kg is considered the best application rate of alum because of its positive effects on plant dry matter. Our study clearly demonstrates that alum has potential as a soil amendment to increase plant growth; however, more research is needed to determine beneficial and / or detrimental aspects of this practice under field conditions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate total mercury concentration and its lithogenic and exogenic fractions in some calcareous soils of western Iran, where water contamination and bioaccumulation of mercury have been reported in the bottomland’s reservoir. In particular, we investigated soil physico-chemical properties and weathering conditions related to lithogenic and exogenic fractions of mercury for two groups of calcareous soils with a known comparative pedological evolution and weathering condition that was evident in the presence or absence of underlying layers of accumulated clay. Our results showed that the total mercury content of the studied soils ranged from 45.40 to 830.36 with a mean of 486.81 μg kg?1. Furthermore, calculation of mercury fractions revealed that lithogenic and exogenic fractions vary slightly according to the three reference elements (Fe, U and Nb) used in the calculations for the two groups of studied soils. The results also illustrated that most of the mercury content is of exogenic origin; therefore, total mercury variations are closely related to the content of exogenic mercury, while the lithogenic fraction exhibited no relationship with total mercury concentration. Moreover, application of the weathering indexes of Parker and the CaO/ZrO2 molar ratio supported the dependence of lithogenic mercury accumulation on weathering intensity in the studied calcareous soils. However, the significance of this relationship is stronger for more weathered calcareous soils; in such cases, fine-particle fractions are more developed, which encourages carrier phases such as organic materials and iron oxyhydroxides to become involved in more efficient fixation of mercury. Nevertheless, the formation of underlying layers of accumulated clay, i.e. argillic horizons, may restrain fixation of exogenic mercury by limiting its atmospheric input.  相似文献

针对淮北平原地区浅表层沉积土典型地质单元,选取代表性试验区域,开展了螺旋板载荷、平板载荷和静力触探等原位测试,分析了含钙质结核黏土、新近沉积粉土、粉砂3种地基的承载力特性,重点探讨了不同类型土体的螺旋板载荷试验p-s曲线特征、承载力特征值确定方法和值域范围,并与静探和平板载荷试验数据进行对比,分析其相关关系和变化规律。研究结果表明:一般性黏土、粉质黏土和粉土的承载力较低,钙质结核黏性土和粉砂的承载力相对较高,值域范围较宽,密实程度是决定粉土、粉砂承载力大小的主要因素。螺旋板载荷试验能较好的反映多元互层地基土体力学性质的变化特征,采用等应变控制法可达到快速、分层检测的目的,并通过等应力控制法对比试验验证了其可靠性。最后通过与平板载荷试验结果进行线性拟合,给出了螺旋板载荷试验确定淮北平原浅表层地基承载力的经验公式。  相似文献

The time at which deserts established their current arid or hyper-arid conditions remains a fundamental question regarding the history of Earth. Cosmogenic isotope exposure ages of desert pavement and welded, calcic–gypsic–salic Reg soils that developed on relatively flat alluvial surfaces ~2 Ma ago in the Negev Desert indicate long geomorphic stability under extremely dry conditions. Over a short interval during their initial stage of development between 1–2 Ma, these cumulative soils are characterized by calcic soils reaching maximum stage III of carbonate morphology. This interval is the only period when calcic soil horizons formed on stable abandoned alluvial surfaces in the southern Negev Desert. Since ~1 Ma pedogenesis changed toward more arid soil environment and the formation of gypsic–salic soil horizons that were later followed by dust accumulation. The dichotomy of only moderately-developed calcic soil (stages II–III) during a relatively long time interval (105–106 years) indicates an arid environment that does not support continuous development but only occasional calcic soil formation. The very low δ18O and relatively high δ13C values of these early pedogenic carbonates support soil formation under arid climatic conditions. Such an environment was probably characterized by rare and relatively longer duration rainstorms which occasionally allowed deeper infiltration of rainwater and longer retention of soil moisture. This, in turn enabled the growth of sparse vegetation that enhanced deposition of pedogenic carbonate. At ~1 Ma these rare events of slightly wetter conditions ceased and less atmospheric moisture reached the southern Negev Desert leading to deposition of soluble salts and dust deposited in the soils. The combination of long-term hyperaridity, scarcity of vegetation and lack of bioturbation, salts cementation, dust accumulation and tight desert pavement cover, has protected the surfaces from erosion forming one of the most remarkably stable landscapes on Earth, a landscape that essentially has not eroded, but accumulated salt and dust for more than 106 yr.  相似文献

Dust and processes of raindrop formation in the clouds play a very important role in the climatic evolution of tropical north Africa. Sedimentologic, stratigraphic, pedologic, geomorphologic, and palynologic data converge to show that a major environmental change occurred in tropical Africa about 7000 yr B.P. In the Sudanian and Sudano-Guinean zones (wet tropical zone), from 15,000 to 7000 yr B.P., rivers deposited mostly clay, while from 7000 to 4000 yr B.P. they deposited mostly sand. During the first period, pedogenesis was vertisolic (montmorillonite dominant), associated with pollen belonging mostly to vegetation typical of hydromorphic soils, while during the second period pedogenesis was of ferruginous type (kaolinite dominant) with pollen belonging mostly to vegetation typical of well-drained soils. The great change near 7000 yr B.P. is linked chiefly to a major hydrological change that appears related to a change in the size of raindrops: from fine rains associated with considerable atmospheric dust (raindrop diameter essentially less than 2 mm) to the second period associated with thunderstorm rains (raindrop diameter mostly greater than 2 mm). The size of raindrops is related particularly to cloud thickness and dust concentration in the troposphere. Thunderstorm activity is influenced also by fluctuations of the atmospheric electricity, modulated by the sun.  相似文献

Micromorphological characteristics of four paleosol levels of the Manonga - Wembere deposits in Central Tanzania indicate periods of wetter climate in the Pliocene than at present. The stratigraphy of the studied section shows a series of lacustrine calcareous clay sediments alternating with gravel, sand and silt. The sediments are believed to have been deposited in the Manonga - Wembere paleolake environment. Paleosols intercalate these sediments and were formed when stable landscapes developed on former lake beds during regression periods. Micromorphological features of the paleosols indicate strong clay illuviation of red to yellow typic clay coating and some Fe-Mn hydoxide hypocoatings in voids and channels. The groundmass consists of either an accumulation of bioturbated yellow to red clay coating fragments or an argillic red to yellow groundmass of clay mass. Such an illuviation and its associated groundmass is comparable to intense clay illuviation fronts that are found in present-day calcareous sediments of warm and wet climates. The paleosol levels therefore represent wetter climatic conditions than today in the area during the Lower Pliocene.  相似文献

Sewage sludge usually contains significant amount of Zinc (Zn) and is widely used in agricultural lands. A laboratory experiment was performed to determine Zn desorption characteristics in unamended and amended soils with sewage sludge. Ten calcareous soils were amended with 1 % (w/w) sewage sludge. Amended and unamended soils were incubated at field capacity at 25 ± 1 °C for 1 month. After incubation, the kinetics of Zn desorption in amended and unamended soils were determined by successive extraction with DTPA-TEA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-triethanolamine) in a period of 1–504 h at 25 ± 1 °C. The results of kinetics study showed that extracted Zn and desorption rate constants in the amended soils were significantly (p < 0.01) higher than in the unamended soils. The results showed that Zn desorption increased from 201 to 343 % in amended soil with respect to unamended soils. The amounts of desorbed Zn in the unamended soils ranged from 3.73 to 8.79 mg kg?1, while the amounts of desorbed Zn in amended soils ranged from 11.47 to 17.66 mg kg?1. Desorption kinetics of Zn in two soils conformed fairly well to first-order, parabolic diffusion and power function equations. The results of stepwise regression analysis indicated that calcium carbonate equivalent and clay could be used to estimate Zn desorption characteristics in DTPA-TEA solution in the amended and unamended calcareous soils. It can be concluded that sewage sludge applied to calcareous soils may enhance the source of Zn for the plants.  相似文献

文章采用有序批试验,就岩溶区两种典型石灰土(棕色、黑色石灰土)对Cd2+的吸附行为进行研究。试验结果表明:石灰土对重金属Cd2+具有较强的吸附能力(平均吸附率范围89.84~98.84),黑色石灰土的吸附能力高于棕色石灰土,吸附量随平衡浓度的增加而增大;Langmuir和Freundlich方程均能很好地描述两种石灰土对Cd2+的等温吸附过程,Freundlich方程拟合最优;两种石灰土吸附镉的动力学特征相似,吸附过程可分为快速反应、慢速反应和吸附平衡3个阶段,棕色石灰土对Cd2+吸附动力学的最优模型为Elovich方程和双常数方程(R>0.9),黑色石灰土仅在Cd2+初始浓度为100 mg/L条件下,Elovich方程、双常数方程和W-M方程的模拟达到较显著水平(R>0.8);有机质、碳酸钙含量及CEC值是影响石灰土对Cd2+吸附能力的主控因素,铁、铝、硅氧化物含量对Cd2+吸附影响不大;综合热力学、动力学及影响因素分析认为石灰土对Cd2+吸附机理包括土壤颗粒表面官能团的专性吸附及不均匀粒内扩散、静电作用等非专性吸附过程。   相似文献

关中盆地渭南地区十五万年来的黄土剖面记载了6个大的成壤期。本文对古土壤形成时的古环境进行了解译,并对它们在不同分类系统中的位置进行评价。全新世土壤S0是联合国土壤分类中的淋溶湿草原土。马兰黄土中包含两层古土壤,属典型黑钙土。S1古土壤由三层土壤复合组成,从上到下依次为典型黑钙土、淋溶湿草原土和深色淋溶土。成壤期与全球冰量较小的时期相对应,但古土壤的类型及发育程度与深海氧同位素所推测的全球冰量的变化有很大的不一致性,相反许多方面与北半球夏季太阳辐射的变化有较大的可比性。  相似文献

Quaternary glacial diamictons in section R47, overlying Ordovician shale in the Rouge River Basin of south-central Ontario, are considered to be representative of older and younger Wisconsinan glacial diamictons in the field area. Field characteristics, clast composition, mineralogy, particle size and geochemistry permit delineation of two units within the sequence and subdivision of deposits that correlate with Sunnybrook and Halton diamictons of Wisconsinan age. No Wisconsinan interstadial deposits are present in the section; however, outwash sandy gravel capping the Halton diamicton was probably emplaced by a high-energy stream draining into Lake Iroquois just prior to the incision of the Rouge Valley in the later Wisconsinan (ca. 11 000-12 000 yr BP). A buried palaeosol, which developed in this sandy gravel and in overlying aeolian sediment, shows partial leaching of carbonates and a slight increase of clay in the palaeosol solum. The main clay-mineral transformations in the buried palaeosol appear to involve the degradation of illite and illite-smectite accompanied by the production of vermiculite and minor amounts of chlorite. The ground soil capping the buried palaeosol is formed in colluvium emplaced 200 ± 80 yr BP following a local forest fire; the ground soil Ahk horizon gives an age of 4000 yr in the future, probably as a result of nuclear bomb testing effects on modern radiocarbon. The presence of an A/C profile in the ground soil system, although thin, indicates that surface soils may form rapidly. The geochemistry of the two Wisconsinan diamictons shows similar calcite and SiO2-corrected mean element concentrations, with slightly elevated levels of Ca, Sr, Hf and Lu in the younger deposit. Both diamictons are geochemically quite different from the shale bedrock in the area, indicating that the bulk of transported sediment came from outside the area.  相似文献

Relict sand wedges are ubiquitous in southern Patagonia. At six sites we conducted detailed investigations of stratigraphy, soils, and wedge frequency and characteristics. Some sections contain four or more buried horizons with casts. The cryogenic features are dominantly relict sand wedges with an average depth, maximum apparent width, minimum apparent width, and H/W of 78, 39, 3.8, and 2.9 cm, respectively. The host materials are fine-textured (silt loam, silty clay loam, clay loam) till and the infillings are aeolian sand. The soils are primarily Calciargidic Argixerolls that bear a legacy of climate change. Whereas the sand wedges formed during very cold (?4 to ?8 °C or colder) and dry (ca. ≤100 mm precipitation/yr) glacial periods, petrocalcic horizons from calcium carbonate contributed by dustfall formed during warmer (7 °C or warmer) and moister (≥250 mm/yr) interglacial periods. The paleo-argillic (Bt) horizons reflect unusually moist interglacial events where the mean annual precipitation may have been 400 mm/yr. Permafrost was nearly continuous in southern Patagonia during the Illinoian glacial stage (ca. 200 ka), the early to mid-Pleistocene (ca. 800–500 ka), and on two occasions during the early Pleistocene (ca. 1.0–1.1 Ma).  相似文献

圆锥动力触探试验(DCPT)是一种用来预测地基土相对密实度的方法。然而,现有的预测公式主要针对石英土。为解决这一问题,通过现场以及室内模型试验,得到了轻型动力触探贯入指标与钙质土相对密实度之间的关系。可知相比于石英土,粒径对钙质土贯入指标的影响较为显著。若采用现有公式计算钙质土的相对密实度,得到的数值偏大,结果偏于危险。为了便于工程应用,基于Butterfield改进的量纲分析理论,建立了一种可将不同形式DCPT的贯入指标进行相互转化的方法,实现了轻型与重型动力触探指标之间的相互转换,进而得到了重型动力触探贯入指标与钙质土相对密实度之间的关系。根据现场重型动力触探试验数据可知,上述关系的计算结果与现场实测结果吻合良好。  相似文献

The expansion of silver fir (Abies alba) during the 20th century in the European inner Alps calls into question the causes of the observed dynamics. We investigate the past distribution of Abies alba via analysis of wood charcoal buried in natural soils (identification, weighing, dating) and of pollen and macro-remains from peat to help us understand its present-day expansion. Material was sampled in the driest areas of the inner French Alps - some samples from calcareous sites, and most from southern exposures that should exclude Abies alba, which is a drought and carbonate intolerant species. The regional tree limit of the silver fir has not changed significantly since the middle Holocene. Abies alba grew on southern exposures, even on calcareous soils, but its importance was higher on northern slopes. From 4000 to 2000 cal. yr BP, depending on sites, the species has experienced local extinction associated with fire history. Human impact, more than climate, appears to be the main factor for local extinction, indicating that the marked present-day expansion of silver fir may result from land-use abandonment.  相似文献

Fossil soils occur in the Reading Beds of Alum Bay. All soils have hydromorphic characteristics, caused by either groundwater or stagnating pluvial water; some have illuviation of clay. The combination of bioturbation (striated burrows) and iron segregation may indicate that the Reading Beds in Alum Bay are of fluviomarine origin. The soils were formed in a warm climate with a marked dry season. They indicate a landscape with minor variations in surface level. The Reading Beds have clay mineral assemblages that are partly inherited and partly changed by soil formation. Some soil horizons might be used for stratigraphic correlation.  相似文献

本文对我国新生代地层中颇具争议的安宁系进行了综合对比分析,确认安宁系位于中新统咸水河底砾岩之上,早更新世初黄河阶地砾石层之下,为中新世中期至上新世沉积。沉积构造、粒度和石英砂表面特征等一致表明,安宁系是与干热气候相应的风砂活动的产物。安宁系及与之同时并存的中国东部风成红土说明,第三纪晚期中国大陆已存在沙漠-风成红土的分异格局。推测第三纪晚期,兰州附近地区处于副热带北侧,西风带南缘,半干旱草原至干旱荒漠草原环境。  相似文献

通过对中太平洋海盆表层沉积物与相伴生的锰结核的研究表面,丰度、品位等有明显的差异,在深海粘土中锰结核干度最度,钙质软泥多,锰结核的发现聚集与沉积物类型,沉积速率、孔隙度、金属含量及形成时的氧化还原条件,水深、底层流等的影响.锰结核的形成,发育与富集是受多种因素所控制,是一个模式内的约制。  相似文献
