The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS)-based Forest Large-Eddy Simulation (RAFLES), developed and evaluated here, is used to explore the effects of three-dimensional canopy heterogeneity, at the individual tree scale, on the statistical properties of turbulence most pertinent to mass and momentum transfer. In RAFLES, the canopy interacts with air by exerting a drag force, by restricting the open volume and apertures available for flow (i.e. finite porosity), and by acting as a heterogeneous source of heat and moisture. The first and second statistical moments of the velocity and flux profiles computed by RAFLES are compared with turbulent velocity and scalar flux measurements collected during spring and winter days. The observations were made at a meteorological tower situated within a southern hardwood canopy at the Duke Forest site, near Durham, North Carolina, U.S.A. Each of the days analyzed is characterized by distinct regimes of atmospheric stability and canopy foliage distribution conditions. RAFLES results agreed with the 30-min averaged flow statistics profiles measured at this single tower. Following this intercomparison, two case studies are numerically considered representing end-members of foliage and midday atmospheric stability conditions: one representing the winter season with strong winds above a sparse canopy and a slightly unstable boundary layer; the other representing the spring season with a dense canopy, calm conditions, and a strongly convective boundary layer. In each case, results from the control canopy, simulating the observed heterogeneous canopy structure at the Duke Forest hardwood stand, are compared with a test case that also includes heterogeneity commensurate in scale to tree-fall gaps. The effects of such tree-scale canopy heterogeneity on the flow are explored at three levels pertinent to biosphere-atmosphere exchange. The first level (zero-dimensional) considers the effects of such heterogeneity on the common representation of the canopy via length scales such as the zero-plane displacement, the aerodynamic roughness length, the surface-layer depth, and the eddy-penetration depth. The second level (one-dimensional) considers the normalized horizontally-averaged profiles of the first and second moments of the flow to assess how tree-scale heterogeneities disturb the entire planar-averaged profiles from their canonical (and well-studied planar-homogeneous) values inside the canopy and in the surface layer. The third level (three-dimensional) considers the effects of such tree-scale heterogeneities on the spatial variability of the ejection-sweep cycle and its propagation to momentum and mass fluxes. From these comparisons, it is shown that such microscale heterogeneity leads to increased spatial correlations between attributes of the ejection-sweep cycle and measures of canopy heterogeneity, resulting in correlated spatial heterogeneity in fluxes. This heterogeneity persisted up to four times the mean height of the canopy (h c ) for some variables. Interestingly, this estimate is in agreement with the working definition of the thickness of the canopy roughness sublayer (2h c –5h c ).  相似文献

Urban canopy parameterizations (UCPs) are necessary in mesoscale modelling to take into account the effects of buildings on wind and turbulent structures. This study is focused on the dynamical part of UCPs. The main objective is twofold: first, computing important UCP input parameters (turbulent length scales and the sectional drag coefficient) by means of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations of turbulent flow; and second, comparing UCP variables with spatially-averaged properties obtained from RANS simulations for the same configurations. The results show the importance of using a suitable parameterization of the drag force for different packing densities. An urban canopy parameterization that is a compromise between simplicity and accuracy is proposed. This scheme accounts for the variation of drag coefficients with packing densities, and has a parameterization of turbulent length scales. The technique adopted ensures that, at least for the simple configurations studied, the urban canopy parameterization gives values of spatially-averaged variables similar to those computed from a more complex simulation, such as RANS that resolves explicitly the flow around buildings.  相似文献

How the spatial perturbations of the first and second moments of the velocity and pressure fields differ for flow over a train of gentle hills covered by either sparse or dense vegetation is explored using large-eddy simulation (LES). Two simulations are investigated where the canopy is composed of uniformly arrayed rods each with a height that is comparable to the hill height. In the first simulation, the rod density is chosen so that much of the momentum is absorbed within the canopy volume yet the canopy is not dense enough to induce separation on the lee side of the hill. In the second simulation, the rod density is large enough to induce recirculation inside the canopy on the lee side of the hill. For this separating flow case, zones of intense shear stress originating near the canopy-atmosphere interface persist all the way up to the middle layer, ‘contaminating’ much of the middle and outer layers with shear stress gradients. The implications of these persistent shear-stress gradients on rapid distortion theory and phase relationships between higher order velocity statistics and hill-induced mean velocity perturbations (Δu) are discussed. Within the inner layer, these intense shear zones improve predictions of the spatial perturbation by K-theory, especially for the phase relationships between the shear stress (~ ?Δu/?z) and the velocity variances, where z is the height. For the upper canopy layers, wake production increases with increasing leaf area density resulting in a vertical velocity variance more in phase with Δu than with ?Δu/?z. However, background turbulence and inactive eddies may have dampened this effect for the longitudinal velocity variance. The increase in leaf area density does not significantly affect the phase relationship between mean surface pressure and topography for the two simulations, though the LES results here confirm earlier findings that the minimum mean pressure shifts downstream from the hill crest. The increase in leaf area density and associated flow separation simply stretches this difference further downstream. This shift increases the pressure drag, the dominant term in the overall drag on the hill surface, by some 15%. With regards to the normalized pressure variance, increasing leaf area density increases ${\sigma_p/u_{*}^{2}}$ near the canopy top, where u * is the longitudinally averaged friction velocity at the canopy top and σ p is the standard deviation of the pressure fluctuations. This increase is shown to be consistent with a primitive scaling argument on the leading term describing the mean-flow turbulent interaction. This scaling argument also predicts the spatial variations in σ p above the canopy reasonably well for both simulations, but not inside the canopy.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations have been performed for fully developed turbulent flow within and above explicitly resolved simple cube arrays. The results from our model, hereafter LES-CITY, are shown to agree with laboratory experiments. We investigated the systematic influence of cube density on turbulent flow characteristics by performing numerical experiments for cube areal densities from 0 to 44%. The following results were obtained: (1) The dispersive momentum flux was quite large within the canopy layer due to a mean stream re-circulation, whereas it was smaller above the canopy. The spatial variation of temporally averaged momentum in the roughness sub-layer was 20% or less of the total kinematic surface drag. (2) The temporally and spatially-averaged flow structure confirmed the existence of conventionally described canyon flow regimes; isolated, interfacial, and wake. However, the intermittency of the canyon flow for all cube densities was quite large and the stream patterns were never persistent. (3) Turbulent organized structures (TOS) similar to those observed in turbulent surface-layer flows were simulated, which are characterized by longitudinally-elongated low speed streaks and the corresponding shorter streamwise vortices. The streaks in sparse and dense canopy flows were likely to be aligned to the street line and to the roof lines, respectively. Such heterogeneity of TOS partially accounts for the large spatial variation of momentum flux. (4) In contrast to the mixing layer analogy of vegetation flows, the TOS and the resulting turbulent statistics of urban flow above the canopy resembled those in surface layers. The recirculation within the canopy significantly influenced the turbulent statistical properties.  相似文献

The structure of turbulent flows along a transition between tall-forested canopies and forest clearings continues to be an active research topic in canopy turbulence. The difficulties in describing the turbulent flow along these transitions stem from the fact that the vertical structure of the canopy and its leaf area distribution cannot be ignored or represented by an effective roughness length. Large-eddy simulation (LES) runs were performed to explore the effect of a homogeneous variation in the forest leaf area index (LAI) on the turbulent flow across forest edges. A nested grid numerical method was used to ensure the development of a deep boundary layer above the forest while maintaining a sufficiently high resolution in the region close to the ground. It was demonstrated that the LES here predicted first-order and second-order mean velocity statistics within the canopy that agree with reported Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) model results, field and laboratory experiments. In the simulations reported here, the LAI was varied between 2 and 8 spanning a broad range of observed LAI in terrestrial ecosystems. By increasing the forest LAI, the mean flow properties both within the forest and in the clearing near the forest edge were altered in two fundamental ways: near the forest edge and into the clearing, the flow statistical properties resembled the so-called back-facing step (BFS) flow with a mean recirculation zone near the edge. Another recirculation zone sets up downstream of the clearing as the flow enters the tall forest canopy. The genesis of this within-forest recirculation zone can be primarily described using the interplay between the mean pressure gradients (forcing the flow) and the drag force (opposing the flow). Using the LES results, a simplified analytical model was also proposed to explain the location of the recirculation zone inside the canopy and its dependence on the forest LAI. Furthermore, a simplified scaling argument that decomposes the mean velocity at the outflow edge into a superposition of ‘exit flow’ and BFS-like flow with their relative importance determined by LAI was explored.  相似文献

Atmospheric flow over complex terrain, particularly recirculation flows, greatly influences wind-turbine siting, forest-fire behaviour, and trace-gas and pollutant dispersion. However, there is a large uncertainty in the simulation of flow over complex topography, which is attributable to the type of turbulence model, the subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulence parametrization, terrain-following coordinates, and numerical errors in finite-difference methods. Here, we upgrade the large-eddy simulation module within the Weather Research and Forecasting model by incorporating the immersed-boundary method into the module to improve simulations of the flow and recirculation over complex terrain. Simulations over the Bolund Hill indicate improved mean absolute speed-up errors with respect to previous studies, as well an improved simulation of the recirculation zone behind the escarpment of the hill. With regard to the SGS parametrization, the Lagrangian-averaged scale-dependent Smagorinsky model performs better than the classic Smagorinsky model in reproducing both velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. A finer grid resolution also improves the strength of the recirculation in flow simulations, with a higher horizontal grid resolution improving simulations just behind the escarpment, and a higher vertical grid resolution improving results on the lee side of the hill. Our modelling approach has broad applications for the simulation of atmospheric flows over complex topography.  相似文献

Abstract

The existence and dynamics of the so‐called “Rose Spit Eddy” in Dixon Entrance, British Columbia, are investigated by (i) analysing published observations of low‐frequency Eulerian and Lagrangian currents in the region; (ii) interpreting tidal residuals produced by the Hecate Model (a non‐rotating hydraulic model of Hecate Strait and Dixon Entrance); and (iii) running a barotropic, non‐linear numerical tidal model over simplified topography to investigate residuals produced over the Rose Spit sill.

Observations have consistently revealed persistent basin‐wide, surface‐intensified cyclonic shears within central and eastern Dixon Entrance. The Hecate hydraulic tidal model also produced a tidal residual cyclonic gyre in central Dixon Entrance, but with velocities considerably larger than those observed. Barotropic numerical simulations of tidal streams flowing over a representation of the Rose Spit sill produced residual flows along the sill in reasonable agreement with observations and theory. A southward‐directed jet flow was produced off Cape Chacon. Elsewhere, tidal rectification was weak. Run without the Coriolis force, organized flow along the sill broke down, although the headland jet off Cape Chacon persisted.

We submit that the observed Rose Spit eddy results from interactions between buoyancy‐driven coastal currents and tidally rectified flows generated over the Rose Spit sill, and near Cape Chacon, and perhaps indirectly, over the western flank of Learmonth Bank (which although west of the Rose Spit eddy, contributes to the cross‐channel flow across the Entrance). These regions of localized tidal stress will each favour recirculation of a portion of the coastal current within the Entrance, helping to form the eddy.

We believe that the Hecate hydraulic model eddy was generated to a significant degree by phase errors introduced at the northern open boundary, where a rocking barrier was used to force currents. A second rocking barrier also produced a large cyclonic gyre, not supported by observations, near the model's southern boundary.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent flow over regular arrays of urban-like, cubical obstacles are reported. Results are analysed in terms of a formal spatial averaging procedure to enable interpretation of the flow within the arrays as a canopy flow, and of the flow above as a rough wall boundary layer. Spatial averages of the mean velocity, turbulent stresses and pressure drag are computed. The statistics compare very well with data from wind-tunnel experiments. Within the arrays the time-averaged flow structure gives rise to significant ‘dispersive stress’ whereas above the Reynolds stress dominates. The mean flow structure and turbulence statistics depend significantly on the layout of the cubes. Unsteady effects are important, especially in the lower canopy layer where turbulent fluctuations dominate over the mean flow.  相似文献

The mean wind direction within an urban canopy changes with height when the incoming flow is not orthogonal to obstacle faces. This wind-turning effect is induced by complex processes and its modelling in urban-canopy (UC) parametrizations is difficult. Here we focus on the analysis of the spatially-averaged flow properties over an aligned array of cubes and their variation with incoming wind direction. For this purpose, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations previously compared, for a reduced number of incident wind directions, against direct numerical simulation results are used. The drag formulation of a UC parametrization is modified and different drag coefficients are tested in order to reproduce the wind-turning effect within the canopy for oblique wind directions. The simulations carried out for a UC parametrization in one-dimensional mode indicate that a height-dependent drag coefficient is needed to capture this effect.  相似文献

Natural shelterbelts, unlike planar barriers, have a certain width, within which interactions among wind speed, drag force and pressure perturbations create a net sheltering effect. The variations of flow, drag force, permeability, and pressure perturbation for shelterbelts of different widths and different horizontal structures are numerically studied, and their influences on shelter efficiency are discussed. Comparisons are made of fourteen medium-dense shelterbelts, with the same overall leaf-area, that differ only in width or horizontal distribution of leaf-area density. The simulated results are consistent with both field observations and wind-tunnel measurements.The simulations demonstrate that the total drag force of the entire shelterbelt varies little with changes in width and structure. The results also show that shelter distance and the overall average wind speed reduction decrease only by 15–18% as width increases by a factor of 100, and changes even less for different internal structure. However, width greatly affects the location of minimum wind speed, pressure perturbation, and the permeability of shelterbelts. Horizontal changes of wind speed inside the uniform shelterbelts have four different patterns, which depend on shelterbelt width and height. The absolute pressure perturbation significantly decreases with increasing width. A possible cause of the insensitivity of shelter efficiency to width and internal inhomogeneous structure is the compensation between the effects of permeability and pressure perturbation on shelter efficiency.  相似文献

为了更好地了解青藏高原多尺度地形的动力作用,并为改良数值模式中地形的表示方法奠定基础,通过采用2010年青藏高原西南部6个地面台站的观测资料以及4种不同分辨率的分析(再分析)资料,分别估算了冈底斯山及整个青藏高原主体范围内的地表气压拖曳,得出了青藏高原可能存在的拖曳类型,并且分析了青藏高原气压拖曳的一些特征。得出如下主要结论:由罗斯贝波产生的波动拖曳作为行星尺度的拖曳对青藏高原地区总拖曳的贡献最大;同时,青藏高原范围内存在着大量与天气过程密切相关的天气尺度的拖曳;对于冈底斯山对气流的中尺度动力作用的进一步分析可知,夏季基本全为气流分离,冬季500 hPa以下为气流分离,500—200 hPa为气流分离和波动破碎的混合区,而200 hPa以上的平流层则为重力波的产生及其破碎区域;冈底斯山地区的地表气压拖曳主要集中在3000—5000 m高度,并且,冈底斯山总拖曳的方向近乎与山脊垂直;地表气压和地形高度资料的分辨率越高,所能分辨出的更小波长的气压拖曳也越多,估算出的高原主体范围内的拖曳值也越大;变压梯度和地形梯度是影响气压拖曳的基本因子,但地形梯度对拖曳的影响最终是通过气压梯度来实现的。  相似文献

Numerical simulations of flow over hills that are partially covered with a forest canopy are performed. This represents a much more realistic situation than previous studies that have generally concentrated on hills that are fully-forested. The results show that the flow over the hill is sensitive to where on the hill the forest is positioned. In particular, for low slopes flow separation is predominantly located within the forest on the lee slope. This has implications for the transport of scalars in the forest canopy. For large hills the results show more variability in scalar concentrations within the canopy compared to either a fully-forested hill or a patch of forest over flat terrain. These results are likely to have implications for a range of applications including the siting and interpretation of flux measurements over forests in complex terrain, predicting wind damage to trees and wind-farm developments. Calculation of the hill-induced pressure drag and canopy-plus-surface stress shows a strong sensitivity to the position of the forest relative to the hill. Depending on the position of the forest the individual drag terms may be strongly enhanced or reduced and may even change sign. The net impact is generally to reduce the total drag compared to an equivalent fully-forested hill, but the amount of the reduction depends strongly on the position of the forest canopy on the hill. In many cases with large, wide hills there is a clear separation of scales between the adjustment of the canopy to a forest edge (of order 6 ? 8L c, where L c is the canopy adjustment length scale) and the width of the hill. This separation means that the hill-induced pressure and flow fields and the forest-edge induced pressure and flow fields can in some sense be considered as acting separately. This provides a means of explaining the combined effects of partial forestation and terrain. It also offers a simple method for modelling the changes in drag over a hill due to partial forest cover by considering the impact of the hill and the partial canopy separately. Scaling arguments based on this idea successfully collapse the modelled drag over a range of different hill widths and heights and for different canopy parameters. This offers scope for a relatively simple parametrization of the effects of partial forest cover on the drag over a hill.  相似文献

Predictions of the surface drag in turbulent boundary-layer flow over two-dimensional sinusoidal topography from various numerical models are compared. For simple 2D terrain, the model results show that the drag increases associated with topography are essentially proportional to (slope)2 up to the steepness at which the flow separates. For the purposes of boundary-layer parameterisation within larger-scale models, we propose a representation of the effects of simple 2D topography via an effective roughness length, z 0 eff. The form of the varation of z 0 eff with terrain slope and topographic wavelength is established for small slopes from the model results and a semi-empirical formula is proposed.  相似文献

Mean Flow Near Edges and Within Cavities Situated Inside Dense Canopies   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
A streamfunction-vorticity formulation is used to explore the extent to which turbulent and turbulently inviscid solutions to the mean momentum balance explain the mean flow across forest edges and within cavities situated inside dense forested canopies. The turbulent solution is based on the mean momentum balance where first-order closure principles are used to model turbulent stresses. The turbulently inviscid solution retains all the key terms in the mean momentum balance but for the turbulent stress gradients. Both exit and entry versions of the forest edge problem are explored. The turbulent solution is found to describe sufficiently the bulk spatial patterns of the mean flow near the edge including signatures of different length scales reported in canopy transition studies. Next, the ‘clearing inside canopy’ or the so-called ‘cavity’ problem is solved for the inviscid and turbulent solutions and then compared against flume experiments. The inviscid solution describes the bulk flow dynamics in much of the zones within the cavity. In particular, the solution can capture the correct position of the bulk recirculation zone within the cavity, although with a weaker magnitude. The inviscid solution cannot capture the large vertical heterogeneity in the mean velocity above the canopy, as expected. These features are better captured via the first-order closure representation of the turbulent solution. Given the ability of this vorticity formulation to capture the mean pressure variations and the mean advective acceleration terms, it is ideal for exploring the distributions of scalars and roughness-induced flow adjustments on complex topography.  相似文献

Turbulent flow over a vegetation canopy under neutral atmospheric conditions is investigated using large-eddy simulation. Each model tree, which consists of a sphere-shaped tree crown and a cylindrical trunk, is fully resolved. The resulting turbulence statistics and the drag force on the vegetation agree well with measurements from the corresponding wind-tunnel experiment described by Böhm et al. (Boundary-Layer Meteorol, 146:393–419, 2013). Statistically, this kind of model canopy exhibits both vegetation and bluff-body-flow characteristics. The time-averaged flow skims over the top of the underlying canopy, forming a low-momentum recirculation zone on the lee-side of the bluff elements, which causes significant dispersive stress within the canopy layer. Two other numerical representations of vegetation canopies, referred to as the drag-element and drag-crown approaches, have also been developed to assess the performance of simulations. Turbulence statistics suggest that the canopy shear layer interferes with wakes behind stems and crowns. The drag-crown approach yields better agreement between numerical results and experimental measurements than does the traditional drag-element approach, thus providing a promising numerical model for simulating canopy turbulence.  相似文献

We compare two molecular Monte Carlo simulation methods, the discrete summation method and the growth/decay method, which calculate the vapor-liquid nucleation free energy barrier by simulating isolated clusters of fixed size without the surrounding vapor. The methods are applied to calculations of nucleation barriers of Lennard–Jones argon at 60 K and 80 K. Both of these methods are computationally efficient, as only isolated clusters without the surrounding vapor are simulated, and the methods can be applied with any given cluster definition. They give equivalent results to other methods where the vapor phase is also included. The discrete summation method is based on the calculation of the difference in free energies between two systems containing an n-cluster and an (n − 1)-cluster plus one non-interacting (free) molecule. We show that the configurational space is not equivalent in the two systems. Hence, there has to be an additional term in the free energy calculation that accounts for several kT in magnitude. In contrast to previous studies we also show that it is not correct to prevent the overlap of the non-interacting molecule and another molecule by a zero or an arbitrarily small repulsive potential, but with a small excluded space around the free molecule.  相似文献

针对目前对青藏高原大地形激发的重力波拖曳相关问题还不十分清楚,在GRAPES_Meso模式中引入次网格地形重力波拖曳参数化方案,通过数值试验初步研究了青藏高原地区次网格地形重力波拖曳的一些相关参数,结果指出:(1)沿30°N地形重力波拖曳的垂直分布显示,阻塞拖曳主要存在于模式的低层(第1—5层),重力波拖曳主要存在于模式的第5—10层;从水平分布看,模式第3层以阻塞拖曳为主,主要位于青藏高原边缘地区,阻塞拖曳大值区沿喜马拉雅山脉走向和青藏高原东坡;模式第5层以重力波拖曳为主,主要位于青藏高原东部地区和云贵高原的北部边缘。(2)弗劳德数和气流绕流高度分析表明,在青藏高原喜马拉雅山脉一带和高原东部边缘地区,气流爬坡能力强,同时在这一地区绕流高度最高;弗劳德数越大的地区绕流高度距离地表越高。(3)采用次网格地形重力波拖曳参数化方案后,对于低层和高层地形重力波破碎的发生有更准确的描述,地形重力波是向上垂直传播的。(4)个例和批量试验检验结果表明,采用次网格地形重力波拖曳参数化方案对于风场和降水模拟有正效果,提高了模式预报的准确率。  相似文献

The flow fields of hexagonal ice plates and broad-branch ice crystals fallingin the air with Reynolds numbers from 20 to 140 were investigated by numerical simulations. The three-dimensional incompressible, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations for flow past fixed targets were solved by a second-order QUICK numerical scheme. Several velocity fields are displayed. It is shown that unsteady flow can be modeled by adding an artificial disturbance at a certain point. Computations showed that thin oblate spheroids are good approximations to hexagonal plates of the same size in the drag calculation whereas the broad-branch crystals are significantly different. Empirical formulas for drag coefficients were developed for cloud physical calculations.  相似文献
