Sm-Nd geochronology may be used to bracket the age of metamorphism in rocks which are difficult to date by other methods. By coupling whole rock Sm-Nd analyses of the principal members of the South Harris Igneous Complex, with Sm-Nd mineral isochrons on two anothositic gabbros, the age of granulite facios metamorphism has been defined. Whole rock analyses of three pairs of closely spaced samples of the anorthosite give consistent ages averaging 2.18±0.06 Gyr, but in general the data from the anorthosite do not define an isochron as a result of variable contamination of the evolving magma chamber. Whole rock data on the tonalite indicate that it is younger than 2.06 Gyr; its mean TCHUR age is 1.86±0.05 Gyr. Garnet-pyroxene-amphibole-plagioclase mineral isochrons on two anorthosite samples give identical 1.87±0.04 Gyr ages which date cooling after the high pressure granulite facies metamorphism. Together with the tonalite whole rock data this defines the age of that metamorphism and confirms Dearnley's original assignment of an early Laxfordian age.  相似文献

A thermochemical data base for phases in the system Fe-Mg-Si-O at high pressures up to 300 kbar is established by supplementing the available calorimetric data with data calculated from experimental high pressure synthesis studies. Phases included in the data base are the SiO2 polymorphs, rock salt solid solutions (Fe-Mg-O), Fe2O3, Fe3O4, (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 olivine, spinel, modified spinel and (Mg, Fe)SiO3 perovskite and pyroxene. Phases not included are the MgSiO3-ilmenite and -garnet. Fe-Mg solution properties of olivine, spinel, perovskite and wustite (rock salt) are estimated. The wüstite solid solution has been modeled as a nonideal solution of three end members; FeO, FeO1.5 and MgO. The new data base is made consistent with most of the available information on high pressure phase studies. The data base is useful in generating phase diagrams of various different compositions for the purpose of planning new experiments and analysing existing phase synthesis data.  相似文献

A number of experimental CO2 solubility data for silicate and aluminosilicate melts at a variety of P- T conditions are consistent with solution of CO2 in the melt by polymer condensation reactions such as SiO 4(m 4? +CO2(v)+Si n O 3n+1(m) (2n+1) ?Si n+1O 3n+4(m) (2n+4)? +CO 3(m )2? . For various metalsilicate systems the relative solubility of CO2 should depend markedly on the relative Gibbs free change of reaction. Experimental solubility data for the systems Li2O-SiO2, Na2O-SiO2, K2O-SiO2, CaO-SiO2, MgO-SiO2 and other aluminosilicate melts are in complete accord with predictions based on Gibbs Free energies of model polycondesation reactions. A rigorous thermodynamic treatment of published P- T-wt.% CO2 solubility data for a number of mineral and natural melts suggests that for the reaction CO2(m) ? CO2(v)
  1. CO2-melt mixing may be considered ideal (i.e., { \(a_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }^m = X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }^m \) );
  2. \(\bar V_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }^m \) , the partial molal volume of CO2 in the melt, is approximately equal to 30 cm3 mole?1 and independent of P and T;
  3. Δ C p 0 is approximately equal to zero in the T range 1,400° to 1,650 °C and
  4. enthalpies and entropies of the dissolution reaction depend on the ratio of network modifiers to network builders in the melt. Analytic expressions which relate the CO2 content of a melt to P, T, and \(f_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} } \) for andesite, tholeiite and olivine melilite melts of the form
$$\ln X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }^m = \ln f_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} } - \frac{A}{T} - B - \frac{C}{T}(P - 1)$$ have been determined. Regression parameters are (A, B, C): andesite (3.419, 11.164, 0.408), tholeiite (14.040, 5.440,0.393), melilite (9.226, 7.860, 0.352). The solubility equations are believed to be accurate in the range 3<P<30 kbar and 1,100°<T<1,650 °C. A series of CO2 isopleth diagrams for a wide range of T and P are drawn for andesitic, tholeiitic and alkalic melts.  相似文献

Boninite primary magmas: Evidence from the Cape Vogel Peninsula,PNG   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Boninites from Cape Vogel, PNG, are dominantly pyroxene-glass rocks, but many contain olivine, sometimes as refractory as Fo94. We derive a parental magma for this suite (in equilibrium with Fo94) which contains 20 wt.% MgO and is quartz-normative. This liquid is hydrous, and from petrographie evidence and whole rock H2O+ values, we estimate it to contain 2–3 wt.% H2O. These data suggest olivine fractionation and primary magmatic water are important in boninite genesis, but both are often obscured by later alteration. The derived parental magma has probably formed at 1,250–1,300° C and low pressures (< ?10kB) and is similar to those which gave rise to olivine-clinoenstatite phyric boninites from New Caledonia and from Howqua, Australia, and possibly to a proposed parental magma for the Bushveld Complex.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental and statistical study on the kerf width, used instead of the width of the cut in abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting. Pre-dimensioned granitic rocks were sampled for the experimentations designed by using Taguchi orthogonal arrays. The effects of the AWJ operating variables on the kerf width were studied and the rock properties were correlated with the kerf widths. Additionally, predictive models for the kerf widths were developed using multi-variable regression analysis and the developed models were verified through some statistical tests. The results demonstrated that the standoff distance and the traverse speed have significant effects on the kerf widths. The results also showed that water absorption, unit weight, microhardness, the maximum grain size of rock-forming minerals, and mean grain size of the rock have significant correlations with the kerf widths of the tested rocks. Furthermore, the modeling results revealed that the predictive models derived from rock properties, can be successfully used as a practical guideline.  相似文献

Net annual productivity of tall and medium form cordgrass,Spartina alterniflora, was estimated by a new clip sampling method in a sloping foreshore salt marsh at Wallops Island, Virginia. This method measured live standing crops only, to avoid problems of measuring dead biomass inherent in other methods. Losses from live standing crops by shoot mortality and by leaf shedding were estimated from these measurements and added separately to production of live tillers and of live culms. This allowed quantification of various components of production.Spartina tillering in different zones of the marsh produced 62 to 211 g dry weight per m2 per yr. Tiller mortality removed 37 to 106 g per m2 per yr from live standing crops. Culms produced 348 to 1,132 g per m2 before flowering and die-back. Culm mortality removed 28 to 246 g per m2 before flowering. Leaf shedding removed an additional 83 g per m2 in tall formSpartina. Altogether, net annual productivity These estimates are much higher than previous estimates of productivity and standing crops inSpartina marshes nearby.  相似文献

On the basis of its geological characteristics, the Gushan iron deposit should be assigned to volcano-hydrothermal type with hematite-quartz as its principal mineral assemblage. Iron concentration of the ore solution has been estimated from the ratio of hematite to quartz in the ore. By using experimental and thermodynamic data, the solubility of ferro-minerals at elevated temperatures and pressures have been calculated in the system FeO?Fe2O3?NaCl?HCl?H2O. The effects ofT, P, pH,f O 2 and total Cl concentration on the solubility of ferrominerals are discussed. Thermodynamic calculations based on presumed physico-chemical conditions for the ore solution are in good agreement with geological observations. The calculation shows that ferro-minerals were deposited at logf O 2=?21~?25, log(mHCl+mH+)=?2.5~?3,P=1?0.75 (or 0.5) kb, andT=400°?350°C. It is believed that the original solution was an acid NaCl-bearing solution of magmatic derivation. However, iron in the solution was enriched with falling temperatures by dissolving pre-existing ferro-minerals in consolidated rocks rather than extracting directly from the magma. Either temperature (below 400°C) or pressure decrease may result in the precipitation of ferro-minerals from the solution, but the Fe/Si ratio in the ore is dependent mainly upon pH. The widespread siliceous veins of later stages are a reflection of decreasing acidity of the solution. An increase inf O 2 will also favor the deposition of ferro-minerals. The hypabyssal occurrence and the existence of the Huangmaqing sandy shale have contributed greatly to the formation of hematite.  相似文献

Electrical conductivities of Ni2SiO4, Fe2SiO4, and MgSiO3 were measured on synthetic powders in the temperature range 340° to 1,100° C and at pressures up to 20 kbars. For ternary compounds such as olivines and pyroxenes the control of two further variables, like the chemical activities of two components are needed, besides temperature and pressure. The activities of the corresponding binary oxides were controlled by equilibrating the samples with their neighbour-phases. Control of the oxygen partial pressure was achieved by buffer techniques. From the slopes of the lg σ vs. 1/T lines the activation energies were calculated for 10 kbar: 0.56 eV and 2.7 eV for Ni2SiO4 in equilibrium with SiO2 and Ni/NiO-buffer for the temperature range 500°–800°C and 800°–1,000°C resp. 0.52 eV for Fe2SiO4 in equilibrium with SiO2 and metallic iron, and 0.38 eV in equilibrium with SiO2 and magnetite; 1.11 eV for MgSiO3 in equilibrium with SiO2, and 1.25 eV in equilibrium with Mg2SiO4.  相似文献

The Burro Mountain ultramafic complex, Monterey County, California, consists of dunites and peridotites which are partially or wholly serpentinized. Primary minerals in both rock types are olivine, enstatite, diopside, and picotite which upon alteration yield chrysotile, lizardite, brucite, magnetite, talc, tremolite, and carbonate. Electron microprobe analyses show that enstatite, En85.8 to En90.8, alters to “bastite” composed only of lizardite (5.0–12.0 weight percent FeO), whereas olivine, Fo90.8 to Fo91.6, forms lizardite+chrysotile+brucite with or without magnetite. The chrysotile ranges from 3.0 to 5.0 weight percent FeO, the brucite from 16.0 to 43.0 weight percent FeO. As Serpentinization proceeds, the alteration products are enriched in FeO relative to MgO. Serpentinization probably originates in a changing \(P_{O_2 }\)-T environment by two different reactions:

The nine adiabatic elastic stiffness constants of synthetic single-crystal fayalite, Fe2SiO4, were measured as functions of pressure (range, 0 to 1.0 GPa) and temperature (range, 0 to 40° C) using the pulse superposition ultrasonic method. Summary calculated results for a dense fayalite polycrystalline aggregate, based on the HS average of our single-crystal data, are as follows: Vp = 6.67 km/s; Vs = 3.39km/s; K= 127.9 GPa; μ = 50.3 GPa; (?K/?P)T = 5.2; (?μ/?P)T=1.5;(?K/?T)P= ?0.030 GPa/K;and,(?/?T)P =-0.013 GPa/K (the pressure and temperature data are referred to 25° C and 1 atm, respectively). Accuracy of the single-crystal results was maintained by numerous cross and redundancy checks. Compared to the single-crystal elastic properties of forsterite, Mg2SiO4, the fayalite stiffness constants, as well as their pressure derivatives, are lower for each of the on-diagonal (C ij for which i=j) values, and generally higher for the off-diagonal (C ij for which i≠j) data. As a result, the bulk moduli (K) and dK/dP for forsterite and fayalite are very similar, but the rigidity modulus (μ) and dμ/dP for polycrystalline fayalite are much lower than their forsterite counterparts. The bulk compression properties derived from this study are very consistent with the static-compression x-ray results of Yagi et al. (1975). The temperature dependence of the bulk modulus of fayalite is somewhat greater (in a negative sense) than that of forsterite. The rigidity dependencies are almost equivalent. Over the temperature range relevant to this study, the elastic property results are generally consistent with the data of Sumino (1978), which were obtained using the RPR technique. However, some of the compressional modes are clearly discrepant. The elastic constants of fayalite appear to be less consistent with a theoretical HCP model (Leibfried 1955) than forsterite, reflecting the more covalent character of the Fe-O bonding in the former.  相似文献

Infrared absorption spectra of the high-pressure polymorphs β-Mg2SiO4 and β-Co2SiO4 have been measured between 0 and 27 GPa at room temperature. Grüneisen parameters determined for 11 modes of β-Mg2SiO4 (frequencies of 300 to 1,050 cm?1) and 5 modes of β-Co2SiO4 (490 to 1,050 cm?1) range between 0.8 and 1.9. Averaging the mid-infrared spectroscopic data for β-Mg2SiO4 yields an average Grüneisen parameter of 1.3 (±0.1), in good agreement with the high-temperature thermodynamic value of 1.35. Similarly, we find a value of 1.05 (±0.2) for the average spectroscopic Grüneisen parameter of β-Co2SiO4.  相似文献

Phenocryst and groundmass pyroxenes in 24 rocks of the tholeiitic, alkalic, and nephelinic suites from Haleakala and West Maui volcanoes, Maui, Hawaii, were analyzed quantitatively by electron microprobe. Results and conclusions: i) Tholeiites contain augite, pigeonite, and bronzite; alkalic rocks contain salite, augite, and ferroaugite; and nephelinic rocks have salite, sometimes of Wo>50 mole %. ii) The three suites can be distinguished by Ca contents of pyroxenes: High-Ca pyroxenes of tholeiitic rocks have Wo30–40; those of alkalic rocks have Wo38–48; and those of the nephelinic rocks have Wo47–51; i.e. Wo in clinopyroxene increases from tholeiitic, to alkalic, to nephelinic suites, iii). In the alkalic suite, rock types can be distinguished on the basis of clinopyroxene composition: Alkalic olivine and alkalic basalts have Wo38–45, hawaiites and mugearites have Wo45–48. Trachytes can be distinguished from both groups by higher Fe (Fs22–30) and Ca contents (Wo43–47). iv) Pyroxenes in tholeiitic rocks show higher intrarock variability (e.g. Fs12Wo40-Fs37Wo30) than those of the alkalic and nephelinic suites, v) Na2O bulk-rock content affects Na2O content of the precipitating high-Ca pyroxene; e.g. Na2O in groundmass pyroxene increases from tholeiitic, to alkalic (mafic members only), to nephelinic suites; a similar relationship is present within the differentiated alkalic suite, vi) In tholeiites, changes in groundmass high-Ca pyroxene compositions are related to changes in bulk rock compositions, e.g. FeO/FeO+MgO+CaO in clinopyroxene increases as this ratio increases in the bulk rock; this is not true for alkalic and nephelinic rocks, vii) In groundmass high-Ca pyroxene, Al2O3, Na20, and TiO2 contents increase and MnO content decreases with increasing Wo content from tholeiitic, to alkalic (mafic members only), to nephelinic suites, viii) Groundmass high-Ca pyroxenes are richer in MnO and Na2O and poorer in Cr2O3 compared to coexisting phenocrysts. High-Ca pyroxene phenocrysts in nephelinic rocks and in one mugearite are depleted in SiO2 and enriched in Al2O3 relative to coexisting groundmass clinopyroxene, indicating increased SiO2 activity during crystallization. Some tholeiites show the reverse; this Si—Al relationship is not clear in other samples.  相似文献

The volcanism in Iceland occurs on both rift zones and non-rifting zones. The rift zone volcanism produces rock suites of the tholeiitic series, ranging from primitive tholeiites (MORB) to highly silicic rocks. The non-rifting volcanic zones produce rock suites of transitional to mildly alkaline or even calc-alkaline composition, the basalts typically being FETI-basalts. Over 50 per cent of the rift zone production in Iceland is of the primitive MORB-type. The relative amount of the evolved rock types, as well as the total volcanic production increases inland along the rift zones. The rock types of the Icelandic rift zones are identical to those of the submerged oceanic rift zones, but the Icelandic production is somewhat offset towards a more voluminous evolved end. The skewness in volume relations of rock types, as compared to the oceanic rifts in general, is mainly caused by the products of the non-rifting volcanic zones of Iceland and only to a small degree by the rift zone products.  相似文献

X-ray structure refinements of Ni2SiO4 and Fe2SiO4 spinels have been made as a function of temperature and heating duration by intensity measurements at high temperatures and room pressure. The lattice parameters of Ni2SiO4 spinel linearly increased with temperature up to 1,000° C. However, Fe2SiO4 spinel exhibited a nonlinear thermal expansion and was converted to a polycrystalline mixture of spinel and olivine by heating of less than one-hour at 800° C. The ratios between the octahedral and tetrahedral bond lengths D oct/D tetr and between the shared and unshared edge distances (O-O)sh/(O-O)unsh in Fe2SiO4 spinel were both much larger than those in Ni2SiO4. These ratios increase with temperature. The Fe2SiO4 spinel more readily approached a activation state which facilitated the transition to the olivine structure than the Ni2SiO4 spinel. The lattice parameter of Ni2SiO4 spinel decreased with heating period at constant temperatures of 700° C and 800° C. The parameter of the quenched sample after heating for 52 h at 700° C was smaller than that of the nonheated sample. The refinements of the site occupancies at each heating duration indicated an increase in the cation deficiency in both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Electron microprobe analysis, however, proved no significant difference in the chemical compositions between the quenched and nonheated samples. Si and Ni atoms displaced from normally occupied spinel lattice sites are assumed to settle in vacant sites defined by the cubic close packed oxygen sublattice in a manner which preserves the electric neutrality of the bulk crystal.  相似文献

In this paper, an experimental study on the cut depth, which is an important cutting performance indicator in the abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting of rock, was presented. Taguchi experimental design of an orthogonal array was employed to conduct the experiments. A variety of nine types of granitic rocks were used in the cutting experiments. The experimental data were used to assess the influence of AWJ operating variables on the cut depth. Using regression analysis, models for prediction of the cut depth from the operating variables and rock properties in AWJ machining of granitic rocks were then developed and verified. The results indicated that the cut depths decreased with increasing traverse speed and decreasing abrasive size. On the other hand, increase of the abrasive mass flow rate and water pressure led to increases in the cut depths. Additionally, it was observed that the standoff distance had no discernible effects on the cut depths. Furthermore, from the statistical analysis, it was found that the predictive models developed for the rock types had potential for practical applications. Verification of the models for using them as a practical guideline revealed a high applicability of the models within the experimental range used.  相似文献

Stoichiometric anorthite, CaAl2Si2O8, Pˉ1, with sharp a, b, c, and d diffractions was grown, using a CaV2O6 solvent, by cooling at 2 ° C per hour from 1450 to 750 ° C in air. Euhedral crystals up to 5 × 3× 0.5 mm, with prominent {010} and well-developed {110} and {001}, were obtained by spontaneous nucleation. Nonstoichiometric anorthite with excess SiO2 (CaAl2Si2O8+Si2Si2O8) was grown on the join CaAl2Si2O8-SiO2. Chemical analysis of the synthetic anorthite, having the highest SiO2 content, with maximum vacancies on M-site gave □0.110 Na0.006Ca0.884Al1.80Si2.20O8, and X-ray diffraction showed a trend from stoichiometric Pˉ1 through diffuse Pˉ1 to body-centered Iˉ1 probably reflecting increasing disorder caused by a higher Si/Al ratio in the T-sites and the positional disorder accompanied by M-site vancancies. Annealing of the nonstoichiometric diffuse Iˉ1 anorthite in air at 1050 ° C for 14 days resulted in exsolution of minute SiO2 inclusions due to probable ordering in the T-sites and filling of M-sites by Ca. Stoichiometric Pˉ1 anorthite was not obtained by annealing at 1050 ° due to appreciable solubility of SiO2 in CaAl2Si2O8. Metastable hexagonal CaAl2Si2O8 was found to be a twinned monoclinic crystal with cell dimensions: a = 10.24 (2), b = 17.74 (3), c= 14.99 (5) ?, β = 92.05 (5) °, space group C2.  相似文献

In many applications in flows through porous media, one needs to determine the properties of subsurface to detect, monitor, or predict the actions of natural or induced forces. Here, we focus on two important subsurface properties: rock permeability and porosity. A Bayesian approach using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is well suited for reconstructing the spatial distribution of permeability and porosity, and quantifying associated uncertainty in these properties. A crucial step in this approach is the computation of a likelihood function, which involves solving a possibly nonlinear system of partial differential equations. The computation time for the likelihood function limits the number of MCMC iterations that can be performed in a practical period of time. This affects the consistency of the posterior distribution of permeability and porosity obtained by MCMC exploration. To speed-up the posterior exploration, we can use a prefetching technique, which relies on the fact that multiple likelihoods of possible states into the future in an MCMC chain can be computed ahead of time. In this paper, we show that the prefetching technique implemented on multiple processors can make the Bayesian approach computationally tractable for subsurface characterization and prediction of porous media flows.  相似文献

By means of electron-optical methods the structure and orientation of lamella-like garnet exsolutions in an orthopyroxene from the eclogite of Gilsberg, Saxony Granulite Complex, are investigated. It can be shown that besides the macroscopic and microscopic submicroscopic exsolution lamellae also exist; they have widths up to nearly 5 nm. The intergrowth conditions are such shat (100)op is parallel to {100}gr and [001]op parallel to 〈110〉gr. The lamellae are coherent, but sometimes extended dislocation arrangements are found in microscopic lamellae which are caused by a deformation. These investigations point to formation of the rock as a result of a solid state reaction under high pressure conditions with subsequent diffusive-dissociative exsolution of garnet from primary pyroxene.  相似文献

The decomposition of fayalite (Fe2SiO4) in oxygen potential gradients is studied at T=1,418 K. The compound will be decomposed into its component oxides wüstite, Fe1?δO, and silica, SiO2, by the simultaneous action of two different oxygen partial pressures, exceeding a critical ratio, despite the fact that fayalite is stable at both the lower and the higher oxygen potential. A quantitative analysis of the decomposition process caused by defect fluxes within the bulk Fe2SiO4 is given.  相似文献
